According to the latest Kaspersky Lab Security Bulletin, the volume of spam emails in 2015 decreased to 55.28% of overall email traffic – a fall of 11.48% on the previous year. The significant slump in spam emails can be attributed to the increasing popularity of legal advertising platforms on social networks, coupon clipping service and etc. Among other trends identified in the Kaspersky Lab spam report are the following. Over three quarters (79%) of all emails sent were less than 2kb, which shows a steady decrease in email size for spam campaigns over the past few years. Financial institutions such as banks, payment systems and online shops were attacked most often with phishing emails (34.33%, a rise of 5.59%). In 2015, cyber-criminals continued to send out fake emails from mobile devices and notifications from mobile apps containing malware or advertising messages. New tactics included fraudsters spreading malware in the form of .apk (Android executive files) and .jar (ZIP archives containing a programme in Java). In addition, cyber-criminals masked a mobile encryption Trojan behind a file containing updates for Flash Player. After launching, the malware encrypted images, documents and video files stored on the device with users receiving a message telling them to pay a fee in order to decrypt the files. “The increased use of mobile devices in our everyday life to exchange messages and data, as well as access and control bank accounts, has also resulted in increased exploitation opportunities for cyber-criminals. Mobile malware and fraudulent spam is becoming more popular and efforts to dupe victims are becoming more sophisticated year on year, with the emergence of apps that can be used by cyber-criminals both directly (for sending out spam, including malicious spam) and indirectly (via phishing emails). Mobile device users therefore need to be on their guard and remain vigilant, as cyber-criminal activities in this area are only likely to increase, along with our reliance on devices”, warns Daria Loseva, Spam Analysis Expert at Kaspersky Lab. The US remained the biggest source of spam (15.2%), with second place taken by Russia (6.15%) and China making way for Vietnam in third spot (6.12%). Germany was the biggest victim with 19.06% of spam attacks – a 9.84% increase on 2014, followed by Brazil at 7.64% which posted a 4.09% increase and moved up from sixth place in 2014. Russia moved up to third place from eighth, an increase of 3.06% to 6.03% of all spam attacks in 2015. In Africa, Source: http://www.oddytech.com.ng/2016/02/if-you-are-reading-this-with-your.html |

A device called Freedom 251 surfaced yesterday and it was touted as the world’s cheapest smartphone. The phone sparked people’s interest primarily because of the price. The specs are worthy of a hundred bucks device but the information on Freedom 251 website says the phone will be sold for less than $4. Just 24 hours after the news broke, things have changed and the Freedom 251 we saw yesterday is different from what we have on the website at the moment. Unlike the image seen yesterday, Apart from the round home key found on the iPhone, the general design speaks Apple and as a matter of fact, the software has iOS icons. According to HindustanTimes, the phone is riddled with problems and the device may be off the market if Apple decides to go after it. The device infringes on Apple’s copyright. It seems the company behind the phone is involved in some kind of deceit. source: http://www.oddytech.com.ng/2016/02/the-worlds-cheapest-smartphone-is.html#more

According to independent web analytics company, StatCounter, Microsoft’s newest PC operating system, Windows 10 has for the first time surpassed its predecessor, Windows 8.1 in terms of global usage, in the month of January 2016. The firm’s analytics arm, StatCounter Global Stats finds that Windows 10 hit 13.7% in terms of desktop Internet usage compared to 11.7% for Windows 8.1, though it is still some way behind Windows 7, which represented 46.7% of Internet usage worldwide in January. Worldwide usage of Windows 10 after six calendar months (since August) was 13.7% compared to 5.0% for Windows 8 and 13.5% for Windows 7 at their initial half year stage. He added, “However, there remains a lot of loyalty to Windows 7 and it will be interesting to see if it becomes the equivalent of XP which, 14 years after launch, refuses to lie down and still has an 8% global share in terms of desktop internet use.” StatCounter analysis of the first six months finds that Windows 10 usage is greater than Windows 8 and Windows 7 over the same time period globally, in the US and UK. Windows 10 is now at 15.7% in the US and overtook 8.1 in December. Windows 7 still leads the US on 40.5%. In the UK, Windows 10 is powering ahead with 22.4% in January compared to 12.5% for 8.1. Windows 10 overtook 8.1 in October. Windows 7 represents 36.8% of internet usage in the UK. For individual country statistics, check here. The Nigerian Communications Commission is considering a framework for the regulation of over-the-top services in the Nigerian telecoms market. Over-the-top services, otherwise known as OTT, are services carried over the networks, delivering value to customers, but without any carrier service provider being involved in planning, selling, provisioning, or servicing them. OTT services are offered through Internet communication. In Nigeria, the most common OTT services are WhatsApp messenger, BlackBerry Messenger, Facebook, and Skype which are classified under social media applications. In other words, telecom operators such as MTN, Etisalat, Glo, and Airtel lack direct control or influence over WhatsApp messenger, BBM, Facebook or Skype. Internet telephony and live streaming are also part of OTT services. The growth of OTT services is encouraged by the access to 3G and 4G networks which offer mobile broadband and high speed IP data. A report, ‘An Overview of Provision of Over The Top [OTT] Services’ published recently by the Policy, Competition & Economic Analysis Department of the Nigerian Communications Commission, says OTT services were becoming a threat to the traditional telephone network operators. This development, the report said, is a global issue. The threat, according to the NCC report, comes from the fact that Internet telephony is not only cheap, and free in some cases, but it also offers many features previously unavailable with telephones, therefore making it more attractive to consumers. And unlike the traditional telephone network operator, the operators of Internet telephony don’t pay tolls for their services. Besides, the report said since telecom operators such as MTN, Etisalat, Glo and Airtel do not have control over WhatsApp, BBM, Facebook and the rest of the social media applications, they (the telecom operators) do not generate revenues from services offered through these applications. The report said, “Many traditional telecom service providers are of the opinion that traditional telephony and SMS revenues are under threat from newer, IP based alternatives like WhatsApp, Skype, Viber etc. “Similarly, third party web content and social networking companies such as Google and Facebook are increasingly generating huge revenues and driving high levels of data traffic which ride on the broadband networks of traditional telecom operators’. “To further worsen this issue, the traditional operators still have to make significant investments in upgrading their networks to handle the increasing volume of data generated by the same providers of OTT services. “Most traditional telephone network service providers therefore argue that unless there is a revenue flow to them from such services, they do not have an incentive to continue to maintain or upgrade the networks,” the report said. The NCC also believed there is need for some kind of regulation because OTT services portend security risks to the country. “Because VoIP relies on your Internet connection, it may be vulnerable to many of the same problems that face computers,” the report said. “Attackers may be able to perform activities such as intercepting communications, eavesdropping, taking control of phones, making fraudulent calls from an account, conducting effective phishing attacks by manipulating one’s caller ID, and causing service to crash.” SOURCE: http://www.oddytech.com.ng/2016/02/nigerian-govt-plans-to-regulate-use-of.html |

