Christianity Etc › Re: Feeding Of The 5000, Did It Actually Happened? by budaatum: 6:06pm On Mar 10, 2021
mcfynest:
How did Jesus feed over 5000 people with only 5 loaves of bread and two fishes Matthew 14:13-21?

did it actually happened or was it allegorical?
Op, let me be honest with you and state that no one can really know if it really happened or how it happened if it did happen, though believers will come here and claim it did happen the same way they believe that Christ was born by a virgin. The truth is that it does not matter if it happened or not, there's still a lot to be learnt from both stories in Matthew 15:29-39 and Matthew 14:13-21

You will note that Jesus prayed then fed an unbelievable number of people with an absurdly ridiculously small amount of bread and fish, and they were all full, and there were many baskets of fish and bread left over.

In John, we are informed that a boy provided the five small barley loaves and two small fish, which might make one wonder if anyone else there was asked if they had brought any food. And they might have. I mean, it would be odd for only one boy to have the sense to bring some food out of the thousand who came to hear Christ. If others brought food too, and if, as the boy, they brought more than they can eat - I am assuming the boy is not a pig who can eat so many loaves of bread and fish - can you see how there might be lots left over after everyone shares what they brought and is full?

It's like if people on my street put their loaves of bread and their fish together, instead of everyone building a soakaway under their house, pipes will drain our poo from underneath our houses and we would not all so easily be dying when our soak goes in our wells. If everyone pulls together to invest in electricity instead of everyone selfishly buying their own 'I better pass my neighbour', light will be cheaper and pollution will be less and we will all enjoy our noiseless sleep at night. If everyone pulls together and pays the tax they owe, we'd all be invested in ensuring no one steals our tax money, and our roads will be better and our hospitals will be better and our teachers and our nurses will be paid on time we'd all be more healthy and less stupid and more able to care for the poor amongst us. If we people on Nairaland put our loaf of bread and fish together instead of everyone making out their own little ignorant beliefs are superior to everyone elses, you just imagine how intellectually powerful the almost 3million of us here will become.

But of course, that is mere speculation on my part, and the assuming that literal fish and bread is meant by Jesus Christ who is the bread of life and who makes people fishers of men. I bet you loaves of bread don't mean loaves of bread, and fish don't mean fish, and prayer probably means a whole lot more than fall on your knees and bow down your head and wait for the Lord God to drop manna from heaven.

I can't personally help but be amazed that Christ said greater things than he did shall we do if we could but understand. If he was not lying, and I'm inclined to think he wasn't, just you imagine how much more knowledgeable and wiser we could become and what we might achieve if we pulled our resources together. I'd put it to you that the answer is, quite a lot.

But I repeat, I merely speculate. Before the believers turn up and crucify me for daring to hope.

They similar as in they represent embodiments abstract ideas but they are not the the same. That Jesus was the embodiment of the greek "divine reason" is what John is claiming, while an avatar could just be one of the incarnations of any a hindu god(s). Potayto Potahto.
Whatever abstract idea Jesus was embodying, was an avatar of that body, is the point.

The world has evolved from avatar just meaning a hindu god, Martian. We humans and our language kinda do work that way.

Why not instead of picking around what He said, read up to learn everything He actually said because it all constitutes His Truth, and then decide afterwards if Jesus Christ is really for you or not for you. undecided
Stop accusing others of what you yourself do.

Avatar
1784, "descent of a Hindu deity to earth in an incarnate or tangible form," from Sanskrit avatarana "descent" (of a deity to the earth in incarnate form), from ava- "off, down" (from PIE root *au- (2) "off, away"wink + base of tarati "(he) crosses over," from PIE root *tere- (2) "cross over, pass through, overcome."

Meaning "concrete embodiment of something abstract" is from 1815. In computer use, it seems to trace to the novel "Snowcrash" (1992) by Neal Stephenson.
That, is precisely what is being claimed in the Gospel According to John.

1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

2 The same was in the beginning with God.

3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.

4 In him was life; and the life was the light of men.

5 And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.

6 There was a man sent from God, whose name was John.

7 The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might believe.

8 He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light.

9 That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world.

10 He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not.

11 He came unto his own, and his own received him not.

12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:

13 Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.

14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

Basically, that Jesus was an avatar, as in a "concrete embodiment of something abstract".

It is written in your Bible that the Old Covenant is an everlasting that God made with the people of Israel. Even Jesus Christ affirmed this Truth when He announcing that He did not come to abolish the Old Covenant, submiting that Heaven and Earth will pass away but the Word God will never pass away.

If you do not know what God declared and Jesus Christ, God's avatar, reiterated, is it arrogance to direct you to read the Bible where this is all documented for those who are interested in learning of this Truth to glean? undecided
And yet, Jesus is specifically written to have said:

38 Ye have heard that it hath been said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth:

39 But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also.

40 And if any man will sue thee at the law, and take away thy coat, let him have thy cloak also.

41 And whosoever shall compel thee to go a mile, go with him twain.

42 Give to him that asketh thee, and from him that would borrow of thee turn not thou away.

43 Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy.

