which is what i was trying to tell you guys way back when sad. Mugabe's senility is masquerading itself as some self styled pan africanism.

Still, much respect to you for calling it as you see it.

Is it just me or do you guys think Dwight Howard is lazy? i mean that last play. The ball was meant for him and he allowed evans to steal the ball.
yup, he is lazy. i have to give it to shaq. He saw what DH was all about about 5 years ago. When Shaq was ragging on him, I thought it was just jealousy. We (houston fans) got fooled by his athleticism and flashes of greatness. DH will always be average, because his mindset is average. It pains me to see talented people not have the work ethic.

I am igbo. I don't support biafra. At least not now. You can ask me why. But I support a genuine and legal choice of group to rule themselves.
I think most Nigerians would agree with this line of thinking.

Nnamdi Kanu does not speak for Ndigbo. I condemn his hate speeches.

The problem here is the insults 99% of igbos like me with no support whatsoever for biafra are subjected to because most people here believe we're all in on the statement of a man whom the OHANEZE Ndigbo has renounced.
The insults are flying both ways. Once you realize the average age of nairalanders, you tend to start laughing at the insults instead of taking them serious. To be sure, it makes it harder to read up on nairaland.

I expect you people to be wise enough to know that the the leaders in South-East would champion the course if it was the desire of a greater majority. Which is how it is supposed to be as seen in other similar agitation worldwide.

I can assure you NK was unknown to most igbos til radio biafra started broadcasting.

NK does not represent the hard working igbos in Nigeria.
The belief online that igbos hates other tribes does not tally with what goes on reality.

Stop the generalisations.

I just wanted to clarify this misconception and I hope the wisdom of Solomon is not a requirement to understand it.
Hmm ok. Still, the silence of the Igbo elite in this matters is deafening. Wether it is present and past governors, Soludo, Ezekwesili, Iweala etc, everyone went underground when Kanu started broadcasting. If Kanu is a one man show, why are outspoken Igbo elite suddenly keeping on the down low.

I think the truth is Biafra carries more passion in the east than people in other parts of Nigeria realize. I would prefer a loose regional Nigeria with semi-autonomous parts, but I suspect in the end, this Biafra issue will not go away even then. Kanu may have spoken crudely, but I believe the bulk of his ideas (minus the violence) reflect the mood of the majority. My hope is, if that day comes, it is in the spirit of pan africanism

It's true that any private borrowers who have foreign loans will struggle to pay back their debts under a devalued currency, but we have to balance this fact against the reality that a cheaper Naira also means Nigerian businesses will be more competitive on international markets, while Nigerian assets begin to look a lot more tempting for foreign investors.

People may say that Nigeria currently doesn't have much by way of exports to benefit from a weaker currency, but if we're ever going to emulate the Bangalore or Shenzhen models, unit labor costs will be a crucial component of the draw for foreign direct investment. China's labor force is both aging rapidly and becoming expensive, and the Chinese manufacturers are already looking for new places to set up shop now that their domestic workers are starting to prefer better paid work, and nowhere in Nigeria is in a better position to benefit from this than the SW, but an overvalued Naira that can't be freely sold for dollars negates the advantages we have.

Truth be told, while I think it's important to root out corruption going forward, to ease the cost of doing business and encourage foreign investment, I don't really think any oil money stolen during the Jonathan era is that important, especially when compared to the scale of FDI that we need to attract to attain Asian tiger level growth rates. That's why I think Buhari's seeming obsession with corruption to the exclusion of all else is misplaced - there are more important systemic issues that need fixing (and Fashola is saying all the right things about fixing some of them).
Spot on. I agree with your analysis, especially that the FDI needed is much more significant than recovered loot. However, corruption is multi-headed in the Nigerian case. The corruption wielded by the Dasuki types is nation destroying - I can understand Buhari's obsession with pruning that as quick as possible. I would not underestimate the capacity of nigerian politicians to fund small private armies. I hope once that is out of the way, let EFCC do its job and not try to throw the baby out with the bathwater just to catch a few thieves.

I agree that Buhari's 5,000 Naira pledge was a reckless pledge that will be difficult to remove if it ever becomes unaffordable. I suspect that when he made the pledge, he wasn't really expecting that he'd win the election and actually have to honor his promises. That's the only way it makes sense to me.\
Fog of war tinz grin. The outcome was not very sure at the beginning of 2015. I still remember thesilent tension that gripped the country then.

