I wonder why you are taking Asari Dokubo's decision to move his investments to Benin Republic so personally. Live and let live bro. There are many Nigerians leaving the shores of Nigeria everyday so what is the big deal if Asari does it?

@Post

I wish him all the best.
Bro, you are on point+1000! wink Every "looter" in Naija, aspire to have "investments" or already have "investments" abroad. It's not new or news. Afterall, did Ibori, Alams, lucky Joe/wife, Deiziani, Ibru(s), all our past military men from ranks of Brigadier upwards etc and some even lower ranked officers too not have "investments" abroad?. It's so normal/natural to do so because none of our power elite believe in Naija whatsoever never mind the hollow noises about "patriotism" or loving Nigeria till death even by some NLs grin. Denouncing Naija does not imply renouncing his citizenship either. Besides it's safer for him to live across the border and continue with his "looting" and other activities connected to Naija. Most of our people(elites) own properties in Cotonou and Porto-Novo including Obj and his cohorts. It is the Nigerian way to have "insurance" against "insecurity" etc.

I HAVE BEEN TO PARIS TWICE. STAYED IN A HOTEL NOT TOO FAR FROM GARE DU NORD TRAIN STATION. ALL THE PICK POCKETS HANGING AROUND THE STATION WERE BLACK MEN. IN FACT ONE OF THEM WOULDNT LEAVE ME ALONE. HE FOLLOWED ME EVERYWHERE I WENT. I HAD TO RUN AWAY FROM HIM EVENTUALLY. I TOOK HIM TO A STRIP CLUB. PAID FOR HIM AND BOUGHT HIM DRINKS AND TOLD HIM I WOULD BE BACK AND NEEDED TO GO TO THE TOILET. AND I MADE MY ESCAPE TO MY HOTEL. IN FACT THAT PARIS IS A DUMP. I WENT TO A RESTAURANT AND THEY SERVED ME RAW SNAIL TO EAT. ( DIDNT KNOW WHAT IT WAS AS THE NAMES IN THE MENU WAS NOT FAMILIAR ) AND THE TOILET WAS A HOLE IN THE GROUND ( SHALANGA ). THIS WAS CENTRAL PARIS TO
@^^ It is obvious you are not street wisegrin. gare du Nord is very close to Barbes in Paris and that says a lot about your environment- "dump" -Arabs(North Africans) and wretched francophone Africans roaming around. The hotel you stayed in is obviously a cheap Arab owned hotel close to the station hence the design of the toilet etc. You pay for what you get grin. Very close to the station are equally good/decent hotels to satisfy your "uneducated" taste of Paris or France wink. Sorry you met a hoodlum/hustler yet very unable to shake him off. Are you not a Nigerian? You even paid for him to "accompany" you to a club and your experience of French cuisine/restaurant is something else grin grin. I wish you better luck and interesting experience next time cheesy wink. I wonder how you'll manage in Brazil, Jamaica or South Africa? All very dangerous and violent places than sedate Paris or Lagos grin.

You guys have totally derailed the thread. We were talking of African movies and here are you talking about Hollywood.
@Sorry Bros grin. The "Hollywood" fixated addicts do not want us to think differently because of their false "yardstick"(Hollywood).

Pure lies Hollywood is not a racist. What about the likes of Denzil Washington, Samuel Jackson, Will Smith, Mogan freeman, Forest Whitaker, Halle Berry, Wesley Snipes, etc, who rake in many awards and still are making it big in Hollywood. I'm just asking though!!!

@^^ So because a few black actors are visible to you and receiving "awards" you now conclude there is no racism in Hollywood/ in America because Obama and Mitchele are in the White House? Sincerely, there's no point discussing this topic further because it's clear some of us in this forum actually do not understand the politics and culture governing Hollywood or any film industry everywhere even our own Nollywood.
What do you think of films by Afolanyan, Femi Odugbemi, Lancelot Imasuen, Don Pedro Obaseki, and some other producers from Nollywood I have not mentioned despite the "technicalities" and paucity of finance?

