I think its the beliefs that you are (rightly) atheistic towards, and you are agnostic in your own understanding. You have a rather romantic view, I daresay. This is like saying the world was rosy and without wars before the invention of the gun and the canon.

Colonies of apes and monkeys fight wars without spears and arrows as did humans before the invention of spears and arrows, and in fact, spears and arrows developed out of the need to win wars just as the submarine and nuclear bomb was developed for the same purpose.

Wars (or conflict, if you prefer) were more likely between hunter gatherers precisely because of resources. A group might arrive at a source of water or food and find a weaker group their already. I wish they did negotiate to share, but that would require a belief that primitive humans were more intelligent than current humans, and there is no evidence to make me believe that.

Karma is not the same thing as retribution, my Lord, as triplechoice pointed out. A murderer may not be caught and punished by the law nor might they be murdered, but they'd still go around with the thought of their act on their mind and the fear of being discovered and punished, which you'd find will psychologically, and in many other ways (they might need to sleep with one eye open and a gun under their pillow), affect their existence. That, my Lord, is karma.

In other words vaccinate 30m kids to save 161 lives.
