HealthEbola: Britain Runs Nationwide Emergency Drill by ceejayluv(op): 9:26am On Oct 12, 2014
London - Britain is ready to cope with
an Ebola outbreak, Health Secretary
Jeremy Hunt declared Saturday,
following a nationwide exercise to test
the country's readiness.
The eight-hour exercise featured
actors pretending to have Ebola plus
doctors, nurses and the ambulance
service treating them around the
country.
It was followed by a simulated
meeting of the government's
emergency committee COBRA,
chaired by Hunt.
"This is an extremely useful exercise
and I feel doubly reassured that we
have robust plans in place in the
event that we get an Ebola case in the
UK," he said.
"We will evaluate what went well and
what we need to improve.
"This exercise is just one small part of
our ongoing contingency plans for
Ebola."
The Department of Health said it had
been planning its response to an
Ebola case ever since the outbreak
began in west Africa.
"This vitally important exercise gave a
very realistic test of how prepared the
system is to deal with a case of Ebola,"
said England's Chief Medical Officer
Sally Davies, the government's senior
health adviser.
"Today has included a variety of
scenarios involving personnel from
hospitals, ambulance services and
local authorities."
The exercise was ordered by Prime
Minister David Cameron.
As part of the exercise, a person
collapsed in a shopping centre in
Newcastle, northeast England, and
was placed in isolation in a nearby
hospital, with samples sent to the
government's Porton Down science
laboratory in southeast England.
After Ebola was diagnosed, the patient
was transferred to a London hospital.
In another case, a patient turned up
to a walk-in centre in London with flu-
like symptoms, having recently
returned from west Africa.
The Ebola epidemic has killed over
4,000 people this year, according to
the World Health Organization (WHO),
with Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone
the worst hit.
Britain has only treated one case of
Ebola on its shores.
William Pooley, a nurse who
contracted the virus while working in
Sierra Leone, made a full recovery last
month after being treated in a London
hospital.
But concerns have risen since a
Spanish nurse caught Ebola while
treating a patient in a Madrid hospital
and the WHO has warned that other
isolated infections in Europe were
"unavoidable".
Britain announced Wednesday it was
sending 750 military personnel, a
medical ship and three helicopters to
Sierra Leone to help fight the spread
of Ebola.
It also said Thursday it would start
screening travellers coming from
Ebola-hit parts of west Africa at
London's Heathrow and Gatwick
airports and on Eurostar trains to the
capital from Belgium and France.

Tell them my brother, typical APC, yoruba propaganda. They will never give Federal government credit due to them. Same with Ebola success, they are all crying Fashola, Fashola, this and that. Listen, Fashola did nothing...wasn't it the same Fashola that refused the magic Nano Silver that saved lives? Come on people! The Federal Government under a very active minister of health championed this ebola cause and deserves commendation. Same with this project, federal government should be commended.

You just prove my point with that research paper that there is no conclusive evidence linking ebola to fruit bats and monkeys as natural hosts, i actually believe the dead chimps and gorillas were infected by humans. There is no disease call ebola in nature, it is a man made virus that was first released by the CIA near the ebola river in 1976 to punish Mobutu Sese seko the late Zaire dictator who refused their request to use part of the populace for an HIV experiment this is not a conspiracy but an historical fact .

RaptorX: Conspiracy theories? I dont deal with consipracies but facts, show me one scientific evidence that ebola comes from bats or monkeys, none, zero its all made up evidence. Dont you know that there is a plan to exterminate you and people like you from this planet? Go tell the people of Liberia and Sierra leone who are being infected at the rate of five people per hr, its because they are eating bats and monkeys .
Don't tell me you dunno that ebola is transmitted human-to-human through contacts with bodily fluids.... One bat-infected person can cause an Armageddon-level havoc.

All cases in Sierra Leone are traced to a healer that hosted infected patients from Guinea.