As politically unappealing as these policies might seem, we Yorubas would potentially be their greatest beneficiaries, just as we benefited the most from telecoms deregulation. The SW could be the first part of black Africa to climb onto the industrialization path that the East Asian countries laid out, but first we have to get rid of populist policies that have strongly discourage investment and growth.
I am looking forward to the VP making good on his promises with regards to liberalizing the economy, making it a snap to start businesses etc. If they can do this, I think the amount of wealth creation, especially in the SW will be astounding.

Are you a Hayek fan, or is that just a coincidence.

He suggested that Buhari

(1) stop trying to defend an artificial rate for the Naira and let the market set its value, instead of squandering precious foreign reserves while imposing arbitrary restrictions on imports (harming manufacturers).
The issue here is that Nigeria unwisely borrowed during GEJ's term. Letting Naira just rise means we will never be able to pay that debt back, because we borrowed in dollars. The money controls are also keeping bigwigs from laundering stolen cash out of the country, even as it is affecting the common man. Im not suggesting either Sanusi or CBN is right...just that there are more variables that make this far from being simplistic. Buhari's current policy IMO is betting that a low level of indebtedness and recovered loot is a better way to go. Im not necessarily a fan of this, but I see the logic.

(2) abolish the fuel subsidy and completely deregulate oil refining and distribution. That money could be spent on much more important things, like infrastructure, education and health. The same point has been made by Kachikwu (who you'd think Buhari would hear out, as NNPC head) and now even the World Bank.
You see how much flak GEJ took for trying to remove even a portion of the subsidy? The economic and political pain may just be too much for a country already trying to stabilize. Btw, this is why I am against the #5000 nonsense for youths. Once you start giving freeebies, it is very hard to stop it...stopping subsidy is common sense, but unfortunately the economy is now built to expect it. If you remove it, you WILL wipe out most small businesses. And the last thing you need is another political fight while biafra, bh, corruption are going on

If you look at the ECB, Bank of Japan and Fed Reserve, one thing we know for sure is that no one completely knows how to solve economic crises. I would give Buhari the benefit of the doubt here. There are variables that are not obvious to economists that are very obvious to the executive in charge.

I should add that one of the things which set Awolowo's Action Group above competitors like Zik's NCNC - apart from Awolowo's superior organizational skills - was precisely the clear vision Awo and company put forward as to where they wanted to go, and how they intended to get there once in office. What worries me about Buhari is that he doesn't seem to have any vision for Nigeria beyond stamping out corruption, but while that is a laudable aim, even if he were to magically eliminate all corruption in Nigeria tomorrow, that would not be enough to get the country on a high-growth path. It's not as if Buhari hasn't already been receiving sensible economic advice from the likes of Sanusi Lamido, Kachikwu and many others on deregulating the economy, but he hasn't shown any sign of listening, and I'm not hopeful that Buhari will behave any differently if Fashola tells him things about private investment that Buhari doesn't want to hear.
What advice did he get from SLS that wasnt followed? I think Buhari would agree with you more than you realize. To me, the time he took to get an "all star" team of ministers tells me that he understands his position. He is not going to come out with any ground breaking scheme that will revive this economy. I think he is hoping Fashola et al can do that. This leaves him free to concentrate on corruption - I think this battle by itself will use up most of his time. It is already becoming obvious that IPOB was a plot to destabilize the new government. Lets see what other cards PDP et al have to play

Thanks, that's just what I feared. I get what you're saying about Tinubu, but as you note, the man doesn't exactly have the purest reputation, and when I look at him, or faux-populists like Fayose with his "government by photo op", it makes me all the more reluctant to get personally involved in the rough and tumble of Nigerian politics.
If you intend on getting into anything political, this is the nature of the beast. You think Awo held leadership of the Yoruba by being a saint? Do you know the kind of deals Fashola pulled with the real owners of Lagos in order to get free reign on his agenda. There is only one way to do politics

What I would most like to do is help draw up a plan for action or manifesto which could be used to exert pressure on the Yoruba political class to do more than just engaging in phony "man of the people" nonsense or starting up random infrastructure projects with no vision of how they will be maintained in the long term. Having studied the history of economic development of the likes of Japan, South Korea, Taiwan and now China, I see no reason why the same kind of takeoff couldn't happen in Yorubaland, but that requires a level of vision that I haven't seen from any politicians other than Fashola, Fayemi and (to some extent) Tinubu.
Success has a pressure all of its own. If you get really good at what you do, money will come, and with that influence. You wont have to buy a seat at the table. You will be invited.

