Racoon:
Yes! You're right sir.So also is the "Oil, Politics and Violence" by Max Siollun. There was actually this "76" movies that came close in depicting how that abortive Lt.Col.Bukar Suker Dimka's Coup of Feb.13 1976 took place.
Yes. The book - Oil, Politics and Violence did vividly described what played out in the Dimka Coup and the actors in the whole incidence. Buhari (who is a staunch protégé of Murtala Mohammed) was a key actor in foiling that coup.
Anyone that read those books before 2015 elections would have known who Buhari truly is and would not vote for him. Before i read Oil, POlitics and Violence, i had always perceived Murtala Mohammed as a gentle soldier. But the book depicted that he was a hard and stubborn soldier who had at many times openly threatened to deal with General Gowon, and he eventually overthrew Gowon and became the Head of state after ousting Gowon with the help of his staunch loyalists. Infact, the book narrated that Murtala was killed by those Loyal to Gowon as a revenge 6 months after Murtala ousted Gowon. the book further indicated that those times were very deadly times in the Military when there was distrusts and bad blood in the Military so much that everyone was scared of being assassinated, and after Murtala was killed, there was vacuum in the Military Headship for over 2 weeks and everyone ( Obasanjo and co who were highest officers then) refused to become Head of State. However, Obasanjo was almost forced to be Head of State so as to change Leadership to the Southern Nigeria to doused the Bad that had brewed between the Northern Military Christians camp ( The Langtan block and loyalist to Gowon) on one hand, and the Northern Military Muslims ( The Murtala Mohammed loyalist) on the other hand.
Anyone who wants to know why Nigeria is the way it is today should go and read 'Oil, Politics and violence" by Max Siolliun, And also the sequel of that book called - "Soldiers of Fortune" by same Author. But Books are Masterpieces that gives detailed accounts of every Top Nigerian Military officer since independence and their different roles in the Military to bastardized and destroyed Nigeria.

You can search and read these books online on : https://books.google.com.ng/books

Nigeria is a great country, infact one if the greatest to have ever come out of Africa despite our minor set backs, for decades and centuries we have had trade relationship with our neighbouring country Niger.

To me the lack of sea port would make Niger not to able to attain it's full potentials.

Despite the sahara desert I see huge potentials in Niger republic, and they are not untilling but effectively.

Niger republic immigrants already make up a huge chunk of Nigerias immigrants, they see Nigeria as a second home as much as we see Niger as a second home.

Why don't we unite into one country.

Agree with some of your points, though not all and my disagreements pertain to:

(1)To say that good, peaceful, peace-loving and law-abiding northern muslims are few, I think it amounts to, at the very least, a slip of the pen. The Hausas say that "elders don't lie but their tongues can slip", so I want to give u the respect that your pen slipped on that one! If you have lived among northern muslims my bro, you wont be talking the way you are. Ask those who have, please.
(2) You stated quite rightly that those who cause trouble in the north are "volatile idle youth" or 'almajiri' and, I hasten to add ignorant political thugs. But the thing is it is agents of the state(police, sss, soldiers, nspcc etc) that should be responsible for checking the excesses of all law breakers and not some bright sparks or goody-goody samaritans who, because they want to avoid blanket-labelling, should be intimidated into confronting hardened drug addicts and thugs. Do southern gentlemen like you confront cultists that dot the southern landscape like coals in Newcastle? Or Area boys and OPC miscreants that have organized so many massacres against Hausa/Fulani muslims in the SW? No, you don't, and no one pins the blame on the whole Southern Christian's or be so authoritatively arrogant to order you to do so. You keep your peace but a northern Hausa/Fulani muslim can't have that luxury because he doesn't have the mouth and media to speak for him.
Admittedly, I think I like you, moreso your frankness to a good extent. Am glad you and I are having a reasonable discourse devoid insults and rancour, and that's because you are not like many of your northern brothers who fail to want to see or hear logical reasons.
Am sure you and I do not subscribe to violence and unguarded hatred coming from both divides.
However, since you made comparisons between volatile actions as obtainable in the North and what emanates in the South, I guess you will very well agree with me that your Northern brothers are very well likely to be volatile and attack innocent southerners even when unprovoked. And contrary to that, downsouth Southerners are very unlikely to attack Northerners unduly. When such attacks happens, it is usually as a reprisal attack after the Northerner was volatile. This is why we seldom hear of Religious riots in the South, but these are very common in the North.
Why is it so??
1. Religious Intolerance
2. Envy, bitterness and idleness of the greater Northern youths.
3. Inferiority complex. The average Northern youth feels inferior to a Southern youth, and feels insecure beside his/her southern counterpart while tending to refrain from making close ties. This tendency automatically breeds distrust and brews distant hatred. These are the subtle bane of an average Northern youth.
Am sure you will agree with me.