Hi friends, our favourite chatting app WhatsApp just secretly added a little update to their android app. For those of us who've been complaining that they have more than 100 colleagues, classmates, friends, etc that they would have liked to add to a WhatsApp group, now you can do so. Yeah, that's true. WhatsApp just increased the number maximum number of members a group can contain from 100 members to 256 members. For those who are always in doubt, simply click on the "group info" of any WhatsApp group you belong to and you'll that the participants is now something like "100 out of 256". And in case yours is still showing 100 as d maximum number of participants in a group, then you know it's time to upgrade your WhatsApp to the latest version. That's it for this update. What do you guys think about this new update by WhatsApp? For any questions, just ask using the comment box below. An aircraft belonging to Bristow Helicopter crashed on Wednesday while heading to Lagos from Port Harcourt, Rivers state capital. Adebayo Kehinde, public relations officer of Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), confirmed the incident to TheCable but did not give details. Efforts to reach Yakubu Dati, spokesman of the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), on the development did not yield any result, as he neither answered his calls nor responded to a text message. The Accident Investigative Bureau (AIB) said there were nine passengers and two crew members on board the ill-fated aircraft... If you’re an online publisher, you aren’t going to like this bit of news: As of Sunday night, Samsung has added ad-blocking software to all of its Android devices, reports theGuardian. The software, which is built in to the default Samsung web browser that ships on its devices, automatically blocks ads from appearing on web pages. The new ad-blocking software was added via a software update. The news of Samsung’s ad blocker comes just months after Apple enabled support for controversial content blockers in its iOS 9 software, which runs on most iPhones and iPads. In iOS 9, users can download ad-blocking software (also known as content blockers) so they can stop seeing ads in web pages while surfing via Apple’s Safari browser. Apple’s move to add content blockers was seen as a proxy shot across the bow at its largest competitor, Google, which makes most of its money from selling ads. However, many web publishers said the real people that Apple’s content blockers will hurt are small publishers themselves. Apple’s content blockers have also caused headaches for online retailers. While it seems a bit obvious why Apple would enable ad blockers on iOS 9, it's a surprise that Samsung has enabled them given that Samsung is one of Google’s largest hardware partners and the company’s Android smartphones account for 22% of all smartphones sold in 2015. What’s even more surprising is that Samsung has added ad blocking right into the default web browser itself. Unlike with iOS 9, users do not need to download third-party content blockers to remove ads from web pages. As the Guardian notes, until Apple introduced content blockers in iOS 9 the amount of people using ad blockers on mobile devices was relatively low. But since ad blocker became available on iPhones, ad blocking has become almost as popular on mobiles as on desktops. With Samsung now baking ad blocking into its default browser, it's possible mobiles could overtake desktops as far as ad blocking is concerned. That could be a big worry to online publishers considering that mobile Internet usage has rocketed past desktop Internet usage. However, many point out that ad blocker use wouldn’t be as extensive if advertisers weren't so aggressive with their advertising methods–-a point the advertising trade association Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) conceded in a blog post right after the introduction of content blockers on iOS 9. "We have let the fine equilibrium of content, commerce, and technology get out of balance in the open web," the IAB said in a blog post. "We had, and still do have, a responsibility to educate the business side, and in some cases to push back. We lost sight of our social and ethical responsibility to provide a safe, usable experience for anyone and everyone wanting to consume the content of their choice." One thing is certain though, people will continue to place ads on web pages and it's left to see if other OEMs will follow suit with what samsung is doing.