Who is the better Actress between Vivica Fox and Charlize Theron?
@^^ Truthfully, I have not seen their movies. My reasons are - I have since gone off western movies, except "black" films and a few exceptional "white" Hollywood films hence I have returned to the "source"- Africa for something more entertaining, inspiring and refreshing too(Nollywood) winkgrin. cheesy.
TV/MoviesRe: Are Nigerian Movies Actually The Best In Africa? by cheikh:

she will always be considered first in Hollywood above those two cos she's WHITE
@^^ Please don't mind them. It is obvious that baby-boy and Msauza do not know nor understand the cultural politics pertaining to the industry they are discussing or perhaps they are burying their head in the sand as usual. That's ok too if they want to live in denial. I wonder why they want to justify or force "others"- Indians and Africans to accept Hollywood as a "universal" standard/yardstick for films. The French and even the Swedes make better films than the Americans/Hollywood but for the language limitation yet they have their own film industry awards that rival Hollywood Oscars in grandeur and it's more prestigious/sexier too- "Cannes" film festival. The French have tried to finance/promote satellite African film industry in Francophone Africa but they have failed because the films are made in the "image"/mould of Western/European aesthetic cultural taste- grande epics etc and nothing to speak to the African aesthetic worldview. Nollywood with its inherent "technical" foibles will always trounce anything Western in the African domain and remain the Best whether Hollywood addicts like it or not.

Whether you like it or not, Hollywood will always be a pacesetter and modelled by any film industry outside the United States. Nollyhood actors themselves have recently teamed-up with Hollywood actors in the movie Dr Bello and hopefully its a dream of every Nigerian actor to feature in Hollywood movies.

TV/MoviesRe: Are Nigerian Movies Actually The Best In Africa? by cheikh:

You are missing a point here and your argument is irrelevant. We are speaking about the quality (The best) and not about who is making more money or who is producing more movies which sometimes does not make sense. Nollyhood movies still has a lot to improve, from picture, sound, cinematography and editing and besides most of their movies are recorded in the VCD format which freezes easily most of the time. The overuse of witchcraft and voodoo in most of their movies is very disturbing and the technology they use to depict such magical powers in practice is very amateurish and very insultive to our intelligence. The use of Part 1 , Part 2 and Part 3 to divide their movies is really unnecessary as they make the story long for no reason.
@^^ Please re-read my post again. I have not said that the "quality" is fantastic. Did I? Nevertheless, implied in the very subjective "quality" debate is an assumption that Nollywood is no good as demonstrated in your write-up above. Every watcher of Nollywood knows and is exasperated by the above mentioned technical faults nevertheless most of the stories they convey are compelling and very relevant to the consumers including your good self grin wink hence you are annoyed because of the "technicalities" etc grin grin. My friend relax. Many of us are willing to overlook those temporary technical faults most times because we know our shortcomings as a people without any technical "sophistication"/abilities given our general lack of resources. We should be a little mindful and generous of spirit to our compatriots who have taken the bull by the horns to do for self what the government or others cannot do- self employment(self taught), massive job creation, entrepreneurship and positive representation/promotion of Naija which our so called government officials/reps cannot do nor capable of doing(lootocracy). Bro, I very much understand and sympathise with your viewpoint because you are obviously nurtured/addicted to everything "Western"/Hollywood as your "standard"/yardstick that's not to say we do not acknowledge/accept some goodness from your worldview. "Quality" is a relative concept so we cannot be overly dogmatic and ascribing some "spurious" value to our own home grown industry which clearly is not competing with anybody. I believe Nollywood will improve immeasurably with time and with some of your "positive" criticisms taken on board they will surely be making some movies you'll find qualitatively good and perhaps attractive/conducive to your aesthetic taste too without the "voodoo" nor part 1, 2 and 3. grin grin. It's no biggie wink. Why are you so hung up about awards/validation by Hollywood(Americans)? I think the African world have actually validated the relative "quality" of Nollywood films by their massive popularity and consumption everywhere Africans(blacks) reside globally wink. To me the "Quality" debate is rather pseudo-intellectual and not exactly clear enough because your "technical" reasons may seem plausible but lacking in empathy and clear understanding of the environment in which those films are made/produced/marketed for our consumption. African awards are more meaningful for us and that is what matters including the financial rewards too hence it is a growing three hundred(300) million dollars industry.
TV/MoviesRe: Are Nigerian Movies Actually The Best In Africa? by cheikh: 7:55pm On Dec 26, 2012