Whoever has ever lived in the north knows what you are saying is far from the truth. As a past corps member, I was privileged to know that corps members lived life in the comfort of their lodges, they never embed themselves in the larger society. Even those who teach in public secondary schools intermingle with a small fraction of people whose patterns of behaviour is not a good enough representative sample of the larger population. This is more so with google generation corps members you are probably a member of who go to their state of their PPA with preconceived and entrenched stereotypes that may be impossible to shed in a few months time. Receive some wisdom, young man, never count urself as those who have lived in the north.
But on a slip side, you speak quite intelligently and a lot different from 90% of an average Northern Muslim, so I will give you some slack and take you differently.
There are some very few like you out there in the North, who I can exonerate. But then, I know for sure (as I have seen in time past), when the chips are down in times of deadly riots unleashed on non Muslims, the very best you will do is stay aloof and not be vocal to condemn such acts of volatility and mayhem on human beings. This is of course of your fear. Those that are exposed in the north are so afraid and avoid the volatile youths (almajiris) out there on the streets when they go rampaging. You are careful not to condemn them. These have done more harm than good to the north. That's why the North has become so volatile because the exposed ones have failed to speak out and checkmate the volatile idle youths on the streets.
You and I know I speak the truth.

Well, you are entitled to your opinion because you desperately seek to defend our kin. But I speak from personal experience while living and serving in Kano. I escaped 3 deadly riots in the course of 4yrs. The same people that I used to help with money and clothes, the same were the ones that came to attack and loot and burn my house in the last riot.
An average northern Muslim only pretends but doesn't like a non Muslim and are likely to go volatile on slightest provocation or any chance to inflict mayhem even unjustly. An average Kano youth only relates with you based on what he can benefit from you. Same person u felt was amiable will be very volatile with so much hatred when bad situations present itself. I have seen loads of people killed by seemingly harmless Northern youths at various riots in Kano.
Kano resonate with me as a volatile city. I know what I say, and I speak the truth.
And point of correction, am not a young man. I bet you that I am a lot older than you. I am absolutely sure of that.
When I gained admission into university, you were probably still a toddler playing with sand. I don't mean disrespect here. But it is likely a fact.
Be careful not to assume you are older than people u have not seen or met.

