Thanks for your honest view, I'll look at going to a registry next month. Please, can we do it at ANY registry? Or must it be Ikoyi?

Also, does that mean my partner would have to do a change of name something before we can proceed?
it can be done at any registry.i used my local govt marriage registry certificate and I know some people who had also used non Ikoyi marriage certificate.

Very very Long Post Alert!!!

Hi Guys,

This is our landing story... its a little bizarre so please bear with me.

We left Nigeria on 14th April. Our flight was for 1:40 Saturday afternoon, we went with 4 big boxes and two hand luggage. The check-in bags were all overweight so there was a brief period of craziness where my mother and my wife and her sisters had to open up the bags and jettison all the extra crap they had packed all in the name of "load". I tagged all the bags and we proceeded to passport control and immigration. I only parted with 1k by way of "roger"(thank God). I was ready for them and thought we would be forced to part with more but maybe they were in a good mood that day...Fast forward to the flight proper...uninteresting. We flew Ethiopian Airlines and I must say that the food was funny. Always rice rice rice at a point we got tired of eating rice and started eating the fried snail we had arranged from home. The plan was to finish it before we landed before customs would seize it. We got to Addis Ababa and went to connect to our next flight to Dublin. Halfway into the flight, the pilot comes on the PA and announces that we'll be turning back to Addis. There was a technical issue with the plane and the guys in Dublin did not have the equipment for maintenance. You could hear the passengers protesting but not for too long, I mean, who wan die? The way I saw it...better to turn around than for us to crash. simple. Little did i know that would be the least of my worries. We got back to addis ababa at about 3am and had to wait for another plane to arrive from Tel Aviv. The plane finally came at about 5:15 am and we started the second missionary journey. We arrived Dublin without any other issue and waited for about an hour while the plane refueled. Took off again to Toronto without incident. Went to arrivals where we were stamped in. Then proceeded to the immigration queue. Didn’t spend too long on that queue either (about 15 mins) a lady officer attended to us. She was both friendly and helpful. She welcomed us to Canada and asked if we had commited any crimes and if we had been denied visa to any other country…the usual. Then we went to pick up our bags at the carousel. I waited and waited for one of my bags but when it became apparent that it wasn’t coming we lodged a complaint at the counter, they told me I would get my bag in 24-48hours…I’m still waiting for it. All the foodstuff and my wife’s things arrived. Only my own bag no show. E pain me. Thank God my wife thought to put some of my things in her own bag while she was packing or I would still be wearing my travelling clothes. Anyways, we proceeded to customs. While on that queue, I started checking what they were asking other people for. It seemed there wasn’t any rhyme or rhythm to their search/questions. One angry looking female officer unceremoniously binned some items brought in by one man…another man just asked questions about peoples dogs and what not. My wife started praying that we shouldn’t be attended to by that woman. Me sef I prayed. You need to see the huge bin. The man didn’t even complain he just smiled and walked away. It came to our turn and we were attended to by a young female officer who welcomed us again to Canada, she noted how tired we looked and just asked us how much cash we had with us, took the paper issued by the lost baggage people and waved us on our way. The main airport terminal was very busy. people were stranded because of the weather .we raced between terminal 1 and 3 trying to see if we could get a flight out to Montreal that night. No such luck.We had to sleep at the airport that night. The cold ehn…hmmm,I cannot talk about that one. there are just no words. Air Canada had grounded their flights so the lady at the counter advised us to go by train. She was also very helpful and told us many people had already taken that option. So we booked our train seats for the following morning. From UPE to Union Station in Toronto and then via ViaRail to Ottawa and then Montreal. No be small journey but we got to see the area so all na adventure. We finally arrived at the airbnb here at about 5pm yesterday paid the taxi man about 50dollars from downtown Montreal to Laval where the airbnb is. The airbnb is actually smaller than it appears in pictures. I no know say oyibo dey play wayo sef but it is still worth the price and extremely clean. We have the entire place to ourselves(it’s a 2bedder @ $770,then again, its Laval). Our host is very helpful and responds to all our enquiries as
congrats.may cannyland favor u.

Thanks.

Routine questions were:
- Have you ever been convicted of a criminal/offence
- Have you ever been refused entry to Canada, or required to leave Canada?
- Do you have any other family members other than the ones listed (on your COPR)?
- Has the configuration of your family changed since being issued the COPR?

All these questions are listed on the COPR though, they read them out, wrote down the answers, and asked us to sign against the answers.
thank u

Hello Nairaland Fam,

Landed in Toronto 3 days ago.

