Literature / Who Knows The Story Of Medusa? (picture) by boman2014: 12:12am On Jun 04, 2020
Bumped into this. A good read
Who knows the story of Medusa? Yes that ugly lady with the hair of snakes. The Gorgon who men dared not look at else they turn to stone. Do you know her real story?! Well I'll tell you!

When I was in school, I was given a project titled Myths and Legends. Well naturally I settled for Greek mythology and Medusa hit my interest.

I always thought she was evil and all but this is
the true story.

So Medusa was the most beautiful girl in her town. Her hair shone like gold. All men wanted her but she never gave in. She caught the eye of Poseidon the god of the sea and didn't give him the time of day. Well what did he do? He raped Medusa in Athena's temple. Athena was the goddess of wisdom and war.

Now the sad part was Athena was so enraged by what had happened that she cursed Medusa. Not the man who raped her no! Cursed the poor girl who was raped. Turned her into a creature that no man would ever look at again without dying and turned her beautiful hair into snakes.

Now some have claimed that Athena cursed Medusa to protect her but in all my research and even the writings of the poet, the story was consistent.

When I found out the truth behind Medusa, I changed my project and turned it into a tribute called 'Misunderstood'. I recreated her tombstone, changed her garments and created a pendant with her face on it.

Needless to say that was my best project in school and it was on display.

Now to bring it home. Isn't that what happens these days? Both here and abroad? A girl is raped and instead of going for her attackers, you blame her and slut-shame her. Claim she brought it on herald?

When you think of Medusa you think of an ugly Gorgon.

When I think of Medusa I think of a beautiful lonely girl the world failed. Just as the world is failing women today.

Politics / FG: States Will No Longer Get Refunds For Repairing Federal Roads by boman2014: 11:00pm On Jun 03, 2020
Lai Mohammed, the minister of information and culture, says states would no longer be refunded for construction or repair works carried out on federal roads.

Addressing state house correspondents after the third virtual meeting of the federal executive council (FEC), Mohammed said reconstruction works done on federal roads would be supervised by the ministry of works and housing.

“There is a caveat henceforth if any state takes on federal government road, it will not be paid, they will not get any refund,” he told journalists on Wednesday.

“Even if you want to pay from your own pocket, you will still need the permission of the federal government and it will be supervised by the federal ministry of works and housing.”

Mohammed explained that the council approved a refund of N148 billion spent on federal roads by Rivers, Cross River, Ondo, Bayelsa and Osun states.

The minister said the approval of the refund followed a memo presented by Babatunde Fashola, the minister of works and housing.

“You will recall that in 2016, 36 states of the federation sent a very huge bill to the federal government, asking for compensation for money that they have expended on federal roads,” he explained.

“This prompted Mr President to set up a committee to go and verify the claims of these 36 states, whether indeed these projects were actually constructed, were they completed, in line with the federal government standards.

“At the end of that exercise by an inter- ministerial committee, chaired by the minister of works and housing, but also had ministers of education, transportation, finance, minister of state for works, DG BPP and permanent secretary cabinet office as members.

“At the end of that exercise, the committee recommended that the federal government should refund N550,364,297.31 billion to 31 of the 36 states, after they were convinced that, yes indeed, the projects were completed and they were federal government roads.

“The claims of five other states Cross River, Rivers, Ondo, Bayelsa and Osun failed on the grounds that they did not do proper documentation and the committee felt they needed proper documentation.

“So, the committee went back with new terms of reference to ensure that the claims of the five states were in order, that. is why the BPP is on the committee.

“So, at the end of the exercise, the committee now reported that the five states – Cross River with 20 roads and one bridge will get a refund of N18,394,737,608.85, Ondo with six roads to get a refund of N7,822,147,577.08, and Osun with two roads and one bridge to get a refund of N2,468,938,876.78.

“Others are Bayelsa with five roads and one bridge is to get a refund of N38,040,564,783.40 and Rivers with three roads and three flyovers bridges is to get a refund of N78,953,067,518.29.”

