wonder233: Tribe and religion are the only things that matters to Nigerians. Nigerian politicians are the most lucky in the world, no matter what they do, the loyalty of their followers is blind and unquestionable. , MelesZanawi, beerfraud, madridguy, etc, exist solely to hate a certain tribe. They don't mind mortgaging the future of their kids for corrupt politicians, just to service that hate. Its a pity True. Later some clowns would be quick to blame Western powers, when we are our own problem. |

Gr8amechi: You guys are funny, GEJ and Tinubu put nothing on ground before the removal.
Did GEJ increase wages?
All he did was SURE-P which was another great fraud.
The only thing that can cushion effects of subsidy removal includes:
1. Functional refineries more than one and give out license to import to multiple importers, this will float the market with products and create competition, also you disband association for importers.
2. Roll out a transportation master plan, where you revamp our current transportation system phasing out those dead buses and trucks and bringing in PPP where state and fg own 40% and private investors has 60%. This will cushion the effect of subsidy removal on transportation and prevent rises in cost of food and overall prevent hyperinflation.
3. Improve on electricity and reduce duties on solar energy, further provide incentives for people willing to adopt solar energy, this will reduce the pressure on the national grid and also on petrol.
The truth is Nigeria is likened to a petrol economy majority of our Small and medium scale enterprises depends heavily on petrol.
Our transportation system is not organised so any increases in petrol in the name of subsidy will have ripple effects.
Both GEJ and Tinubu flopped.
What we need is efficiency not this very approach, subsidy removal require years of careful planning and infrastructure implementation. Anything else is a mere knee-jerk reqction and it's not going to have any different effect. Good points. |

Lithiumite: If they aren't fit for purpose they need to be directed to where they would be more useful to the economy and sack the inefficient ones amongst them like elrufai tried to do with derelict teachers in Kaduna at the time..... agriculture is also entrepreneurship, there are so many making good money from farming ,this will add more productivity to the economy than deadwood.......Pls tell me what's the use of FRSC,vii,go to all our research institutions is solely administrative staff that fills up the whole place with no research whatsoever going on,what the hell do we need a whole ministry for special duties for, same with women affairs, humanitarian affairs, ministry of aviation, police affairs and many more to numerous to mention.....all this would serve as departments under some ministries True. E.g NDDC and ministry of Niger delta, there are many examples. I disagree on that of FRSC. I tell ppl that it is easier to create more jobs in Nigeria than in US, becos US is developed and industrialised while Nigeria is not. If the government is serious through power, steel, road, mining and agriculture they can create massive jobs. Secondly I feel the FG is bear so much Burden than the states, that's while am an advocate of true federalism or a situation where the states take over some responsibility like state police, internal roads, agriculture,Infrastructure and development of the local areas this would help reduce High costs of governance at the federal level. |

Lithiumite: This govt has already made provision to recruit more people into the security agencies.....the govt already identified the manpower shortages you mentioned......I agree govt profligacy is a problem caused by politicians and top officials but it's nothing compared to the gigantuan deadwood in our civil service, more like people getting paid for adding no value to the economy.....if I had the powers I would order a govt shutdown for a reappraisal and implementation of reforms only critical services like security agencies, education, health and core govt functions would be allowed to operate until a total overhaul is done, you need to dlsee the oransanye report to understand what I am talking about, several govt agencies duplicating themselves and downright useless.....also legislators and ministers should drive their own cars or at most not more than one official cars with no police security and huge number of aides. Am never an advocate for oversized civil service, but than since we have no reliable welfare or unemployment scheme in this country, sacking or retrenching most civil servant workers would lead to more hardship. Not everyone is inclined or passionate about been entrepreneurs or farmers, some are born to be business owners. What I suggest is for the government to tackle corruption, fish out ghost workers in the civil services, diversify the economy, promote local and international investments into the country. Most civil servant are idle becos the government failed to do their part, in countries were law and order is upheld and the system is working, you would see that there civil servants are highly engaged, becos they are the ones that run the system of government. |