***FLIGHT***
Flew KLM. There was some issue at the time of boarding regarding excess hand luggage, but we survived. No excess check-in luggage - we had two bags of 23kg each.

Flight duration was about 6 hrs to Amsterdam, 4 hrs layover, and 7 hrs to Toronto. Landed 11AM.

Point to note: KLM weighs your hand luggage before you board (all your bags are placed on the scale and must not exceed 12Kg, ie, back pack plus any other bag together)

***LANDING***
Landing experience was okay.

One thing has changed though - there is no longer a need to fill the landing card. When you land, you go to a computer and fill in your landing details + any thing to declare, and you get a print out which you will eventually show to customs.

We had our passports checked and proceeded to the immigration officers who collected our COPRs (both copies), asked a few routine questions and asked us to sit and wait. In about 15 mins time, our names were called and we collected our copies (one copy each) all signed and stamped and ready to go.

Next, we proceeded to Service Canada to get our SIN. This took a while, about one hour - mainly due to crowd - and we were off to pick our bags. We got our bags and were directed to customs.

Customs asked how much we had in hand, and collected two copies of our "Goods Accompanying list", We stated that we had no additional goods to follow. They didn't check our bags 'since we declared what we were carrying - meat, fish, etc'. After a few mins (10 - 15mins), we were issued a 'receipt' for the goods accompanying, and we were welcomed to Canada and ushered in.

We got a taxi outside to take us to our Airbnb in North York (taxi cost CAD59). That's where we are now. Got bank accounts opened, and got mobile numbers. The welcoming weather has not been the best, but hey, it's Canada... cold is synonymous with Canada.

Point to note: Change your USD to CAD in the airport, the taxis won't accept USD conversion. They will however accept the same cmount whether it is USD or CAD, so if your bill is say CAD 50, they will gladly accept USD 50, but then you will be losing.

***WHAT NOW?***

Now looking for apartments, and the credit score is a real downer.

Anybody who can help with alternatives, info on available 2 b/r apartments in Toronto, agents that are willing to consider newcomers, or general tips would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
congrats.wishing u d best in Canada.pls if I may ask,what were d routine questions asked

[quote author=ugoiyke79e post=66311061]Hello from the other side....
Sorry I have been away so long...
Sorry I have a very long gist for u guys....
Congrats to every ITA/PPR/VOH/Landing gist/New jobs gusts that came in in my absence.

God bless us all and may it end in praise.

LANDING GIST

I have nothing to say but that I am so grateful to God.
My story isn't complete even at today but soon and very soon, it shall be.

The call to migrate to Canada started from ma mum in 2013....

The vision to migrate to Canada started following a reminder by my mum in june 2015.

The works started when we began studying d entire EE system/process in July 2015.

The race started when we took the first leap by paying for ECA by WES(for DH) and MCC(for me)

Wrote first IELTS may 2016...L7.5/R8/S7.5/W7
CRS 382.
Wrote 2nd IELTS August 2016 L9/R7.5/S7/W6.5
I didn't bother checking d CRS .
I immediately requested a remark(EOR for reading, listening and speaking.) on 13sept 2016....
It took approx 14weeks ..
I was able to calmly wait it out cos draw cut off was in d high 460s....
I got an EOR upgrade on 28th Dec 2016.
Speaking increased to 7.5, writing increased to 7 ....reading unchanged.

Now time to swim....I made some mistakes while changing d IELTS scores...
Next thing I got a mail dat my profile had become ineligible....
I just tire. I abandoned d profile as crs was still too high. I considered waiting for its to add his masters...it will only add 2 marks and still keep us below 450.

Late January 2017 crs started falling and I quickly created another profile and entered pool 24th January 2017

February 8 2017 crs crashed to 447....I was near. Nearly cannot kill a bird.
February 22 cut off was 441. I got in on 443.

document gathering, submission, anxiety in d waiting time...etc. all those are now history .

PPR came 103 days later on July 24th.
Visa came in August I think 28th.
Tickets bought October 10...
Preparations, resignations, clearance sales, severance, etc wasn't just easy.

congrats ugoikye79e.may God favour u in canny land.
concerning POF,would taking a bank statement along suffice for entry?we do not intend taking over 10k dollars as cash when land.hope it is OK ?

Glory be to God!!! My Father and my Redeemer...

This journey started Jan 2017 when I wrote IELTS and got (9,8.5,7.5,7) in LSRW in one sitting and I was like wow by June 2017 I’ll be in Canada (LOL).

