if my memory serves me right ubuntu ultimate 1.6 is based on ubuntu gutsy gibbon , which is actually an older version of ubuntu. i could link u a guide on how to solve ur problem , cus i think i had them too with gutsy , but wtf i think its better u grab a copy of the current ubuntu called hardy heron or if u like easy install u could try linux mint which is based on ubuntu but easier to install and use , and am quite positive that things would work better about the wifi , u would have to supply further info on that , u can grab a copy of linux mint here http://ftp.heanet.ie/pub/linuxmint.com/stable/5/LinuxMint-5-r1.iso personally i prefer it to ubuntu ultimate which i consider to be too bloated and buggy , but that is just me , i |
I think Netbook are here to stay , although i dont see them replacing laptops just as the latter didn't replace desktops. each device has a role to play.if all u do is surf the net, note taking, watch videos/music. abd general lite computing then the netbook is for you. i know many pple u use 10% of their laptop potential for such pple a netbook would be ideal, its also good for road worriors and business trip .we had a meeting with some members of African Development Bank recently and one of them brought his Netbook to the meeting and it was sweet.although it runs windows xp .which brings me to my second point . the NetBook field is where GNU/Linux shines the most . because its modular and open , allowing u to easily remove unwanted stuff from the kernel and sliming it down to fit a specific hardware need .this is something that cant be achieved in windows. last month a visiting prof from the US was here and his son had an eeepc that ran XP . his experience on it gave me the impression that putting xp on that device was a big disservice to humanity .The device was as slow as hell, and shutting it down require u to go to grab a coffee and wait, what about the start up? dont even ask. i felt really sad for him . and being a nice guy i got my geek on and installed eeebuntu netbook remix(a version of Ubuntu modified esp for netbooks) for him via usb install .before u know it the eeepc was transformed , it was the most amazing interface i have ever seen on a computer , everything worked , hibernation, webcam, wireless, and it was fast and snappy , all this with a cool interface that would have many mac users drool . till this mo the guy sends his regards from the US. test on most netbooks as shown that the Linux version usually outperforms the xp version by a distance.as a linux user am pretty excited to see how things plays out with the netbook |
@bigbrovarNaa screen and size of keypad puts me off . am getting a Nokia N810 with 8gb mini sd card.add that to the 2 gb card inbuilt and u have 10gb space , still a far cry from my 16gb itouch.but unlike a netbook its pocketable, its touch screen and unlike the itouch its free and made to be hacked with it i can Hardware-wise, it's a 400MHz TI OMAP pseudo-dual-core (400MHz ARM CPU with 300MHz TI DSP). Hardware-wise, it runs the Maemo OS, which is a modified version of Debian GNU/Linux.Overall I am extremely impressed with it. from what i have seen in reviews As far as customizations, the thing comes with a terminal by default and can and a quick look around shows that the OS uses: (1) Standard armel Debian port, Linux 2.6.21 (2) Standard apt-get, with a user-friendly frontend (3) Standard freedesktop.org .desktop file launchers (4) A Mozilla based browser that even takes minimally modified Mozilla plugins! and supports flash, ajax, and java scripts (5) A slideout qwerty keypad (6)webcam for making video calls with skype With that said, there's great room for extensibility on this for example i could install Andriod,Debian,or KDE4 on it even win 3.1 if i wanted. plus its easy to compile a normal ubuntu application for the maemo OS, for me its just the perfect device. i have placed and order for it through Nairaland's brume .he is also helping me get the dell xps m1330 (the ubuntu version) , in anticipation i have setup a webbased media server for streaming mp3s and video via wireless with the Nokia IT using the webbrowser |
@ sojioguns , Ex Inferis maybe u guys could create a MAC thread here on Nairaland. because we have some mac users here and it would be cool to share ideas and tips .just like we have the ubuntu-linux thread , just my 2cent |
