Culture › Re: 60 Igbo Names & Their Meaning by bibe(m): 6:39am On May 19, 2018 |
MayhorE: Igbo names and their meanings have always been a question for the non- Igbos. Most Yoruba names are easily translated because of its structure. They are usually combinations of the most commonly spoken Yoruba words, most times prayers. Igbo names know no boundaries as there are Igbo names and meanings for baby boys , Igbo names for girls , Igbo names for twins, and funky Igbo names. Twins in Igbo culture are called ejima. Just as other cultures have numerous names for God, there are also many Igbo names for God. The Igbo tribe hails from the southeastern part of the beautiful nation, Nigeria. An ethnic group is known for being its brother’s keeper, the Igbos are known for their marketing skills, trade, business, and construction. The Igbo man and woman can make a business out of anything. Their ethnic name defines their culture and the personal name describes each individual’s unique being. A name is a means of identification. Names tell who you are, where you’re from, the family or clan and sometimes your purpose. Most Nigerian names are prayers. The average Nigerian believes in speaking things into existence, hence the prayers being names. Just like other cultures, most Igbos believe what you call a child can determine their future. The Igbo man loves to appraise God in the naming of a child. These names have undertones with strong meanings. laudate: Oga, you know nothing about the so-called policy you are peddling around. It is nothing, but sheer speculation and misguided propaganda, which started after the civil war. I have heard the same fake story before, and I conducted research on it! There is no circular, no memo, no written govt document anywhere, that corroborates this story. So try and free your mind and stop recycling hearsay, as if it were the gospel truth.
Someone explained the reason for the lack of patronage of those ports, in another post. The shallow waters and need for constand dredging, have made the operations of the ports, rather uneconomical and difficult to sustain, except for Onne port which has a deep draught. Take Calabar port for example. Do you know how many times a year, it needs to be dredged for ease of navigation and vessel usage? When commenting on public forum do try to pass your point without being condescending. I have no personal issues with you. I highlighted bathymetry as part of the problem with the Eastern ports in my initial response as well as others (ibaka is an exception but still in conception for now). As for the the speculation and propaganda regarding after war 'policy', it wasn't much of a policy so to speak as that was military regime (the do more of decrees). Granted there aren't much reports about it but it did happen. |

Infact Aba was actually built for the specific purpose of manufacturing. Now all the industries there are defunct due to Port neglect. The kinda loan required for these kinda project is enormous, you need massive federal commitment and assistance which isn't fort coming and may never happen hence the clamour for restructuring. As for replicating in new locations that's very possible but you gotta get the capacity up and running first to spur demand. I've already lost hope in the government as currently structured, it has its merits for sure but lacks in infrastructural performance and will continue to do so. |

MIKOLOWISKA: will the president examine all containers is it not human officers they will put there
barges cud work
state nko hmm we've got our work cut out for us. I think private sector needs to be given free hand Like I said earlier, it was more a case of paranoia than anything (for example think Gaza blockade) Barges could work but that'll increase processing time as well as cost not to mention the enormous handling risks. Also there's the issue of administrative bottlenecks that'll prop up in the case of barges. It works better with oil than other goods. Plus with the size of container ships these days, I don't think barges is that much a good idea. States couldn't really fund all that until recently (at least with 13% derivation and government policy allowing PPP. before PPP wouldn't have been possible due to high government policies. it used to be military rule remember) Like I mentioned earlier, service companies have now developed a web chain of service offerings over time that has now made Lagos Port a much more attractive option due to advantages accorded it for too long as more and more companies that do import these stuffs now have their offices in Lagos. Look at these things with perspective and you'll understand why and how it's going to be difficult to turn the tide now without deliberate government effort to get the Eastern ports 'working' again. |

laudate: Oga, post the url or the source of the so-called policy which you stated here, where you claimed that "This wouldn't have been much of an issue if not for the policy adopted following the war as the Eastern government could've easily carried out dredging..."
Who made this policy, and where is it documented? We need to check your sources and verify. Enough of the propaganda. The fact that Onne sea port was developed and is currently quite functional, rubbishes your claim about this so-called policy. Why don't you do a little research and see for yourself before peddling it as propaganda. As for the onne port I already explained what happened. Oil was already discovered in oloibiri before then as well as other discoveries in and around Rivers State (and other present SS states). As it was already becoming a mainstay of our economy, onne was then harnessed and improved to sort out oil and gas strictly until recently. I made a submission, you should politely counter them no need to resort to sly remarks. |

