Its impossible to have the best laptop for all purposes. for enterprise use IBM/Lenovo Thinkpads are iconic. for gaming its Alienwares and Voodoo . for Arts and Graphic Design Mac and HP is considered good for home use. Overall when it comes to hardware i think and the there is a clear winner here and that is Mac computers. u just cant take it from them. there always set the pace for other hardware makers to follow. we have 5 mac minis at work and i can attest to the awesome piece of technology those computers are.but what puts me off apple generally is the OS / hardware lock down. I love to have absolute control of my PC both software and hardware. and in as much as i feel apple innovations its the only thing that keep me off anything Mac. if i pay for a machine, be it a car or a laptop i want to have full control and flexibility to do exactly what i want. i cant get this with Mac computers. sure it possible to install another OS beside X on a Mac but AFAIK anything outside windows is not supported and would be hack job even then the machine till feels locked down. hence i settled for a dell xps m1330 that came preinstalled with ubuntu. xps m1330 is one of the best laptop of 2008/2007. and so far am pretty happy with it. |
mufasa:hmm the kppp thing is probably a bug. hmm have you tried gnome-ppp its does the same thing , you can hook one network to kppp and hook the other to gnome ppp, here is a trick , once you have gnome ppp installed start it and , now copy the wvdial conf file for the network you want to assign to gnome ppp to .wvconf in your home directory ( its a hidden file so you have to go to view then check "show hidden file" in your browser. hence once you start gnome-ppp again it should connect with the network assigned to it. hope it works. |
Well nuff said matey, just don't be to confrontational.when does pointing out a misconception become a confrontation , dude the world doesnt revolve round you , I never laid a blame on anyonenever said you did because even if u wanted you have no one to blame , , using a pc aint supposes to be like rocket science you know.nope its not and that is why i stopped using windows Myself and a million out there having little snags here and there can't all be inept you dig. that is not for me to say , but you cant compare apples to oranges, get a computer that ships with linux and see if u have any nag , but when u installed linux on a computer built for windows be happy that it works but with little nag here and there , nags that can be fixed from a little googling or posting in the right forums. dude that is not rocket science its common sense, Well i'm getting the hang and one day will be weaned off you or is it "your spoon"my point is that day should be today , now! . there are great resource on line that would accelerate your emaciation from bigbrovar , just use them , google is really your friend, so spend more time with it Enjoy weekendyeah iam , testing out fedora 10 and its pretty awesome and don't think i'm letting you off, any wahala i run into i must ask you for solution since you ve installed for over 500 peeps.i will try my best , am always open to help but its not a guarantee that i will be available when u need me , again google and ubuntuforums would be your best bet, beside you are not inept or are you |
Guy why all this vitriol? All i did was to share what i was going through and you ve started yarning like this. Na wa o. So much for the community o. Well if thats how you run a community MIsta then you aint doing a great job at it. First to make one point clear , am not running or forming or building any community, am already part of the FOSS community. so get that clear , most of what i do here is just to bring the idea of FOSS (Free and Open Source Software) to people make them know that there is an alternative, You are trying but try to encourage the newbies and don't push us away. talk about helping newbies i have paid my dues , i have written lots and lots of pages on FOSS and i have personally installed it on more than 500 people FOC , but you see i can't spoon feed you u have got to make your own effort. we have google, ubuntuforums, and thousands of documentation about linux, all you have to do is try and do a little research , that was what i did, so i know and have an idea of what am getting into. you installed a 64bit ubuntu so naturally u should have known that it get lesser support compared to the 32bit, , if you didnt and got beaten then put the blame where it belongs. Well it can be frustrating when you don't get things done as easily as you envisaged.again never said it was going to be easy , the problem many people is that there expect linux to be like windows, its not, linux is not windows is not windows is not windows. it doesnt means its harder than windows , its just different from what you used too , so if you have have done you home work then the transition would be easy, I'm here with ubuntu and i will use it till i'm tired and move to something new.good all you now need is the right attitude , know that me and thousand of other people involved in FOSS do it for the love and fun we get from it , not for the money, we need you to if there is a problem , file a bug at launchpad , or ask that is what makes FOSS unique its free and participatory , |