But ECA did me strong thing, getting my LL.B transcript took about 4months as some years of my result was missing. It was not even funny at all. Lucky for me, I live in the town where I schooled so every week I’ll go to follow up. Sometimes even twice in the week... Eventually we had to go to my faculty to manually retrieve result from handwritten mark sheets submitted by the lecturers as at 2003/2004... imagine the pile of dust and all... But after 4 months we got finally sorted out the compilation of Transcript and sent to WES. All the while my foreign MBA had been evaluated (I did not know I could just do highest qualification only).

My ECA came in July 2017. I quickly dived into the pool... got ITA and submitted August 13th. August 30th I got ADR for Travel History Form, I submitted and the next day my application was cancelled for not including UK PCC.

I went back into the pool on the 1st of Sept and applied for UK PCC. I got ITA first week in September and submitted 18th September 2017. See my timeline below:

AOR- 18th September 2017
NA2- 2nd October 2017
FTD- 7th November 2017
IP2/ADR-16th February 2018 (Height &Eye colour and Bio Data pages)
PPR mail - 26th February 2018

Passport sent to Accra - 26th February 2018
Received in Accra - 28th February 2018
PUM- 12th March 2018
Approved - 13th March 2018
COPR- 15th March 2018
Left Nigeria - 20th March 2018
Arrived Alberta- 21st March 2018

Some highlights of my Application (major thanks to the wealth of information shared on this platform):
*the 2nd attempt was more straight forward as I moved spouse’s Experiences to personal history
*i uploaded documents for only jobs I was claiming points for, moved the others to personal experience (In previous application I uploaded letters for all previous jobs cumulatively over 9years and my present one which is self owned Firm)
* my LOE was one page and more straight forward (the first had over 4pages)
* I notarized the letter from spouse saying money in his account was for our immigration purpose and that I had access to it. Basically the entire POF was spouse’s.
*i added ielts, ECA to education certificate (I dint do this for the first).

I give all the glory to God, what started like a dream has become a reality... I don’t even know how to express my gratitude... my application has its lows and delays but through it all, my Visa officer was like an angel. He replied all status enquires politely and continually gave me hope through it all...

Also, please if you are on LinkedIn, ensure your profile is updated and accurate just as you filled in your e-APR. when i was told that my background check was ongoing, I noticed my profile was checked by “ControlRisks” a UK based firm that also handles immigration security, travel security, etc. I doubt this was a coincidence.

Finally, don’t be afraid to reach out to your Visa Office with any enquires, requests or plea as the case may be. I needed my Passport stamping expedited and I wrote to London after getting PPR, and honestly it’s the best decision ever made... My Visa Officer took it upon himself to ensure Accra stamped the passports in a timely fashion...He would even mail me from time to time to ask if it had been stamped and eventually mailed to tell me it was stamped and would be delivered same week... hence why I got PUM before approval (Please don’t abuse this privilege except you have genuine reasons for it, so we don’t ruin the chances of others with real emergencies)

The kind of favour I experienced through it all, it was definitely God at work.

I made some amazing friends too especially @bigfido and @mrsda. Thanks also to @feygbe and all those in the August and September WhatsApp group, the LVO group as well as the Post-PPR groups... the journey would have been incomplete without you all.

May God bless you all and may all our dreams and aspirations become valid!!!

One love!!!
congrats.wishing u the best

Okay, where and how do i start celebrating and thanking God for His faithfulness and favor. I remember prior to my arrival in Calgary, i was discouraged from pursing a career in HR, as not being a lucrative career with little or no job opportunities in Canada. I was determined to follow my passion and dreams of becoming a world renowned Human Resources Consultant and i wasn't backing out.

On arrival in Calgary, i took advantage of one of the Government bridging programs , Corporate Readiness Training Program, a very good and informative one. I learnt how to write my resume the Canadian style, soft skills, interview preparation, and LinkedIn profile update. Then again, i was discouraged by the program instructor not to venture into HR profession yet as my little over 3months experience in HR will not be impressive to any employer. I contacted various recruitment agencies, and to God be be the glory, i landed my first contract job before the end of the program in a Multinational Investment Bank in Downtown Calgary. I continued my job search while working there. Lo and behold, one very good afternoon, i got a LinkedIn invite from the Director of Human Resources in one of the Oil and Gas servicing company in downtown, i accepted his request and he sends me a message, saying, "Hello, i am in need of HR Administrative Assistant in my company, would you mind sending me your resume for review". I quickly sent him my resume. Few minutes later, i received a call from the HR Manager scheduling an interview. I attended the interview two days later and she requested for two work references and promised to get back to me.

