The coup itself was to prevent greater evil. If they were more mature I am sure they wouldn't have killed people. They were just boys at the end of the day
I won't totally agree with you on your last point.
Major Nzeogwu and many of the coupists were some of the finest and best trained Military Personnel there was then.
These were Sandhurst groom officers, and any officer trained in Sandhurst were the most intelligent officers.
So even though they were young, they are very sound and knew their onions.
Perhaps, I would say they were (especially Nzeogwu) was driven by radicalism ideologies. Nzeogwu was said to be strong Marxist in his reasoning. This ideology might have influenced the violent niche the coup witnessed.
I agree with you that the coup might have prevented a greater evil, but it was characterised by gory ethnic bloodshed which was the low point of the coup.

Very correct o. Coups by Generals are more successful.Orkar's coup might have worked if not that they were all very high on cocaine and failed to seize Abacha who mobilised and countered
Not Necessarily so. Generals and Top Military Officers have been known to plan coups and failed. Eg the Dimka failed Coup involved Major Gen. I.D Bissallah.
There are some Tactical Units very essential to be securer for a Coup to succeed. Most coups that failed were largely due to failure to capture and secure these units.
The Armoured Artillery in Lagos and Ibadan were very essential then during the Military coup eras.
While the Dimkas Coup was the worst and most poorly planned and executed coup in the history of Nigeria hence it failed, the Gideon Orkar coup was almost bound to fail due to its planned excising of some parts of Northern Nigeria from Nigeria.
However, both coups failed to secure Armoured Artilleries hence both coups gave the ruling Military govt to leverage on these Armoured Artilleries to fight back and overpower them.

No, these were young revolutionary minded men with socialist leaning. Major Ademoyega said as much in his book. Major Ifeajuna was infact a fiery Students Union leader at the University of Ibadan who led protests against the school authorities over the closure of an hostel and against the visits of the Queen to Nigeria.
But the coup lacked poor execution outside the North. Nzeogwu was a tactical officer, he did his job well and infact practiced for it for weeks under the guise of routine military practice; the others failed to properly carry out their orders. Their biggest mistake was
1) Not arresting the head of the Army: General Ironsi which allowed him rally against the coupists and also made the North think it was an Ibo coup with no blood shed in the East and no Ibo military or civilian leader killed. IT WAS NOT AN IBO COUP.
2) Unnecessary bloodshed.
Brilliant perspective and well aligned post you came up with. You did your research well.
But let me make a few additions.
1. Nzeogwu actually planned to kill Aguyi Ironsi in the coup. But some of the Coupist ( Likely Ifejuna) who were to carry out the operation in Lagos either fail to kill Ironsi OR deliberately tipped him off. While some record has it that Ironsi escaped from attacks in his house and hide in Police HQ, from where he fought back, other records say Ifejuna was against the killing of Ironsi and deliberately failed to carry out that order.
2. Perhaps, the Nzeogwu coup would have been widely accepted and celebrated ( the Nigerian populace were aactually angry with the massive corruption of the civilian govt) but for the fact that the coupist killed prominent Northern Officials and the highest serving Northern Military Officer - Maimalari (over 75% of the death toll was Northerners) giving it an ethnic coloration most especially as rumours began to fill out that Nnamdi Azikiwe was tipped off by the IBO and had fore knowledge of the coup and told to leave the country before the coup. These facts gave rise to mutinies by Northern soldiers in Lagos and many parts of the country.
3. Operation Damissa - was a Tactical Military Exercise in Kaduna led by Major Nzeogwu, it was strongly alleged that the Military exercise provided the platform through which most of the coupists were recruited. Fajuyi was one of the key instructors of the Military Exercise. And it has been strongly adduced that Fajuyi was arrested and killed alongside Ironsi because the Northern Soldiers were convinced he knew about the Nzeogwu coup and might have possibly instrumental to it.
While many records has it that Fajuyi submitted himself to be arrested and killed alongside Ironsi, other new records and perspectives have opined that Fajuyis death can be strongly linked to Operation Damissa thru which Nzeogwu recruited the coupists.

sangresan:
We have many childish and ill-informed political analysts like you on social media these days. What give you the impression that Tinubu is going to contest the coming election? You are the type that believes everything you read in Nigerian news media, no matter how absurd this is.