@Ex Inferis You are quite right Netbook is a very limited especially when talking about the potential of GNU/Linux .However you would agree with me that the biggest problem of linux and why it has such limited market share is due to FUD. lots of people still see GNU/Linux as for Geeks worse of some people dont even know that GNU/Linux has a GUI such is the amount of FUD that People have for GNU/Linux .why am excited about the Netbooks is that eee pc and co have shown people that GNU/Linux is not bad at all .i mean it has revealed what GNU/Linux has become to people .They Now see that even an 8 year old can run Linux on his PC without any problem. for me that would help in the long run to change attitude and perceptions. About it being too simple .well are you surprised after all netbooks are just meant to do simple things. and its nice for a change that an adjective "too simple" is now being used to qualify a GNU/Linux device . if i get an eee like device i would use eeebuntu netbook remix .which is just too cool and and has the best interface i have ever seen for a netbook.its simply amazing.i installed it on an eee of the son of one of our visiting prof from the US. and he was blown away by it. Personally i dont like the small screen and the tiny keypad so am getting the Nokia N810 which i can use for all my Cloud computing and lite hacking . |
@bigbrovar you don't need to open a port. you only do that if ipfw was manually enabled and firewall rules are applied. however if port 22 is closed why not try 23? just telnet the ip of the fileserver to confirm the port is open (it will ask for your password if it is, but of course you knew that), or try slogin.the firewall rule is fine , i use scp on all my GNU/Linux clusters without problem , again i think its a problem with the mac , or most likely a setting i didnt understand , which i didn't have enough patients to explore , anyway just check your firewall rules, go to Terminal and type sudo ipfw list, if port 22 is closed then you will probaly see " deny ip from any to any" in the ipsw list. modify the rules to "allow ip from any to any"i actually don't use the mac anymore , like i said its great and cool interface , but nothing i can't get in gnome , which i very much used to , remember i do use Linux and i like it a lot more than i do windows, and it has its strenght over OS X, but the problem with Linux is too many distros. i wish they could just get togeter and make an Uber Linux to end all OS.its not going to happen , many people share your view , but it ignore the very foundation that GNU/Linux is built on , openness and freedom , and choice , there are over 10 thousand distros probably but you wont have a problem if You know what You want , in the end there are just 3 major type of distros from which every other distro kind of evolved from , Debian,RedHat, and Slackware , , and the huge number of distros are there to meet the varying needs of users .those who runs servers , prefer RedHat,CENTOS,Slackware etc,Desktop users prefer Ubuntu,Mint,Opensuse, fedora, low hardware use, puppy, goblinx, etc hope You get the point , but underneath its still the same Kernel, the same gnome, kde, xfce, lxde etc, just different ways of doing the same thing , i for me that brings motivation and competition , with freedom comes elegance , afterall, the potential is there.Just look at the netbook revolution |
@ Ex Inferis u are spot on , apple makes great product , we all know that , even Mark Shuttleworth the man behind ubuntu admits that Linux real competition is apple, the macbook pro is what a computer should be , but like u said , freedom for me comes first , i tot about getting a mac and installing ubuntu on it but , when i saw the dell ubuntu xps m1330 i was sold and so far it just works , and its a great machine which IMHO can stand up to the Macbook pound for pound , but that is just me , about the ssh thingie , my problem was with ssh into the machine , and i could not scp , i had some files on the mac that i wanted to store on my fileserver , i tried scp but it didnt work . maybe port 22 is closed by default on a mac , |
Gamine:fortunately many people agree with me and they don't buy apple for the same reason , they are over priced , i could get something cheaper and just as classy for half the price of a macbook , e.g dell xps m1330 , read about it , |
Acer make decent laptops , and i would pick them over HP because for some times now HP hardware has been suspect, Apple ? No way , Agreed they make the coolest Hardware , but for me Computer is not just about cool , i also need freedom, control and full ownership , IMHO , apple thrives on hype and perception , and we have 5 MAC mini here at work , and as the sysadmin i kept them where there are really needed , the store room. Ok to be fair i tried using one , i really tried , but after a failed attempt at installing ssh , and getting scp to work , i lost hope and gave up , yeah it feels cool when u move the mouse to the bottom and some little icons get bigger , but the one click mouse and the whole enviroment just , pisses me , really is apple has easy as claimed?, because as a power user i felt very much in a cage , and all that for what a mac book of 120gb 1gb ram for 250k , its insane , please give me a dell xps m1330 , yeah and make it the ubuntu preinstalled , , 320gb(7200rpm free sensor),4gb ram, core 2duo 2.2,fingerprint reader,2.0 webcam how much does it cost 135k, i had an ipod touch once , but after getting tired of playing hide and seek with jobs over i device i own , but which he controls , i promptly sold it and got a nokia n810 , never felt happier , apple makes great hardware and awesome software , but please give me freedom |
