EducationRe: Don’t Name UNN After Ojukwu, Alumni Warn FG by blacklion(m): 12:15pm On Dec 15, 2011
Pls this thread is about maintaining the name of UNN and finding other ways to honour Ojukwu.

Lets not allow it to be derailed by personal egotism.

Pukkah:
Are we now to look for an institution or something that Ojukwu founded or started?  Is that usually the rule in naming public places after deserving individuals?
I think the key issue is to respect the wishes of the founder of the university i.e. Zik, that the university keep the name UNN in perpetuity.

I think the key issue is to respect the wishes of the founder of the university i.e. Zik, that the university keep the name UNN in perpetuity.

Zik and Ojukwu are two separate individuals.

Both made distinct contributions to Nigeria and to Igboland.

Re-naming an institution founded by Zik after Ojukwu is a gross disrespect to both of their memories.
EducationRe: Don’t Name UNN After Ojukwu, Alumni Warn FG by blacklion(m): 10:56am On Dec 15, 2011
University of Nigeria was established in 1960 by Zik based on his Pan-Africanist and humanist vision, hence its motto 'To Restore the Dignity of Man'. The institution was primarily funded from the Eastern Nigeria treasury but Zik deliberately named it 'University of Nigeria'. The name was a deliberate choice and not a mistake.

Zik's dream was a new type of university institution in Africa. He attempted to pioneer US-style higher education at Nsukka in order to give Nigeria and Africa a new beginning on a separate path from British colonialism, despite fierce resistance from the British stooges ruling Nigeria at the time. After the civil war, the FGN forcefully imposed the British university system on UNN and in 1975, the university was seized and hijacked by the FGN.

Zik could have given the institution any other name or named it after himself but he deliberately did not. All through his lifetime, Zik vigorously resisted all and any attempts to change the name of the university supposedly in his honour by the FGN.

Zik is Zik, Ojukwu is Ojukwu.

Zik of Africa and Ojukwu, the Biafran hero.

The name UNN should be preserved as Zik always wanted. This is in deference to his preferred and expressed wishes and in honour to Zik's intellectual and political ideals.

There are so many other institutions and locations in Igboland or Nigeria that could be named after Ojukwu.

The airports can be privatized. I'm sure they'll be profitable handling maybe 3-4 flights a week with 25-40 seater turbo-prop planes. There are hundreds of regional and local airports in the US and Europe serviced by smaller turbo-prop and propeller aircraft. Not every airport in Nigeria has to be serviced by 120 seater jets.

Well said! And there are even cases where the SIL did not live with the couple yet the hubby still managed to bang the SIL or even knock her up.

The real question is - does OP trust her hubby with her sister and vice versa, does she trust her sister with her hubby?
I honestly had no idea arik ran daily flights from lagos to enugu!! Thanks for the heads up!

Anyways, all I'm saying is that we need to take more than just sentimental reasons into account when stating our case for Enugu Airport. Coas apart from lagos, only abuja with about 3 international flights (daily) and P.H (with 2) are actually working!!
Its not just Arik that operates Lagos-Enugu flights. Aero and Air Nigeria also operate flights on Lagos-Enugu route.

At least one-third and possibly up to half of the international passenger traffic through Lagos airport alone actually originates and terminates in the East. That traffic is more than enough to sustain direct flights to international airports at Enugu and Owerri especially from certain routes - Dubai/Guangzhou/Far East as well as Houston, Chicago and Atlanta. Those are not sentimental considerations.

A daily Emirates flight with Boeing 777 from Enugu to Dubai or Guangzhou will be over-booked 24/7/365. Have you ever witnessed the arrival of Emirates or Qatar Airways flight at MMA? What language did you hear most in the arrivals hall or at the luggage carousel? This is not a sentimental consideration.

A Delta Airlines flight Houston-Enugu 2 or 3 times a week will equally be overbooked. The sheer size of the Igbo community in Texas alone is not a sentimental consideration by any means.
FamilyRe: Marriage Issues- Concerns by blacklion(m): 10:24am On Dec 08, 2011
Unlike Europe where the heir apparent is known from birth due to the primogeniture system (first born son or child inherits the crown), in most of Africa, the successor to the throne is not known until the monarch dies and the ruling family/house selects the replacement from its eligible princes.

So the young lady cannot possibly know now whether her BF is likely or not to succeed his dad as oba eventually.

