LAGOS – Lagos was practically shut down yesterday in celebration of National Leader of the opposition Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) and former governor of Lagos State, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed, on his attaining the age of 60 even as President Goodluck Jonathan congratulated him on leading an “exceptionally eventful and fulfilling life.”
As early as 8 a.m, Lagos residents trooped out in large numbers to Teslim Balogun Stadium, Surulere, to be part of Tinubu’s birthday anniversary.
Lagos State Secretariat, Alausa, government parastatals, agencies and major markets were virtually shut down, as most civil servants, prominent Nigerians, traders, well-wishers, friends, professionals and party faithful thronged the stadium.
Among the dignitaries who showered encomiums on the celebrator were President Jonathan, who was represented by Minister for Niger Delta, Mr. Godsday Orubebe, and Presidential Adviser on Inter-Party Affairs, Senator Ben Obi; Vice-President of Ghana, Mr. John Mahama; Senate President, Senator David Mark; governors of the Southwest states, including Babatunde Fashola of Lagos; Ibikunle Amosun, Ogun State; Kayode Fayemi, Ekiti State; Rauf Aregbesola, Osun State; Adams Oshiomhole, Edo State; and Abiola Ajumobi, Oyo State.
Others include the first civilian governor of Lagos State, Alhaji Lateef Jakande and Senator Chris Ngige.
Jonathan hails Tinubu
President Jonathan, in a three-paragraph personally-signed letter, he wrote on behalf of his family, the government and people of Nigeria, said: “Given the symbolism of the attainment of the landmark age of 60, especially in a life such as yours that has been exceptionally eventful and fulfilling, there is great cause for thanksgiving to Almighty God.
I join your family, and numerous friends and associates in thanking God for your life and praying that He continues to guide, strengthen and prosper you in the many more years of accomplishment ahead of you. Please, accept my warm felicitations and personal regards as you celebrate a very special birthday.”
At the event, Mahama, who was represented by the Deputy Chief of Staff of Ghana, Mr. Alex Zedaphia, described Tinubu as a selfless leader whose quality was worth emulating. He noted that all through his tenure as governor of Lagos State, Tinubu showed to many that his coming to office was to liberate his people from their challenges.
According to him, “all these qualities you possessed showed that you were ready for Nigerians when you assumed office. I know that one day perhaps, Nigerians will be ready for you.”
He is an icon— Mark
Also, speaking at the ceremony, tagged “Prayers and Tributes for Tinubu at 60”, the Senate President, David Mark, said politicians and well- meaning Nigerians were celebrating Tinubu for providing formidable opposition for democracy to thrive in the country.
Mark, who was represented by the former governor of Yobe State, Alhaji Bukar Ibrahim, said: “We are celebrating him because he is an icon that has performed wonderfully. Sixty years is an amazing time to take stock of who one is.
“You have demonstrated audacity. Your legacy shall be maintained and consolidated. Your role in your party shows the beauty of opposition.”
He is a wonderful husband —Oluremi
Senator Oluremi Tinubu, on behalf of the immediate family members, described her husband as a consummate and faithful family man.
She said: “He is a wonderful husband and our relationship makes me to love the Lord more. People will wonder why we are in a stadium for celebration. It is not out of any political intent.
“He is a lover of so many people. We are celebrating the man who over the years touched many lives. Since the time we got married he has touched everyone in different ways.” As ACN governors took their turns to speak, the host, Governor Fashola, who chose to speak on Tinubu as public servant, said Tinubu’s greatest achievement was perhaps the charting of the developmental course of Lagos.
He recalled his time as Chief of Staff to Tinubu, from 2002 to 2006, saying that the filth which littered the streets of Lagos at that time was cleaned in six months due to the sheer determination of Tinubu who, he said, motivated his cabinet members to share his dream of a Lagos free of filth.
He said: “He was the arrowhead of that paddle of change, a man who keeps reinventing himself. Surely, the last has not been heard from him.”
Aregbesola on Tinubu Governor Aregbesola of Osun State described the celebrant as an enigma who re-defined Nigeria’s political firmament like a colossus. Aregbesola also recalled his period in Tinubu’s cabinet while he was governor of Lagos State, saying he used the period to mentor people who have today become leaders in their own right.
Aregbesola said: “He is a leader of leaders; in his time as governor of Lagos State, he chose his cabinet on merit. His cabinet in his first term was the most compact and most performing in Nigeria at that time. |