hi brume , a friend at the office might be interested in a desktop to add to the xps i ordered please lets try keep in touch |
install this tool called startupmanager its in synaptic , it provide a clean gui way of doing just that |

i would appreciate if some one could sell me the Nokia N810 , http://www.nokia.co.uk/A4630128 dont worry i wont waste ur time , i am ready to buy it for a fair price |
You agree with the webmaster, Oluwaseun Osewa, that:nothing wrong with the above , at least it doesnt say it has exclusive right to your content , its just there to make sure that decency is followed |
tpia:at least Firefox,Konqueror , amd seamonkey don't have that type of licensing , but i can't speak for all browsers , only for what i use , and that is beside the point , if a license tries to rip u off your hard earn intellectual property , its bad , its very bad , especially for those of us who blog or have display our music or art work online, |
Before we all start getting hard-ons with the chrome browser you might want to spend some time to Read the Licensing Agreement which You must have Blindly Clicked yes to Here's the relevant section 11.1 of the Chrome EULA: End User Agreement 11. dude , run the following command when the phone is plugged into the computer and post the output of each command here
lsusb when u have ran this commands , now run this last one but before u do remove the phone from your pc then sudo tail -f /var/log/messagesafter running the command then plugin your phone , u watch the terminal very closely u would notice a change in the command output when the phone is plugged in , post the out up of that change here , all this would help us know the type of hardware u are using , and help us help u solve the problem , cheers |
Amarok is argueably the best music player in the world. (ok that is my Opinion) But its really that good and i have yet to come across any music player that comes close .with Wikipedia lookup and lyrics download Magnatune integration, allowing no-cost full listening of all the music in their catalog, and DRM-free purchasing. sync with any music player like your ipod or iphone . the good news is that this awesome software just got better with the release of Amarok 2.0 beta , which i installed few hours ago , and i was amazed at what i saw , i couldnt believe my eyes , here was a re branded amarok equipped with KDE 4 technology like Phonon for audio and Solid for device interaction, along with extensive use of SVG and Plasma for the new interface. Amarok will also have better integration with online services with Magnatune, Jamendo, Ampache and MP3tunes already supported. A robust services framework will make adding support for other services much easier This release will also add support for Windows and Mac OS X. for those on ubuntu add this to your source list deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/project-neon/ubuntu hardy main sudo apt-get update or reload synaptics then sudo apt-get install amarok-nightly here is the screenshot i took after i installed it , https://i365.photobucket.com/albums/oo99/bigbrovar/amarok.jpg https://i365.photobucket.com/albums/oo99/bigbrovar/amaroknewsplashscreen.jpg |
I have a fairly used Ipod Touch and a P1i , both are very clean and come with all the original boxed package , the p1i comes in with a 2gb memory card , and the Ipod -Touch is 16gb and has already been jail broken https://www.gadgetstown.com/imgs/0707/sony_ericsson_p1.jpg AND https://www.letsgodigital.org/images/artikelen/64/apple-ipod-touch.jpg the p1i goes for N30,000 while the Ipod Touch goes for N25,000 08022982697 am based in abuja please this is my best price , any call about price negotiations (except for a higher price ) would be a waste of time . |
@Bigbrovargood i will include those tools i was actually talking about repo apps for the apt on cd , what i want to do is have seperate apps on cd for different repos , hence i plan to download all the packages in medibuntu repo and make it iinto a aptcd just for medibuntu , same for lxde etc , about the program u taked about , i will surely add them , |