Do not confuse viewership and quantity with the best. The question is " Are Nigerian movies actually the BEST in Africa?". My dictionary tells me that quantity is a number and the fact is; you can produce more but fail to produce one quality work. The same thing happens in India where many movies are produced within days at a low cost, but still fail to make it to the Oscar awards. I lived in New York in the US for two years and everytime African movies were released in the US cinemas majority of them happened to be from SA. While I was there I watched Catch a fire, Schuks Shabalala, Mr bones 1 and 2, Jerusalema played in the united states cinemas.

@^^Whaooo since when did Hollywood become our value system let alone the standard for Indians and Africans? My friend India is far bigger than USA in numbers of eyeballs watching movies and Africa via Naija perhaps bigger too. This talk about quality is not exactly right given the paucity of technology/finance available to our enterprising self taught film makers. Our stories are yet to be told. Hollywood is lacking in original stories but full of electronic rassmatazz/gimmickry grin. Perhaps the gimmicks are the interesting part for you hence the talk about elusive and very subjective "quality". We should stop comparing Nollywood to Hollywood. They are two different value/technical systems. We do not manufacture film props and equipments anywhere in Africa except perhaps in "white" South Africa- that says a lot about the history of the country/film industry. Nigeria after all acquired/started TV(Western NIgeria) first in Africa but has anything changed for the better? The South African films you are so in love with are just mere films mimicking Western aesthetics without much relevance to Africans who should be the focus/market place not faraway NY-USA chasing shadows hence Nollywood is making more money/relevant than RSA film makers "quality" or not. The stories are relevant/enthralling to majority of the African world including the diaspora. Please review your aesthetic view point perhaps you may learn to appreciate the inherent beauty of Nollywood without "technical" wizardry/gimmickry. They will acquire the knowhow soon so no big deal.

And how does the Western world receive 9ja music?
Truth is they don't. Have any of our major acts have headlining tours in the US or Europe. A big NO!!! The problem with us is that we haven't learn to present our entertainment as a thing of ingenuity and creativity.
Our artists are just a poor imitation of their US counterparts. If you could take your mind back to 2005 when MTV was launched in Africa,Will Smith, while performing his hit single then...."Switch" made very good use of the South African Zulu dancers. The South Africans were wise enough to show their culture on a global scale. Even Ludacris used them for the video of his hit single then "Pimping all over the world". Please,it's about time we do away with all the mediocrity we got in our entertainment industry and stop Joystick ridding foreign acts.
@^^ Why would the Western world receiving 9ja music be of great importance or be the "standard" for you? Is the naija market and the rest of the African world including the Americas not self sustaining/big enough? Inferiority complex and lack of self knowledge obviously is informing your viewpoint/world-view on the subject matter. Bros please relax Oyiboland/America is not usually the best standard/reference point for our collective growth/success grin wink. I love Nollywood warts and all grin grin wink. It is the best!. Burkinabes do produce some decent films financed usually by France but Nollywood is home grown and self sustaining without "external" or outside finance. Naija is a difficult place for many businesses let alone the film industry that have no support whatsoever including moral acknowledgement by the power mongers. The rest "competitors" like Hollywood, Bollywood etc have a lot of encouragement/acknowledgement by their home establishment/Government including the so called South African film industry/government. wink.