the ironic in ur statement is striking. first of all its the person who has internet that would need flash, why would you need flash is u dont have an interrnet connection, and btw adobe just announce the first flash palyer that support 64bit os even on windows both xp and vista 64 bit lack a native flash player, http://www.google.com/search?q=flash+player+for+vista+64+bit so ubuntu is not to blame, you should have knen what u were getting into before using a 64 bit OS like i said i my earlier post , there lack supports compared to 32bit. and ur statement about uubuntu without internet, well same goes for windows, infact its worse with windows, in case u installed a laptop something u got second hand without driver cd , good luck to u, were u you find the drivers from, were do u find codecs for dvd, avi, mp4 etc, who do u get pdf reader from, say u want to burn an iso on a fresh windows, were would u download it from, ? ubuntu a freshly installed ubuntu is more functional than a freshly installed windows xp or vista, because with ubuntu, basic tools like office,cd burner, photo editor, a chat client that support most protocols, pdf reader, come out of the box, sure u would need to download and install codecs to play mp3 just as i need to download a codec to play my ogg or aac files in windows, dude ubuntu is about a community , we all come together to make ubuntu, if its not working for u , then use what does, and stop spreading FUD |
Double N: mufasa: mufasa:first if all there is always google. and you can find great help at www.ubuntuforums.org i never forced any one to use ubuntu. and even then i have tried to give guide and written documentations about ubuntu here www.ubuntunigeria. and www.bigbrovar. go there and u would find great resource for what u need. to the issue at hand , i wrote an guide in my blog about multimedia and ubuntu http://bigbrovar./2008/12/17/multimedia-codecs-and-tools-for-ubuntu/ any file with .tar.bz or tar.gz extension is most like a source package , what u downloaded is the source-code of amarok which can only be installed if u compile it, now compiling an application is not a noobie task. and i would not advise u to take that route. your best bet is to add a 3rd party repository that has it to your source list, the two links (ubuntuniegria) would show u how to do this. you can learn more here http://www.ubuntu-unleashed.com/2008/05/howto-install-latest-project-neon.html about the guy that wants to install amd 64 on 32 my advise is if u are a noob then run a 32 bit OS 64bit has lesser support , but to the question . , u have to installl via cli , put the file on ur desktop and run this cd $HOME/Desktopthen dpkg -i -- force-architecture name-of-file to install about the dude trying to install ubuntu on VB personally i dont support that , if u need ubuntu install it on ur harddrive. am not sure what the problem could be but google is your friend. |
I dont come to programing section often , infact this may be my first post here , am not a programmer (even though i wish i was) but this post spoke my mind. am very active in the computer section. 97% of my post are there , but over the last 6 months i have watched with agony as things have turned down for the worse. , its now soo soo bad that am considering leaving and not coming back , i owe a lot to this forum. i have meant friends and learnt things that changed my life , yeah radically changed my life for the better. so am quite passionate about this place. i try hard to give back to the community what i have learnt . back then it was fun. we had lots of cool guys, darkmanzoro, fisayo, afolabi, esquire, ravy, chxta, texazzpete, oyb , and many more that i cant quite remember their name, this guys were the pillar of computer sections , now its easier to see rainbow at night than to see their post. its really sad now when i open the computer thread its mostly scams , pple selling and buying. even the guys with problem hardly get expert advise , and there is total lack of intellectual/education discussion , Nairaland for me is now watery. and i think a lot needs to change to bring it back to the glory days , N.B am sure this only affect the technology section. as the romance and other section is seeing a boom in trade |
kopete supports webcam , its very good too , you can install it from synaptic , you would also need into install the libjasper runtime. also in synaptic i would advise u to follow this guide that i have written for those new to ubuntu , it covers most of the basics things you would need and how to get round your system. http://ubuntunigeria./2008/06/02/ubuntu-guide-after-installation/ |
This is the funnest Video online, it would crack you up with laughter. show what happens when you run The Matrix program on windows xp. http://www.collegehumor.com/video:1886349 be warned if u are watching it from an office, this video would make you burst out with laughter. dont say i didnt warn u |
Thanks again for the Dell XPS M1330 and the Nokia N810 , both work like a charm. glad i met you and its good to be able to shop online just like the rest of the world , albeit through a trusted proxy. i wrote a blog post about how it all went , in case anyone wants to have an idea of how it would be ordering or buying stuff from brume i decided to give you an insight using my experience , PS i will definitely be in the bank today to pay for the card adapter. thanks for everything http://bigbrovar./2008/11/13/road-to-freedom-and-a-trust-well-earned/ |

