You will read my subsequent post where I am encouraging the question(s) and that is the approach an influencer like Aproko Doctor should have done. He did not approach the conversation correctly and ended up confusing people more. Aproko Doctor should have approached the conversation from a point of complimenting food production versus the natural thought of eliminating organic food production.

Humans over the centuries have evolved and as we evolve, everything about us evolve so we can adapt to the environment. Level of modification depends on the advancement in science and technology and truly understanding what goes into commercial food processing. Food processing at its commercial stage in Nigeria is already modified, irrespective of the level. Even here in the US, no one forces you to buy GMO foods, if anything, they clearly marked as GMOs/ Organic and you make a choice which you want.

GMO is not a novel invention, the issue is that we haven't discussed it and that is the power an one of the advantages of SM. Social media evokes conversations about every and anything.

Now, in 2025, it has become a strong conversation in Nigeria, we can talk about the advantages, disadvantages but more importantly correct false narratives that associate GMOs to Obesity, Cancer, Autism (or any form of intellectual disability), Dementia, HBP and other health related diseases. This is the angle that puts fear in people and when a Medical Doctor approaches a vastly broad conversation like that unprepared, he is set to cause more confusion.

There are inherent risks in every aspect of science. Take for instance, vaccines. Do they have benefits? I strongly believe so and that is why I encourage vaccinations, do they have risks? absolutely yes but the benefits of prevention have shown more success than failures. Let me be honest with you. You are already consuming GMOs long before now in Nigeria. Take for instance, the "Natural Orange/ Apple juice" people have been consuming in Nigeria. Do you think they are primarily organic at their commercial stage? I can go on and on..The only difference is that it is now getting attention. Science will be useless without questions and that is what this does.

The embolden are general human health problems you will find across the world, the difference is that many of them are either undiagnosed, wrongly diagnosed or a combination of both in Nigeria. The embolden, particularly the latter 2 have more genetic implication than foods. If HBP/ heart related disease runs in a family, every child, irrespective of food choice or lifestyle is inherently at risk as that is a primary risk factor.

Except you are consuming wild hens/ chickens, you are infact eating some form of genetically modified bird. Nigeria still smuggle frozen fishes, turkey and chicken from countries with advanced science and technology in animal husbandry. The chicks that become layers numerous poultries in Nigeria use have been modified in some way, irrespective of how you feed them. The maize and other ingredients that make the feed for these birds have all been genetically modified.

In addition, Nigeria is the most populous nation in Africa and the 6th most populous nation in the world, but we do not have the requisite food security to match our current population or its projected growth. We need GMO, particularly food crops to help compliment not eradicate the efforts of organic agriculture. For a country that has struggled to integrate large scale mechanized farming across the country, we need GMO to supplement the efforts of our farmers.

Like you rightly put, most food crop we have today have been genetically modified to adapt to changes in environment, pest control/ infestation and population growth. Take Potato for example, do people really think this variant in shape and size is the original potato? Absolutely not. The original wild potato were smaller in size and required more to feed people. So what did humans do? Modify potato to be bigger, that way, it can feed more people with less. The same is true for tomato, corn and other food/ cash crops.

While there are inherent health risks, the benefits far outweigh the disadvantages.

Our farming land are reducing significantly. Remember the places that used to be farms when you were growing up, they are now estates where people are living, the available land is reducing, the land is less fertile due to repeated use yet we are increasing in population
