and it is also proven by history that the decline of any empire is indicated by its debt crisis, prior to the wind up of the british empire they could hardly finance their overseas expeditions , same goes for the ottoman empire. and most recent empires (see noriel rhoubini the guy who predicted the financial crisis, he is not a fortune teller o, just a financial economist at one US leading business schools cant remember the name)

i dont say the US are displaying what they have in public and neither are the chinese, their independence day display is just common to communist ex communist countries, the Kremlin stil does thesame every yr

and I beg to disagree on your comparison of any european country military and that of the chinese. the chinese military spending (the real one not the one they post for the world to see) is enough to bail out the italian economy.
these european contries just live on their world war 2 era glory, their defense budgets and military spending has shrank ever then, they are more comfortable with outsourcing their security to NATO or US to be specific. u can see this in the recent missile deffense crisis between US europe and russia.

bottom line i am not saying the US dont have the best military in the world, all am saying is even uncle sam has to think twice before it attacks the chinese.

and if the current trajectory of maintained with washington playing self appointed police while china continueS to grow ON all frontS, i wont be supprised if the headlines in 15 yrs read ; ' FORMER SUPER POWER UNITED STATES HAS, ,,'
Foreign AffairsRe: Will Usa Go To War With China To End Its Economic Decline? by BIGERBOY1: 3:53pm On Aug 09, 2011
ok here is the deal.

china is a communnist state while US is democratic

the implication of this is no one knows the chinese real advancement in weponry  while u can get the US defense department budget by just googling it.

Remember in 2008  or was ir 2007 when the chinese took out a satelite from orbit using advanced guided missiles, only few countries have this capabilities, no one knew they had such capabilities until they did that, few weeks later the US claimed it too had to shoot out a satelite from orbit!

on china and Japan in military might they are incomparable (1) only a 3 or 4 countries have a million strong army - china inclussive (2) Japans nuclear program is purely civilian while china has both civilian and military aplication

interms of hardwares, did any one watch the 60th anniversary of the communist party? ondisplay were chinese made unmanned drones, intercontinental nuclear missiles, sophisticated surface to surface and defence shield missiles, ,,,,

yes US has the best military in the world, but there are somethings even the world no 1 wont dare do

When I first heard of the issue of Islamic banking, I thought the words were misplaced. So I said Sanusi was merely referring to interest-free banking. In my reckoning, it was as much an Islamic thing as it was a Christian thing. The hoopla was therefore unnecessary.

But I had to look deeper. The fray intensified as nerves frayed across pious lines. The CBN boss, the boisterous and diminutive Sanusi, would not miss out on the theatre. If Sanusi does not meet with theatre, he would have to invent it. He loves the fight. He dares his opponents. Coming from a pedigree both colourful and austere, he wants to make a show in pursuit of old-fashioned ideas.

So, ancient and modern meet in the small man who has a lot of plunk and thunder. We should not forget that this man’s first love is not to be a CBN boss, however he seems to relish it. He wants to be the emir of Kano. That can come from a sense of revenge. His family lost out in the royal battle decades ago, and he feels a historic challenge to retrieve it. He would rather be a family hero than a national icon. Rather he has become celebrity as irritant.

So it is not surprising that he talks as though from a throne. He deploys poise, articulation, defiance, authority, a certain royal energy quite out of place with the aplomb persona of a central bank top shot. But Nigeria is a country where this sort can blossom. When Alan Greenspan shook the system in his day, it was on the quiet side. A Sanusi in America would mean a sort of professional suicide. It is only a man of Sanusi’s background though that can fell hefty bankers, play hero absent-mindedly and contradict himself and get away with it. He wants to cleanse the banks and later confesses cleansing the banks would not cleanse the economy. He is a contradiction of hubris in humility and humility in hubris. He abides the opposites. He wants to be at once regal and messianic, a revolutionary at war with himself.

So it is with Islamic banking. He explains the issue of Islamic banking as though it is only an economic issue. He does not mind riling the Christians. He does not care to reach out to them. He just wants to do his job.

Then you saw unrestrained goons like Datti Ahmed calling for war and another mullah with the Bible in Oritsejafor boasting as though we are in the years of The Crusades when Christians battled Muslims. In the rough-and-tumble of the debate, it is obvious no side is reasoning, and to use the cliché, we have a storm in a tea cup.

If you read the Bible well, you would realise that Christianity has nothing against the principle of Islamic banking. Usury in the Bible is sin. It is also sin in the Koran. So, it seems to me that the Oritsejafors of this world are opposing Islamic banking because they call it Islamic banking and because the bank would have a board of Sharia clerics to ensure the bank is faithful to its ideals. By opposing Islamic banking, they are supporting interests, the sin of capitalism. It is the supreme irony of clerics trying to go to war in defence of the worldly system. Friendship with the world, warns Paul in the Bible, is enmity with God.