Now, here is a quick recap of Nigerian politics: 1. The Hausa/Fulanis in their majority will never support Igbo candidate for the president...So you're just deceiving yourself about any cabal supporting an Igbo man.

2. The first point brings us to the issue of cabal or no cabal. Look, the so-called cabal won't decide who will become the president...The best they can do is to align their intentions with popular opinion...The Yar'adua cabal couldn't prevent Goodluck Jonathan becoming the president in 2010 and 2015...If it's all about cabal, Shagari wouldn't have won the 1979 and 1983 election....In 1979, Shagari was in contest with Adamu Ciroma and others...Those were the real Northern cabal...But Shagari got the nod due to some factors as he was known to be gentle, urbane, and close to the late Sardaunna....In 1983, some members of the so-called Kaduna mafia such as the late Yar'adua supported Awo against Shagari, yet Shagari cleared the results in the Northern states, second only to Aminu Kano in Kano and Kaduna. In 1993, Abiola defeated a northerner Bashir Tofa, and beat him in his native Kano....

3. It was only in 1999 that the so-called northern cabal had a field day against the south by bringing Obj from prison to become the president...Yet they were still not brave enough to present any candidate from their North as a presidential candidate to face the Yoruba contenders....My point is that Nigerian history is replete with consensus building and horse trading for you to deceive us with the idea of a 'powerful' Buhari cabal determining who becomes the next president.

4. Those Buhari goons know too well that they don't have enough power to hijack the party machinery to install anybody..The worst they can do is to undermine the party to pave the way for PDP....They are not politicians in the true sense of it and don't possess the spirit of "give and take" like the Atikus and Tinubus...So saying that some political lilliputians of the old CPC can hold Tinubu to ransom is your pipe dream..These are guys who couldn't contain Saraki....Go and read more about them...You people are over-hyping the so-called Buhari cabal..

5. There is a difference between the old northern cabal and Buhari's cabal...They obviously don't have the same goals....The earlier you realize this, the better...
Mister I know it all Analyst, I took time to read all your long script and fail to understand where you are driving at especially as your first paragragh completely contradicts your #4 point above.
You say Tinubu does not intend to contest, and yet you say the Northern cabal cannot hold Tinubu to ransom and hijack the party machinery.
Oga, did Tinubu categorically tell you he won't contest in 2023? So why is he busy touring the North and paying homage upandan and soliciting for support?
Are you Tinubu spokesman to tell us he won't contest?
Hold you view, (you are entitled to it) and let me hold my view in peace. No be quarrel. So don't resort to abuse and calling other people with a different opinion from yours childish.

I don't know precisely how 2023 will play out, but for sure Tinubu will not be President. The Muslim Northern Cabal will never allow him because as a Southern Muslim, a Tinubu Candidacy would mean a Christian Northern VP. And by this arrangement, the Muslim North is totally cut off from governance. Tinubu candidacy is a NO- NO for the Muslim Northern Cabal, it won't happen. Tinubu is the most foolish politician to believe the Northern Cabals will support him.

The Muslim Northern Cabal might even play the Divide and Rule card (by pitching the South against itself) to retain power to the North. The Muslim Northern Cabal might even opt to urge Osibanjo to contest and support Osibanjo rather than Tinubu, thereby tearing apart the Tinubu/ Osibanjo relationship and pitching them against each other. Meanwhile, the cabal are giving the IBOs the hope of 2023 Presidency, but do they really mean it? Or is it a ploy to divide the Southern votes further and give the north more advantage?
But one thing is certain, the North often and very likely vote according to Religious and Ethnic sentiment. They will vote for any Northern Muslim (be it a child) ahead of even the most credible Southern Candidate.
I think the Muslim North have a Joker they will play come 2023.

