The proposal makes sense but Buhari and most Nigerians are protectionist at heart. We import fish without an issue but these businesses need protection in their mind. The NASS could intervene but it needs veto proof majority if it requires law change.
I dont think it would end all the violence or herding but it would greatly reduce it. I say this because other neighboring countries dont have frozen beef bans. The other big issue is the police are inept. Nigerians dont even consume that much beef per capita yet they get killed over it. Why stop at beef why not go down the list?
Notice you're allowed to import live cows but not beef. The competition from Americans and Brazilians would make them chage their business practices.
freshMallam1122: u AR wrong too.. meet Shehu sani.. he updated it.. not u
Wrong again Shehu Sani didn't do anything. All this data is provided by NBS. They keep track if this economic data. I didnt say I updated it. I said you screenshoted my comment which you did. Anyway your points are either old or wrong.
freshMallam1122: oga sir cross river generate more tax than akwa ibom.. so the little generated in akwa-ibom is just from the toothpicks factory that's all.. the syringe company is a private public enterprise.. even the ibom air... so just believe me PDP an Udom is a scarmer
You're wrong about tax generated and you screenshoted my comment explaining different subject.
This is a pointless ultimatum that will go ignored. If they want to effect change they should lobby the state assemblies to make laws on this issue. Do we wait for Buhari to conduct elections at his leisure? The state simply need to copy national laws or improve upon it.
phransix2: The way Akwa Ibom surpassed Cross River in terms of infrastructural development baffles me... Donald Duke was doing a good job while Arc. Victor Attah was then sleeping but when they passed batons to Imoke and Akpabio respectively. a true uncommon transformation took place in Akwa Ibom leaving Cross River as just the cleanest state in the south.
Why would it surprise you when Akwa Ibom state with double the GDP surpases Cross River? There's obvious reasons why this even was inevitable.
Yawn dont Nigerians get tired of chest beating. It's really sad at this point. Im all for borders security and enforcing immigration laws but enough saber rattling.
grandstar: Let's be frank, these fines are excessive and they mirror the incompetence of the traffic officials in carrying out their tasks.
If those who are to uphold traffic laws break it with impunity, how then can they oversee its implemention?
The traffic officials don't care much about traffic laws but are out to extort traffic offenders. Their prime interest is shaking down vulnerable motorists rather than ensuring that traffic laws are followed.
In countries where motorist obey traffic laws, the traffic officials are passionate about the law and their jobs and punishment isn't selective. If these same attitudes were in our officials here, there wouldn't be need for these exhorbitant fines which are simply used to frighten offending motorists into paying them large bribes to get off the hook.
Simple they need traffic quotas. If they're corrupt prosecute them. You just need to make sn example of a few people before the rest of the masses fall in line.
EVarn: I respect that you have a very vivid imagination,a skill that would definitely come in handy if you were to venture into the movie industry.
Let me reiterate that I never said Nigeria instituted the case,I said Nigeria shouldn't have agreed to be a party to the case. In case you don't know,it isn't mandatory to appear before the ICJ for a case, a country can choose to dismiss such charges or pull out of the court at any time.
A good evening to you too.
I half agree with you. Nigeria was under no obligation to subject its sovereignty to the court. Cameroon did initiate case as wikipedia says. Relinquishing our sovereignty over this was a weak move by Nigeria. Im just assuming they didnt want war with france backing its Cameroon.
Who knows if Nigeria wouldn't have xome out stronger after a war. At least they would have to take security architecture seriously. If they dont it would have been crushing loss.
Why did Black Rino and Dangote group decided to pull out? The last update was Kano signing a bulk electricity purchase agreement with them. Oh well good for Mobil. I wish Akwa Ibom either made same deal as Kano did or went ahead to upgrade state owned power plant.
Mobil Producing Nigeria, operator of NNPC, MPN Joint Venture, on Thursday said it had reached commercial terms with Qua Iboe Power Plant Limited for the transfer of ownership of the Qua Iboe power project.
The General Manager, Public and Government Affairs, Mr Paul Arinze, in a statement said the agreement included the supply of gas from the NNPC/MPN joint venture offshore facilities to the power plant.
QIPPL is a joint venture between Black Rhino, a wholly owned subsidiary of Blackstone Group, and NNPC.
“The transfer includes the ownership and financing of a gas-fired power plant and a 58-kilometre transmission line.
“The NNPC/MPN joint venture will retain its responsibility to fund and build the 53-kilometre offshore pipeline and platform modifications needed to supply gas to the power plant,” he said.
He quoted Mr Paul McGrath, Chairman and Managing Director of MPN, as saying that “this milestone is a key enabler for the project, which will contribute 540 megawatts to the national grid when completed.
“This further demonstrates our commitment to support the Nigerian government’s priority of providing electricity to the country and maximizing the economic and social benefits of a reformed power sector.
“We have partnered with a uniquely qualified participant that has demonstrated a strong interest in ensuring the success of the Qua Iboe power project.
“All stakeholders are continuing to work expeditiously to conclude the necessary agreements for a final investment decision”.
Arinze said the Group Managing Director of NNPC, Dr Maikanti Baru, expressed satisfaction with the development.
“The NNPC is pleased that we have hit this major milestone on the road towards the realisation of the government’s power generation objectives.
“We will continue to work with MPN, QIPPL, Black Rhino and other stakeholders to ensure a successful and timely execution of the project,” Baru said.
Mobil has operated in Akwa Ibom for more than 50 years and remains committed to delivering sustainable and long-term benefits to the communities and government of the state.
