Gunmen have kidnapped a former Commissioner for Higher Education in Nasarawa State, Clement Uhembe .

Uhembe , who is also a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Political Science at the Federal University, Lafia, was kidnapped at his Lafia residence, on Tuesday night .
The kidnappers had since reached out to Uhembe ’ s family , asking for a ransom of N 30m .


Confirming the incident to The PUNCH, wife of the victim , Amarya Uhembe , said the kidnappers, numbering about ten , hit the family ’ s residence and whisked the lecturer away .


She said , “ They ( gunmen) came at about 8 :30 pm and started knocking forcefully at the door while my husband was in the inner room . I moved close to the door to see who was knocking only to discover that they were heavily armed men . ”
The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, ASP Ramhan Nansel , who also confirmed the incident , said the Command had already drafted its men to the scene of the incident and efforts were on to secure the release of the victim .

The Federal Executive Council on Wednesday approved the reconstruction and rehabilitation of the Port Harcourt- Maiduguri Eastern Narrow Gauge .

The cost of the project was put at $ 3 . 02 bn.
The decision was taken at the weekly meeting of the council presided over by the President , Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd . ).
Minister of Transportation , Rotimi Amaechi , disclosed this to State House correspondents at the end of the meeting at the Presidential Villa , Abuja .

Amaechi also told reporters that the council approved the construction of a deep seaport at Bonny and a railway industrial park in Port Harcourt, both in Rivers State at the cost of $ 703 . 1 m .

He, however , said the two projects would be at no cost to the Federal Government , saying they will be funded through Public - Private Partnership arrangement.

He said the industrial park would gulp $ 241 . 2 m while the Bonny Deep Seaport will gulp $ 461 . 9 m .

The minister explained , “The Federal Executive Council has approved the award of contracts for the rehabilitation and reconstruction of the Port Harcourt- Maiduguri eastern narrow gauge railway , with new branch lines and trans -shipment facilities .

“ The council also approved the construction of a new deep seaport in Bonny , under PPP and the construction of a railway industrial park in Port Harcourt.

“ The railway line will be at the cost of $ 3 , 020 , 279 , 549 . The industrial park , which is under PPP, at no cost to Federal Government , will cost $ 241 , 154 , 389 . 31 . The Bonny deep seaport will cost $ 461 , 924 , 369 , at no cost to the Federal Government .

“The Port Harcourt to Maiduguri narrow gauge railway will have new branch lines : from Port Harcourt to Bonny and from Port Harcourt to Owerri are new lines .

“ There is another connecting narrow gauge to standard gauge at Kafanchan. There is a branch line from Gombe or before Maiduguri to Damaturu and Gashau . ”

Still on PPP, the Minister of Interior , Rauf Aregbesola , said the council approved the establishment of the Nigeria Correctional Service Shoe , Garment , and Leather Processing Factories in Aba , Abia State as well as Janguza, Kano State.

“ The benefit , beside the employment of Nigerians, is the opportunity for training of the inmates of our correctional facilities in Janguza, Kano State and Aba in Abia State.

“ The contract for full business skills compliance certificate is given to Messrs LG Investment Limited , a Nigerian company which is partnering with a Chinese company , Full Technology Incorporated from Beijing , China, ” he said .

Persons suspected to be thieves have burgled the Adamawa office of the privately-owned African Independent Television (AIT), based in Yola.

Chief Timawus Mathias, the Yola Head of the station, confirmed the incident to News Agency of Nigeria ( NAN) on Wednesday in Yola.

Mathias told NAN that the sad news was broken to him by the security man at the DAAR Complex.

According to the head of the station, some sensitive hardware were stolen by the suspected burglars.

“We have reported the matter to the Police and the security man was invited for investigation.

“And equipment so far discovered carted away include 2 pieces of 42 inch TV, One piece of 32 inch TV, one piece of DV Player and one Desktop computer set,” Mathias said.

Others items stolen, he said, included one piece of 2 Horse Power Water pump, Two pieces of Radio Studio Monitors and one piece of X 1000 KVA Stabilizer.

A Nigerian rapper based in the United Kingdom , Olawale Hassan popularly known as Goldie 1 , has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for raping a woman.

According to bbc . com , the 33-year - old , who lives at Falcon Avenue, Grays, Essex , attacked the victim in Southend in 2017 after claiming he was a music producer , officers said .

However , during his trial , he denied the three counts of rape and one charge of assault by penetration .

Essex Police has described him as “ manipulative and calculated ” .

Detective Constable Victoria De ’ ath, of the force, praised the woman , in her 20s , for her “ courage” in reporting the attack .

It was gathered that Hassan targeted the woman while she was out with a friend in February 2017. She turned down his requests for her number and to accompany him to his hotel room before he promised to get her home safely after her friend left .

Instead , he parked his car on the seafront and locked its doors when she tried to flee before attacking her . He later took her home where she called the police .
