It is very important to acknowledge that Jonathan has been looking over his shoulder throughout his presidency. Why should that be the case? He has been reeling from one Obasanjo fabricated crisis to another. When OBJ is fatigued from his intrigues, his godsons such as fannny kayode will take up the cudgels. If you read other threads in this forum, you can see that Nigeria is emerging from Darkness, according to independent economics and business analysts, yet all we hear in the media is that this 'founding father' of PDP is upset, therefore Nigeria is doomed. Thank God we've gotten rid of Obasanjo from the presidency, now let's face the current problems we have at hand.

There are inevitably winners and losers in this unedifying slanging match. The undisputed winner is Hon. Iyabo Obasanjo Bello. Other winners include the beleaguered Nigerian Government and the Nigerian people (including Obasanjo's children, mistresses and wives). The undisputed loser is His Excellency, Segun Obasanjo. Other losers include his confidantes, acolytes, cohorts and the APC. After the demise of her father, Iyabo and her siblings can emerge with their head held high, without all the baggage's that is derived from their father. I have always thought that the big house (estimated value: 1 Billion naira) she lived in Abuja belonged to her, but she has emphatically proved me wrong. My other assumptions about her has also proved wrong. The Nigeria government will enjoy a respite from a morally discredited and flawed man. Obasanjo will no longer influence the next election as everybody thought. Where are the likes of Fani-Kayode? I have not seen him at his usual eating place in Abuja in the past few days. My guy has informed me that he was seen in Abeokuta in the last 48 hours. Is he meeting his oga to plan damage limitation? His non-solicited views has not been aired at the time of my writing. There are now two period in our national life: Before Iyabo's Open Letter (BIOL) and After Iyabo's Open Letter (AIOL). The teflon Obasanjo is now over. It is now open season for those aggrieved to come out and have a go at last. For AIOL means that Jonathan can now man-handle him and his people with impunity. The bell tolls .....

The tone and thrust of your comment denote lack of essential knowledge about the workings of the US. The President of Nigeria is only required constitutionally to present a budget and commend it to the NASS for approval/assent. The NASS are required to scrutinise the budget through their standing committees before assenting to it by a vote of the entire NASS. You are factually wrong to suggest in your timidity that US has not passed any budget in the preceding three years. Symphony007: this arguement is going no where as you have choosen to dwell in your echo chamber. You don't know what a budget is apparently that is why you could'nt understand the story i posted which clearly states that the u.s congress has'n passed a budget in 3 years. It has'nt passed a detailed document outlining revenue and expenditure in 3 years. It's only currently that paul ryan and patty murray have come up with a budget that is about passing the senate. Perhaps @Afam4eva was very sophisticated in his response to your simple question. Nigeria wants to be compared with the US, UK, Canada and the rest of EU. The president is not for IJAW, PDP or other interest groups. He is Mr. Nigeria. It is demeaning for Jonathan to read the budgetary provisions, which is normally done in the EU, including the UK by their respective ministers for Finance. He or she will have all the figures, and will answer cogent questions on the wherewithal of the provisions. This leaves the president out of the partisan element of this vital constitutional requirement. This is a step in the right direction. 'Coordinating Minister for the Economy' is an executive appellation from Jonathan which he is allowed to confer to improve efficiency and productivity. She is not being paid as the CME, etc. For a good measure, neither NL nor APC is in the constitution. If Jonathan has done anything wrong, NASS will have raised one or two issues along the lines. Pukkah: 1. A new nomenclature or title was created for her. That title is 'Coordinating Minister for the Economy'.
2. The new title is not supported by the Constitution.
3. On the basis of the new title, some people including yourself have described her as the 'defacto Prime Minister'. A few have even describe her as the 'defacto Vice President' or 'alpha and omega' of the Jonathan administration.
4. She's supposed to 'oversee' some Ministries but which Ministers are being overseen? Is doing more than she did during her first coming as Finance Minister?