You should be warned though, as they say, Nigeria's enemies have enemies. I think you may get to the top and realize the problme is not what you thought the problem was. See MKO undecided

It's been quite interesting reading through all of the 373 pages of this discussion, and I appreciate seeing so much passion on here to do something to better the condition of our people. My problem, as a child of Oduduwa in the diaspora, is that I just don't see any means of contributing or participating that doesn't require involvement in organizations that have been tainted by the same old politicians. Where are the unaffiliated sociocultural groupings like original Egbe Omo Oduduwa? I'm sure that there are many professionals in and outside Nigeria who would be interested in joining in such groups as a means of contributing their skills and insights, but all I've been able to find are groupings centered on particular towns and regions of Yorubaland.

In any case, I hope that whatever arguments might have occurred recently in this thread do not lead to it petering out ...
To answer the bolded, there is no such organization. If you do decide to get involved, and you should, be ready to roll up your sleeves as you will run into unprogressive elements with different agenda. As much as I would not like to recommend him, you should study Tinubu very well, the man is wise even if his character is not angelic. Remember, he was a returnee too at one point

Agreed. Even at the YMCA with crazy lights out shooters, I have never seen the ball drop that way consistently. I have to think Curry has found a way to enter the shooter's zone and never come out of it. In order words, its a mind game for him now. Any 3 pt shot with the slightest daylight has a good chance of going in. Nigerian basketball is characterized by government negligence, we have lots of youth wasting on the streets, not everyone can become a footballer.. Basketball could be set up properly, it would engage our youths meaningfully and even aid in job creation.
We seriously lack public basketball courts in nigeria, you only find public courts in very big schools or stadiums and millitary bases. And these locations are unaccessible to people far from this locations.
Am not much of a basketballer only because i could not find courts to play nearby. In lagos, i have to spend almost a thousand naira on transport in order to get to the closest basketball court to and fro.
Please yaba and surulere is too far for some of us, establish public courts in all the local government areas.

I stay around iju ishaga, if you know any public or private court around, please let me know.
How many basketball threads are here on nairaland sef? I only know of one bball court in my neck of the woods in Lagos. And its owned by one of those staff clubs. Unless Chelsea stops existing tomorrow, football is the only game in town. Colonial influence is stronger than we would like to think. If you are waiting for govt that cant pay last months salary to build you bball courts, hehehehe...dey wait dia

The only hope is the same thing that brought the entertainment industry to where it is..you have to help yourself (as with everything else in Nigeria undecided)

you are a rockets fan? how do you feel about harden playing zero defense? howard? mchale getting ousted? that team is dysfunctional man
Cant tell you how disappointed I am. Coach got canned even though it really wasnt his fault. Harden just decided he was going to ease into the season, and his effort rubbed off on the team. Howard is not a leader either, and definitely not a franchise player. The fact that these two dont have that "go get it" personality doomed us.

But you know, I have to blame McHale for this. Remember last playoffs when we came from 3-1 to beat the clips? We won the pivotal game 5 because McHale benched Harden and played the hungry guys...Jason Terry, Brewer, Ariza, J Smoove, Capella. Fast forward to the last game against the Waririors in the WCF. Harden was mentally unprepared, turning the ball over and looking lost. Yet McHale did not take him out. I believe this sent a strong message to the team - its ok to be sloppy if you are the superstar. That message carried over into this season. I also think its the reason Josh left.

Frankly, I have given hope on this team for this season. Until we get a true leader, we will continue to dissapoint. Ty Lawson is not it. He's more of a buddy to Harden than an inspiration to the team. I think Harden or Howard needs to go.

I always imagined Kobe's career ending with an in game injury in the middle of a tightly contested playoff game. Didnt quite go down that way, but still a good ride. Hats off to the black mamba.