Christendom did not go the way of the so-called modern banking until the collapse of the Holy Roman Empire, which at the end was neither holy nor Roman, according to historians. What emerged at the fall of Catholicism was what Max Weber designated as the spirit of capitalism. But that spirit came not from infidels but from Christians. A group of Christians called Calvinists redefined the attitude of the faithful and consequently the world and history. As Weber, a sociologist, explained it, the Calvinists wanted to turn the kind of devotion they had for God to the world. They defined this in terms of work.

It was this group that laid the foundation for the modern view of work and profit, the contempt for indolence, the calculation of time as money, the proliferation of the professions, the scientific view of things with the masters of the Renaissance. A critical turn of mind overtook us, and the god of mammon started to compete feverishly with that of God. They could have heard what Jesus said: make unto yourselves friends of the mammon of unrighteousness… Some scholars said Jesus encouraged dishonesty. We know the parable of the unjust servant, and the fact that he was unjust told the story. Jesus did not call for interest. Nowhere in the scriptures does so.

Banking was a story of Christians who dumped strict Christian principles in favour of profit. Americans are at bottom Calvinists. They are puritans in faith and puritans in business. They pursue faith and profit with equal enthusiasm. That was why Max Weber said the spirit abandoned what was called enchantment, a world peopled by only spirits. They became disenchanted and followed not only the spirit of God but also the spirit of capitalism.

What is called Islamic finance only calls for a strict adherence to a different sort of capitalism. It is wrong to deny Islamic finance the description of capitalism. The Muslim world wants capitalism in its own way. It calls for what it calls profit sharing. Rather than give a loan to a man to buy cars and charge for interest, it would buy the car at above the market value and sell it to the customer. The buyer will decide whether the profit is what he or she can live with. There will be a Sharia council to watch operations, but there is nothing wrong with that. If Christians are so worried about that, then they should not patronise the banks. The bank is not being imposed on everybody. If you decide not to use the bank, then go to other banks.

It is one of the fastest growing institutions in the world of commerce, and it is flourishing in Europe and the United States. It is better than what we have today when banks are lazy and charge astronomical interests for loans that help nobody but themselves. About 250 mutual funds and major banks have some form of Islamic banking to those who want it. Islamic banking is collaborative banking, and the customer takes part in negotiating terms and shares profits with the bank.

What the world witnessed in the past few years with shylock CEOs has drawn quite a few people to the Islamic alternative. Even the Vatican has argued that “the principle of Islamic finance may represent a possible cure for ailing markets.” This is the Catholic Church.

I wonder if many who oppose this brand of banking understand what it means. As I noted earlier, it has to do with the context of Sanusi’s rhetoric. It ought to be explained not only as an economic venture by a competing deity, but a practical way to do business. Capitalism grew out of the word laissez faire, which implies that others are free to make profit. Let a thousand traders bloom.

This is not the time to ratchet up rhetoric over religion, especially in these days of rampaging Boko Haram partisans. Rather than destroy Islamic banking, let us see how we can make it work.

see the kind yeye bear palour responses here.huh?

nija i hail thee, u r lucky to have a pro active cbn to nationalize banks b4 they coz shock waves in the economy by failing and u r hear shouting sanusi.

if he let these banks collapsed and jobs are entirely lost then u will have a shock therapy lesson in banking and finance.

worst case scenerio is that these banks might right size a few jobs, better than shedding their entire staffs if they were left to liquidate  without the nationalization.

who remembers Bank of America and Citi? these banks were partly nationalized at the hight of the financial crisis, but by playing their cards right they paid back US taxpayers. unlike our yeye banks i doubt if they these natinalized banks can pay themselves out.

trust 9ja cbn saves banks its SLS agenda   , ,,, cbn lets bank fail na SLS agenda? waitrn person go do fo 9ja to get credit?

ramadan is fine thanx 4 asking,

I was refering to null arguments like
1. why is sanusi focusing on islamic bank (coz its most popular)

2. let sanusi focus on nib as a whole and not just islamic banking( then provide a variant proposal eg xtian banking)

3. we r not against islamic banking just d name (well dats wat its called everywhere)

I could go on and on, so am not trying to stifle constructive critism, just pointing out the hypocracy in some of these arguments.
PoliticsRe: Islamic Banking: Oritsejafor Replies Sultan! by BIGERBOY1: 1:40pm On Aug 01, 2011
this chameleon like argument is gettin annoying. u refute this and they change into another one instead of thoroughly dealing with issues.

ok here is the catch. show me any where in the world where xtian banking or other form of non interest banking is practiced and I will give u ten where islamic banking is practiced.

that is why sanusi is focusing on islamic banking.

haba. just name 3 xtian banking and I will name 30 islamic banks globally for u.