Thanks bigbrovar. Actually i have been following the release for the past week. I even checked the site around 12am yesterday but they had not released it yet.well ubuntu release sont usually happen over night , it takes time to update all the mirrors around the world and to make sure that all the last minute bugs are ironed out before the official release is pushed out. so on a whole expect a release to come around noon (nigerian time ) on release day. I have a question please, is it true that the linux kernel or the gnome or kde desktops have been steadily getting bigger and resource hungry. Icompared to earlier version yeah gnome, kde and even the linux kernel has added more fat. this is necessary because of the new improvements and extra line of codes that are added everyday to improve the stability of the general usage of the LInux . things like compiz fusion desktop effects, more hardware driver support, like improved wireless support etc makes the linux OS even more user friendly improving over all user experience. however it should be noted that even though the various modules that make up the linux desktop like gnome tools and kde and even the linux kernel have picked up a little more fat over the years, its still very slim compared to a windows OS or the Mac . that is why even ubuntu seen by many to be a fat distribution by linux standard would work perfectly on a celeron based laptop with 356 or ram. also it should be noted that linux is very modular and easy to slim down. for example u can download ubuntu and use it with a GUI interface that is light and has a small memory footprint on hardware like XFCE or LXDE or FLUXBOX OR ICEWM, etc are example of user interfaces that would make a P3 run like a core 2 duo , so u dont have to use the gnome and kde of this world.if there would be too heavy for your hardware. |
6 months after a successful Release of its second Long Term support release. Ubuntu stepped up the gear again with the release of the latest version of its very popular free and open source operating system. Ubuntu 8.10 aka Intrepid Ibex would be released later today. i have downloaded and installed the beta and so far its been smooth. the latest version of ubuntu comes with a number of improvements such as Features 3G Support For constant connectivity public WiFi has limitations. Improvements to the network manager in Ubuntu 8.10 makes it simple to detect and connect to 3G networks and manage connectivity. This connectivity is delivered through an inbuilt 3G modem, through 'dongle' support, through a mobile phone or through Bluetooth. It is a complex environment that Ubuntu 8.10 simplifies through a single interface and the auto-detection of many of the most popular devices. Tab support for Folders Nautilus the Filemanager for ubuntu now has ability to enable you open folders in tabs, just has it is done with most web browsers. Write Ubuntu to and Install from a USB Drive Ubuntu has been made available to users as an image for CDs and DVDs to date. But CDs and DVDs are slower, less portable and less convenient than USB sticks. Now, a simple application in Ubuntu will allow users to write Ubuntu to a USB drive, even a modified version of Ubuntu with their data on it, so it can be carried everywhere to plug in and use on any machine. Guest Sessions In a world of 'always on' pervasive computing it is more likely that users lend their computers to colleagues or friends at conferences, cafes or at parties so they can check email, etc. Guest sessions allow users to lock down a session easily so a guest can use the full system without interference with programs or data. BBC Content Starting the media players within Ubuntu (Totem Movie Player and Rhythmbox) launches a menu of selected content from the broadcaster that is free to air. This is a mixture of video, radio and podcasts and available in high quality, much of it playable using non-proprietary codecs. Content is constantly updated via the corporation's stream and will vary dependent on location, though some content will be available for every user. Latest Gnome 2.24 Desktop Environment* The GNOME desktop environment project releases its latest version which is incorporated into Ubuntu 8.10. New features include a new instant messaging client, a built-in time tracker, , improved file management and toolbars plus better support for multiple monitor use with the ability to set screen resolution by monitor. lots of impovement under the hood like the new linux kernel Linux kernel 2.6.27 a significant release with better hardware support and numerous bug-fixes. X.Org 7.4 X.Org 7.4, the latest stable version of X.Org, is available in Intrepid. This release brings much better support for hot-pluggable input devices such as tablets, keyboards, and mice. At the same time this will allow the great majority of users to run without a /etc/X11/xorg.conf file. A new failsafe X is introduced, to give better tools for troubleshooting X startup failures. * X.org is the GUI engine for Ubuntu and most Unix based operating system. once released (later today) ubuntu 8.10 can be downloaded here http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu . for does with little bandwidth and wont be able to download Ubuntu you can request a free copy here https://shipit.ubuntu.com/ and a free copy would be delivered to you door step in say 2 weeks time.