C.Adichie in this piece just want to be Igbo - its Igbo to support the war and blame Awolowo for Ojukwu's imprudent resolve to war. Nothing new in the piece just the same broad "day-lie" retailed to the Igbos of old and inherited by the Adichies of this new day. With myriad effusive documents exhumed by C.Achebe's memoir one would have expected C.Adichie to draw insights from them and be not just Igbo but human. She retailed the inherited lies she devoured and distance herself from documents which are candid witness of the war. I respect this piece as a literary show-off. I respect the piece as C.Adichie's opinion. I respect her right to remember differently. The only problem I ve with this piece is the laziness of C.Adichie or should I say the deliberate laziness of C.Adichie which makes this piece an excerpt from C.Achebe's memoir. The future is privilege to have some candid documents that will make the lie of the past to be JUST LIE
@^^ Are you for real? What else do you want her to be if not Igbo? Bro, you are definitely in danger of lacking "Empathy" as she wrote. I am an admirer of Fareed, but I think he needs to be told (reoriented) that our elites are not simpletons?

.........Umhhhhhhhhhhhh
@^^ Yes you are correct that they are star struck and actually simpletons grin grin. He'll never be taken seriously in his homeland(India) let alone they being star struck like the Nigerian so called elites. Academic certificates and money does not necessarily make one an "intellectual" or elite in its pure sense. In Naija we muddle things up and think everybody with money and a few dubious certificates in all manner of subjects qualifies one to have an "enlightened"/ "intellectual" output- the type that advance/shape a country into a viable nation. Unfortunately, there are no such characters around in Naija sad. Your skepticism and concern for our pseudo-elites are in order Bro grin.

Number is good but it's not the most important thing. Capability is the key word. What can you achieve with your weapons? Who rules the air space? Who dominates the ocean routes? What's the entire population of Israel not to talk of IDF yet has fought bitter wars with Egypt and entire Arab without being defeated?
@ Bros, your analogy/example is not exactly correct. The Arabs are not exactly as motivated. Only the Palestinians who live like Captive, hapless prisoners in their own land are motivated enough to want to die. The Israeli army are not exactly invisible despite the bottomless Aid/support from USA. The Party of God(Hizbollah-Lebanon) have since trashed that notion/demystify that pseudo-Goliath/David perspective/comparison. Bombing and killing "Prisoners"- (Gaza and West Bank) is not a good measure of strength. Is it? What are they fighting/defending with?

Will you read a po-rn magazine because you want to know the beginning and end of it all? One offensive picture is enough to make you throw it in the bin. Same with this book; one offensive paragraph is enough. We don't have to start reading nonsense just to prove we can read.
And by the way pastor sometimes we need to fight before we can become friends. It is good we are doing it in this way instead of carrying guns and bombs.
@^^ Bro, if I consciously pick up a po-rn magazine, I expect to be entertained and definitely will not find it offensive grin wink. It is a choice informed by knowledge hence my conscious action/expectation of the content therein. Lack of adequate/proper information and prejudice is actually dangerous to yourself and the "other". It is akin to the recent misguided/wicked actions of the "good" people of Aluu(Rivers state) against four students based on prejudice/misinformation. Most of the participants in the horrible act, did so merely on spurious "HEARSAY and PREJUDICE because they want to believe anything - Herd/Follow-Follow mentality. Nigerians have become very dangerously ignorant and somehow we seem to wallow/celebrate it. Prejudice is definitely not knowledge let alone Wisdom.
I wonder why you ascribe the "big" title "Pastor"maybe sarcastically/otherwise to my moniker/handlegrin? Perhaps, you mistakenly assumed I am Christian or not. Please, think again about your swift/quick judgement of a subject you perhaps know nothing about like "War", History and Naija Politics most especially if it pertains to personal memoirs/Opinions of Active participants in the events that happened in our so called beloved nation.
The Americans continue to write about their Civil War which ended many years ago from different perspectives yet the writers/authors are never harangued let alone exhorted to stop whining/ forget about it all, as if nothing happened in a so called "Fratricidal" war that ended merely "yesterday"-42years ago shocked. I guess the outrage about Achebe's "Opinions"/book is the unflattering mention of the great Awo.
Since when did Nigerians elevate some persons beyond close "Scrutiny" and above "Criticism" especially in a multi-cultural/national country(Nigeria) wink?. Is Nigeria a "totalitarian" country where "Scrutiny, Criticism and perhaps "scholarship" are not tolerated anymore because some people/persons may find such harmless observation threatening to their sense of being?. Bro, we should be a little mindful and charitable to the "other" especially if we are not too sure of what exactly transpired otherwise we may be accused correctly of being foolish and Prejudiced. I hope you get the drift of my thought. "Opinions" are not exactly "facts" and should not agitate and lure us to take insensible actions/conclusions like the people of Aluu wink cheesy. We should encourage Nigerians to tell their own stories however unsavoury it may be. It is part of our collective "history" wink.
Nothing let alone persons should be seen as SACRED especially in Nigeria. Nobody in Nigeria(dead/alive) merits such affirmation of "sacredness" whatever some of us may think cheesy.
PoliticsRe: Major General Mohammed Shuwa Shot Dead, By Gun Men! by cheikh: 2:29am On Nov 04, 2012