He was the chairman of the editorial board of Guardian for many years up to his appointment. Being a doctorate is a big thing actually. It requires you to think before you speak amongst other things. The point of GEJ's speech is that Nigerian Politicians believe that Nigeria is their personal property to plunder. The presidency yesterday took another swipe at former president, Olusegun Obasanjo who last week, accused President Goodluck Jonathan of placing perceived political opponents under the watchful eyes of snipers, It told Obasanjo to show proof in that respect or shut up forever.

In the same vein, the seat of power warned the All Progressive Congress (APC) to be careful in making inciting statements and unfounded allegations against President Goodluck Jonathan or its members would be made to face charges of treason.

It implicitly told former President Olusegun Obsanjo who had last week alleged the existence of snipers against the president to boldly come forward and provide proof or remain silent forever as a coward he is.

Obasanjo had written an 18 paragraph letter alleging series of corrupt practices against President Jonathan.

But Special Adviser to the president on media and publicity, Dr. Reuben Abati noted in a statement yesterday said,

“President Jonathan is running a people’s government. He does not need any snipers. His legitimacy comes from the people. Those who are alleging the existence of snipers should step forward and provide the evidence or shut up forever and go down in history as spineless cowards, driven by sheer greed and indecency.

“We dismiss the APC’s call for the President’s impeachment as opportunistic, partisan and ill-motivated.

We call on patriots to make the necessary distinction between such reckless violations of civic duty and the urgent need to protect the integrity of the Nigerian nation against those who for selfish reasons have declared their readiness to stop at nothing”.

Abati described as reckless and irresponsible the call by the APC for the National Assembly to commence impeachment proceedings against the president.

He reminded the APC that as an opposition party which remains a minority “with doubtful credentials in the National Assembly, knows fully well that its attempt to hector and blackmail a Parliament dominated by loyal members of the President’s party, the PDP, into an impeachment process, will come to nothing”.

Threatening to prefer charges bordering on treason against members of the APC, Abati stated: “In this regard, we have noted the undisguised threat by the APC to foster public insurrection against the Federal Government if pending legal cases go against it. We urge Nigerians to take special note of this boastful indication of an intention to resort to lawlessness. The Presidency warns that the APC and any persons who make themselves its willing tools for the breach of public order and safety will be made to face the full sanctions of the law.

“Those who are threatening fire and brimstone should be ready for consequences of treasonable action. The APC’s false copy-cat allegation that 1, 000 snipers are being trained by the Jonathan Administration clearly shows that they are now in cahoots with some other elements who are bent on discrediting this administration and inciting the public against it”.

The presidential spokesman said ordinarily, the presidency wouldn’t have dignified the party’s spokesman, Alhaji Lai Mohammed’s “latest vituperations in the service of his paymasters with a response”.

He added, however, the presidency “thought it necessary to warn that the federal government will not standby idly and let the nation be plunged into unnecessary crises and political instability because of the desperation and apparent readiness of the APC spokesman and his gang of power-seeking desperadoes to sacrifice the well-being of the country on the altar of their selfish personal ambitions.

“The Presidency totally condemns the decision by Alhaji Mohammed and his party to move further beyond the bounds of honourable and acceptable political conduct with the senseless call for the impeachment of a President who continues to sincerely devote himself to the discharge of the sacred mandate freely given to him by Nigerians”, Abati noted.

Abati who wondered why the APC “has cavalierly embarked on this outrageous gambit, with scant regard for peace, order, security and political stability in the country” said it was “in furtherance of its dastardly and heinous strategy of over-heating the polity and working to cause public disaffection against the Jonathan Presidency with lies, false accusations and unjustifiable indictments ahead of the 2015 general elections.