laudate: Oga, did you read my post with an open mind, before jumping on your keyboard to type this epistle? Is Onne sea port not closer to the Southeast region, than Lagos? Is Onne port NOT operational? Are goods and raw materials not being consigned to onne port, and cleared by importers from there on a daily basis?
So why are your importers obsessed with using Lagos ports? Produce or cite one policy that federal govt has used to strangulate operations in eastern ports. Please paste the source right here in black & white, so we can all read and verify. How come that same policy has not strangulated Onne port? If freight charges are disproportional between Lagos port and Onne ports, what are your members in the Senate and house of reps doing, to review this issue? Following the civil war, in order to check against arms infiltration (the government still feared the Eastern region may re-arm #paranoia) all imports of goods to the Eastern ports was stopped. Then government then had to improve capacity of Lagos apapa Port to handle the increased traffic and that's the Genesis of the whole current problem. This also made it easier for them to monitor what was coming in and going out (Lagos was still the seat of power then thus it was much easier) Onne was then repurposed to serve mostly oil and gas export/import (oil boom). And this policy remained so until about few years ago. Naturally, Lagos has a deep bathymetry compared to Eastern ports (which has shallow bathymetry and a problem for big ships). This wouldn't have been much of an issue if not for the policy adopted following the war as the Eastern government could've easily carried out dredging projects to solve such issues as well as also increasing capacity to handle big ships (ships keep getting bigger and bigger and you need to develop Port capacity to handle them). These long years of neglect/policy is what brought about the situation we have today in the Eastern ports. Plus a lot of service companies have created service chains on the back of Apapa dominance which makes Lagos port much more functional and attractive to shipping companies. It's going to take years and deliberate efforts on the part of the federal government to turn the tide. #my humble take on the Eastern port issues following researches I made a long time ago. |

Don't know about the hypo in lacasera but as for the urine, they don't consume it, they inhale it. allowing it for 10 days makes it ferment and give off chlorine gas (not sure again if the exact gas) I think and when inhaled in considerable quantities can give psychotic effects. |

Anambra and Imo states are within the Niger Delta region (geographical Niger Delta not the political Niger Delta) and as such there's so many of the river Niger tributaries scattered all over and building Bridges for all of them especially within local places like this costs a lot of money. They have very heavy presence in Rivers, Bayelsa and Delta i.e. three states unlike the Igboids whose heavy presence are just in Delta and Rivers i.e. two states. Please recall that Even in Delta State the Ikas particularly don't accept they are Igbos. The issue of the Ika is a discussion for another day. I'm not here to debate who is or who isn't the largest tribe in SS by population, my assertion is that the Igbo remains among the majority ethnicity in the SS. |