The minister said the committees confirmed the roads and the bridges, that not only were they completed, they were in substantial-good form, adding that some of the bridges and roads were built about 10 years ago.

Politics / Abacha Stole Close To $1bn As Head Of State, Says President Buhari by boman2014: 12:28am On May 30, 2020
President Muhammadu Buhari has said that late
General Sani Abacha, Nigeria’s late military
Dictator, stole close to $1bn between 1993 and
1998.

Buhari in an article published in Newsweek, a
United States-based publication, thanked
countries that have returned the looted funds
back to Nigeria.

Though the President did not mention the name
of Sani Abacha directly, it was clear that he was
referring to the late dictator.

Buhari served under the late Abacha as head of
Petroleum Trust Fund.

He said, “And we can now move forward with
road, rail and power station construction -- in
part under own resources -- thanks to close to a
billion dollars of funds stolen from the people of
Nigeria under a previous undemocratic junta in
the 1990s that have now been returned to our
country from the US, UK and Switzerland.

“That these friendly nations agreed to return
these funds after so long is testament to the fact
that Nigeria is rightly seen as an increasingly
stable and beneficial place to transact and
invest. It is much the same across the continent,
with sub-saharan Africa now outpacing Asia,
Europe and North America by some measure in
terms of foreign direct investment inflows-to-
GDP, perhaps for the very first time.”

Hundreds of millions of dollars stolen by the late
Abacha and kept in foreign accounts have since
been recovered by various Nigerian
governments.
I
In 1998, General Abubakar Abdulsalami recovered
$750m from the Abacha family; in 2000, General
Olusegun Obasanjo recovered $64m from
Switzerland; still in 2002, Obasanjo got another
$1.2bn from a deal with the Abacha family and
another $160m in 2003 from Jersey, British
Island. Obasanjo got another $88m in 2003,
$461m in 2005 and $44 in 2006, all from
Switzerland.
I
On his part, former President, Dr Goodluck
Jonathan retrieved $227m from Liechtenstein
while President Buhari got $322 in 2018 and the
last $311 in 2020.

National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Adams Oshiomhole, on Monday, swore in Waziri Bulama as acting National Secretary of the party.

This is coming a few months after a crisis within the party ’ s ranks almost cost Oshiomhole his position.

The Deputy National Secretary, Victor Giadom, had laid claim to the position after an Abuja High Court earlier granted an interim injunction restraining Oshiomhole from parading himself as national chairman.

A truce was reached following the intervention of the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari ( retd .), and the party ’ s National Leader , Asiwaju Bola Tinubu.

The brief ceremony which took place at the APC National Secretariat, in Abuja was attended by some of the party ’ s leaders.

Health / COVID-19: Madagascar Demands N78,200,000 From Nigeria For Herbal Drugs by boman2014: 7:03am On May 18, 2020
REPUBLIC of Madagascar has asked Nigeria to pay 170,000 Euros for the quantity of its COVID-19 cure drugs sent to the Federal Government, it was learnt at the weekend.

The quantity of the consignment sent to Nigeria through Guinea Bissau could not be ascertained yesterday.

Guinea Bissau President Umaro Sissoco Embalo, who visited President Muhammadu Buhari at the State House in Abuja on Saturday, brought the drugs allocated to Nigeria by Madagascar.

President Buhari said Nigeria would take the drug through intensive test to determine its suitability.

A source on Sunday said: “For our consignments in Guinea Bissau, Madagascar has asked Nigeria to pay over €170,000 (N78, 200,000). We have received the invoice because the African country has made us to realise that the drugs are not being given out free.

“We are being asked to pay for the drugs yet to be validated. Since the AU directed the supply of the drugs to African countries, we may have no choice than to pay for it.

“This payment may, however, be one-off because mass importation of the drugs from Madagascar will not be cost effective. By the time we take into account the cost of freight, the amount will be too high.

“This is why we are looking at local options available to us as a nation.