Actually there are none. Reason. . . the dominant culture of the North does not recognize any socio-economic abuse on the less priviledged based on either gender or social status. It is agreeable with them and embedded in their mores and religious backgrounds. So. . .what is there to fight for EXCEPT oil derivatives? Think of Saudi Arabia or Yemen. The only kinds of 'activists' you can find in such places, just like you could have in the North are socio-political terrorists and distabilizers of domestic and global polities. Boko Harams! Nothing more. |

kutchs: @Calloti, dont seem to understand what you are on about. Whats ur grouse with Ndigbo? Tell u wot win or lose NOI has gained the recognition and attention of the world in a way u and generations of ur pple can never. If u were relevant and important you would have been nominated in her place. Russia‘s support of Kim is not enof reason to insult Ndigbo who have received serious mention all accross the globe. Both Nzeogwu and Ojukwu lived and died great men even in death their names still ring bells but am not sure that can be said about a nonentity like you. Haba! Please, where did I insult Ndi-Igbo people in my posts? I was only making fun of the sessionist theories with the current sentiments on NL and in Nigeria at present. This has more to do with Nigeria. Do you wish her to go as a Nigerian or as a Biafran? Thank God she was nominated. Not by YOU Ndi-Igbos. The Western world made her who she is. . . NOT AFRICA OR NIGERIA. I pray she runs for any office in Nigeria without appointment from 'God fathers' and let us see HOW MANY OF YOUR IGBO people will support her. She only looks good because she has been recognized OUTSIDE NIGERIA. That is my point. Thank you. |
Politics › Re: African Dies In US Immigration Custody In Colorado. by Callotti: 8:36am On Apr 14, 2012 |
jookco: Authorities say a man from Gabon (ga-BOHN) has died in while in the custody of U.S. immigration officials in Colorado. Immigration and Customs Enforcement says 46-year-old Evalin-Ali Mandza died Thursday at a suburban Denver hospital, where he was taken after complaining of chest pains. Immigration spokesman Carl Rusnok says a coroner will determine the cause of death. Rusnok says Mandza entered the U.S. in 1996 on a visitor visa, which is usually valid for a matter of months. ICE detained him in October after he was released from a Colorado jail. Rusnok did not know why Mandza had been jailed but said it wasn’t a violent crime. Rusnok says Gabon officials have been notified. ICE says Mandza is the seventh detainee to die in its custody since Oct. 1.
Www.africagist.com When the detainees are unhealthy nko? How can an old man that of 46 years-old be illegal in the US. Someone born before the first Goh Cheng Leong (Geograpy), Holderness And Lambert(Chemistry), and Nikkon(Physics) text-books were first published in the whole of Africa? Well, let us wait for the coroner's report. . .if we ever get a hold of it. Africans should stop taking these kinds of risks. It is not worth being illegal in ANY foreign country. Haba! |

bakila: When add the fact that everyday everywhere most of her kinsmen are clamouring for the break up of Nigeria, her minus increase. Is better to have a citizen of the USA than a former and future biafran as World Bank President! That is absolutely correct. Unfortunately. . . the Western world is always on top of Nigerian affairs. Who wants any candidate from a country filled with disgruntled sessionists AND TERROR CELLS? To sponsor Boko Haram or Biafra with the blessing of the World Bank is not an option. Once again. . .Igbo people shoot down their own rising star by their actions. Shame. First Nzeogwu. . .then Ojukwu. . .now NOI. Sad. So, will she be going as a Nigerian or a Biafran? |

Boko Haram is a threat to Nigeria even if you break up. Some ethnic groups will still team up behind your backs to form allies with them. Be prepared to be starved to death again. I am sure you don't want Kwashiokor to ravish Southern Nigeria again. You better deal with Boko Haram now and let Nigeria continue to remain one. FOR YOUR OWN GOOD! |

How does this help the current situation in Nigeria? The greatest threat to Nigerian now is Boko Haram. The Northern army was able to squash Biafra. . . .with all other parts of Nigeria. It is time for YOU Southerners to return the favor. . .using the same military. The world is watching to see if you really qualified for the independence that was given to you on a platter of gold WITHOUT BLOOD-SHED. Like Biafra, like Boko Haram. Any part of Nigeria that is allowed to break away REMAINS A THREAT TO ALL OTHER REGIONS. Biafra or Boko Haram. . .SHOULD BE DEALT WITH MERCILESSSLY! |