They are among the majority but they are not the majority. The population of ijaws even in Bayelsa (which is primarily ijaw) is just about the same as the Aniomas, not to mention the other igbo and Igboid groups in the rest of SS. In Rivers they aren't a majority (The ndoki and Ikwerre are). They aren't as well represented in Akwa Cross as the Igbo/igboid groups either. Lastly you keep misinterpreting me, I said the Igbo are among the majority in the SS, I never said they are the majority. |
Politics › Re: "Biafra Is A Fraud – It Was In The Mortuary, Now Gone To The Cemetery" -Nwabueze by bibe(m): 10:21am On Apr 16, 2018 |
Deadlytruth: So are you now suggesting that Aniomas of Delta are more than the Urhobos who are the undisputed majority in Delta State? Even Aniomas accuse Urhobos of Domineering over Delta State with their numerical strength. And considering Aniomas alone against a combination of Urhobos, Ijaws, Itshekiris and Isokos it is difficult to understand how you arrived at an Anioma majority in Delta State. The only Igboid group in Edo State are the Igbankes who are not even up to 15 of the Orhiomwon LGA in which they are found. Again one is at loss as to how they constitute majority over Binis, Esans, Etsakos, Akoko-Edos, Owans, Urhobos, Ijaws and Itshekiris all of Edo State put together. Of the 31 LGAs in Akwa Ibom the Igboid groups are found in less than 6. How then do they constitute majority in the state? Of the 8 LGAs in Bayelsa the Igboid groups occur in probably 1 or 2. How does this translate to majority status there? In Cross River they are a minority in just one LGA. How does that confer majority status on them? It is only in Rivers they seem to have a majority status which is under dispute. However the disputed majority in Rivers peters into insignificance when the other five SS states are considered along. Your analysis is in isolation to respective states, my assertion is in whole of SS. For example Bayelsa state comprising of mostly Ijaws is about the same as the population of Anioma people in Delta. Urhobos as you mentioned are the majority in Delta, what's their presence/population in the other SS states likewise the Itshekiris and Isoko? My point is considering the population of the various ethnicities in the SS Igbos are still among the majority (if you consider SS as a block). In that sense for example, the Itshekiris becomes minority albeit probably being a majority in Delta State. |

Deadlytruth: The topic based on which your brother here created an imaginary rejection of Edo is one which has to do with an Igbo King's opinion on the boundaries of Biafra and not Igbo land boundaries alone hence my taking him up that way. As per the bolded: the Igboid groups in the SS are found as fractional inhabitants of just about 5 of the 18 senatorial districts in the SS. So how could they be the majority over the remaining 13 when population is a factor considered in creating senatorial districts?
Here is a link on the rejection of Biafra by all SS tribes. https://www.vanguardngr.com/2017/06/biafra-south-south-group-disowns-secession-plans-expresses-confidence-one-nigeria/
For the fact that majority of Igbos want Biafra and have been boasting that a referendum will so reveal, it obviously means that Igbo has become synonymous with Biafra hence the rejection of Biafra by the SS tribes amounts to the rejection of Igbos. Population is a factor considered in creating senatorial districts but that isn't the sole factor. What's the population of the Aniomas in Delta State compared to the other ethnicities? How about the population of igbo/Igboid groups in Rivers who are infact the majority in Rivers State? Coming to cross river and akwa ibom you still get them albeit in the minority even in Edo. LG and states are somewhat to an extent created to capture ethnicities but that's not the sole factor as you've tried to paint it. Eg Kogi, Jos, Taraba, Delta etc These are states that don't have a distinct whole component ethnicity (as sole occupant) So when i say igbos constitute among the majority ethnicity in the SS I'm speaking with facts. |

Deadlytruth: Please who in the SS is denying Edo? I guess this your Mbaise King is synonymous with SE and SW which are denying Edo according to you? Meanwhile your Biafra brothers have started readjusting the Biafra map to include the oil bearing LGAs of Edo State. And why is it that all that Biafrans believe in is attachment so much that the they feel it is abnormal for any people to be entirely on their own? Before you ask why Edo is being 'rejected' by everyone you will be more reasonable to first explain why Edo was the first place Ojukwu the founder of Biafra invaded and tried to annex to Biafra despite knowing it supposedly belonged to the SW as you would have us believe. You will also do well to explain why Azikiwe the overall leader of Igbos fought tooth and nail to get Edo excised from the Old Western Region together with Delta despite knowing fully well that Edo belonged to the SW as you suppose. You are obviously suggesting that both Zik and Ojukwu were ignoramuses of the highest order, right?
The truth remains that Igbos are jealous and at the same time fearful of Edos because they obviously will be the most difficult people to dominate over by them in a joint SS/SE Biafra.
However, your claim of rejection for Edo is actually an inverted one because it is even the Igbos that have been roundly rejected by all the SS tribes in several declarations through which they all distanced and dissociated themselves from Biafra. From the Itshekiris to the Urhobos to some Aniomas (Gov. Okowa himself inclusive) to Isokos to Ibibios, to Ikweres (Gov. Wike inclusive) to Ogojas to Efiks to Ijaws etc, the Biafra rejection story is the same. I will soon post you a lo link to that effect. Gov Okowa rejecting Biafra does not equate to him rejecting Igbo likewise others in Rivers. The contentious issue is Biafra which some Igbos even in the SE reject. Your assertion of all SS tribes roundly rejecting Igbo is "alternate facts" as Igbos still constitute among the majority tribe in the SS (by population). |

