flyuche:Funny i dont experience this problem , but some vista users also have it http://forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic.php?t=7796&highlight=vmx+root+mode anyway here is a work around The workaround is to disable KVM: 1. Install "bum" (Boot-up Manager): sudo apt-get install bum 2. Start Boot-up Manager (in systems menu) and untick "Full virtualization on i386 and amd64 hardware - kvm" 3. Click Apply Answer yes to make the change effective right away. |
lynxnoon:I got every single cd i requested for Feisty fawn Gutsy Gibbon Hardy heron Intrepid Ibex and just last week Jaunty Jackalope Am sure the reason you didnt get yours is due to postal mishandling |
@esquire no shaking my brother |
why does using linux breed such arrogance ? Undecided Smiley or is it the admin in you talkinghaba , i wasnt being arrogant my brother , i was just saying the honest truth, if you ask me what are the cool things about linux, and i start ranting about , kernel mode setting, ext4 filesystem, hotplugging for x.org, better gnome notification , gnome-do, network manager 0.7, empathy, devicekit, i can go on and on , you wont understand what am saying unless you eat and breath linux. its just like you telling me the essential features of autocad , it would mean nothing to me , in same light it would be of no use preaching the virtue of linux to you without confusing you with things you have no idea about (which is not an insult no body knows everything you know enough to help you get by) |
@oyb my advise for you is this: Use what you are comfortable with and what works for you. if you are ok and happy with windows by all means you it. I dont believe in forcing people to use linux doing that will always back fire, when you need linux you will know it and you will seek it out. that is the culture of Free and open source software we don't preach we mention and that is why you will never see any fancy linux advert in your TV screen anytime soon. the community is focused on development and improvement. we are talking about the whole nine yards. what good is the most stable ,protected , hardened OS if i cannot get my work done with it?You have zero knowledge of linux and when you speak it shows so just use your windows which you seem to know to well and get on with your life. There is no point highlighting the virtue and advantages of linux to you, it would seem like greek because its a world you have no idea about, its an unknown. so lets keep things that way. Insert QuoteI have heard lots of good stuff about windows 7, seem MS finally got it right with that one, anyway i am bothered little about it. because for me it doesnt change anything. The One reason i use linux is FREEDOM. its gives me complete control over my computer, there is no DRM, EULA, no need to crack anything, i dont have to feel like am breaking the law just because am tweaking my PC, i own my PC in every sense of the world, That is one thing that no windows can ever give me. and if you are someone you careless about this things then Linux is definitely not for you. Linux is more than just an OS its a culture, also collaboration: the development of linux is done is an open and participatory atmosphere , you can have a say in how your OS/Software is developed. you get to interact with the developer on how to make a software better, everything is done in the open, i cant get that with windows or any proprietary software , so even though my laptop can last for weeks without me having to reboot , and its just as fast as day one, and i can format and reinstall my OS and still have all my files and user settings including my wall paper and browser bookmarks intact in the new OS because i my Home directory is mounted on a separate partition . even though i can tweak my OS to my taste without feeling am breaking the law, and i can install any tool i need from a central package manager with the click of a button, even though my system as some of the best virtual effect of any OS, and runs as fast a super computer even though i use just 30% of my system resources. all this means nothing if am not running a free and open source software, if you care less about software freedom then Linux is not for you and you are better off with windows. |
oyb:Cyber criminals target the most vulnerable platform. Vista has been an improvement, but windows xp which majority of people use is a black hole of security vulnerabilities. but people prefer it because vista for all its security gives you a worse user experience that makes you better of with xp+virus yes, linux is good for the server room, but will it ever make it into the office proper?the above lines of reasoning contradict each other. no body runs games in a proper office. and in a proper office linux is more than capable and its even cheaper to run. I work as a sysad for a school www.aust.edu.ng that runs linux on all our computer labs and office computers. we have never had a problem. MS representatives came to our school recently and even they were amazed at what we have been able to achieve with linux and open source. the average computer user don't need extreme computer games, even here in Nigeria very few people have machines with the power to run core games, for the light gamers there are enough games in linuxs to make them happy , again Oyb . i like you , you have a good heart (or so it seems to me) but you speak of something you know little about , it would be better if you dont speak at all, remember the world is watching ![]() |