“The emptiness and hollowness of the APC’s call for President Jonathan’s impeachment will be obvious to all objective and discerning Nigerians who read through the statement issued by Alhaji Mohammed today. It was long on self-serving rhetoric and falsehoods, but lacked a single clearly defined charge on the basis of which any plausible impeachment proceedings against the President can be initiated”, he added.

The statement made available to LEADERSHIP yesterday night further reads: “All that the APC could offer in justification of its absurd and hare-brained impeachment call was a rehash of its well-worn litany of baseless accusations against the President, including some for which culpability should be laid squarely at the doorsteps of its own leaders and some of their new friends.

“The Presidency also considers it utterly deplorable that the APC has, in its Machiavellian desperation to seize control of the Federal Government, recklessly assailed the integrity and honour of the Nigerian Judiciary in a callous attempt to pre-empt the outcome of the case legitimately brought against it and some of its new friends by the PDP.

“Alhaji Mohammed’s unscrupulous effort to drag the nation’s judiciary into its murky political warfare and his readiness to intimidate and blackmail members of the bench so as to secure a favourable outcome for his party in the pending case clearly shows that nothing is beyond the pale for him and the APC in pursuit of their quest for power.

“The Jonathan Administration does not need Lai Mohammed or the APC to remind it of its constitutional responsibility for the security and well-being of Nigerians. The President will continue to do his utmost best to achieve positive national transformation in all areas in spite of efforts by the opposition to thwart or disparage the work of his administration.

President Goodluck Jonathan, on Sunday, looked at the qualities of politicians in the country, including himself, and concluded that not a single one could be regarded as great.
He was speaking during a memorial service organized at the Aso Villa Chapel, Abuja, in honour of the late South African leader, Nelson Mandela, who died last week Thursday at the age of 95.
The president observed that it would be easier for the camel to pass through the eye of the needle than for Nigerian politicians to be truly great in the mould of the late African statesman.
According to Jonathan, “if you listen to those of us politicians in Nigeria from all political parties, I am here, Senate President is here, the Deputy Speaker is here, incidentally, we are all from PDP (Peoples Democratic Party), but if you listen to those of us who are politicians, from all the political parties, the way we talk, some of us (ourselves) see as if Nigeria is (our) personal bedroom they have control over.
If you read the papers, listen to the radio and television, some of us even see ourselves as if we are tin gods. We intimidate, we threaten, we show hate in our communication. These are not the virtues of great men. They are certainly the vices of tiny men.
Sometimes when I listen to politicians, the ones older than me, my contemporaries, and even the younger ones, I come to the painful conclusion that it is probably easier for the camel to pass through the eye of the needle than for a politician to be truly great.
I always look at the word great with some kind of spectrum, because making a great name is not just enough. You could see it, especially in the political circle. We have so many great names that are dictators, with repressive and oppressive governments that sent a lot of people to detention. Some people become extremely notorious, but they have made great names and so to be truly great is key.”
The President who said he never met Mandela before his death, described him as a great man who everyone needed to emulate in order to build a better society.
He observed that the late former South African president was a very humble and rare leader, who had a forgiving spirit and selflessly served his country.
“Nelson Mandela was a rare character that those of us who are politicians need to learn from, so that we will imbibe some of these traits and do better for our country,” he said.
He said Mandela did well as a politician, as he showed that one could be a politician and still be truly great by putting the interest of his nation and the people first before his own interest.
Jonathan explained that the reason Nigeria was celebrating Mandela was because of the strong relationship that existed between both countries and the key role Nigeria played during the anti-apartheid struggle.
Noting that Mandela remained the symbol of the struggle, Jonathan added “we saw the pain of South Africans as our pain. We saw their struggle as our own struggle and when apartheid collapsed, we saw their victory as our own victory.
That is why when the Madiba, the symbol of the apartheid struggle, passed on, we believe South Africans are feeling the pains and sorrow but, at the same time, they are celebrating Nelson Mandela and we believe Nigeria must join them and support them.”
It turns out that just as the philosopher Fukiyama predicted in his book:

One of the unintended consequences of President Jonathan’s “BTI” (Brutal Truth Initiative) is that it has caught on like wild fire. The bandwagon (or domino) effect was spontaneous.