motherfucker: Good Morning Lovely Family,
I come in peace and I wish to indulge your collective contribution to my search. There seems to be air of misconception filled with untrue ideologies on igbo custom of marriage and bride price--at least from the majority of non-igbos who wish to marry an igbo lady.
I do understand that igbos are of diverse customs, tribe and tradition, which stipulate different rules, requirements when it comes to issues of marrying a lady from such regions.
Several months ago, a particular thread hit front page which was created by blogger flirtykaren; I mean lailasblog.com. In that thread, an image of list of items that should be presented by the groom was captured. The reaction of readers to the said list or thread announced displeasure. Some could be heard saying that Igbos sell their daughters; others asked are they gold? Others said they will never marry an Igbo lady. It went on and on.
source: https://www.nairaland.com/3054077/2016-bride-price-umuahia-abia
The sad part about the above mentioned event in that thread is that over 100 blogs have copied same content, same image and thereby circulating what might not be true. I can tell you that that report might be doing more harm than good, beyond what we might imagine. How did I know, I did a google search for the keyword phrase :"Abia State Bride Price". What I saw was a circulation of flirtykaren's post. Some other guys might do a google search and will be greeted by same reportage, which could be detrimental to potential bride of igbo extract.
A certain section of the thread claimed that in their own custom, it is relatively cheap/ affordable to marry a from his/her own tribe. Another said that the list is lie and nothing like that exist in their place. This captured my reason for creating this thread. I would want us to give potential non igbo groom the right information. This could mean that flirtykaren, just like many bloggers in Nigeria, didn't do thorough research and investigation before reporting such thread.
Numerous threads have also been created on same topic which still caused uproar by non igbos while some still claim it is not expensive to marry from their region. Is that the case? Wouldn't be nice if you (those who claim it is not expensive) to educate us on how it is done with broken down procedures?
Are you from Imo State, Anambra State, Ebonyi State, Abia State, Enugu State? What part of these states are you from? Can you be kind and humble enough to educate us how traditional marriage is carried out in your tribe among this states? I want specifics according to how it is done village by village, clan by clan and not one that represent the entire Igbo tribe.
I decided to put this here because we have more married folks around here, as against the Culture section and since Nairaland is quickly indexed, this could serve as panacea or palliative in the future among blogs.
Please this is very important. Thank you for your time. Kindly modify and include Delta (Anioma) and Rivers. |

uchennamani: No. The one you were talking was bombed during the Nigerian civil war. The present bridge was built by General Gowon after the civil war. The whole bridge wasn't destroyed, it was only the onitsha end that was destroyed, more than 75% of the bridge was still intact after the onitsha end demolition. It was simply to halt the advancement of the Nigerian troops from the Midwest. After that, the incursion mainly came through Benue/Enugu. What Gowon did was to rehabilitate and reconstruct what was left of it. |

moscobabs: Some tribes are ingrates
Sir Abubarka Tafawa Balewa built the bridge
Sir Abubarka Tafawa Balewa commissioned it
Sir Abubarka Tafawa Balewa was assassinated by them
They bomb/destroyed the bridge during civil war in 1967.
The Enemy of them are them Sir Tafawa Belewa didn't build the bridge. If you were familiar with the workings of the regional governmental system practiced then you'll know that it was financed by the Eastern regional government as well as the Western and a Mid-Western regional governments. He did commission it being the then prime minister. |

"Nigeria, he said, entered recession because of the fall in oil prices from an average of about $110 per barrel to $28 per barrel; normalisation of monetary policy by the United States Federal Reserve System, which led to the stoppage of an injection of about $85 billion per month into the global economy; and geopolitical tensions among critical trading routes and partners around the world"
So it wasn't the looting nor PDPs 16 years of misrule? Interesting. |
