Hi, I'm new to this and trying to research as much as I can about solar systems so I can get a good system that will serve me well.

From what I've researched about LiFePo4, a 50ah lifepo4 battery should be equivalent to a 100 ah lead battery since those only have about 50% usable capacity.

If so this makes Lifepo4 batteries have the same price as lead acid for the same usable watt-hours.
True usually, and that applies for good LFP because it seems some marketers are pushing substandard LFPs into the market now that renewables are gravitating to it.

And yes the price is usually in the same range.

A 12v 40ah LFP is around 57k, 12v 60ah around 80k, 12v 100ah around 110k, 12v 120ah around 155k.

Good Pb-acid batteries are in that same price range for double the AH.

Ojeysky uses 24v LFP so he'll be in the best position to give you how much he procured his monster pack.

To add to what has been said, you are better off with an MPPT SCC as most of it are customisable. You can change the voltage at which your battery charges, a feature which I doubt you'd get with most PWM.
I used a PWM with the first LFP I had and the SCC was user customisable. But of course I missed the efficiency that MPPT offers.

I got that 30A PWM off of AE about 4 years ago and only used it for the first time late last year. Hoping to have an extra one, I have been scouting on AE for one with customizable options without luck.

BetaTechnicians:
ojeysky, ceasar and other lifepo4 users, how would you advise using a pwm cc to charge a lifepo4 battery?
Of course you can. LFP is not a voltage fad like lead acid which requires boost, float and equilibrium charges. If your PWM CC is user editable, then better. You just need to edit the max charge voltage to the manufacturer's recommended for the LFP. You may not have that luxury with PWM that lacks user editable options because you will only be limited to a boost charge of around 14.2v which is okay for your regular 12v LFP, but then that will be for a while as your CC will then drop to the 13.5v pre-set float charge at it tries to follow the in-built lead acid battery charging algorithm.

Your charge voltage sustained at 14.0/14.2v till sundown is the best for a 12v LFP.

You will not get the high efficiency from solar panel input that characterises MPPT with the PWM though.

The existing setup is 12v x 200ah battery, hooked to 2 x 250w panels, my fear is that the extra strain of running the 250w pump for 2 to 4 hrs daily, may be draining the batt badly, especially during poor weather...hence my uncommon plan to put 2 3xtra panels on timer...

I intend to wire it up with a float switch as well, to control tank fill up and pump shitdown as the setup is designed to be purely autonomous since its its in the villa and no knowledagble person around

@ aliexpress, yes received items from there, but hvnt oredered the pump yet.
Learnt nipost hv suspended ops for 2wks, so AliExpress purchases are a bit dicey now
Okay if I get you well, you intend that the 2 extra panels will work only on needed basis. When the timer kicks the pump in, the 2 extra panels also get auto connected thereby increasing the solar power input and that way the batteries do not get overcharged.

But I think that will only be possible if your existing SCC has not been maxed up already such that it can still accommodate the 2 extra panels, other wise, I'll suggest you get another small SCC that can handle the two new solar panels and get it booked onto the batteries.

That would also mean you will use your existing inverter, abi?

And I'm unable to get the link to view the pump o.

You should use a cable size vs distance chart.

In general;

10MM2 Cable is rated for about 40A Max

16MM2 Cable is rated for about 60A Max

For your specs you are better off with 25mm2 from each CC to battery and then 35mm2 mimimum for your *common* battery interlink or bus bar distribution.

For the CC yielding 18amps, you can cheap out and keep 10mm2 cable but as you add more panels, you will ultimately upgrade to thicker gauge cables - might as well bite the bullet at once
Thanks sir.

Please house.

System is 12volt inverter and battery. Charged by 2 pcs SCC units 60amps MPPT (same product) connected in parallel. One is fully maxed out at 6 pcs 150 watts panel connected in 2s3p. The second SCC receives input from a 2 pcs 150 watts panel in 2s config, planned to be maxed out like the counterpart at a later date. Batteries are 2 units 12v 120ah LFP connected in parallel.

On a good day, as much as 50 amps comes from the fully maxed SCC and 18 amps from the second SCC.

Wires leading from SCC common terminals to the battery is 10mm copper, about one yard each.

What I am not comfortable with is that the 10mm wire gets slightly warm when max current (as written above) is flowing from the SCC. And with the plan to still max out the output in the second SCC, to bring the total amp going into the batteries to around 110amps, I am a little bit worried that the wire may get unsafely hotter.

Should I be comfortable with the 10mm handling that anticipated amp or would you suggest something else?