there is a tool on ubuntu called wine , which allows u to install native windows applications , it works with must windows applications but its not guaranteed to work with all , so u might want to install those apps u have on windows that have no Ubuntu equivalents , |
afo am making a new aptcd as i speak , i need u to give me a list of apps u want me to add , right now i have almost all the usuals but i want to make this really big , we have a central update server here , so already there are about 9gb or packages on our apt-cacher but am adding more packages , if there is any specific program in the repos that u want me to add like games and the likes please let me know , |
fanistic:did u read my last post? , i said u dont have to download it , just give me a week i would download xubuntu , am currently working on a apton cd ( its a dvd that contains applications for ubuntu that u can install on ur system if u dont have internet connection) trhat would be over 10gb big , it would contain all the ubuntu juice u would ever need without downloading one kobo from the net , and its free , i will be through with it in a week , and no u might not see xubuntu in Village , like i said ubuntu is free and its not commercial like window or other verison for Linux , Ubuntu is community driven , get it , |
Am so grateful for all the help been rendered here, now for sure i would install linux. I basically use my pc for watching movies, listening to music.in that case they are lots of applications that would fit ur needs , no problem there , I got some nokia applications stored in my pc and use the nokia pc suite in installin for frnds.sorry mate Nokia dont make PCSuit for Linux , but they are work arounds , u can tranfer files via blutooths, and if ur phone has usb capability then u can use that too , . I Also transfer music to ipods hope linux can work wit itunes 7. ouch , apple dont make itunes for Linux either , but guess what , i have an ipod touch and i sync it with Linux with now sweat , i even do it wirelessly sumtin impossible with itunes so ur ipod would work with linux no problem cus there are lots of itunes alternative in Linux , they may not look quite as good , but they sure kick itunes ass when it comes to performance , Use a bluetooth dongle also and requires to instal the driver can that work also bluesolidl 6.your bluetooth would work plug and play , i have never encountered a bluetooth problem with Linux b4 , I sometimes use my phone in connecting to the internet wit nokia pc suite can that work also.no sweat , even starcoms evdo works with linux , u wont eve need the drivers , just plug it in , run some simple commands and beng u are in I guess i have a complete codec pack that enables me play any movie file such as dvd, avi , mp3, etc are al these available on xtauntu. by default (x)ubuntu ships with only free software , which means that ur mp3 and dvds avi etc wont work out of the box , but u can install the codecs that are needed with one command , , u can use and easy gui tool too , If xubuntu can do all these and more for me, am on for it.yeah ubuntu would do them , but some would require extra tweaking to get them to work , Wld have prefered the ubuntu because that what i really want don't really know about xubuntu.well the only diff btw ubuntu and xubuntu is the interface , xubuntu uses the xfce desktop interface which is ideal for low config systems like urs , while ubuntu ships with gnome interface with is mush more hardware hungry , i for the best linux experience go with xubuntu , But if its the same no probs. My p3 256mb 755mhz works fine wit xp sp 2u know when u first install windows its blazingly fast , by the time u add anti virus and install other 3rd party programs then it start to drag and bitch on u , that is one area linux differ , linux is as fast as the first install even after u ahve install 100s of softwares , with some tweaks ur system would be very fast on ubuntu linux , am working on a package which would be big and would conatin tools for light systems , its should be around 3 dvds when am thru , then i will send it to lag and then write a detailed guide on how to have resurrect that old hardware that is dying under the weight of windows , it should be ready next week , so if u can wait , |
