Border security solutions by CONNOR COLLINS:
• Incorporate a network of electronic detection systems, such as radars, ground based sensors, cameras, and drones in select regions.

• Invest in physical instrastructure, establishing checkpoints and forward operating bases in the remote regions.

• Increase military patrols in high threat regions, to demonstrate a consistant presence and control that spans the border region.

This topic ended up on front page months later. Again all I want to know is how much will the government chsrge for these services. The Bureau of Land Management in the United States charges to use service. You have get permit and pay lease.

I never see anyone asking these questions. The tax payer cant bankroll these businesses at all angles.

The both within proximity narrative does not seem a strong enough argument to me. Badagry port is of strategic importance to both local and regional corridor. It is supposed to be integrated into the Lagos - Benin-Togo-Ghana-Abijan super road-rail-ports network project to facilitate high volume commerce across these countries. If you are canceling because of quality of Port Master project, then by all means review the damn thing. A comparative analysis with other port considerations should ideally tell which one takes priority.

Then have the cost and time of arbitration been factored? Sometimes it is better to agree to modify the TOR, quality & other stuffs than arbitration....
It's odd to me as well considering it already made this far despite the bureaucracy. Assuming the port is getting rail like Buhari directed it can still serve its purpose in another state. I'll just have a wait an see attitude since I haven't read master plan. Im still looking for the link to it.

If this arbitration goes like the other nigeria loses and pays up. Those promoters and business men going to be livid if they bought land in preparation for project thst may not be in state.

People are saying they should build the port in Niger Delta but safety is going to be a great concern.

In my opinion, any private company who wants to build a port can do so, as long as consent has been given by the Nigerian government.
Thats a lazy excuse. How does government spend millions of dollars without planning to protect maritime domain? Nigeria has a big issue with piracy abd sea robbery that can be solved by increasing naval budget. Omproving equipment and strategy is key. Ibom seaport for instance is suppose to have naval base near by to protect the it.

Buhari could literally double it he got rid of corrupt security votes.

“If you look at the Badagry and the Lekki deep seaport projects, they are all within the Western ports.
If they're cancelling this over its proximity to lekki they can build another deep seaport in Ondo. That governor has been asking for this project forever. Hopefully they get better deal after renegotiating contract. Where is the port master plan?

We also have other proposals like the Ibom deep seaport and the Ibaka deep seaport.”
She sounds confused aren't same project under different names?
PoliticsNPA Cancels $2.6bn Badagry Deep Seaport Contract by Blue3k(op): 3:04pm On Jun 25, 2019
Hadiza Bala-Usman, Managing Director of the Nigeria Ports Authority, has said a new port master plan for the Badagry deep seaport project will determine if the port is viable enough to be constructed, considering the construction of another in Lekki. Both projects are in Lagos- within the Western corridor and the agency’s boss says it had halted the $2.6 billion project because the previous master plan was done poorly.

“If you look at the Badagry and the Lekki deep seaport projects, they are all within the Western ports. The port master plan will guide us on whether it is okay to have two deep seaports in close proximity to each other,” Punch quoted Bala-Usman as saying. She explained this as the reason for the cancellation of the contract.

“When I assumed office, I inherited a consultant that was supposed to do a Port Master Plan for the Badagry project, but the consultant did a very bad job. When we took the job to the consultant that did the project’s Terms Of Reference, our internal people looked at it and said it wasn’t good enough. Even the consultant that did the TOR confirmed that the job wasn’t properly done.

“So because of these issues, we cancelled the contract, and the project’s promoters took us to court. We are currently in arbitration. Now we are working on re-awarding the contract. I just gave the go-ahead for the engagement of another consultant that will do the Port Master Plan. The master plan will allow us to know where ports should be deployed in the country in-view of environmental issues, in view of commercial and financial liabilities.”

“So what we need to do now is to prioritize having those deep seaports that will have the required draft for larger vessels. Bala-Usman restated that the country’s ports are river sized in depth and can therefore not handle vessels that require a large draft. The Apapa port complex which handles 80 percent of Nigeria’s cargo is 14m in depth and today’s vessels require a depth of 17m.

“Our ports are river ports, and we need to move on to have deep seaports. In that area, we are working with Lekki deep seaport. We have signed the necessary papers, and they are in the process of completing their payment as regards their financing terms. They have built the breakwater. We are hoping that it will be a milestone achievement. We also have other proposals like the Ibom deep seaport and the Ibaka deep seaport.”

The Federal Government had earlier emphasized the establishment of deep seaports to decongest Apapa port. President Muhammadu Buhari also directed that all ports constructed in the future must have rail links to move cargoes by sea and avoid the current pressure on the roads and bridges.

Its great to see Nigeria moving into 21st century. These new scanners will cut delivery time across the border. The guardian reported thousands of trucks were backed uo because of physical checkd. The current issues will be corrupt officials and multiple checkpoints. If everything goes right lower prices for everyone.

It's interesting to note the customs donates siezed rice to IDPs. It shows theirs nothing wrong with rice. I dont know why the customs boss made that claim knowing this.

By Eromosele Abiodun

The effort to facilitate trade and speedy clearance of cargo in Nigeria's busiest land border will be revved up soon as the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) and its Beninoise counterpart have taken delivery of a new cargo scanning machine donated by the European Union (EU) at the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) joint border post, Seme-Krake.

Valued at about N8.1 billion, the scanner is said to be an upgrade on the old fixed scanner at the cost of N3.54 billion and installed by the Nigerian Nuclear Regulatory Authority (NNRA) in 2013.

