blackweaver:AFAIK Linux mint uses upstart too. Linux based on ubuntu (although there are plans to base it off debian but i dont see that happening anytime soon) and every release of Mint is based on a version of ubuntu e.g Elyssa LTS is based on Ubuntu Hardy Heron LTS while Mint Felicia (whats with the p0rn star names) is based on Intrepid Ibex. most of Mints modifications of ubuntu are mere GUI, artwork, and applications that comes pre-installed (like thunderbird in place of evolution) anyway i love linux mint and prefer always recommend it to newbies ahead of ubuntu because of the ease of use and the mint menu which is similar to what you have on windows vista (which is actually a close to the suse slab) about upstart i still prefer the BSD-style' init framework which is better organised since you have one /etc/rc.conf to point to scripts within a single directory (etc/rc.d/) for all system services, regardless of runlevel. its makes it very easy to monitor what starts and doesnt in your pc this is why ArchLInux Rock |
@dakmanzero dude where have u been all this while, good to see that u still patrol this part, take care mate |
why not take your wares to the technology market section or even nairalist? this section is for giving support. |
after all is done , this is how ubuntu jaunty netbook remix looks like on my compaq mini 700 https://farm4.static.flickr.com/3643/3472998047_2fa0393eb9_o_d.png Ubuntu Netbook Remix is an official distribution of Ubuntu for netbooks, optimized for use with the Intel Atom processor. It is based on the standard (full version e.g. Ubuntu 9.04) Ubuntu Desktop distribution, but adds a window picker and an application launcher optimized for netbooks like the eeepc, the acer aspire or hp mini can be downloaded from here http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download-netbook Its completely free of charge , i am currently working on a guide on how to install and configure the ubuntu netbook edition on your netbook. |
flyuche:u might want to hold on a bit , although ubuntu 9.04 has been released and its quite stable. just like every OS the initial release could be quite buggy but in like a month into the release some of this rough edges would be fixed with updates. so whatever version of ubuntu works for u. stick to it and wait for the jaunty dust to settle. |
esquire:@esquire you are very right, i have forgotten that using modem has on ubuntu is now dead easy thanks to network manager 7, my bad, i still live in the good ol days when u have to use wvdial (which i still use sha) @smart$boy follow esquire guide, very very easy that way, even glo and mnt are supported. About using your phone as a modem via bluetooth that is very possible but you would have to install blueman, here is a guide u can follow http://traversingmind..com/2009/02/bluetooth-dun-with-linux.html |
bluetooth is mostly plug and play on ubuntu , never had a problem with it , |
What is scary and annoying about this is that i never enabled notification by email in my profile, i have been in this forum since 2006 never had a problem like this, someone or probably the admin decided to enable it for me or probably everyone, which if that is the case is like an invasion of my privacy , really not finding this funny at all. if its a bug in simplemachine then i would understand, it would be nice if we get official confirmation from nairaland admin this issue . |
Smart$boy:I have not used the phone for connection before but I have seen people use that phone on linux and it works fine first u need to use the commandline which is not that scary just copy and paste what i post in terminal which u will find at Application/Accessories/Terminal then plugin your phone using the phone to pc cable and run the following command sudo wvdialconf what this command does is to configure your phone for dialup. the configuration files would be stored at /etc/wvdial.conf now u need to go to the configuration file and edit it to your preference gksu gedit /etc/wvdial.conf which would open a notepad like application which an already configured settings that looks like this [Dialer Defaults] you will now have to set the username and password field according to to your network preference one that is done, save the file and close it now go to terminal again and run sudo wvdial if it works you should be online when u start firefox, which might start in offline mode just go to file/ and uncheck workoffline and try again , if u have problems post it here , for further readings http://ubuntunigeria./category/connectivity/ |
brianromel:why i said this is because for you to learn u have to start small, first know how to do the little thing before you jump to big stuff, its like learning to walk before you run, I dont know how good your understanding of linux is, but if you have very little, it would be best for you to try to first improve you understanding of how linux work by using a newbie friendly distro like ubuntu, than graduating onto greater things. but if u have an understanding of linux and how the linux community works, how about searching for the community and online documentation on auditor or try joining their mailing list or irc, u would get better help from there just my $0.2 |
when u want help you have to supply more info so we tailor our help to fix your needs like what type of dailup are we talking about , mobile phone? what type of hardware are u using , nokia? what carrier? mtn? then what have your tried and what was the result.? most people here are quite good but are not magicians that would know the exact problems u have. u have got to give details |