@ true talk my brother , even MS knows that when it comes to security and stability, linux comes first that is why www.live.com runs linux http://uptime.netcraft.com/up/graph?site=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.live.com%2F http://www.zunescene.com/ runs llinux centOS http://uptime.netcraft.com/up/graph?site=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.zunescene.com%2F http://www.microsoftweblog.com runs linux Redhat http://uptime.netcraft.com/up/graph?site=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.microsoftweblog.com MS secretly runs linux for security and stability dem go come dey tell people say na dem product dey secured pass , what an irony |
lynxnoon:Yeah you will get regular updates because you have added the repository for openoffice to your sources list. Overall am gald you are enjoying your linux experience. |
lynxnoon:I Found a good rapidshare, megaupload downloader. i havent tried it but most of the comments about it says it works fine. http://www.getdeb.net/app/Tucan download the version for intrepid since you use mint6 |
tosh_acer:when Nigerians say do something, we mean something that will affect the lives of the common man. every goverment administraion tries to embark on some elephant project which 1 is a wastew of money, 2 is like window dressing the core problem 3 will only benefit less than 1% of Nigerians. I live in abuja and everybody that comes here knows that Abuja has the best roads in Nigeria. which is ok being the capital city and all. But among all the major cities HP, Kano, Lagos,Ibadan etc Abuja has the least traffic. even the current airport road as it is is not used to optimum level. I have you tried travelling to abuja by road say from lagos? if yes that you wont have made that statement. The state of the road is an eye sore. and i have heard that its even worse in eastern Nigeria. That kind of money will serve the people better if its spent on bad roads that causes accidents that have claimed thousands of life, than polishing a read which is already better than most important roads in Nigeria , a road that will have little benefit to the lives of Nigerians |
esquire:eya , i have downloaded the Mint 7 Release Candidate tried it on Vitualbox looks cool sha esp the artwork and the mint menu is refined. Once the final version is out i will download it and look for a way to get it across to you. The release am really looking forward to is fedora 11. I tried fedora 10 and i was very pleased with it. it is still not as user friendly as ubuntu aspecially in the area of package management. but with Kernal Mode setting now supporting intel cards, and the loads of features that it woul come with i cant wait to try it on my hardware. just download the beta preview and am updating it right now on my system |
This is what you get when you are too in a hurry to sell but not ready to follow the rules that governs a place. talk of the devil, if anyone needs to be examined for devil's shit, its not me, its the person selling wares in a section that is meant for giving computer support. You hear say people sell stuffs in nairaland u didnt even do any research you just came to the computer section and started marketing , its people like you that have devalued the essence of this section by polluting it with your irrelevancies. |
Are you daft!? or just plain stupid ? is does this look like a market place , this section clearly states that its for Using your personal computer, the internet, computer networking, etc. hardware, software.why cant you people adhere to common rules and practises of a forum? nobody is saying dont sell your wares just do it the right way by using the proper section |
lynxnoon:for download managers i use downloadall which is a firefox plugin , it works very well for all my downloads but am afraid its not as good as internet download manager. for most of my downloads i use the commandline wget program which works for me very well. there are a number of download manager for linux but non can stand up to internet download manager , however downloadthemall is very close and getting better https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/201 about the blueman dun support try this post http://traversingmind..com/2009/02/bluetooth-dun-with-linux.html |
bigrovar:Networking is really improving with linux , and if we are to take some of the features for NM 0.7.2 Then It would have LInux Blow past the Mac Airport , the major work right now is to have bluetooth intehration , so that Network manager will have native Bluetooth support right out of the box , making apps like blueman unnecessary |
@bigbrovarwe are saying the same thing, its not a secret that Hollywood dont always get their facts right when it comes to settings outside of the western world. most hollywood movies are a general reflection of attitude in the west about Africa and the rest of the developing world. an average american doesnt know the different between Nigeria or Ghana , Many even think that Africa is a country. They are completely ignorant, and that ignorance always bear fruit in their movies. This is a known fact that will continue to happen. because the target audience of the movies dont really care about Lagos or Diamonds or southafrica , so lets not loss sleep of this , its not like our home videos is any better |
