PoliticsNigeria To Train Astronauts For Space Travel by bornosheikh(op): 6:12pm On Jun 18, 2013
Barring any unforeseen circumstances, the federal government is to start the training of local astronauts for space travel by 2015.

Minister of Science and Technology, Professor Ita Ewa, Monday announced the government's intention to train astronauts for space travel while giving a report of the achievements of his ministry in the past two years, at a press conference in Abuja.

Ewa who said the ministry was waiting for President Goodluck Jonathan to approve the training programme, added that the country would also collaborate with the Chinese government for the development of a space rocket.

Already, the minister said a launch site with a 20-kilometre launch capability had been set up in Epe, Lagos State, adding that 12 engineers from the National Space Research and Development Agency (NARSDA) are in China for training.

Speaking on the benefits to Nigeria from an improved space programme, the minister explained that once the president has approved the programme, the country would start preparing the launch of two more communication satellites.

According to him, the socio-economic benefits of such deployment of satellites include; security surveillance, flood management, environmental surveillance for pest and diseases infested areas, desertification and pollution, especially oil spillage in the Niger Delta.

PoliticsNigeria's Population To Surpass U.S By 2050 by bornosheikh(op): 1:48am On Jun 14, 2013
Nigeria's population is expected to surpass that of the US by 2050, according to new UN projections that predict the west African country could be the world's third most populous by the end of this century.

The UN report World population prospects: the 2012 revision, published on Thursday, predicts the world's population, now at 7.2 billion, will reach 8.1 billion in 2025. By mid-century, the world's population is expected to top 9.5 billion, reaching nearly 11 billion by 2100.

More than half of the growth predicted between now and 2050 is expected in Africa, where the number of people is set to more than double, from 1.1 billion to 2.4 billion. Africa's population will continue to rise even if there is a future drop in the average number of children each woman has, says the report, which predicts the number of people living on the continent could reach 4.2 billion (or more than 35% of total global population) by 2100.

Nowhere is perfect, however there are regional variances that deserve our attention. The killings of 'foreign nationals' falls into that category. Trying to point to Zambia/Kenya for 'anti-Somalian' sentiment looks like you are putting your head in the sand. I grew up watching SA tribal wars on television (see below). Township violence is endemic and has a long history As it is now, the ANC govt is happy for the SA underclass to kill and maim foreigners as it means they can continue to plunder freely. The ANC has ended up in the same place as the NP.

The news below is from 1991.

Many South Africans are convinced that the massacre of 23 Inkatha supporters on September 8 was carried out by covert elements of the South African Defence Forces.

They believe the aim was to reignite violence within the black community to take the heat off the de Klerk regime. The violence allows defenders of apartheid to argue that majority rule will lead to the violation of the human rights of minorities.

In the week following the attack, more than 100 people, mostly residents of townships surrounding Johannesburg, were killed by Inkatha supporters.

Unidentified killers shot up passenger trains, killing and wounding many. Several passengers were killed when they jumped from moving trains to escape. Black workers waiting at bus stops were gunned down.

The September 8 massacre occurred as 300 hostel dwellers in the township of Thokoza were marching to an Inkatha rally. Three killers stepped out of surrounding houses and opened fire with automatic rifles.

Without evidence, senior Inkatha leaders in the Transvaal immediately blamed the ambush on the African National Congress, encouraging their followers to launch reprisals.

PoliticsOyinbo Discuss Kano Riots In Westminster 1953 by bornosheikh(op): 4:05pm On Jun 09, 2013
Surprising points :

1) Population of the North = 17 million
2) Oyinbo stated the 'economic importance' of keeping the three regions together (at all costs mentality)
3) Workers within the Kano native administration were armed and took part in these riots
4) Attacks took place in 'strangers quarters = sabon gari', so local youths went and attacked southerners.

Same ish, different year

NIGERIA (KANO RIOTS)
HC Deb 20 May 1953 vol 515 cc2082-5 2082

§ The following Question stood upon the Order Paper:

80. Mrs. WHITE

To ask the Secretary of State for the Colonies what information he has about the recent disturbances at Kano; and if he is satisfied that proper arrangements are made for the holding of meetings by persons who do not necessarily share the views of the ruling authorities.

