actually, it is an apprenticeship system, a very laudable one at that, a system that works and that is why ibos of southeastern Nigeria are the major free market entrepreneurs in the entire Africa, an apprentice after serving his term gets set up with enough capital and goods to start his businesses, including a paid for business premises, it is a more assured method of employment(self) than being a university graduate in Nigeria, there was a ted-ed talk on it, it is many things but definitely not slavery. Similar thing is practised among the Jewish and Asian communities in America, but the most broad reaching and effective one is the one practiced here in Nigeria, pity some of them are narrow minded political bigots whose only difference between them and Islamic fundamentalists is the absence and aversion to violence.
