Firstly Nigeria is a secular state and not an Islamic state . All secular states have 2 days as weekends i. e Saturday and Sunday and this has nothing to do with whether u are a Christian , Muslim or ATR worshipper . It’s only Israel where they practice Judaism that they give Saturday as a religious holiday and Saudi/other Muslim countries where they give Friday as religious holiday . In secular states , Saturday and Sundays are just weekends and that’s that .

Also , the talk about holidays Muslims get as much holidays as Christians get for heir respective festivals . Christians get holidays for Christmas and Easter while Muslims get Holday for the two Sallah’s as well as Prophet Mohammed’s birthday ( which some Muslims even argue it is wrong to celebrate )

And like u rightly said , up north Muslims hardly work on Fridays . Before Jumat sef u would’ve seen civil servants out of their respective offices already only to return on Monday . Even teachers and students don’t have Friday as a normal work day . In fact they allowed us to use Friday as our CDS because that is the day they don’t need corpers to work like the rest of the teachers . Even students just dress up for school on Friday knowing they are just going there to play.

Also there is a chance of regular trips abroad where the staff will regularly get dollar as estacode/out of station allowance

if you are in on of those regulatory agencies - they can just post you to sit on rig or terminal. you will chop fat allowances, and they will also be settling you. and you will likely be playing solitaire all day

if you are in a place like lag, you will be collecting protection money from stations and if there is fuel scarcity you can run around accusing dealers of fake hoarding and shake them down even more.

imho NNPC is great for people who want to pursue masters etc while on the job. much less pressure than when you are in the private sector.

The poor remuneration + non payment of certain earned allowances is the major reason why ASUU always embark on strike but they mask it with revitalization of universities and fighting for the survival of public universities system bla bla.

Also, it doesn't help that promotion in academia is based solely on publications., hence the aphorism, "publish or perish"

You go do research finish, go through the rigour of writing the paper and still have to dole out 200k to a journal to publish it? On top your chikena salary which is not even enough to attend to your family responsibilities.

Whatsapp & telegram groups have sprung up where people advertise their papers and seek financial collaborators whose name are added as co-authors to publish a paper. They advertise these co-authorship slots from 20k - 50k depending on the amount required by the journal.

I know someone, a non teaching staff who did a transfer of service from a Federal university to NIMASA in 2023. He was placed on the same level 12/3 he was in the university but guess what, his salary jumped from 300k/month to 2.2m/month. The reason being that NIMASA is a revenue generating agency and they're allowed to fix their salaries.

Dude is now financially stable, and has copped a 2010 Toyota Sienna.

The only good thing about about academia is the job security it provides.

Buying Nigerian used as a first car for a young person is not always ideal , except u are very lucky to buy one without any major issue

I remember when I used to have thoughts that when I’m tired of private sector , I will just go for my PHD and just switch to lecturing because I intend to impart knowledge in the younger ones from the view point of someone who has practiced .

As regards buying decent cars from that salary , except there are other allowances like bulky upfront/housing package , children education support allowance , hefty Cost of living Allowance (COLA ) , etc which is separate from the annual consolidated pay of N7.5m ; the GT will not be able to buy decent Tokunbo cars from that salary o.

If u are not stationed in an expensive state like Lagos , u can save more than those in Lagos . If u are in a place like PH , u may save more

That was why I was against Dangote being handed monopoly when he was pushing for it. If he had been handed that monopoly he craved , he won’t be reducing the price like he’s doing now to compete with NNPC .

Once there’s monopoly , there will be absence of competition and he will just fix the price to whatever he feels like no matter what oil price says in the international market .

If u notice , it seems he has seen that all those propaganda and media campaign aren’t having the desired effects he wanted so he has fallen in line to compete like a normal business would do by price cutting

The NNPC graduate trainee salary package is actually not bad at 7.5m gross per annum .

It’s just that in this T-pain economy where everything is now expensive ; for you to be able to buy a decent Tokunbo car from ur net earnings within 2 years of working , u must be a heavy saver .

Presidential pardon is at the discretion of whoever is the president. A president can give any suspected/convicted criminal pardon if he so desires.

At least Jonathan gave his former boss presidential pardon when he was president.

What Ojukwu did is called treason in LEGALese. Only a president can grant pardon for such without offering any explanation to his actions and that was what Shagari did.

The author gave instances of senior officers that lost their lives simply because they were senior officers when their junior officers executed a coup.

I have that Ademoyega's book "Why we struck" , I read the book and saw through the line of reasoning of the first coupists in this country. The junior officers who planned the coup knew they had to take out the senior officers whom they referred to as "reactionary" . They believe if the senior officers are not taken out, the coup will fail and that was what happened.

You think Ogundipe is not intelligent enough to read the room that the second coupists will not make such mistake? Moreover, the second coup is a northern led coup that would not only take out the officers of Igbo origin but also Yoruba senior officers which Ogundipe was one of.