Am sure you have not see read about civil wars, Or seen a full blown riot.
Let those that have seen one talk. All these teenagers on Nairaland talk and brag too much.
You don't have to be a coward to say No to war or religious riot.
Those have seen one will tell you we don't need war again.
So I let you know, the IBO's in the Biafra war were well better off during the civil war being that;
1. They had good trained Military ooficers and soldiers to fight the civil war.
2. They had other non IBO states (Rivers, Cross River and part of Benue states) supporting them in the war.
3. They had virile young civilians who were willing and ready to join and fight the war.
Even with all these advantages, the ibos still lost the war..
Now fast forward to today, all those factors are no more there. The IBO's don't longer have Military officers to execute a war. The ibos will be strictly on their own as other states like cross river, Rivers, Akwa Ibom and others will not join the Ibos in any war they call for. And most importantly, the IBO region is now an enclosed terroritory will makes it dangerous for them to engage in a war.
With these and many other factors, the Ibos will lose a war even before it starts.

Orizu Nwafors frustration of NPCs efforts to have Dipcherima sworn in showed that NCNC Politicians were neck deep in the Coup.

The British high Commisioner in Lagos reported that as recently as November of 1965 Nzeogwu had been attending meetings with NCNC Politicians.

Also Busia, the Opposition leader to Kwame Nkrumah had sent an urgent message to Prime Minister Tafawa Balewa days before Balewa was Killed which stated that Azikiwe with the Support of Nkrumah was planning a Coup to remove Balewa .

That explained why Ifeajuna was helped to escape to Ghana after his meeting with Premier of the Eastern Region Okpara after the Coup had Failed and was given protection by Nkrumah.

Zik visited Papa Doc of Haiti during the vacation and was a VIP at the Haitian Prime Ministers elaborate Ceremonies where all the Diplomatic Corp were also invited what he didn't know was that the British Ambassador to Haiti was busy spying on him and sending the information back to the British Government that Zik was well enough to be attending Parties and appeared to be very fine.
We are both saying the same thing.
Zik very possibly heard or must have been informed about the coup before it happened. But he played aloof and not directly involved. That coup was strictly a Military affairs and it was also the first coup, it wasn't something a civilian could possibly have been directly involved

If you have done deep studies of that Coup and read the British declassified documents then by now you would know that Zik was part of the Coup

Zik sent a telegram from the UK to Gen Ironsi addressing him as the head of the State at a time when Dipcherima was still the leader of the Rump Cabinet.

After the Telegram had been sent the Commonwealth Office had to correct Zik and inform him that Dipcherima and not Ironsi was the leader of the remaining Ministers.

So when Gen Ironsi finally took over Power it was very Obvious that Zik had previous knowledge of Gen Ironsi's plan

Also you would have read the information were Ziks British Doctor informed the British intelligence that there was no Medical reason for Zik not to have returned to Nigeria for the Commonwealth Leaders conference which held in Lagos two days before the Coup.
Well said.
But, i would rather be careful not to say "Zik was part of the Coup".
Being part of a thing means you participated or took decision about a thing. On that basis, I would say NO, Zik was not " Part of the coup".
However, I would be more comfortable if you say Zik was aware of the coup before it took place.
Truth be told, Zik might likely have been tipped off about the eminent coup by one of the coup plotters. Sources from books I read said Zik went for a Medical trip in UK in December, but rather went off on vacation to the Carrebeans and failed to return by January for a crucial Intl Conference that was holding in Lagos early January, whereas he was a key representative for Nigeria in that conference as a President. Very OK to deduced that he was deliberately absent cos of the eminent coup.

Seriously, this is now more like a dual conversation between you and i, so i think it is more appropriate we henceforth have this discourse privately and not on Nairaland.

Happy and Blessed New year to is all!

Fajuyi was among those to have been assassinated that was why Ifeajuna booked him a room at Eko Hotel with Lagerma, David Ejoor even Gowon was supposed to be staying at the Eko hotel that night.

Ademoyega made some claims in his book " Why we Struck"

1. He and Oyewole joined the Coup because they were deceived into believing Awolowo would be released and made Prime Minister

- On the day of the Coup it turned out there was no such Plan.( They had been used and were not part of the inner Caucus of the Grand Plot).

2- Nzeogwu and Ademoyega also alleged that Ifeajuna and some officers were so Tribalistic in the execution of the Coup that both Ironsi and Ojukwu were not only unhurt but took over Power.