Addressing journalists at the border post, the Controller, Seme Area Command of the NCS, Comptroller Muhammed Uba, said the scanner, which is currently being test-run, would be maintained by ECOWAS for two years.

He said Customs officers of both countries have been trained on how to read images from the scanner, stating that when operational, it would facilitate trading activities at the border post.

He said with the deployment of the scanner, Customs would only subject goods to physical examination only when in doubt of scanned image.

"Officers have been trained; both Benin and Nigeria Customs Service along with other agencies who are on the stage in the cargo clearance process. The scanner is bought by the European Union for both Nigeria and Benin. All types of trucks will be passing through the scanner and officers who have been trained will read the images and whatever is inside the truck, the officers will know. In any case where the image is not clear, the truck will be subjected to 100 per cent physical examination," he said.

Meanwhile, he has announced the seizure of 175 pieces of textiles materials worth N2.2 million smuggled into the country from Benin Republic.

Mohammed, who paraded the items at Seme border, also said the Command generated the sum of N2.62 billion from March till date, while intensified operations by the enforcement unit have drastically reduced smuggling activities to the barest minimum.

Mohammed said about 8,304 bags of 50kg foreign rice, which is equivalent to over 14 trucks load of rice worth N89 million were also seized, while another 71 cartons of expired food seasonings worth N458,109, and 336 cartons of alcoholic drinks worth N5 million were intercepted during the period.

Others are, "31 X 25litres Jerry Cans of vegetable oil worth N269,911; 35 X 50kg Bags of sugar, N444,785; 138 x 25litres of PMS, worth N212,100 and 71 Cartons of Expired Food Seasonings worth N458,109. 175 pieces of 6 Yards of Textiles worth N2.24million, 15 sacks of used clothes N677,486 and 28 cartons of Medicament, N1,083,978 and 410 sacks of School bags worth N13.2million. Also, 2,000 cartons of Expired Biscuits, N7,742,700 and another truck loaded with 493 packs of Baby Diapers worth N4.1million, "he said.

Mohammed also disclosed that "1,582 parcels of Cannabis Sativa found concealed in an Indomie truck; and another notable arrest of 55 parcels of same Cannabis Sativa concealed in a Sienna bus. A total of 1,686 parcels were arrested (with street value worth of over N30 million) for the period under review.

"As part of our community service, the Customs Comptroller General, directed that a total of 25,000 bags of foreign parboiled rice (equivalent of 42 trailer trucks), 650 bags of Sugar, 150 cartons of tin tomato, 150 bags of flour, and 250 kegs of vegetable oil were transferred to the Nigeria Army Corps of Supply and Transport (NACST) between the month of April and May, for onward delivery to Yobe State Government, Damaturu for distribution to IDPs in the state.

"A total of 11 vehicles have also been seized notable among them are Toyota Highlander (2005), Range Rover (2007), Toyota Rav 4 (2006), Toyota Venza (2010) and others with combined duty paid value of N46.1million" he stated, adding that six suspects were arrested during the period under review."

How is teaching the civil war going to solve our problems that are jumping for it?

Who is going to write the texts?

See, no amount of history or compelling evidence can change anything except the people involved are ready and willing to owe up to the truth. Without this, even the most compelling evidence will be lost in controversy.

Look at the international political scene and you will see that politics without conscience is dark art.
The civil war didnt cause your problems so teaching it wont solve them. You take the lessons of the civil war and learn from those.

The text are written by historians who have their work peer reviewed. They cant just write nonsense without citing first and second hand sources.

Your opinion is your to keep. Nobody is begging you or snyone else to accept historal facts. Controversy topics should be freely debated with facts qnd arguments that's all.

EducationNigeria Orders Teaching Of History As Standalone Subject by Blue3k(op): 8:21pm On Jun 21, 2019
The Federal Government has directed all basic and secondary schools across the country to immediately implement the teaching of history as a standalone subject from the next academic calendar.

Sonny Echono, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education made this known on Friday in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja.

The Federal Government on June 18 promised the return history to school curriculum while ensuring that all primary school teachers are trained to deliver digital literacy.

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has declared at the launch of Education for Justice Programme that government had kick-started implementation in 12 primary and secondary schools across the six geo-political zones and instructional classes have also commenced.

According to Mr Echono, the directive has already been given and it is automatic that all the schools should implement simultaneously.

"By the next academic calendar, history will be taught as a standalone subject.

"It is with immediate implementation. So, definitely for the next academic year everybody will fall in line because we already articulated the curriculum and the examination should be done along those lines," he said.

Why is ok for Nigeria to import the cows and pigs but not the beef and pork? After all these years of protectionism they chose not to adapt and tax payers have to heap more subsidies on thier business. Now states and FG are planning building cattle reservesfor them. The cost to use facilities hasn't been mentioned either.

The economy will be fine. Nigerians will get cheaper food prices. The cattle rearers will simply have to adapt like fishers and fish farmers do.

Forget about all the exaggerated profits of marijuana. Nigeria is a poor economic and do not posses the technological strength to refine marijuana for other products apart from smoking.

Smoking of marijuana degrades mental health i.e, you're no longer interested in learning new things. Lazy attitude towards work. etc,

So, marijuana should remain ban in Africa else, people would get poorer and crime rate would be high
Well you're wrong on multiple levels. Did the crime rate spike in Lesotho where its currently legal and being exported. They aren't poor as a result either. Your not speaking facts its just emotional conjecture.

Nigerians can't make candy or medicine because you dont know how right? So what if all they want to do is get high. Drinking is worse for health overall yet its legal.