§ The Minister of State for Colonial Affairs (Mr. Henry Hopkinson)

With your permission, Mr. Speaker, and the permission of the House, I will now answer Question No. 80.

Serious rioting, the exact origins of which are not yet clearly established, broke out at Kano on 16th May, after the Native Authority had cancelled all permits for political meetings in view of prevailing tension. The rioting was largely confined to the strangers' quarter outside the city walls and did not spread to other parts of the Region. Originally the main participants in the riots appear to have been lawless hooligans, but the fighting soon took on an inter-tribal character, with Northerners fighting Southerners. Some of the rioters were equipped with firearms.

Following a curfew on 16th May the fighting died down but broke out anew on the following day. Substantial reinforcements of police and troops were flown to Kano that day and a state of emergency was proclaimed throughout the Region the following day, the 18th. My latest information is that the situation is now well in hand and the opposing factions have been separated by a barbed wire barrier. Casualties among the rioters according to latest reports total 43 killed and 204 injured. In addition three Native Authority police have been injured.

No troops have been used in action so far. Information is not available at present whether there has been significant 2083 damage to property. I am sure that the House will join with me in deploring this savage outbreak and in enjoining restraint on all political parties and groups in Nigeria in order that an opportunity may be given to repair the damage done to Nigerian unity by this useless violence.

As regards the second part of the Question, I would refer the hon. Lady to the answer given by my right hon. Friend on 18th March to the hon. Member for Leek (Mr. Harold Davies). But I should add that the Emergency Regulations made on 18th May apply inter alia to meetings and processions.

Mrs. White

Can the right hon. Gentleman tell us whether any special police precautions were taken before Sunday? Since notice of this meeting had been given and the meeting was cancelled and Kano is a well-known centre of communal dispute, I should like to know whether any special police precautions were taken in a situation which was likely to be troublesome. Secondly, as allegations are being made by the Action Group, who sent me a very long cable within the last half hour, that workers within the native administration were armed and took part in these riots, will the right hon. Gentleman ask his right hon. Friend the Colonial Secretary to see that an independent inquiry is made into the circumstances?

§ Mr. Hopkinson

I have no information about special police precautions, but I have no doubt that the Lieutenant-Governor, who is extremely competent and who knows the situation there very well, will take all the necessary measures. With regard to the second part of that supplementary question, I have no information at the present time and I think that I had better await a further report before promising anything definite in the way of an inquiry.

§ Mr. J. Griffiths

Whilst agreeing at once with the Minister that we all deplore these riots and hope that there will be no repetition of them, may I ask the right hon. Gentleman that there should be a full inquiry into the immediate circumstances, particularly into the arrangements which are made before a meeting? Would the right hon. Gentleman find out whether it would be possible for the 2084 Governor to make an appeal, with which we would all like to be associated, to all leaders of parties in Nigeria at a time of political controversy to join together in appealing to their supporters to allow meetings to proceed peacefully without regrettable incidents of this kind? Do Her Majesty's Government propose at an early date to make a statement on the constitutional position and the arguments about it?

§ Mr. Hopkinson

I will certainly make inquiries about police arrangements and inform the House as soon as I can. As to the constitutional issue, of course there is no doubt whatever that these events had their origin in political troubles and dissensions which we so much regret and which came to a head in March. I am hoping that as a result of my own visits there and the subsequent meetings of the two Southern Houses—the meeting of the Northern House is to take place today— and of the inquiries which have been going on, we shall be able to make a full statement of the intentions of Her Majesty's Government with regard to the constitutional issue in Nigeria before we rise for the Whitsun Recess.

§ Mr. Griffiths

Will the right hon. Gentleman undertake to see that an appeal is made to all political leaders to ensure that when they hold meetings the rival supporters do not come together?

§ Mr. Hopkinson

Certainly.

