Backfilling work done today. 3 trips of 20tons sharp sand gulped already.

Can you please explain the reason why you're using sharp sand instead of laterite sand, in wet land area. Is there any proving science to this method.

Using either sharp sand or laterite to backfill is based on several factors which are not just limited to the properties of the backfill material.

Sharp sand is coarse, compacts well, has low moisture retention and does not sink if it's well compacted with water.

Laterite elasticity nature makes it contract and expand based on weather and prevailing conditions, except you want to leave it for a while for it to compact well.

Cost, affordability, availability, structural engineer recommendation are also factors that will determine what will be used as backfill material.

We couldn't get to site yesterday due to the accident on Kara bridge after Berger, I was in the traffic buildup for 5 hours before I gave up and went back home.

However, my site supervisor was able to make it and they have started with the foundation backfilling. We are using sharp sand to fill and will need between 8-9 trips of 20tons truck.

We stopped drilling at 15m and put in the pipes and the submersible pump. We can use the water now for construction purpose but the client will invest in a mini water treatment system once the building is completed.

More formwork removal pictures.

We are back to site after leaving the raft to cure for a week. We are removing the formwork and will start with the backfilling simultaneously while allowing the raft to continue curing.

We are going to backfill with sharp sand and after watering and ramming it down, we will lay damp proof membrane on it and cover that with blinding before we start the reinforcement work.

Reinforcement for columns being fixed. We are using 16mm rebars and 10mm for the rings. External bracing is being done using 2x3 woods.

Iron reinforcement has been dropped into the formwork and the external and internal bracing is ongoing. We have also sprayer the internal part of the formwork with disused engine oil to make removing the formwork easy after casting.

Work in progress, we are planning to cast on Monday.

How many blocks per cement bag is good for 6 and 9 inches hollow blocks? Thanks.

Oga Hajj, long time no see.

For 9" blocks, between 25-30 is good, though you can stretch it to 35 if your budget is tight.

For 6" blocks, between 30-35 is good, you can also stretch it to 40 based on your personal discretion.

The standards are there to adhere to but personal decision superceed, but let's try and be safe even when we are on a tight budget.

What is the fee per bag?

N900 per bag and they can do between 10 - 15 bags per day based on how many they produce per bag. I will need to give them at least 2 weeks notice in advance because they are always busy and on sites.

I've noticed that you have quitested a few projects in Ikorodu. Do you know any block moulder in Agbowa? I'm looking to have blocks made on site.

I don't have not know any block moulder in Agbowa but I'll help you make inquiry. The other option is I have a team of moulder's I can bring in from outside Lagos that all they do is contract block moulding, you buy all the material and pay them for moulding per bag of cement and wetting the blocks. You decide how many blocks you want moulded per bag of cement.

We started work on the water borehole too, so we can have a steady supply of water and not spend so much on buying water from tankers more so when the site is still inaccessible by vehicles.

We got to five strata of sand before we stopped drilling at a depth of 15m plus. The installer warned that if we go any further we risked getting water with a lot of iron content.

We are done with the internal carpentry formwork (raft boarding) and will be starting with the external boarding today and after that the overall bracing.

Reinforcement work is also ongoing and we ate almost done with the internal rebars work.

It is sincerely not feasible to project #5million for this project. You will definitely overrun your budget and your Client needs to be aware from the onset. You can as well do an appraisal on this.. .

Thank you for the constructive criticism, it helps sometimes to bring things into perspective.

It's a budget I made for the client based on his requirements for building (location, carcass, finishing and external works) and since the client is in charge of procuring materials am sure he will be on top of his games in terms of maximizing savings.

More so, the budget was made in January/February when Nigeria was still sane (and cement was still N1450-N1650) and we have both adjusted to the reality on ground. Building material cost have shot up and makes the budget no longer feasible.

We will do a review of the budget as advised and possibly post online if the client is okay with it or give a ballpark figure at the end of the project.

Iron reinforcement work ongoing. We are using 16mm, 12mm and 10mm rebars. The ring spacing is @250cc and the height is 1.2m.

Carpentry formwork has started and we will be rounding up soon. We are using 4 planks giving us a cumulative height of 1.2m (4ft).

We will be raising the perimeter wall also to about 4-5 coaches all round. We already have 2 sides of the perimeter wall raised up to 5 coaches.

We are back to site on the 31st of October 2016 after a hiatus of about 5 months.

Backfilling has been concluded and we are about to commence with the German floor and blockwork.

It's just finished pouring cats and dogs on site and all the trenches are flooded so we have to pump it out before we can commence with work again.

We have started with the carpentary formwork for the raft. We are using 12x1ft plank and 2x3 wood for batting and bracing.

Recommendation from the structural engineer is to excavate to a depth of 300mm and the total raft height is 1.2m which is what we have observed.

We started the blinding and had to be pumping out water and blinding simultaneously as the ground water kept oozing out and filling the trenches.