This is a tragedy of monuemental proportions. General Shuwa was not only an absolute gentleman but he was also perhaps the most respected, effective, disciplined, restrained and successful battle commander in the Nigerian Army during the civil war. He was in command of the 1st Division of the Nigerian army and it was the 1st Division that managed to defeat the Biafran Army and enter the east from the northern front.

Unlike many other commanders on both sides of the war, Shuwa was known for his immense compassion for the civilian population quite apart from his extraordinary courage and fighting skills. It is a matter of historical record that, unlike with other commanders, no massacres of civilians were carried out under him or by his 1st Division throughout the entire course of the war.

After capturing them he treated the Biafran soldiers, enemy combatants and the igbo civilian population with immense respect and remarkable compassion. This man was not just a profoundly good and humane person, he was not just a war hero, but he was also a great father, husband and family man. He was a very quiet man that consistently shunned the limelight and public office even though there is not one retired senior army officer in this country or politician, alive or dead, that did not revere him and hold him in the highest esteem.

He was not only one of General Yakubu's Gowon's most trusted and able officers and senior commanders during the war but he was also exceptionally close to and highly respected by other great and distinguished war-time commanders like General Olusegun Obasanjo, General Mohammadu Buhari, General TY Danjuma, General Benjamin Adekunle, General Adeyinka Adebayo and General Ibrahim Babangida. They all looked up to General Shuwa just as did those of us in the younger generation and who are not in the military.

I should mention the fact that again as a measure of this great man's level of compassion it is on record that during the northern officers counter-coup of July of July 1966 he saved the lives of many igbo offices by locking up the armoury and refusing to give up the key after the mass killing of igbo officers started all over the country. At that time General Shuwa was Commander of the 5th Battalion in Kano. Had it not been for his timely intervention and efforts and the efforts of the late Major General James Oluyele, who was his Second in Command at the time, many more igbo officers that were stationed in Kano, would have lost their lives that night.

Yet there is far more to the story of this great man than just his efforts, as gallant and indispensible as they were, during the civil war. He went on to live a long and distinguished life of honour, duty, selfless service and distinction after the war. I mourn with my brother Hon. Yusuf Tuggar and his dear wife who have lost their father-in-law and father respectively in such tragic and cruel circumstances and I mourn with the Shuwa family of Maiduguri for this great loss. If I were to ever use the great Mark Anthony's words when he saw Julius Caesar's bleeding and dying body after he was cut short by Brutus and the other Roman traitors this is the time that it is appropiate to do so. For I can say of General Mohammadu Shuwa as Mark Anthony said of Caeser that "here lies a Caesar, after whom comes no other".

We have lost a true ''titan'' and a living ''immortal'' all rolled into one. He was a great son of Nigeria and a glorious shining star and we must do all that we can to honour him even in death. May the Lord have mercy upon General Mohammadu Shuwa and forgive him of all his sins. May his good deeds speak for him before God. May the Lord welcome him into the hosts of Heaven. May his beautiful and compassionate soul rest in perfect peace. And may the Lord avenge him of all those that saw fit to cut short his precious life

@OP, There is a topic on NL " Nigerian youths are lazy and do not read"-El Rufai.