To be the President of Nigeria requires guile and fastidiousness. OBJ has all these and more. OBJ is not mad. He is a civilian politician and a military politician. He knows that money moves people. He understands the Nigerian psyche. OBJ promised the NORTH eight unmitigated years after his tenure, but providence intervened. He wants the NORTH to reclaim their 'MANDATE'. But his best laid plans to manipulate Nigeria until his death has not worked out. Because Jonathan is not playing according to the script that was drafted for him. OBJ and his cohorts (including the NASS speaker and most of the Northern Governors) have a number of options. All these point to eliminating Jonathan, either physically, politically, etc. Tambuwal has considered impeachment, but he is afraid that what happened to Rotimi Amaechi will happen to him as well. Jonathan uncharacteristically has beefed up his security details, got the best economic team in place, etc, but missing out on a good PR outfit. All these sabre rattling by his detractors will not yield fruit. He does not eat apple or oranges from well wishers, which has further frustrated his detractors. OBJ must beware. The bell is tolling for him .... Would Nigerians give OBJ a similar funeral to Madiba next year or so when he shuffles on ...? Who is going to inherit all his global mansions when he succumbs to the grim reaper? That should exercise him more than the other gist..

If you believe in democracy, then OBJ like you and I must have our say. As long as it is not inciting, call to armed violence, or against one of the provisions of the amended constitution of the Federal Republic. OBJ has his interests. Jonathan has his interests. SO do you and other Nigerians. The issues raised ignorantly by OBJ is being addressed. Tomorrow at 10 am Nigeria time, the CBN, NNPC, DPR, FIRS and Ministry of Finance are meeting at Abuja to reconcile their numbers. Hopefully, Sanusi will come out with humble pie in his face. On the issue of cronyism (populating the government with Ijaw people), OBJ is disingenuous. He did not provide any data on this. On all the other issues (including Hamza Mustapha), Jonathan only maintains one of the tripod of our democracy, namely the executive. He is not constitutionally allowed to interfere with NASS or the Judiciary. OBJ panders to the Nigeria he knows that dwell more on rumours, innuendos and character assassinations (No smoke without fire ilk). Sanusi and OBJ are unhappy with Jonathan's increasing global profile. They want him to be a malleable 'gentleman' politician. But he is playing a blinder. He is effectively using the structures that OBJ put in place to preside effectively. If the events of this week prove that Jonathan has not been corrupt, OBJ's reputation will be finished. His legacy will be posthumous investigation of his pillaging.

Successive Nigerian governments has never functioned optimally since the 70's. In most ministries, agencies and parastatals, staff with-hold information from other agencies and or bodies. This is caused by the structural defect of all personnel trying to report to the ultimate head or permanent secretary or even ministers. This has meant that information, no matter how trivial is 'secreted' and the gaps in information develops feeding jealousy and bitterness. Alas, the governor is not in loop of what goes on in the revenues of the country. It is not a big problem, if he had not fallen out with the CME, Dr Iweala who has all these information could have answered his questions diligently. Problem is that Sanusi claims that it is he that is saving Nigeria. CME, Madueke and even Jonathan does not think so. Of course there are leakages of crude export earnings through the people that work there. Sanusi has to eat a humble pie and make up with other heads of ministries and agencies/parastatals, otherwise he will continue to be a lame duck CBN governor. People in Abuja are counting down to his departure very shortly. They are looking at who is going to replace him ....

I have seen Obasanjo and Jonathan together twice this year. In February this year in London, during OBJ foundation Launch. Again this summer at Abuja. They seemed very close. EFCC is corrupt like the NPF. There is no 'clean' Police man in Nigeria. I stand to be corrected. However we like to think that it is Nigeria Police Force.