The Mistake we some of us make is assuming that the 30million would actaully be used for national development. tell you what there is no guarantee that would be the case. in my IMHO i would rather the government spend it on hosting the U17 which would in turn help build some stadiums, improve some infrastructures, and generally put NIgeria in the positive news for a while. yes we have a poor maintenance and the stadias would be left to rot anyway. but better that than for the money to end up in some sick presidents will. i have a feeling the decision was influenced by the sudden downfall of the price or oil. which nigeria's budget is tided to. if that is the case then i guess it might be a good decision after all |
@ Inferis does wvdial run on the Mac if Y then he can try that cause that is what i always use on my system and it works pretty fine. |
i think i found a good guide to help you with your wireless problem , it might involve changing your wireless manager to wicd. here is the link http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=792158 am not sure if you feel comfortable using the commandline if the answer is no then buzz me when next you are online so we can go thru the procedure together . |
I would like to say a big thank you to Brume helping me get the dell xps m1330 ubuntu preinstalled , Nokia N810 and a host of other accessories . without you there is no way i would have gotten this products here in NIgeria , he is very professional and kept on updating me on the status of my goods.which shipped ahead of time. and he is very reasonable with his price too even helping me save some money in the process. its really great to see Nigerians doing something like this and i would recommend him to anybody who wants to get things from outside the country. especially those stuffs that you might not find here. |
thanks i will check them up |
Am new in abuja and i would like to know which network has the best 3g coverage so that i can use it with phone , also i stay off town like 10km from the airport , how wide is the 3g coverage in abuja? thanks in advance |
Djcn:dude to be frank i no longer use vista on windows so i am not in the best position to help you out. that is the reason why i dont support the thread anymore because i am very rusty when it comes to trouble shooting windows problems nowaday and am not as good as i was, but am sure some1 here would come to your aid , i did some search on google but i could not test out the results which looks promising so u can try them out your self http://www.google.com.ng/search?hl=en&client=firefox-a&rls=com.ubuntu%3Aen-GB%3Aunofficial&q=VPN+vista+problem&btnG=Search&meta= |
@Ex Inferis dude i want to know your take on this, i have we have a time capsule in the office which is connected to the network and mounted (through fstab) on my desktop/laptop using samba what i would like to know is if the time capsule can be used in setting up a upnp server, cause am thinking of setting up a media server for streaming videos an all my devices using the campus network , |
bigrovar (m)in case you didn't read the first page , as u can see the purpose of the thread is not to rant about vista , its for people who have a problem and need solution for their problem. so please lets keep it clean , if u have an issue with vista/ms and would like to rant about it the u can always open another thread , lets stop calling each other names and keep this thread clean and healthy for people who really need help . |
@ sojioguns and Djcn guys guys try and be matured. this is a support thread lets not turn this flame war between OS. if you have a problem with vista or Mac please start a new thread , i didn't create this thread for vista hater/mac lovers to express their love and hate , this is a support thread for people having problems with their vista so that they can get help . not a place to rant. so lets keep it that way , u can always take you flame else where . |
my girl make me complete |
The preinstalled office that comes with most laptops pre-installed is usually a trial. my advise for you is to either buy a genuine version of office of which is very expensive by the way. or you can use free alternatives like open office which is what i use and it does everything i need from and office package . you can download a free copy http://ftp.belnet.be/pub/mirror/ftp.openoffice.org/stable/3.0.0/OOo_3.0.0_Win32Intel_install_wJRE_en-US.exe . you might be ask to register but the registration is voluntary and its a free resgitration . |
cool , btw how are things there, did u get those things that didnt work before to work if not am online and bored. and am in the mood to help (at least in the next 1 hour) so buzz me when u are ready cheers! |
I don't believe ubuntu would run smoothly on 64mb of ram even though is the command line version unless of course you're ready to continue tweaking removing moudles etc(look at this http://kmandla./ubuntu-gtk12-remix/). What you need is linux for really old pcs. The top contenders are:It would run but removing some un necessary modules would sure help, https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/LowMemorySystems having said that i think its just better to install Puppy preferably the latest version 4.0 which its super awesome. @Bigbrovaram back to ubuntu on my work laptop but i still run mints on the desktop . mint is cool for new users and those u just want to install and start work immediately without messing with codecs and the likes, i also like the defaults applications like Thunderbird . and the lack of useless stuff that i never use like egika on the whole ubuntu is still ubuntu anyday and u just can't beat the brand. |
64mb of ram , dude i dont know of any Ubuntu derivative that would run on that thing , your best bet is to install the CLI version of ubuntu , then install a lite desktop environment like icewm.but that would involve some good commandline kung-fu skills. also u can brag puppy linux , its very lite and should work fine on your hardware |
i must say that atheros wireless cards are a bitch in Linux , there have refused to release linux version of their drivers so the only option u are often left with is to use reverse engineering either by using the restricted driver which dont often work or using Ndiswrapper which allows u to use windows driver on ubuntu either way , when we get to the river we would cross it together , dont worry i will hold ur hands , just let me know when u are down download and install the mint , if u have any question before u install let me know . cheers |
hey thanks bro , but i have both already , but its all good am sure there are some out there who might need it , so i will direct them to you |