3- Major Obienu who was one of the Coup Planners supposed to Command the Armoured Vehicles from Abeokuta disappeared on the morning of the Coup and turned up on Ironsi's side after Gowon had stated Countering the Coup this means Ironsi know about the plot all along Capt Oji and Major Obienu made sure he was updated

There was even a Police Intelligence report on the Coup plot from one Fagbola an IG of Police
that mentioned Ifeajuna and Nzeogwu but Ironsi didn't act on it.

-

Another Problem of believing Fajuyi was part of the Coup

Fajuyi was an Ekiti man like Brigadier Ademulegun GOC of first division Kaduna ,

It is inconceivable that Fajuyi would be Part of a Coup that aimed to Murder Ademulegun and his wife his own Kinsmen in the Army

It would have been the equivalent of asking Ifeajuna to support the murder of Azikiwe his Cousin from Onitsha whom he leaked the Coup plot to and only.allowed the Coup to go ahead after Zik had left the Country.

If Fajuyi had truly been part of the Coup the Coup Plotters would. never have been able to kill
Brigadier Ademulegun.

Ekiti Kindred ties are very strong and they do not condone treachery.

For example remember how Fajuyi was ready and willing to die for Ironsi who was not an Ekiti man

If Ademulegun his Ekiti Kinsman had been involved he would have taken his Omoluabi ( Code of Honour) to the Wire.
He would have fought to save Ademulegun's life even if it would cost him his own.

https://m.guardian.ng/sunday-magazine/i-have-no-regret-advising-fajuyi-to-join-nigerian-army/
While I would want to agree with your #1 and #2 points above, I might want to disagree with your number #3.
However, I personally have made deep studies into that particular coup and the aftermath to ascertain some patchy issues (more because of the gory details). Two of the most consistent and unresolved issues has been :
1. Was Aguyi Ironsi actually involved in the coup?
2. Why was Lt Col Fajuyi killed? Was he also involved?

While there have been varied versions and details from various sources (mostly from direct actors of the coup and countercoup), mine angle has always been to probe into the activities that transpired shortly before the coup.
I have learnt from various studies of coups in different parts of the world ( and even in movies) that unusual or sudden activities that takes place shortly before a coup are key in unlocking the mystery or unravelled truth behind the coups.
In the case of the Nzeougo coup( but it was actually kickstarted and masterminded by Major Ifeajuna), i keep making reference to Operation Damissa. That Tactical Military Operation was critical preceding the coup. That Operation was where and where many were recruited for the coup. Who and who were associated with that coup? And many versions linked Fajuyi to that operation as he was an Instructor.
While I am not 100% certain about his involvement, but I have also not been easily inclined to the narrative that Fajuyi "laid down his life for Ironsi",( if he is not Jesus, why would he do that? ).
I think I am more inclined to think Fajuyi knew about it or heard about it, but not directly involved in the coup. ( Just as Sani Abacha was said to have heard about the coup that ousted Buhari but did not participate.). Perhaps, that was why Fajuyi was taken and killed alongside Ironsi. T.Y Danjuma's account actually did make reference to Fajuyi being aware of the coup, and that was the reason why the NCO and soldiers didn't let him alive.
To be honest, there are still some truths about the coup that will remain unravelled as the very main actors have died with such truths. We can only try to speculate.

Hmmm.

Nigeria is sitting on a keg of gun powder that is at the brink of exploding in our faces and consuming all of us.
Sahel Fulani's from the Mali, Niger and Chad has seen a porous, unsecured and financially viable territory in Nigeria where they can carry out their brands of illegalities and terrorism unchecked.
Worst still, they have become very comfortable at home with their Northern Nigerian brothers who not only accommodate them, but also have become their willing accomplices.
Bad enough, Northern Nigeria (especially the North East, and in recent times the North west) has been engulfed with terrorism, kidnappings and Banditry (whoever gave that nomenclature)..... That is because they romanced and accepted the situation as imposed by the religious brothers.
But what is worse enough is the determination of these marauding Fulani criminals (and their accomplices) to export these criminalities to the Southern parts of Nigeria by hook or crook.
If the North has welcomed and accommodated the Marauding Fulanis from the Sahel because they have a common ground in Religion, The South is very much diversified in Religion and can not be a part to that evil alliance to accommodate crime and terrorism.
The Southern Nigeria will resist it with all our might ( even if we would chase out all suspected Fulanis out of our land).
