It's about citations from impact journals which these universities have published, UNN had over 26,000 citations.

WEBOMETRICS has released its much awaited
December 2017 Transparent ranking of universities.
UNN is ranked number 1 in West Africa and 18th
in Africa.
In the top 20 in Africa were 9 universities from
South Africa, 7 from Egypt, 2 from Kenya, 1 from Nigeria (UNN) and 1 from Sudan. Number 1 in Africa remains the University of Cape Town.
This ranking is based on citations on publications
provided by Google Scholar Citations. It is the openness criterion in the comprehensive WEBOMETRICS ranking.
Congratulations All! It was a collective effort.
This is really cheery news and kudos must go to the VC and his administration for promoting academic excellence in UNN. And to the staff for their productivity.
However, we need to work harder, because, although we remain the King of West African universities, we were pushed down from our previous 16th position to the current 18th position in Africa.
We need to increase the tempo of our publications in visible journals and in other platforms that can be accessed internationally and cited in other publications.