Lithiumite: The existing civil work force are already gazetted and already have some form of management training or the other, that's a good place to start......this will reduce govt recurrent alone by 30 to 40% and the savings can then be used for more purposeful things like insfarctruture for development.....if this civil servants are absorbed into private sector, that's more employment opportunities for the so-called unemployed you mentioned.....if 20,000 new farms were to be established for instance that's well over a million jobs from farms alone, then add other allied services, like transportation, processing, technicians, extension workers, construction workers etc then you would see the big picture......I am not saying this is the only solution to our economic woes but it's just one of the simple things we can do to boost our economy and free up govt finances and even make more money for govt through taxes and levies, subsidy removal is just one of them. You failed to mention corruption and high cost of governance by the political class, that's where the main savings would be done Do you know that some of the government ministries and parastals are under staffed? example the police force. |

What Nigeria needs now is production, production and more production, once the economy is expanded, there will be more money for everyone......we need to find how to boost our economy without causing inflation...... Mere minimum wage increment will bring just about that and it's still papering over the cracks......govt recurrent expenditure alone is weighing down our economy,it needs to be reduced The ones that are unemployed ,have they been engaged into productive sectors? |

Adabestseason: The best solution is to decentralize the NNPCL(south-south,south east, south west, north east, north central, north west) to look for fuel and supply to each region at their own price and license artisanal refiners to use local technology since the cabal could not allow refineries to work. They are against the workings of government refineries and turn to glorify private individual in their believe every should be privatized to them and their children that government has no need doing business who told you when china is operating their businesses successfully. So meeting TUC,NLC is a waste of time and resources when most members are parts and parcels of the myriads of problems facing the country. This is 100% solution Na lie, is privatisation in the telecom sector not working? Privitise the refineries, its that simple. |

When we are saying that there is high rate of unemployment, this one is saying civil service should be downsized. And as usual, the likes of FFK or onuonuga will soon use the ethnic or religious card if it gets worse! NLC from what I have read and heard,do not oppose subsidy removal! They are against the timing of the removal esp considering that the appropriation act made it clear that provisions were made for subsidy till the end of June 2023! Subsidy removal must go through a process before its put to an end! That process was not adhered to and that is what they are against! Return to status quo which is revert to the former price and then start negotiations with organised labour and TUC! Once you have done the negotiations and implementation have taken place, you can then start the next phase of subsidy removal! Its that simple! Well spoken. And that is why the opposition should not remain quiet at this point in time. I just do not understand Nigerian politics. This is the season where the opposition becomes vocal in pushing its agenda. This is where it gains traction by making alternative policy hay while rain is falling on government to shape the and develop the country.
But when it should be doing its work all one hears is token disapproval, nothing of substance while being headbutted by government propagandists. Democracy is not working well in this country at all. Lazy actors everywhere you look.

casualobserver: A Nigerian senator earns $2000 a month, a us senator earns $15,0000 a month. They all get expenses and allowances.
But that is not the point, a government jet that costs $50m is $50m where it is in America, Ghana or Nigeria. A president will get a salary whether his population is 2m or 200m. The difference between the salary of a president of a country with 2m will not be that different from the salary of a president of a country of 300m.
But there are certain things that are proportional to the size of the population, the economy and other metrics of a country. If your GDP is $500m and you spend $10b on petrol subsidy, then 2% of your economy is fuel subsidy. If your GDP is 23 trillion, $10b is only 0.04%. We are spending 50 times the proportion of our GDP on subsidy compared to America. Also Nigeria has only 11m cars, America has 262m cars. So per car the subsidy in America is 24 times less. Further more govt revenue in Nigeria Is $40b, in America it is $2.6 TRILLION. A country making 2.6 trillion in taxes and revenue spending $10b on 262 million cars is not the same as another making $40b in revenues spending a quarter of his total revenue on just 11m cars. Like I said we are not mates. Are you an APC supporters? This article is well analysed and logical. Most APC supporters do not have brain to carryout analytical thinking or less you copied and pasted. Kudos. |