Thanks.

China, that has open almost all factories..

I don't think Corona will stay that long on the panels.. grin
China has indeed resumed work in most of her factories. In fact BMW and Tesla have resumed work in earnest. However the problem now is apparently destination countries for items shipped out ofthese factories.

I ordered for a coupla small items and a DC solar submersible about 4 weeks ago, they all got shipped 3 weeks ago and last available tracking of about 10 days ago showed that it is on outbound airline out of China. Ever since then, tracking has not been updated.

I believe items must have gotten stranded at 9ja port of entry and may not move another inch until all these lockdowns are over. In fact, NIPOST expressly stated that they have suspended operations for now.

Funny enough those items, N95 masks, smoke masks, biohazard oxygen masks, biohazard suits and the pump included were ordered for as materials for "doomsday prep" grin , apparently the day came faster than the materials. cheesy

same with lead carbon I believe.
still observing...
That lead carbon is sold for approximately the same amount of lithium but I won't put my money on it.

Yes the carbon layer gives it an edge over the regular lead battery in terms of sulphation which the latter is quick to degrade to. But from experience narrated by a user, it doesn't tolerate partial SoC and deep discharge like its brother.

So while it has the same weakness of sulphation as its brother, the difference is that the problem takes a much longer time to set in than that of ordinary lead, basically because if the carbon layer.

PoliticsBREAKING: Buhari’s CoS, Abba Kyari, Reportedly Sick, Covid19 infection suspected by ceaser(op): 3:59am On Mar 24, 2020
Abba Kyari, Chief of Staff to Nigeria's President, Muhammadu Buhari, is said to be seriously ill and in fact suspected of being infected with Coronavirus.

A top government source told SaharaReporters on Monday that Kyari has been seriously "down" since returning from a trip abroad.

Kyari visited Germany and Egypt and only returned this week, giving credence to the fact that he may have indeed been infected with the virus.

Egypt has 327 confirmed cases of Coronavirus and 14 deaths while Germany has 29,056 infections and 123 deaths.

Though coughing severely, Kyari is said to have been attending meetings including with Buhari, Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo, ministers and other members of the Federal Executive Council.

Executive Chairman of Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, Prof James Momoh, was said to have accompanied Kyari on the trip to both countries.

The latest development comes hours after a leaked memo showed Kyari telling Nigerian legislators, who recently returned from foreign trips, to submit themselves for Coronavirus test.

It also comes after Aisha Buhari, wife of Nigeria's President, disclosed that one of her daughters was in self-isolation after returning from the United Kingdom, one of the high risk countries for the virus.

On Monday, Nigeria confirmed its first Coronavirus death after a former Managing Director of Pipelines and Products Marketing Company, a subsidiary of Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, Suleiman Achimugu, succumbed to the virus in Abuja.

Earlier, the Nigerian Center for Disease Control announced a total of 36 confirmed cases but with Kyari's suspected infection, that figure may have now risen to 37.

Do you own a spot welder? I noticed that it appears as if the cells are soldered. Interesting that just a few of the cells took the hit. Also when running the test on the cells, try charging each at 1A and check for any that is unusually warmer than the others, that one will be a torn in the flesh even if it passes your test if connected with others without high temperature issues.
That's the problem bro. I don't own a spot welder and I have a roll of nickel strip just wasting away o, imagine.

I hope I should be able to still salvage some of the cells. I will just use it to as pack for an expansion slot I'm DIYing for laptop power bank I bought off of AE. The power bank came originally with slots for 3s2p with BMS and all. I'll add more batteries to it.

Yes it's the same type. Usually 4pcs LiPo stacked together but connected in series. The dimensions of the cells should be written on it (usually 3 pairs of digits, each pair of digit representing the dimensions of the battery. If you can get those LiPo cells with the same dimensions and thickness, then you should be able to repair it.

You can type the digits in the search box of AliExpress website or app to get some hits.

These are rated 3.7v if am right and if you have them in 4S that will be 14.8 nominal and typical max on a 12v chargers is 15 to 16v so I don't think you will be hitting the max voltage often like that of Lifepo4 which is 12.8 normal. Perhaps it's the reason you've gotten away this far, but I still think you should have a BMS on them. It's better safe than sorry.
They are in 3s. They are on a buck converter that reduces charging voltage to 12.5v before it is fed into the battery pack. Buck converter supports up to 100 watts 18v solar panel.

I ran out of BMS stocks (I've broken a few from experimenting). So I kuku don't bother using it again.