Whatever decision she makes now has to be with that consideration in mind - she may eventually find herself as an Oba's wife at very short or no notice.
if humann traffic where so plenty on international routes, most airlines would be running two flights daily out of here or you would have multiple airlines flying the same route.

lets be logical in our discussion please, according to ezeagu, easterners make up the bulk of passengers on certain routes and I find that quite interesting to note, I had no idea, Yet there are no daily local flights out of these eastern airports, That's rather hard to swallow, Just sayin
Emirates operates 2 daily flights Lagos-Dubai and is seeking to expand to Abuja soon. At least half of the passengers on the Emirates flights began their journey in the East and are returning to the East. About 50-60% are going to Dubai while the rest are connecting in Dubai to Guangzhou, Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur and other Far East destinations.

Most of the passengers on Qatar Airways, Kenyan Airways, Ethiopian Airlines and Egyptair are actually travelling to Dubai and the Far East - at least half of those originated their journey in the East. People going to Dubai use these airlines because they are usually $200-300 cheaper than Emirates direct flight if you don't mind waiting a few hours in transit at Doha, Nairobi, Addis or Cairo. From Jan 2012, Royal Jordanian Airlines will operate Lagos-Amman; again, this is basically a Dubai/Far East flight. Its said that Etihad will start operating Lagos-Abu Dhabi next year also. There is also China Southern Airlines operating Lagos-Beijing.

As for local flights to Enugu -

Aero, Arik and Air Nigeria operate Lagos-Enugu flights daily.

Aero and Arik operate operate Abuja-Enugu flights daily.

PoliticsRe: Thoughts On Delayed Enugu Int'l Airport "take Off" by blacklion(m): 6:42pm On Dec 07, 2011
BA and KLM flights from Europe to Enugu would not be economically optimal. Passengers on UK/Europe routes are mostly Yoruba, Edo/Delta plus some Hausa/Middle Belt. But Delta flights from Houston, Atlanta or Chicago to Enugu would be very profitable due to the large Igbo diaspora communities in those locations.

Likewise, Emirates, Qatar Airways, China Southern to Enugu would be economically profitable to due to the high volume of Igbo business people travelling to and from Dubai and the Far East.

Let the requisite facilities plus govt agencies [customs, immigration etc] be installed to make Enugu an int airport first and then we'll see if the airlines will ignore the profit opportunities.
PoliticsRe: Thoughts On Delayed Enugu Int'l Airport "take Off" by blacklion(m): 5:49pm On Dec 07, 2011
, can Enugu Airport boast of daily passenger traffic, enough to fill a boeing 737 to any destination?! If yes! then please! Im all for it, if not then I'm sorry, this case would be difficult to plead. Just saying!
At least one-third and possibly up to half of the passengers on certain routes through Lagos airport originated their journeys from the East and are returning to the East. Have you ever been at MMA in the mid-afternoon when the Emirates, Qatar Airways and Egyptair flights come in? 50% of the passengers are actually Igbo business people returning from Dubai and the Far East; many of them will connect that same day via flight or night bus to the East. Direct flights from Enugu to the Far East via Dubai or Doha will easily fill a Boeing 777 or Airbus 340 daily.

An international airport in Enugu will serve the business community in Onitsha as well as Enugu, Ebonyi and Anambra states generally. Despite its proximity to Aba, Owerri and Umuahia, PH airport is not necessarily optimal for business people in those areas due to the bad conditions and insecurity on the roads to PH airport.

Evil Brain:
Why stop at that? We should have nothing less than the full implementation of Sharia law all over Nigeria as well as the inclusion of all the old-testament laws in our criminal/penal code. Now that Nigeria is no longer a secular country, let us all live our lives by the laws of stone age, preindustrial societies because things were much better then.

We should start stoning unwed mothers and disobedient children to death. We should jail people who wear cotton/polyester shirts and women who dare open their mouths in church. Any girl who doesn't bleed on her wedding night, regardless of whether she is a virgin or not, should be killed in front of her father's house. All räpe victims in urban areas should be killed. Sani Yerima should be appointed as president, commander-in-chief, high priest/general overseer, and caliph.

If we do all these, then god will bless us and Nigeria will finally become a wealthy, first world, industrialized nation just like Finland, Germany and the US.

In a University for that matter!

You don't get 'expelled' for bad academic performance in Nigerian universities but you can be 'asked to withdraw' if your grades are consistently rock bottom.