Before then, i heard God tell me, "the job is yours already, He single-handedly picked it for me. I am happy to announce to the whole house, indeed God keeps to His Word, i have received my employment letter and due to start work on Monday. For those till doubting that there is not just a God, but a Faithful one at that, who doesn't follow protocols in bringing to pass His Word, please you may have to reconsider your thoughts.

I am really ecstatic right now and want to encourage us all believers, do all you can, network all you can, prepare the best resume, enroll in the best courses, but do not rely on your efforts, put your trust in God and He will never let His children down.
congrats.u r blessed

Folks,
I am happy to tell you that the eagle has landed. Please find below my time line and ensuing epistle
IELTS: May 13th 2017
EE profile: June 8th 2017
CRS: 432
PNPO App- 3rd Nov 2017
PNP Nomination: 1st Feb 2018
ITA: 7th Feb 2018
AOR: 20th Feb 2018
MEP: 27th Feb 2018
IP2: 27TH Feb 2018
PPR: 20th March 2018
VO: Ottawa

Background: It has been a long journey and it started 2016 July. So the high CRS of 2016 kept us initially looking the way of getting a Canadian Education to augment our prospective low CRS due to age and level of Education. We were in the middle of the admission process when the CRS started dropping 1st half of last year and armed with an MSc admission, we decided to defer the admission and pursue the direct PR dream. In the words of threadstone, “nothing beats a PR than a PR” I couldn’t agree more with that assertion. Well, maybe nothing beats a PR than a Canadian passport.

ECA: The first problem was using ICAS to assess my credentials, to be candid, I am surprised they are still in business, it took them 8 months after my verification and transcript had been sent by my school. When I became frustrated with the delay, I went the way of WES. WES took 2 months and 3 days. Co incidentally, Both ICAS and WES ECA came out the same day.

IELTS: we studied using ieltsliz.com and did plenty of YouTube tutorials for the Listening. we took the May 13th IELTS and was waiting to dive in the pool the night of May 26th in anticipation for the draw of May 31st. unfortunately, that never happened, the IELTS results was delayed and due to the large scale delayed results and reported malpractice worldwide for that test date. I didn’t want us to take chances so we registered for another IELTS, luckily we got a seat for June 3rd. Our first IELTS results came in June 8th and we both aced the test CLB 9. The 2nd IELTS results came in exactly 13 days later, funny enough also standing at CLB 9 for both of us. But you probably know the story by now, that was the end of the below 430’s CRS for last year.

Silver Lining: The wait for the CRS to fall was so traumatizing that we just couldn’t focus clearly on anything. I remember most people like me who were in the pool last year in the 420’s and mid 430s who were still doing “shakara” when Ontario sent them notification. We became sober when we realized that score was not obeying the law of gravity. Let me digress a little, in the part of the world where we live, the CRS scores come out at night usually around 2am to 3am but you can always be sure that my wife and I would be awake during this time with calculator analyzing the pool and when we think it will get to us. August 17 for sure, we thought. August saw 433’s but no 432’s again. That was when we decided it was time to go back to our first love, the student admission process. So we started that one again. Fast forward, November 2nd, the HCP stream I was using to do shakara in June opened and I remember as I saw that news flash on my phone 3rd Nov, I left everything I was doing and I put in the application immediately.

POST ITA
Medicals: This one wanted to become a stumbling block but God was faithful. I shared the testimony earlier.

POF: 6 months statement on Bank letter head and stamped. There was no accompanying bank letter because weird as it sounds, my bank doesn’t issue such letters.

LOE: I know I probably was a little bit overzealous, but I wanted to avoid any back and forth ADRs, so I looked at any high bank transactions for the 6 months, quoted the dates and put receipts and explanations in there. I also stated my bank doesn’t issue such letters.
Also I had to put in here that my wife’s name change document was a recently sworn affidavit done in 2018. Although this was placed in the Place holder I just wanted to thrash out the disparity in dates.

ADVICE: if you are on the left wing of the 430’s, keep trying to get that CRS UP. Be prayerful, be vigilant and be ready. I wish you the best.

I’d like to send a special shout out to smslive2- Dude, you are far too kind, SmBalogun: I think you should consider a path in prophecy and all the numerous good people on this thread, May God grant your heart desires.

See you around in Canada, It will end in praise!

Cheers
congrats to u.thank God