brianromel:auditor is an ethical* hacker tool, its not something for the newbie, if you cant figure out how to install it , then its not meant for you. bitter truth |
baani:be ready to learn and have fun at the same times, can be frsutration at times because its a new way of doing things, so my advise , get a linux distro and install it u can here is a head start www.ubuntunigeria. or u can join this mailing list http://groups.google.com/group/ubuntunigeria |
Azanor:there is no way to copy or download the application from ubuntu ultimate cd to a fresh ubuntu 8.10. the applications in the ubuntu ultimate dvd are built with the dvd, u the applications have already then installed as part of the dvd, also u cant upgrade to ubuntu ultimate , one ubuntu ultimate is not an offcial version of ubuntu, its more like a fan remix so its not officially supported by ubuntu , about the dvds which this place for info on that www.ubuntunigeria. |
u welcome mate |
Djcn:have u used or seen windows run on a netbook? and i have seen linux run on a netbook? i have seen and used both on at least the eeepc, ascer aspire1 and the compaq mini so am speaking from experience not from the point of view of an MS employee's blog. true many people would naturely go for what they are used to which in this case is XP. that doesnt make XP run better on netbooks, popularity and performance are quite 2 different things. if u want to talk about windows on netbooks bring up its merits over linux netbooks rather than rely on statistics which has no bases. |
u can resize images with either gthumb, or gimp, or install nautilus-image-converter which would allow u to right-click on an image and resize it, |
flyuche:great u must be a webdeveloper , because i cant think of any reason why a normal hunman bring would want to use internet explorer anyway except to test how their website would look like on it, , anyway am glad that it works for you. cheers |
azman:I would just advise u to leave the linux as it is, dont let the word linux scare you the one that comes preloaded on your machine has been made to be very easy to you so you wont have any problem, xp doesnt run well on netbooks, by the time you have your anti-virus it would just become very very slow to make any sense, also to be able to install XP u would have to get an external cd-rom, plus start looking for drivers that would work, after which u would end up with a system that is very slow to bootup, applications would be slow to start etc, when i got my compaq mini 700 netbook it came preloaded with xp, the performance was soo bad that i had to install linux, which has been slimmed down to run on netbooks i never when back. again linux is not that hard to use, incase you have any problem or question about it please let me know i would be glad to help . cheers. |
rpm fans will kill you for that statement tho i admit that i prefer deb based distros to rpmswell fact speaks for them selfs, compare the number of debian based distros to rpm distros? rpm, yum, yest, zyper, all suck compared to apt-get, although lots of work as being put into yum to make it not suck soo much like the presto plugin, its still no were comparable to apt-get, the only package manager gives apt-get a run for its money is pacman for archlinux , first time you try to play an mp3 file ubuntu will offer to download some files (codecs) that you need to be able to play mp3s as long as you have a working internet connection you shouldn't have a problemabi? no mind them , u have to read before u leap. am trying to work on codec package which allow people to install multimedia codecs offline on ubuntu. i guess the problem should be a network setup one; as far as i know linux has support for most network cards and most pc vendors don't change network chipsets the way they change sound and videoexactly , never seen a network card that doesn't just work on linux. most i have tried just work without a problem. the problem lies with wireless which is not really linux fault. when the vendor wont write correct drivers. the community has to result to reverse engineering, and the user suffers, so vote with ur pocket and get only computers with open hardware like intel or vendors with good support for linux like nvidia |
flyuche:first remove kdm and gdm then reinstall gdm just copy and paste the following and u should be fine , if u dont break u dont learn sudo apt-get remove --purge kdm ; sudo apt-get remove gdm ; sudo apt-get install gdm |
blackweaver:sure @nonoy post the out of dmesg |
centaur-prime:This is what happens when u dont look before you leap. U want to master linux! you want to master linux! yet you are not able to do simple research and find out what makes linux unique. Linux is not windows, its not just about putting a cd in your computer and going to sleep. its a culture and a community, and when u ignore that fact the result is what u get. First of about the DVD and MP3, FYI Ubuntu ships with only free and open source software (google if you dont know what that is) as a result it dont not ship with non free multimedia codec and format like mp3 and dvd codecs that is why this things dont work out of the box, however, it does allow you to download the codecs and install them by your self if you wish, you might want to read a guide i wrote on how to enable multimedia on ubuntu http://bigbrovar./2008/12/17/multimedia-codecs-and-tools-for-ubuntu/ About the Network not being detected, My guess would be that what ever Network card/wireless card you are using is proprietary if that is the case u might have to download the driver from it using the Hardware Driver in