Just last month, one of the permanent secretaries in the ministry of education, Dr Goke Adegoroye, painted a gory picture of the decay that is the hallmark of the Nigerian University System in a speech purportedly written and presented on behalf of Yar’adua at the convocation ceremony of OAU, Ife.

He mentioned many of the corrupt malpractices prevalent in the ivory towers of education in the country, the consequences of which have eroded the quality of university education in recent times. These include cases of sex or bribe for grades, lecturers indulging in absenteeism, interferences in promotional cases and many more vices.

Although Mr. Servant Leader denied that he did not approve of the speech which cast the lecturers and the educational system in bad light, nobody is fooled (except the Servant Leader) because the level of decadence in the tertiary institutions is an open secret.

With that background about the quality of education in Nigeria, would anyone blame the Multinationals if they go after graduates produced outside Nigeria? In today’s economic world characterized by globalization, human capital is the most potent source of a company’s competitive advantage. How can a company strategically operate in business arenas dominated by sharks in the traditional Red Ocean territory – a euphemism for the bloody competition prevalent in industries where many companies are fighting for a congested market place? Do they have the technical know-how to carve out a Blue Ocean territory which their company alone will keep to themselves without having to contend with any rival?

While there are some good graduates produced by the system, the overwhelming majority will not be able to deliver on the strategic mission and vision of Multinationals; hence nobody can falter their preference for graduates produced outside the shore of Nigeria. If you are a human resources guy, will you go for half-baked graduates as part of your professional recruitment for your company? That will surely sound like a death-kernel for your company and your career as well.

He is not TOO slow my people. The damage done to this country can not be solved with a 100m dash but with marathon as pointed out by a memeber ealier on. You should note the difference between a dictatorial goverment and demoracy. It is better to go slow and solve problems than rush without achievements. In fact, he can not run more than the bureaucratic process of democracy can permit him. All we need to do for him is pray for him to get well so that he can perform his duties energetically. Period.

How long have you lived in UK ? As a matter of fact I lived in London since I was 13 and know most of the country pretty well . I could really travel through London blindfolded. No I am not against "diasporans (?)" , I just get fed up with people going on as if the UK (or their tenure in the country) is the best thing that ever happened to the world . I don't hate the UK either for your information ; it still remains to me a second home and I still get well-paying get freelance work from the UK. I should be worried about my many relations there who are facing extreme hardship at the moment. Peace.

It is officially projected that more than 600,000 jobs will be lost in UK in 2009 though , or average of 1600 jobs a day

I don't want you think that I was trying to compare UK with Nigeria or any other deloping counrty. I want you to understand that I am tryin to analyse the current economic situation. I have being in the British Energy Industry for 7 years I know the current energy situation in UK. In Sellafield There is no any current Nuclear power plant in construction and most of the time the older Nuclear plants that are always on maintenance or fuel re-processing. The last nuclear power plant was commissioned in 1995 and it took 10 years for construction. Even that, it is a Canadian reactor (CANDU). Most of the work done in Selafield is decommissioning of the existing plants, that generates tons of nuclear waste. The government wanted to new plants but doesnt have the right technolgoy, and the French government refuse to licensed their design unless the government give them stakes in the british energy.

Make ur research and find out: ABB is an American company, Alstom is French company, Weirs is an American Company, Black & Veacth is American, and these are service industries

If you take the power generating companies. RWE npower is a German company. Eon is german company. EDF is French. Scottish power is own Spanish Iberdrola Group.

Some people may call it capitalism in its purest form, but the UK economy is being badly hurt because of the capital flight. All the profit the companies are making is going out of the country. No matter what happened, the UK economy is being badly hurt by the current condition and the government is feeling it. Services industries cannot sustain country without abundant natural resources.

What is with the weird need for some, on here, to profess love for Nigeria on a forum using a moniker, and not their real name and address? At least include your name, address and picture of yourself, so when I meet you on the street, I can at least say for a fact that you are the one who felt you needed to come on nairaland to say " I LOVE NIGERIA" for all to know that you do. I would think your actions would speak louder than mere words, but I guess words seem to mean a lot more to many in the " I LOVE NIGERIA" crowd. roflmao!!