“For example, you operate a hotel and you have a Nigerien or Canadian staying there for 90 days, it is your duty to ask him if he has registered. I am not talking about only hotels; even if it is a factory. We have got the equipment and we are training officers.
Babandede mentioned businesses are supposed ask and report migrants staying over 90 days but didn't mention any punishment for breaking rule. If its not a heavy fine or jail who cares. The other issue is migrants like herdsmen to register since the FG doesn't seem interested in regulating their activities.
The government so far judging by media reports only deported 1000 people max. The lasted deportations publicized was 4 Ghanians. He should be able to break a record if he's serious about getting rid of people.
They have their work cut out for them. This issue has been ignored way too long. It only matters to anyone during elections when they remember illegal immigrants voting or when they're commiting crimes. I dont know if there's an official estimate on how many illegal immigrants are residing in the country.
I'll file a foia to see how many immigrants have been deported over the years by each administration.
The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) will commence issuance of residence permits to foreign nationals in the next three months as it moves to expel millions of illegal immigrants living in the country.
Comptroller-General of Immigration, Muhammad Babandede, disclosed this during the passing out ceremony of the 44th Superintendent Basic Course for 396 trained officers from the Immigration Training School, Kano.
According to him: “In the next three months, the Service would commence issuance of Residence Permits to Foreign Nationals resident in the country and anybody who failed to possess his own before the expiration of the stipulated time faces deportation.
“In the face of serious insecurity facing the country, the only option left for the service is the issuance of Permits for all Foreign Nationals living in the country.
“In the face of global reality coupled with the insurgency and other serious security threats, Nigeria must take all necessary steps in protecting its sovereignty for the citizens to go about their lawful businesses in peace.”
Babandede noted the Service has taken serious steps in ensuring “our borders are protected and Nigeria becomes safer for business and encourage the inflow of foreign direct investments without undermining national security.”
He said they have so far trained 611 officers in Modern Border Management in Kano alone, adding the Service is training another batch of 1000 officers, The Nation reports
The Immigration boss also stated that the Federal Government has approved the establishment of e-border with the upgrade of passenger clearance system, installation of MIDAS, establishment of the border patrol to FOB and the ongoing Technology Building.
Commandant of the Kano Immigration School, CIS Rasheed Segun Adegoke said the school has witnessed unprecedented capacity development of infrastructure and training of manpower.
He added that they have since reintroduced Field-Trip for Cadets in line with the new validated curriculum.
Lol this story will definitely get a sequel If you dont the remedy situation. You're going to end up having sex with her then come back singing these are my confessions like you're User.
Maslib: Believe me this particular news was under reported. Am from zamfara these was just a section of the mourning gatherings. Some farming villages of 4000 has been annihilated silently and fulani herdsmen were proudly saying Nigeria belongs to them in my village.
Is there reason the people aren't forming militias to kill them. I read a story from punch reporting villages are being extorted 20 million naira, have you witnessed same. If its true that's more than enough to fight back.
CanadaOrBust: IMO there is something quite mysterious about monetary system. Even though CBN was propping up the naira there was still this huge and constantly widening disparity between black market and official rates. Then all of a sudden it disappeared and has stayed so ever since. Since 2017 it has stayed at about 360=1 without any commensurate increase in money from CBN.
There was an increase in money. In 2017 they injected $15 billion then 36 billion in 2018. The black market probably reacted higher demand for dollars since the central bank made currency artificially low.
Buckubuck: Moreso, the CBN is battling currency inflation with this defence of the naira and doing nothing about price inflation. What this means is the elite are being fed forex since that's their market, while ordinary Nigerians are paying for it with price inflation. In the long term, the middle class simply collapse
Agreed it doesn't help the also maintain multiple exchange rates for their priority customers.
This is dumb they should just pay up. They should of planed this out before passing law. Can private sector operators get away with this behavior without prosecution? The government simply raise taxes and or cut expenses to accommodate minimum wage. They're just allergic to tough choices.
CanadaOrBust: U seem to know your stuff. Thanks 4 bringing that site to my awareness. It is a good site to know. Question still remains though: Since the naira loses so much value each year compared the dollar, why would anyone store money in naira
Thanks I try. I dont know answer to last question. I always assumed the banks offer high interest or they save in different currency.
CanadaOrBust: (BTW US inflation is at 1.9% according to Google) We are talking a difference of 9%. That’s 9% of trillions of dollars. How can $210 compensate for that? Also how come the black market also stays steady?!
It's about supplying enough forex to supplement demand. $210 million doesn't cover it. It was 36 billion last year. Heres an article about it.
The black market stays steady because of supply and demand. Its the same reason other currency dont values dont radically change day to day.
CanadaOrBust: My question is, if Naija inflation is 11% and US is 3%, what keeps the exchange rate steady at $1=N360?
CBN inject money to into Forex market to protect currency from devaluation. That money comes from foreign reserves Nigeria earns through exports from oil. Recently CBN injected 210 million dollars to defend naira.
Jinad50: With all due respect. From what I gathered, Gowon did not revoke the agreement, he only delayed it for what I believe to be political reason. Ojukwu became furious and inpatient, and decided to cease ties from Nigeria. That move is nothing, but an act of war. Well I am not say u are wrong and I am right or vice vasa. This only lay credence to my write-up that it will be difficult to teach this subject in schools.
You know there's already history books on the subject. I studied about the war in my AP World history class in highschool. Textbooks source their facts from sources I mentioned before. The figures from war are alive today and most of the documents should still be available assuming the aren't classified still.
There should also be historians in Nigerian universities all over country with peer reviewed papers. If you go to the college libraries or talk to department heads they can point you in right direction. Alot of professors are happy to discuss these topics during office hours.