You guys are impressing me oh! Makin it seem have been missing something great for a long time.u sure have I would join the community ok but How do i get the softwares already on dvd?go to this site and call the number closest to you Is it for sale and where. nope , everything is free , it would only just bring medium for so that the files can be tranfered to u (empty dvd, storage drive etc) installation can also be done for u free , For new users like me which would be better xubuntu or ubuntu itself. My pc is p3 256 ram and 20gig harddisk can ubuntu work perfectly or i go for xubuntu. yeah dont go for ubuntu , go for xubuntu , i would advise u even install a very light desktop enviroment , dont worry i would soon post a guide on how u can do that , i recently install ubuntu for one of a co worker and i customized it so that it was blazingly fast , . Am still readin from the website to learn more but need more info before i join the communityyeah that is a good idea , read and look before u plunge , a hint on what u should read on 1- what is your computer habit and what software do u use the must and u cant do without, 2-if u do have access to the internet , what medium , wireless, dialup modem, evdo cards,Lan , 3 do u have a device connected to the computer like mp3,ipod etc what are the drivers u have on ur system , e.g ur vga drivers etc , u can paste the answers to this questions here and it would be attended to cheers |
Please i need an honest answer. Can u ever enjoy the use of linux without internet connection on your pc? For those who don't have internet connection at home. I need to know before i try the much hyped linux os. Cos i don't av internet and would not make sense changin if linux wouldnt work like windows without internet.one thing u must understand is that unlike windows where the relationship is the company and the user , in Linux its a community , Linux is based on the community , and the most important thing u need to run Linux is to be part of that community , and its easy , just ask for help and before u know it the community embraces u and sort of your issues , that for me is the must awesome thing about Linux , people sacrifice to make life better for one another , so at any one time u know u are not alone , back to your question , the must important thing u need to run Linux is a community , and we have one here in Nigeria , www.ubuntunigeria. from there u can get dvds of all the packages u would ever need and all the help and guide that u would need to help u settle down , Linux doesnt give u wings, it wont solve your family problem,it wont make a Girl/Guy like u (actually that depends) what Linux would give u is a platform that is stable, free and open source , and it would make u part of a community were everyone cares for each other , were development is driven by passion not profit . were the developer sees u has a brother and not a customer , where u are expected to contribute back to the community the best way u can rather than be just a parasitic user , yes problem might come, but when they do u wont be alone , if u agree to this , then Linux is definitely for u , |
can we talk on yahoo my id is bigbrovar , its better that way if not run sudo apt-get updatetell me what the problem is |
hmmm i noticed some wired stuffs on ur source list which i have corrected and i will paste shortly first for some wired reasons u are using an older repo ( a fiesty repo) for ur avant windows navigator , and a gutys repo for ur kubuntu 4.0 , this is not good as it can cus problems for u , like i said i have fixed the problems , so what i want u to do now is to replace your source list with the one i posted here below remember to backup ur sources before u make any changes sudo cp /etc/apt/sources.list /etc/apt/sources.bak so now open the source list sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list then delete everything there and replace them with this # newer versions of the distribution. |
i think there is a mistake in ur source.llist file , to make it easy run this command on terminal gedit /etc/apt/sources.listthis would open your soure.list config file in a text editor , now i want u to post the whole content here so that i can see what is wrong from ur post i think there is a problem with line one of the config |
mehn pipmaster am happy that u have finally gotten the internet working , can u please inform us how u were able to archive this , in a way u remain me of when i started linux , i too had initial problems connecting my modem with ubuntu , and just like u with time it worked , here were some of my early post , down memory lane Re: Ubuntu Linux successfully dual booted with vista and fiesty my first ever linux os so what next, i guess i would need the support of every linux guru in the house, i havent still been able to get my merlin v620 evdo pcmi card working please any suggestion would be welcomed |
and u seem to be online hook me up on yahoo my i d is bigbrovar |
is this ur modem , https://www.mtnonline.com/images/G_custom_card.jpg i had to go to mtn to scott for the name of the modem , u might be using , the infor u pasted helped and i think i mgiht have come with what the problem is and a possible solution but i want to comfirm sumthings first , |