“Some researchers have told us that we have richer herbs to contain COVID-19. In fact, a shop in Wuse 2, Abuja has been discovered to be selling Artemisia Tea with high potency than COV drugs.

“As a nation, we will leave all options open and look inwards. But, we will subject Madagascar herbal drugs to verification or validation.

“The Presidential Task Force (PTF) on COVID-19 is also thinking of asking the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) and the National Institute for Pharmaceutical Research and Development (NIPRD) to relax the protocols and hasten the validation of local drugs for COVID-19.:

The NAFDAC and NIPRD are awaiting the samples from Madagascar for validation.

A highly-placed source in NIPRD said: “We are yet to get the samples for testing and validation. We are hopeful that this week, we might receive them. Our team is on the alert.”

The Director-General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Prof Mojisola Adeyeye, said many researchers and practitioners have responded to its call for expression of interest for the COVID-19 related medicines.

In a statement on NAFDAC website, Adeyeye said:”The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), as at the time of this press release, has only received application from one company for a product the company is presenting (for approval) to the Agency for the treatment of the symptoms of Covid-19, and not for the cure of Covid-19 as a disease.

“Call for expression of interest for the COVID-19 related medicines was made; several researchers and practitioners have responded and are being guided to submit such medicines to NAFDAC for expedited review. The agency continues to encourage all stakeholders to present the products of their research findings and allow these remedies go through internationally recognised process of approval through pre-clinical and where applicable, clinical trials.

“Finally, as the body with the mandate to regulate the conduct of clinical trials in the country, NAFDAC is committed to encouraging and supporting sponsors with appropriate guidance to expedite the development of effective interventions to treat or prevent COVID-19.”

Crime / Baby Survived After Being Shot Twice By Terrorists Inside A Hospital (photos) by boman2014: 9:15am On May 16, 2020
A baby which was shot twice in the leg during an
attack on a Kabul maternity unit which killed 24
people including mothers, nurses and newborns has
survived.

Three gunmen, suspected to be members of terror
group ISIS, entered the building in the Afghan
capital dressed as police officers before throwing
grenades and opening fire with rifles on Tuesday.

At least two of those shot dead were newborn
babies and 15 men, women and children were
injured. The attackers were later shot dead.

But one of the newborns, who was born just three
hours before the attack, survived after doctors
operated on her shattered right leg, the Times
reported.

And during the attack, another mother was forced
to give birth in silence while hiding in a room with
other pregnant women and a midwife as carnage
unfolded around them.

The surviving injured newborn was among several
of babies which have been taken to be cared for at
the Indira Gandhi Children's Hospital in Kabul.

Her mother, Nazia, died in the attack and the
newborn was given the same name by her father
Rafiullah after he had laid his wife to rest.

Dr Noor ul-Haq Yousafzai, a director at the hospital,
told the Times: 'We set Nazia's fracture, so she will
be able to walk when she grows up.'

'But to see a newborn baby, just three hours old, shot
twice. Everyone is shocked. This is inhuman.'

And the mother who gave birth in silence was
helped by a midwife who severed the baby's
umbilical cord with her hand.

'The mother was in pain but was trying not to make
any sound,' the midwife said.

'She even put her finger in the newborn baby's mouth
to stop her from crying,' the woman told AFP by
phone on Friday, her voice still shaking three days
after the attack.

The raid on the Barchi National Hospital has
sparked international outrage.

There were 26 mothers in the hospital on the
morning gunmen posing as members of the Afghan
security forces burst in, said the Doctors Without
Borders charity, which runs the maternity ward.

Eleven of them were killed during the hours-long
attack, including three in a delivery room with their
newborn babies. Five were wounded.

Another 10 sheltered in 'safe rooms', which are
common in Afghanistan and are often armoured to
protect the occupants from gunfire or rockets.

The midwife, who spoke to AFP on the condition of
anonymity, also rushed to one of the safe rooms
when the emergency siren went off.

As she and some of the women huddled inside, they
could hear gunshots as the attackers went from
room to room throughout the hospital.

Then one of the women began to give birth.