Wallahi they do bro. But evil people whether muslims or otherwise, will always find reasons, not matter how deviant and distorted, to be evil. May God guide them, but by now, it should be more than obvious that, these people are the personification of evil, wickedness and ungodliness that they are, and not representative of the majority (over 90%) of peaceful and law abiding muslims. Bro if you have ever lived in the core north and interacted with the average Muslim northerners, you will know that the vast majority of us are intrinsically peaceful, peace-loving and law abiding. The few (less than 10%) that are violent, have unfortunately defined who we are! But that could be part of our trials related to the 70%-muamalat tests we have to pass here on earth, so God can get to " know who are true believers " that keep to the straight and narrow path of His religion despite avalanches of trials from within (Boko Haram, ISIS etc) and without ( the media sensationalization and use of the action of less than 1% violent muslim terrorists like BH and Isis to cancel and blanket-condemn over 1.5 billions peaceful and law abiding muslims). Bro I am not a believer in conspiracy theories but do u honestly think that it is just by coincidence and accidental that just after the attacks of 9/11, muslim terrorists started to spring up left, right and centre, all over the globe? Haba! Did those muslim terrorists just begin to realize that their religion is violent in 2001 (the year 9/11 happened)? And so almost every muslim community (Iraq, Afghanistan, Northern Nigeria, Egypt, Sudan etc) begin to witness eruptions of violent jihadists! This is all the more intriguing that no muslim country can manufacture a Kalashinakov! Haba, let us all start to utilize our number 6. Thank you bro for the genuine question you asked me. I could see its genuineness, believe me, coz both you and I products of our own milieu and could be shaped by what we constantly read in the papers, listen into from the radio or watch on TV. Thanks
Did you say over 90% of Northern Muslims are peaceful and law abiding? That's a Capital Lie.
I lived in Kano for 4yrs after NYSC, I survived 3 deadly riots in those 4yrs.
To say the truth, it is the reverse of what you say. Over 90% of average Northern Muslim has a violent tendency to kill at least provocation.

Na wa for Nairaland forum ooo.
Every Thread is full of tribal fights and abuses.
If you want to know the extent of tribal divide in Nigeria, come to Nairaland. This present generation of youths that know nothing about the Nigerian Civil war are just full of dirty mudslinging and tribal hatred.
I swear, if Nigeria was this divided during the civil war, Nigeria would have ceased to exist.
The Yoruba yoiths and Ibo youths both from Southern Nigeria have become cats and dogs with hatred, while the Hausa/Fulani youths from the North hates both Yoruba and Ibo youths. And both Yoruba and Ibo youths jointly hate their northern counterparts.
My question is: What has caused these high level hatred and tribal divide?
Nigeria is totally messed up with these level of hatred.

we shoudnt just blame the north alone cos the south is also guilty of this.i have seen some gate men who are christians and from the south having up to 15 children and such men will be earning only 10k.some even have concubines sef and the concubines will also have large number of kids for them. Its a nigerian thing not a northern thing.
Have u been to the North?
I know what I say when I said the North. You will see a Male begger in the North begging in one corner, and his wife with 4 little kids begging in another corner not far away. Their small children already being trained to be beggers, and before you know it, she is already pregnant with the 5th child.
These children grow up without schooling or a future. It is a normal thing for them.
And as the children grow up, they become independent in street life and become Almajiris. The next thing is to carry arms and become bandits and terrorists.
The North is the biggest problem of Nigeria by the singular reason of having too many children they cant fend for and their many myopic mindsets.
Family › Re: My Face-to-face Encounter With 'poverty' And His Four Children (photos) by CharleyBright(m): 11:27am On Nov 11, 2020
Short of Words.
But truth be told.... Why have many kids you can't fend for?
Rich people these days are settling for 2 kids or 3kids at most. Poor people these days are having 5 to 7kids, and they open their mouths to tell you the God that giveth will provide.
By end of the day, the children will suffer and pass thru hard lives and in most cases never make it to higher institutions.
As you lay your bed, so you shall lie on it.
The North should Stop breeding children they can't cater for.

All these brainless supporters of Trump are like brainless supporters of Buhari. They can never see anything wrong with the man.
When Jamal Khassuggi was brutally murdered in Saudi Embassy in Turkey, all fingers were pointing to Saudi Crown prince Salman.
Trump discredited US CIA report and findings that crown Prince of Saudi ordered the killing of Jamal Khassuggi only because he wanted to protect his personal business interests in Saudi. Today
crown Prince Salman is walking free and not facing trial only because Trump kicked against his prosecution.
That was a wicked criminal cover up by Trump for his selfish interest.

When many were being brutally killed by US Police and people protested with Blacklives matter, Trump stood by the police and kicked against the protests.
Today, same thing is happening In Nigeria. The Buhari govt is clamping down on end SARS protesters, many condemn Buhari, but same people support Trump for doing same.
Trump and Buhari are same, period.
Buhari would have refused to accept defeat just like Trump is refusing.