flyuche:Hunn the wonders of network manager 7, FYI you can also share the internet connection from the card wirelessly to other wireless computers or device around you. btw how fast is the speed of your starcoms? |
flyuche:you have to learn more about packaging systems although you are right mint version of synaptic is quite different from that of ubuntu but they are essentially the same echo ' deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/openoffice-pkgs/ubuntu intrepid main' | sudo tee -a /etc/apt/sources.list ; sudo aptitude update ; sudo aptitude full-upgrade run that in terminal see why sometimes commandline is better than GUI? |
lynxnoon:you might want to read this http://linuxowns./2008/06/16/guide-to-customizing-ubuntus-look-and-feel/ |
esquire:esquire try gnome do , which is what is being used here https://farm4.static.flickr.com/3327/3431268821_4518a4e8ed_d.jpg it beats every dock system on any platform you can think of , even mac , its comes with an awe search feature which has really cool plugin , i can start a chat session with anybody in my buddy list in pidgin just by typing the persons name , words cant describe its awesomeness . although to get the best from do you have to be running the latest version from their PPA the one in the ubuntu repository is quite old https://launchpad.net/~do-core/+archive/ppa |

flyuche:to install most applications on linux its better to use the package manager system. this is one area linux differs from windows. there is a guide there that will show you how to add a third party repository that contains the latest how to install the latest openoffice on ubuntu intrepid ibex/ mint felicia http://news.softpedia.com/news/How-To-Install-OpenOffice-org-3-0-in-Ubuntu-8-10-96449.shtml |
krazynaija:my guess is that you have a hardware problem. and you have to be very stern with the poeple you got this netbook from. demand a permenent fix to the problem, a new laptop or your money back. please don't settle for less. abunwanne:Things like this pisses me off . this place is a free support forum. if you cant provide help for free then dont spam this board. |
I dont really know the guy (since i hardly watch nigerian movies) but i kinda like him from his interview he seem sincere and hit the nail on the head of what is wrong with the nigerian movie industry |
Lets not get worked up over Hollywood and their guffs. Its a non fact that only always never gets their facts wrong when it comes to movie sets and background Many Indians never liked the way The SlumDog Millionaire Portrayed poverty in India in line with western stereo types, even the slum dweller protested the name of the movie claming they are not dogs. In the Movie 300 The Iranian government protested the way the Persian nation was portrayed as a fetish, immoral, and oppressors while the Greeks were portrayed as morally upright, freedom lovers, and strong, when in actual fact the greek kept slaves too were just as brutal to their slaves as everyone was at the time. many people who watched the 300 movie didn't know that the Persian king is the same dude that married Esther in the bible they are very few Hollywood movies that doesn't guff when it comes to background facts to their movies , its just a reflection of western stereotypes and how little Americans know about the outside world. also while this is bad, i think our local home video is just as guilty. Especially when they try to portray setting in Europe or cast a Lebanese as an American. or the fake accent of an act who is suppose to have lived all his life in the US. heck its just a movie mehn dont get all worked up about it. even the xmen movie is a complete fail compared to the comic , |

baani:its actually bigbrovar , bigrovar was a mistake i made when registering for nairaland baani:if you stay in lagos i could hook u up with a guy who could get you a copy of the older release (ubuntu 8.04 hardy heron and ubuntu 8.10 intrepid ibex) am not sure about the jaunty but you could ask the ubuntu nigeria mailing list http://groups.google.com/group/ubuntunigeria am sure someone there could help, about the ship-it , i have gotten every ubuntu i requested delivered to my door step when i was in Lagos and Abuja and it took like a month roughly |
lynxnoon:my bad i made a mistake in the commands, it should be sudo aptitude update;sudo aptitude install bluemanor you could just go through synaptic , reload and search for and install blueman , |
as a desktop nope. the only freebsd i run is freeNAS which i use as my file-server . however i would like to think i have some experience with using dialup with linux generally although alot would depend on the hardware support of your modem. so what modem are u running i might just have the wvdial.conf for it |
blackweaver:#slax, package dependencies i have never used slaz before the closest i came was when i installed zenwalk which is suppose to have some relationship with slax. anyway i dont really have a problem with package management both apt-get and pacman tend to do a good work of dealing with it. #codec, internet, true its one of the biggest challenge of using linux in nigeria. lack of internet connection means people are on able to take advantage of the benefit of package managers. how ever one of the thing am tryin to do is an offline package stript which would contain all the needed codecs and you can just use the script to install them offline. |