Well, none of the so called protagonists- for or against Prof. Achebe have read/seen the now "famous" book. Some commentators have actually declared that they'll never read the book let alone encourage anybody to read the book they seem to hold very strong opinion on. Is it any wonder our country is backward? We do not think, read let alone dialogue with ourselves hence "close mindedness" amongst Nigerians seem to be the norm. How do you form/hold a strong opinion on a book you've never seen/read based on uninformed second hand opinions of half baked pseudo-intellectuals and qwasi politicians of the Nigerian ilk/variety. We are in deep trouble indeed sad. The book is clearly an opinion which the author or anybody is entitled to(freedom of speech/thought) of one individual(Achebe) but does that make him the final speech writer or mouthpiece of the alpha and omega/ for everyone of us? Please we should learn to chill a bit and relax. An opinion of an individual should not be the beginning and end of a story. I think that the brouhaha over such an individual opinion because it is "Achebe", only demonstrates/expose/indicate the parlous state of our national education system especially the absence/paucity of "History" as a redemptive subject for national cohesion. We are truly a troubled country lacking any sense of History nor are we willing to have a conversation/talk with each other without acrimony. Are we lazy, thoughtless or down right mischievous or what?

If there were a 100,000 youths in each state in Nigeria who have read diverse books of History, Government and culture and know our right from wrong believe me Nigeria won't have all the likes of GEJ, El-Rufai and OBJ in power because we would have long used our intellectual rights to flush them out.

Nigerian youths of Today only follow the crowd. 99.9% of them know absolutely nothing aside Sports, music, movies and Fashion.

They come screaming when they receive some silly broadcast of their blackberry and swallow every silly news hook. Line and sinker without taking out time to reason for a few seconds.
@^^Gbam+1000! Bro, you are very correct. Our so called youth and students spend more time involved in backward, negative and unproductive "cultist" activities. Students in serious environments usually are aware and get involved/animated by national/local politics. Our students instead are enthused by mundane issues/objects like BB, FB, Rapes, latest gimmicks, fashion and gossip.

Yes,it is war and you have to subdue the enemies by any means necessary,i hope that answers you right since you don`t want to use your brain.
@^^ Gbam!+100 grin. It is the general lack of intellectual rigour on the part of many young Igbo young persons that is troubling and shocking. It is as if there is a general agreement not to think creatively let alone critically wink. Sincerely, it does not bode well for the Igbo if the majority are haughty and refuse to think laterally and strategically. I am afraid indeed.

@^^ Please revisit topics and my write-ups/comments on Biafra/Awo. You'll come away with a profound knowledge that I have actually made similar/Same comments here on NL pertaining to Awo/Biafra and Nigeria. Never mind small minded ignorant persons on NL who know nothing about War/Politics let alone about Nigeria nor their own backyard(Biafra) grin. The gentleman will be vilified as usual grin. They should learn to read and learn from the salient mistakes made, that hastened the inevitable demise of Biafra led by lazy presumptuous so called leaders. Ojukwu and the fighting foot soldiers were perhaps the only innocents/sincere persons in Biafra.

There's a standard in Aviation, and No institute will give him a license if he's not compitent, hell an instructor will not even send him solo. Jets are kinda fast compared to the 172's he got his PPL on, the problem I think is him piloting a jet without a co-pilot.
@^^ Bro, your point is plausible but we are talking about "Naija" not other places you may be thinking of grin. Actually, there are standards in every sphere of life in Nigerian officialdom but do Nigerians adhere to the "standards/rules"? Take your pick wink grin

^^^Only several years ago stats released by he central bank indicated the opposite of what you show, with the SE having the lowest poverty rate in the country.

As the World Bank indicated in an article somewhere here statistics on poverty in Nigeria are VERY unreliable.

Funny...the GDPs statistics provided here are at serious odds with the poverty statistics by Nigerian Stats, for a number of states.
@^^ Sis nnenna.1, pls do not take any figures coming out Nigeria by Nigerians seriously. We do not have any definitive population figure(s) for the country. It is all "guesstimate" or politically motivated figures. We are not serious about development or progress.

Rather than complain about headway not being made, why don't we all make suggestions? I'm busy I the kitchen at the moment, but I'll be sure to return and assist Jarus. Others should do the same.