§ Mr. Tilney

Even though the recent riots tend to accelerate the centrifugal feelings of the three regions, will my right hon. Friend bear in mind the immense importance economically of keeping the three regions together and not letting them Balkanise themselves?

§ Mr. Hopkinson

I am fully aware of all these matters and hope to cover them in my statement.

§ Mr. Hobson

Is the Minister satisfied that there is police protection for the Moslem majority in the North?

§ Mr. Hopkinson

There are 17 million people in the North of whom 13 million are Moslems.

§ Mr. Fenner Brockway

Will the right hon. Gentleman make not merely a Departmental inquiry but a very thorough, penetrating inquiry in view of the loss of 2085 life and certain very disturbing circumstances such as that the Lieutenant-Governor was warned five days before these riots and that members of the national administrative staff there had been given special leave so that they might attack a meeting which was being held?

§ Mr. Hopkinson

As soon as we have further information on these matters I have undertaken to inform the House, and I shall certainly do so. I am not aware of the fact that members of the administration were given special leave.

§ Mr. Fenner Brockway

I have had very definite information.

§ Mr. Alport

In view of the fact that Her Majesty's Government maintain strict impartiality in these matters, will my right hon. Friend ensure that the ex parte statements that have been made in various quarters of this House are not given more weight than they deserve?

§ Sir H. Williams

On a point of order. We have now exceeded Question Time by 35 minutes. Can we have the Ballot?

§ Mr. Speaker

I am grateful to the hon. Member for his assistance.

Mr. Dugdale

May I ask the right hon. Gentleman one simple question? Can he tell us how many police there are actually available now in Kano and district and whether he is satisfied that the number is adequate?

§ Mr. Hopkinson

I cannot say exactly how many police are there, but there are also troops who have been flown in and we are satisfied that the number is at present sufficient.

Somalia's president says he "wants answers" from South Africa after the brutal murder of a Somali man in Port Elizabeth, Al Jazeera has learned.

The Somali man, 25-year-old Abdi Nasir Mahmoud Good, was stoned to death on May 30 by a mob. The violence was captured on a mobile phone and shared on the internet.

Sheik Mohammed, Somalia's president, called on his South African counterpart Jacob Zuma to "act immediately" to arrest those responsible.

Kamal Gutale, chief of staff in the Somali presidency, told Al Jazeera on Monday: "The president has asked Mr Zuma and his foreign minister to look into the matter and investigate the brutal killing and violence."

The murder is the latest in a number of attacks on Somali immigrants in South Africa. Police are investigating the death but no one has been arrested.

Graphic footage

The Somali presidency said the issue was raised on the sidelines of the Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD) in Tokyo on Sunday, after the Somali community was hit by a series of attacks in South Africa over the last week.

The graphic footage shows the bare-chested Good lying in the middle of a street while a mob pelts him with rocks and boulders as pedestrians and vehicles pass by.

Local media said Good was attacked while trying to protect his shop from looters. He was also stabbed in the violence.

The Somali community in South Africa, which numbers a few hundred thousand, reacted with outrage.

The Somali Association of South Africa (SASA) told Al Jazeera that at least five other Somalis have been injured and about 40 shops have been looted in the four provinces across the country.

Government inaction

"At the time, President Zuma was not aware of the incident and expressed surprise," Gutale said.

The South African president promised to look into the matter, he said.

But SASA said that the South African government has repeatedly failed to act on this and previous attacks on foreigners.

"This is not the first time; this is happening over and over again. The South African government is not taking action, the community is angry and every time this happens, nothing is ever done," said SASA spokesman Ismaeel Abdi Adan.

The South African presidency was unavailable to comment.

The African Centre for Migration and Society at Witwatersrand University in Johannesburg, said in a report released in 2012 that Somali-run businesses suffered disproportionately from crime, including attacks by competing South African traders.

The South African government has said that previous violence against foreigners was a result of criminality and not xenophobia.

In 2008, more than 50 foreign African nationals were killed in a spate of violence against foreign nationals across the country.