'We helped her with our bare hands, we had nothing
else in the room except some toilet paper and our
scarves,' the midwife said .

'When the baby was born, we cut the umbilical cord
using our hands. We used our headscarves to wrap
the baby and the mother.'

As the terrified women tried to stay quiet, they could
hear the gunmen outside asking them to open the
door.

'But we knew they were not (security force members),'
she said.

Three gunmen were later killed by Afghan security
forces.

After the attack 18 babies were taken to another
hospital for treatment - some of them carried from
the scene by heavily armed soldiers.

No group has claimed the attack, but the United
States blamed the Islamic State group.

U.S. Special Representative Zalmay Khalilzad, the
architect of the country's pact with the Taliban, said
in blaming ISIS militants that they opposed any
Taliban deal and sought to trigger an Iraq-style
sectarian war in Afghanistan.

But a senior Afghan government official said the
patterns of recent attacks showed the involvement
of the Taliban and the affiliated Haqqani Network,
whose head, Sirajuddin Haqqani, is the deputy chief
of the Taliban.

The official, who declined to be identified,
questioned Khalilzad's assessment as 'premature'
adding that all the evidence suggested it was not
Islamic State who carried out the raid on the
hospital.

The Taliban has warned it is 'fully prepared' to
counter Afghan forces.

Romance / Pregnant Teenager Fakes Her Kidnap So She Could Give Birth And Sell Her Child by boman2014: 8:22am On May 15, 2020
Feminist, Ozzy Etomi's has narrated how the teenage
daughter of a domestic staff faked her kidnap in Ikoyi just
so she could go and give birth to her child, then sell it
without her mother knowing she was ever pregnant.

According to the narrator, the teenager was living in
Cotonou with her uncle and his wife when the wife called
the girl's mum, who works here in Lagos, to tell her that
she thinks her daughter is pregnant.

The girl denied it and her mother asked for her to come to
Lagos. While in Lagos, the girl, who is plus-sized,
managed to hide her pregnancy and was allegedly
pretending to have her period by cutting herself.

As her delivery date drew close, she faked her kidnap
when she was sent to Falomo on an errand two weeks
ago.

The police were involved in the investigation and it was
soon discovered that she had faked her kidnap so she
could have her child and sell it. She had already made
plans with people willing to buy the child.

Her plan was to return home after childbirth and the sale
of her child was finalized.

Ozzy said the police arrested the girl and all involved. The
girl was eventually released and is now back home with
her mother.

Health / Covid-19: Nigeria Didn’t Ask Madagascar For Cure, They Gave Us ― FG by boman2014: 7:03am On May 15, 2020
Federal Government said yesterday it did not beg Madagascar to supply its COVID-19 syrup to Nigeria, explaining that the country donated the elixir which was accepted in the spirit of African brotherhood.

The government also announced that it has put in place measures to rethink its National Response to COVID-19, saying emerging developments indicated there was need for a change in tactics.

Chairman of the PTF and Secretary to the Government of the Federation SGF, Mr Boss Mustapha, dismissed speculations that Nigeria might have asked Madagascar for a supply of its COVID-19 organic, instead of promoting local researchers for a cure.

He said: “The issue of Madagascar. Let me explain that Nigeria did not ask Madagascar for any solution. That has to be very clear because I have seen some narratives out there giving credence to a line of story.

”That, for me, is only distractive. Nigeria did not ask.

The Madagascan government decided to airlift quantities meant for African countries and so that of West Africa was airlifted to Guinea-Bissau. So, all the members of ECOWAS have their commodities off-loaded in Guinea-Bissau and that was the one I referred to, that we were making arrangements to evacuate.

”But the impression out there was as if we abandoned homegrown solutions and were looking for Madagascan solution. We did not ask for it, but it was taken in the spirit of brotherly love, or African brotherly love.

”We have asked our ambassador there to establish the location, the quantity etc. He has done that. We have to make an arrangement for its freighting out of Guinea-Bissau. There are no flights, so there are so many things we have to consider.
