London - Britain is ready to cope with an Ebola outbreak, Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt declared Saturday, following a nationwide exercise to test the country's readiness. The eight-hour exercise featured actors pretending to have Ebola plus doctors, nurses and the ambulance service treating them around the country. It was followed by a simulated meeting of the government's emergency committee COBRA, chaired by Hunt. "This is an extremely useful exercise and I feel doubly reassured that we have robust plans in place in the event that we get an Ebola case in the UK," he said. "We will evaluate what went well and what we need to improve. "This exercise is just one small part of our ongoing contingency plans for Ebola." The Department of Health said it had been planning its response to an Ebola case ever since the outbreak began in west Africa. "This vitally important exercise gave a very realistic test of how prepared the system is to deal with a case of Ebola," said England's Chief Medical Officer Sally Davies, the government's senior health adviser. "Today has included a variety of scenarios involving personnel from hospitals, ambulance services and local authorities." The exercise was ordered by Prime Minister David Cameron. As part of the exercise, a person collapsed in a shopping centre in Newcastle, northeast England, and was placed in isolation in a nearby hospital, with samples sent to the government's Porton Down science laboratory in southeast England. After Ebola was diagnosed, the patient was transferred to a London hospital. In another case, a patient turned up to a walk-in centre in London with flu- like symptoms, having recently returned from west Africa. The Ebola epidemic has killed over 4,000 people this year, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), with Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone the worst hit. Britain has only treated one case of Ebola on its shores. William Pooley, a nurse who contracted the virus while working in Sierra Leone, made a full recovery last month after being treated in a London hospital. But concerns have risen since a Spanish nurse caught Ebola while treating a patient in a Madrid hospital and the WHO has warned that other isolated infections in Europe were "unavoidable". Britain announced Wednesday it was sending 750 military personnel, a medical ship and three helicopters to Sierra Leone to help fight the spread of Ebola. It also said Thursday it would start screening travellers coming from Ebola-hit parts of west Africa at London's Heathrow and Gatwick airports and on Eurostar trains to the capital from Belgium and France. www.news24.com/nigeria/World/News/Britain-feels-ready-after-Ebola-outbreak-test-20141012 |
new2020:OK, kid. .. Go and debate with your mates. |
new2020:Cleanse this forum of dumb a$ses, oh Lord... www.sunnewsonline.com/new/?p=78062 |
tomiobj:That's where contact tracing comes in... Which they have done. |

Guerrilla funk?? You're quoting some struggling hip hop record label ramblings as your scientifically reliable source?? you guys seem to out-dumb yourselves by the minute.... |
Princecharmin:Hehehe..... Dumb... |
bennygreat1:the Doc was taken to Germany for treatment... No cause for alarm.. |
RaptorX:Links pls.... And pls, no conspiracy theory and peudo-science sites... |
cap28:Seriously??.. backing up your conspiracy theory with another conspiracy theory site?? Go and read about Louis Farrakhan and the nation of Islam.... Dude is a borderline jihadist.. |

forgotnhero: before all animals start having a sence of equal right with human beings, america told nigeria 'oha' that they can not help us deal with ebola until we upgrade, now we have surpased progress is a slow process and waxing swiftly on progress in process. Now i will just chill, sit back and relax to watch how this super upgrades deal with process and progress.Chukwu added, "Let me also reaffirm that the United States of America has fully been part of this battle; how to contain the Ebola Virus Disease in Nigeria. US CDC has done wonderfully well. " “Even if you go remotely, part of the infrastructure we have in Nigeria was because US CDC worked with Nigeria to get them established. So, we are grateful to the government of United States; and the support continues to come in. Even some of the hand- held infrared thermometers we are using were provided by the United States government.” www.punchng.com/news/us-urges-nigeria-to-help-liberia-others-tackle-ebola/ |
RaptorX: Conspiracy theories? I dont deal with consipracies but facts, show me one scientific evidence that ebola comes from bats or monkeys, none, zero its all made up evidence. Dont you know that there is a plan to exterminate you and people like you from this planet? Go tell the people of Liberia and Sierra leone who are being infected at the rate of five people per hr, its because they are eating bats and monkeys .Don't tell me you dunno that ebola is transmitted human-to-human through contacts with bodily fluids.... One bat-infected person can cause an Armageddon-level havoc. All cases in Sierra Leone are traced to a healer that hosted infected patients from Guinea. |
We know how it'll end.. MALARIA.. |