44 But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;

45 That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust.

46 For if ye love them which love you, what reward have ye? do not even the publicans the same?

47 And if ye salute your brethren only, what do ye more than others? do not even the publicans so?

48 Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.

And in your own opinion, the old covenant is not abolished!

Please tell me, do you go about doing the things Jesus abolished above, or do you just not understand what you read?

My question was to the one who only Luke did a thorough research of events before penning down. Are we assume to only those writers who said that they did such, did indeed do a thorough research of the sort? I got to wonder how you plan to love your neighbours and your enemies moreso even after they have slapped both your cheeks 7 times 70 times if you have not first abolished the old covenant of "an eye for an eye" from your heart and mind.

I'm just glad and delighted that Jesus has gracefully abolished most of the old covenant in me, and pray the rest of it is abolished in due time, in Jesus Name. Amen

How in the world did you come to the conclusion that Luke did what you call a "through research from eyewitness"? Is it because Luke was listed as a physician that you choose to believe this? undecided
For a person who claims to believe their Bible, I often wonder if you read it or understand what you read.

1 Many have undertaken to draw up an account of the things that have been fulfilled among us, 2 just as they were handed down to us by those who from the first were eyewitnesses and servants of the word. 3 With this in mind, since I myself have carefully investigated everything from the beginning, I too decided to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus, 4 so that you may know the certainty of the things you have been taught.

Yes, all the time. I so enjoy watching life go by, especially after I consider that I could have missed it all after escaping death, first at birth, then at 12, then at 18 and a couple more times since. Imagine everything I might have missed if I had died at any one of those times, and the difference I might not have made if I had not existed.

Yes, I am very grateful for existing and will pray and hope my existence continues for a few years more please because even I know that I have only just begun all that I may accomplish by existing.

I'm afraid to say, it is very common around the world. Companies were renting up office space in San Francisco, causing a scarcity and ramping up prices, only to now find the space is no more needed due to pandemic induced work from home, and they are now forced to write down their investment.

Shop owners must provide an air tight contract that makes this impossible because the new shop buyer is not contract bound.

When I was a child, I used to wait at the busstop in the morning to get a molue and hope the conductor would not get to me for bus fare where I hung at the back door before I jumped off at my stop. I'd have walked it, but school was 7 miles away and I was always late whenever I tried, but I often walked back home. I had no money for the fare and none for food either and would have a hungry long face throughout the school day.

Often, someone would ask, "what's the matter buda", and I would spill my beans about how sad my life was and how bad it was for me and how I could not cope and how I'd want to die, then the person I spilled my beans to will tell me how their life was and I would realise their life was worst than mine and I would not swap mine for theirs even if someone paid me!

And that is the lesson SonofIssachar has taught us here. That every person thinks their burden is the heaviest, but only those who have never seen the priq of another person's father's farm would claim their own father's farm is the biggest priq. Yoruba speakers will get the pun.

Below is Bob Marley teaching the same, "Every man thinketh his burden is the heaviest".

Myer:
Just when you think you understand anything about the Bible, you'll find another verse that proves otherwise.
The above statement is very true and insightful op, and is why many call it a "Living Book", because the more you breathed into it the more it comes alive inside your mind.

The Bible is a big complex book that develops your brain and mind. While as a child you may believe what you read, and understand as a child and think as a child who sees through glass darkly and knows only in part, you will find that as you grow and develop, you will put childish things away and become an adult who sees face to face so that you shall know even as also I am known.

However, and note the seeming contradiction, to become an adult who sees face to face, you must become as a child and be reborn, as in, abandon your beliefs and start as one born out of one's mother's womb as a baby who knows nothing. And then must you ask and seek and knock with all your heart and soul and mind and being until you find understanding. It is precisely this that the Pharisees could not do and which ended with Crucify Him.

If anyone told you picking up your heavy cross and following Christ is easy, they either see you as a child and do not wish to scare you and so ask that you just believe for now until you receive the ministering Holy Spirit, or you have asked for bread and been handed a serpent and a scorpion by those of whom Christ said "Woe"! And there are those who bother not to understand and just collect their thirty pieces of silver and say "Hail, master" and kiss Christ.

May we all gain understanding, in Jesus' Mighty Name.

Random? Like jumping around in the Bible?

Do you know that randomly jumping around is how most read their Bible, and such reading is the main reason most don't understand what they read? I rather recommend one read the Bible from the beginning and turn page to the end, instead of jumping around randomly. It is advice I have taken on myself for the third time.

RegalBeast:
Yes I agree that wisdom comes to the open minded. Even Jesus was very curious about the other religions of the world. Tho this is not recorded in the bible- hence why most Christians think it is okay to be narrow minded.
I would say it is in the Bible that one must be open minded with the guidance of tbe Holy Spirit.

"Out of Egypt I called my Son" is, for instance, one of the many clues to open ones mind in that direction, and "Humans must not live by bread alone", is another pointer to patronize different bakeries.

Narrow minded people are emulating the narrow minded Pharisees who refused to open their minds like a questioning child would and enter their mother's womb to be born again, which I am informed is as difficult as threading a needle through a camel's eye but not impossible.