from the arguments of beaf i only see embodiment of supreme ignorance and lack of appreciation of situations.

typical of goodluck supporters when conered with facts they spew insults. too bad. pasting pictures of downtrodden children and making cheap political points gets us no where. poverty is not a problem common to the north or even nigeria, if any thing it is as a result of serial failure of leadership. gej inclusive. of i may ask is it a crime to demand good governance from gej? from his direction and priorities he is heading the wrong way, we r tired of stories of this is just the first 100 days, as some one asked who was there the last 300 days?
PoliticsRe: Islamic Banking: Oritsejafor Replies Sultan! by BIGERBOY1: 11:40am On Jul 31, 2011
Yusufi:
As far as I am concerned, the CAN President is extremely ignorant and is a precise definition of an extremely intolerant being. Where on earth do people make laws or identify with things that are in direct variance with their cultural identity? If the american population was 50 percent Muslim and are politically represented in governance, would there be any problem in adopting certain policies that are Islamic in nature? If there exists both Christians and Muslims in equal proportion in a country, it is only logical to incorporate the values of each in a balanced proportion. What is wrong with writing Fifty Naira in Arabic considering the fact that a hand-full of those up north who are not exposed to western education would find it much easier to identify coz writing same in Hausa using the conventional abcd is as good as writing fifty Naira to such persons.

Still on the arabic writings on the naira notes, it does not even make sense to an Arab because its just like me writing "Yaya aiki" to an english or non hausa-speaking person using the english alphabets. As for the lingua franca thing, english is not the predominant language among the uneducated natives up north. Moreover, even the colonial masters met the arabic or popularly called ajimi alphabetical system in place. Therefore, it predates the advent of our colonial masters. Up till date, people make written communication in hausa using the ajimi alphabets which would make no sense to the arabs. The question is: Is there anything wrong in passing a message to a large group of people in a manner with which they are accustomed to without infringing upon the rights of others? Kindly endeavour to research facts before making comments. Whether anyone likes it or not, the northers way of life is deeply rooted in their religious principles and would definitely remain so. You should not expect a group of persons to conceal or deny their identity just so that others feel secure.

On Islamic banking, I suggests he takes a hike coz he and the institution he represents would rather gain than lose anything. Could it be that the leadership of the conventional banks are channeling their grievances via a common platform as a strategy to make the general public stand against its introduction coz they would probably lose out?, just thinking
that was a very thought full right up. how I wish nigerians will forget bias for now and think thougtfully.

on issue of the the ajamiwriting I believe we just threw away a national treasure, just because japanese, chinese and korean writings look the same doesnt make them thesame. the english, french and german seemngly look thesame in writing but u will agree they r not the same.

likewise in ajami hausa it looks like arabic but not arabic, infact there r letters perculiar to only hausa which r not in arabic. we should be proud that our fellow nigerians had b4 europeans developedmeans of writing and communixation. my grand father is over hundred he lives in the village and has no formal education yet he has a LIBRARY made up of manuscripts and scrolls written in these ajami letters both by himself and his father, u can imagine how old those scripts are, those are the kind of treasures we r throwing away. if it were the wite man he would be fighting for UNESCO recognition, but in africa we kill our history by ourselves. too bad

the guy didnt exonerat BH, but since u guys prefer to hear it that way goodluck, to u. he said some of this bombings were not BH, which is true some criminals, politicians etc settle scores with each other and call it BH, a bank was robbed at bauchi the other day and the lazy ass police were content with the boko haram story insteadnof doing investigations.

and also some brain lazy nigerians are content with BH blanket blame on every problem. in niger state for instance i head some bombings there were the work of some disgrunted groups in the state, they call themselves some name, but as i said in a lazy ass country were convinience is put over competence both security agencies and the masses can keep on wallowing in their dellusional conclusions, i just they watch.

bottom line BH is guilty but not all crimes r BH do some investigation, thatsbexactly what sultan said.

if CAN had kept quite and let experts analyze and debate the islamic banking concept, the sultan would have na reason to wade in.

I admire his sense of priorities unlike CAN, first he debunked the sharia council's violence stance then put foward his position. compare this with 'no one has monopoly over violence', common CAN should learn to speak with sence of leadership.

u here UN says they need 2bn dollars and only have 1bn yet nothing to show for it.

I believe these so called aid agencies just cashing in on disasters to make money, because u only see media propaganda but nothing, absolutely nothing on ground, but mickey mouse structures called make shift hospitals. now my points and question are:

1. why is there no accountability in the huge sums pledged for aids?

2. when will Africans start getting their acts together and start doing something about these kind of disasters instead of waiting on the int'l community. There is no means of individual donations as Nigerians!

3 seriosly people are suffering and we just keep waiting on UNHCNR to issue statements,