System-Administrator-Hardware Driver if that doesnt work u would have to put the output of lspci | grep Networkhere so we can see what type of driver you are running and direct you accordingly. About the command not working , seriously i really dont understand that part, what command did you run? even though ubuntu is based on debian, and probably has some unique way of doing things, its still Linux and still comes with the co-utils and bash, hence most Linux command work on ubuntu just fine. am not sure if u are complaining or seeking for help. but which ever way u should have tested all this problem in the live CD stage, and probably read if ubuntu is compatible with your hardware before taking the jump. dont forget that your laptop was built for windows, and the fact that many things even worked showed just how good linux is, if u want 100 compatibility then get a laptop with linux pre-installed. |
decided to resurrect this thread from the dead So this month i decide to give my laptop an apple flavor, there are some element of their interface, like the One Click side mouse, and the lack of right click, i decided to add some element i love about macs with the best of gnome here is what i came up with https://farm4.static.flickr.com/3640/3431268829_483a92a127_d.jpg https://farm4.static.flickr.com/3662/3431268825_5196be2503_d.jpg https://farm4.static.flickr.com/3327/3431268821_4518a4e8ed_d.jpg |
flyuche:Well one word Debian is the mother of 70% of Linux Distros my opinion of it is summed up by the following from distrowatch The success of Debian GNU/Linux can be illustrated by the following numbers. It is developed by over 1,000 volunteer developers, its software repositories contain more than 20,000 packages (compiled for 11 processor architectures), and it is responsible for inspiring over 120 Debian-based distributions and live CDs. These figures are unmatched by any other Linux-based operating system. The actual development of Debian takes place in three main branches (or four if one includes the bleeding-edge "experimental" branch) of increasing levels of stability: "unstable" (also known as "sid"Debian is solid as a rock, it is the mother of the ubuntu, Mint,Mepis,Xandros of this world. its very solid stable and doesnt compromise of FOSS standard. although i would say that its might not be ideal for the new user, and its stable release are always quite dated due to the focus on stablity then shipping the latest and greatest software. |
Azanor:well i am not sure i quite get you, are u trying , are u trying to install the softwares u installed on ur ubuntu ultimate machine on the ubuntu 8.10 machine? or are u wondering if its possible to install softwares that came with ubuntu ultimate on ubuntu 8.10? in case of the first scenario. the answer is a yes and no, yes if the ubuntu ultimate u intend to install is based on ubuntu 8.10 , so how can u do this, u can either use a tool called aptoncd (google it) or manually copy the software in the ubuntu ultimate from /var/apt/cache/archive/ to the same directory on ur ubuntu 8.10. but your best bet would be to use aptoncd in the second case, its a no no, |
nonoy:I really dont know what to say. first of all , , i would presume that your are a newbie at this things , and u obviously read about ubuntu before you decided to install it on ur PC , you did you research right? i would like to presume this because it is what a reasonable person would do. secondly for people to be able to help you u have to provide more information what version of ubuntu did you install? (oh i just saw u post about ubuntu ultimate to correct an impression, ubuntu ultimate is not an official version of ubuntu, it is a seperate project which uses an ubuntu based but added some extras like codecs, and some other stuffs which doesnt ship with the standard ubuntu desktop) what packages did you install that made the internet stop working? also we need to know the type of hardware your system is using so that we can tailor a guide to fit that hardware so open Terminal (Application/Accessories/Terminal/) and copy and paste the following code inside lspci | grep Network press enter and post the output it gives u here i can see from your location that you are based in Abuja , am also based in Abuja and would be glad to help you . |
i doubt that first of what graphic driver are u running? ubuntu ships with only free and opensource software hence only free and open source hardware will work on it out of the box like Intel hardwares (wireless card and graphic card) other closed source hardware would work but u have to use a tool called Hardware Driver which u can find in Systems/Administration/Hardware Drivers lunch the tool and if your system needs a particular closed source driver to work then it would office to download it for you. |
oyb:thanks mate |
oyb:are RAMs that cheap now? i mean DDR2 , that means a 2gb RAM should be like 5k can you confirm this for me please |
I dont really like the slackware model, for a minimalist distro i choose arch u might want to read my review on it http://bigbrovar./2009/03/16/archlinux-the-best-way-to-kiss/ about puppy, i have it installed on my usb stick which a carry with me everyware and ready to use when the need demands. if i work into a cafe , i just pop in my puppy and i dont have to use their crappy windows which probably has a keylogger |

, really not finding this funny at all. if its a bug in simplemachine then i would understand, it would be nice if we get official confirmation from nairaland admin this issue .
, anyway am glad that it works for you. cheers
, if u dont break u dont learn