And we all know that from a patient 0(original carrier of ebola) ebola will spread to wattttmore than 81 people in that period. And they dint know there was ebola so.there was no preventive measures It would av spread to sm1 who probably moved to georgia/florida/ny. And no one will know. By d tym they find out. It will be outta control
That was the same fear we had after that buffoon went to hide in PH with ebola.., over a hundred people were thenceforth observed.
Duncan fell ill four days after he arrived Dallas.. was confirmed to have ebola four days after. The fact is that so far, there is one confirmed ebola case in the USA. There are high prospects of containment.

I thought Americans know it all? They should administer their ZMAPP to any ebola-infected citizen of theirs. What are they waiting for? And Nigeria should screen Americans coming to Nigeria very well before they bring in yet another deadly virus which they have sat in their labs to create. Yes, I said it. I don't trust America.

Nah... This is an emergency case that requires martial-level logistics.
By the way, there are scores of western medical volunteers there already. I admit more aid is needed though.

londoner: You obviously don't know some the history of American drug companies and using Nigerians as guinea pigs.

I'm not against western invented anything. I am questioning America's intentions here.

If there was an outbreak of ebola in the US, I could understand but there isn't.
But the US avoided using Nigerians as Guinea pigs in the zmapp saga but we still condemned them.

londoner: Hmmmm, the US coming to Nigeria to "learn" how Nigeria curbed ebola? The same way came to Nigeria to "rescue" some kidnapped girls?

They either need some guinea pigs for their own ebola drug, or they want to introduce a different strain, the offer their drug for a fee.

I honestly do not trust their intentions. The west does not care about diseases that don't effect them, unless they can make momey from it.

We should look carefully, instead of getting our heads swollen, all because we believe that we now matter to the US.
Bullshit..... You can as well stop using the untrustworthy western-invented internet.

When I first read this info on another website, I burst out laughing. Anyways, USA has nothing to worry about. They have their ZMAPP. They should use it and all shall be well again. After all, that is why they are called 'first world country.' What I find equally amusing is how yet again these self hating american-wannabe Nigerians have flocked this thread bemoaning the fact that some Nigerians are laughing at USA's predicament. It's like these self-hating american-wannabe Nigerian Negroes are on the verge of developing high blood pressure grin

I remember when Dana airlines crashed in Lagos, many Americans took to yahoo comments and said some of the most insensitive things about Nigeria and Nigerians ever while other fellow Americans saw no need to reprimand them. It is something I will never forget. Even though I hold American citizenship after living for almost a decade and a half in USA- longer than I ever lived in Nigeria - Americans always made sure to treat me like an outsider asking me some of the most silliest and condescending questions about Africa ever. So, why should I form solidarity with USA and Americans?

Even the Nigerians living in USA know that white and black Americans will never see you as one of them. The whites generally hate black people. The black Americans generally hate continental Africans so I don't know why some of you are coming here to talk crap forming solidarity with USA. If white Americans had their way, all Negroes will be thrown out of the USA. FACT! So, all you self-hating american-wannabe Nigerians disturbing our peace on this thread should take a back seat. If you love USA so much, you are welcome to take your america-loving-self-hating-Nigerian-behind to an American forum.

Lastly, if you are one of those self-hating american-wannabe Nigerians I talk about in my post, don't even bother quoting me because you are on my ignore list permanently. You shall receive no response from me because I don't talk to sell outs and hypocrites online or offline! Kapish?

Happy independence! cool
Renounce your American citizenship and return to naija na... You don't fight an enemy while living in his house...
The argument here is common sense/ rationality vs sheer |diocy. How does congratulating and mocking Obama on an ebola case make any sense?? Even when they've raised the issue of the risk of ebola permeating a developed country months ago..
The spiteful comments here are not unconnected to the nano Silver "magic potion" myth and conspiracy theories- Two brain-rottingly ignorant schools of thought.

though my answer to your question is....my father and his friends gave Nigerian health officials at the isolation centre in Lagos the expert advice and know how on the handling of the epidemic..
Sharap there.... The bottom line.is that they helped in no small measure, even Chukwu acknowledged their invaluable assistance.
Senegal also managed their ebola case impeccably. Nigeria and Senegal had the privilege of preparation and awareness to combat the virus. This outbreak had already spread from Guinea to Sierra Leone and Liberia before it was identified. ...
Acknowledge assistance given to you in trying times.