tomiobj: In under a few days. The matter of usa is in weeks they didn't even know. Nigerians knew in under 5 days. Took us 2 weeks. And we all know that from a patient 0(original carrier of ebola) ebola will spread to wattttmore than 81 people in that period. And they dint know there was ebola so.there was no preventive measures It would av spread to sm1 who probably moved to georgia/florida/ny. And no one will know. By d tym they find out. It will be outta controlThat was the same fear we had after that buffoon went to hide in PH with ebola.., over a hundred people were thenceforth observed. Duncan fell ill four days after he arrived Dallas.. was confirmed to have ebola four days after. The fact is that so far, there is one confirmed ebola case in the USA. There are high prospects of containment. |
RaptorX: Leave these dummies alone to be jubilating over what they dont know, i said it yesterday this guy was allowed to bring in the virus delibrately. When they start killing blacks and rounding them up into the Fema camps, that they have built all over the US, with the millions of coffins the dept of homeland security have ordered, including the billions of rounds of hollow point bullets, they will understand this is a covert operation. Nothing but giving a dog a bad name in order to hang it."Dumb" defined..... |
Erotex: For those who are criticizing NollywoodChei!! Talk true... Hehehe... |
tomiobj: . 81 is too much. They can't contain it.81 under observation.... we observed over 200 suspected cases during our ordeal... |
bushdoc9919: What we did in Nigeria was strong supprtive treatment....with antibiotics, IV fluid, and bedrest....which, as research(done largely by Americans and Europeans) shows is imprtant to fight Ebola.Don't waste your time... There are so many demented chimps on this thread.. |
kinda embarrassing.... But it's badly needed. |
dasparrow: And you can as well LEAVE this platform called Nairaland which was created by a NIGERIAN living IN NIGERIA and go and create your own forum where you can type all the crap you like and stop being a pest here. You worship USA yet you spend quite a lot of time on a Nigerian forum? So many confused morons on here. Its sickening!Blah blah blah.... Nairaland is but a scripted Web app in a vast internet network invented by- you know who. what with globalisation and multiple nationalities, how the heck do you expect only Nigerians to visit this forum? Seun is globally-inclined. |
lrguru: they do, but hey!! There are trained doctors who are supposed to be well grounded in such complicated cases than military doctors who are only trained in few parts like givin first aid to injured colleague or others.Nah... This is an emergency case that requires martial-level logistics. By the way, there are scores of western medical volunteers there already. I admit more aid is needed though. |
dalhjana: hey bro..use this link. I hope you believe what I said earlier:-)That doesn't negate my stand... They helped us with guidelines and basic infrastructure on isolation and containment. now we're a quintessential case study on successful containment (likewise Senegal)... |
lrguru: so the US military are more medically trained than doctors. Smh.....now we are beginning to see those of u that wrote ur WAEC and GCE in special centresI guess the military has no medical personnel....right? |
londoner: You obviously don't know some the history of American drug companies and using Nigerians as guinea pigs. But the US avoided using Nigerians as Guinea pigs in the zmapp saga but we still condemned them. |
londoner: Hmmmm, the US coming to Nigeria to "learn" how Nigeria curbed ebola? The same way came to Nigeria to "rescue" some kidnapped girls?Bullshit..... You can as well stop using the untrustworthy western-invented internet. |
ayindejimmy: Lol! GEJ be like, 'Sory Mr Obama, I'm actualy in my re-election political rally. Can u call me back in like...NEVER!?' |
Bliss4Lyfe: Same US dat could not give Nigeria their ebola treatment or drugs? Same US blocking Nigeria Arms purchase to fight Boko Haram?Laughable... Why didn't you chase the US CDC officials when they were helping with ebola containment efforts in Lagos? |
dalhjana: so what do you have to say about the zmapp drug? What about it?... Wasn't the drug tested on a Nigerian doctor whom later survived? |
If you're in the friend zone,,man up and accept it... Not all holes must be "drilled". |
dasparrow: @PostRenounce your American citizenship and return to naija na... You don't fight an enemy while living in his house... The argument here is common sense/ rationality vs sheer |diocy. How does congratulating and mocking Obama on an ebola case make any sense?? Even when they've raised the issue of the risk of ebola permeating a developed country months ago.. The spiteful comments here are not unconnected to the nano Silver "magic potion" myth and conspiracy theories- Two brain-rottingly ignorant schools of thought. |
dalhjana: don't be deceived..if there was any advice, I believe they also advised other west African countries. why is the advice not working for them?.see believe it or kindly leave it... we handled this monster our own way.Sharap there.... The bottom line.is that they helped in no small measure, even Chukwu acknowledged their invaluable assistance. Senegal also managed their ebola case impeccably. Nigeria and Senegal had the privilege of preparation and awareness to combat the virus. This outbreak had already spread from Guinea to Sierra Leone and Liberia before it was identified. ... Acknowledge assistance given to you in trying times. |
