@^ The house is Islamic/Maghreb(architecture) inspired kind of house. Most of the house may not necessarily be very expensive. The owners of the houses are just imaginative/creative. They did things their own way and not follow the crowd as most Nigerians do. They let their "desire" and imagination/creativity to flourish and be interpreted architecturally by clever use of space and decor. Nigerians are conformists/conservative- Follow- Follow mentality wink.

No one is celebrating mediocrity. Naw tell me who can perform d magic of revitalising our rail system wt d wand u xpect. Dat can only be @ d xpense of other aspects of d economy and Infrastructure. All of u here playing holier dan thou, memebers of ur immediate and Xtended family contributed 2 ds in one way or the other. U celebrate rubish in d midst of plenty wen dat rubish is somtin compared 2 the no rubish @ all. The economics say therz room 4 improvement. U people shuld stop ranting like d mad man who complaind dat GEJ hs done notyn becos he did not put air condition on d streets..
@^^Bros, Why do you ask "who can perform d magic of revitalising our rail system with d wand u xpect"? Well in that question lies our national malaise as a people. So you elect/appoint so called leaders/ office holders of various portfolios with accompanying "budget" to match/ execute projects and you sincerely do not expect/demand of them to perform/"magic"? Na wao undecided. Why do you blame the "victims" of bad governance using pseudo-intellectual excuses that "we" inadvertently contributed to the general degeneracy pervasive in Nigeria?. That, the economist magazine/writer said "therz is room 4 improvement" after actually condemning the rail transport/quality of ride etc, you actually took it as a compliment and perhaps we should tolerate very low quality/service as ok because in your view we are complaining because some of us desire/ want GEJ to "put air condition on d streets". Na waooo for you!. Hmmmm you are entitled to your opinion. That is the beauty of democracy Nigerian style and indeed everywhere grin wink.

This article is been eulogised now, I hope tomorrow when this same outfit brings up another unfavourable report you people will not turn back on them and start saying western agenda.

A Nigerian travelled from Kano to Lagos with horrible experiences and even interviewed other passengers and also took pictures. People are castigating him for telling us his experience and for saying it as he saw it. They are telling him to rejoice that he was even able to take a train at all. Well, why won't we tell him to rejoice, after all our nation has been trying to produce 6,000 mw of electricity, that Heathrow airport uses daily, all these years without much success after sinking billions of dollars.

Our collective psyche has been bullied into submission and that is why we will continue to manage and hail mediocrity. It was when my well-travelled bosses told me that Khartoum in Sudan (a desert mind you & at war) is far ahead of any city in Nigeria, that is when I knew we have celebrated this mediocrity for too long.

Gbam!+1000. I can confirm your bosses' observation. Mediocrity and general lack of quality in many spheres of our life in Nigeria has damaged our collective psyche indeed. Anywhere corrosive Corruption is as pervasive and natural as it is in Nigeria, taken for granted/accepted, you are bound to expect a people coerced to celebrate/accept rubbish in the midst of plenty. The amount of money used to rehabilitate the rail is actually less than the unaccounted so called "security vote" of our erstwhile Governors undecided let alone that of the Presidency. The food budget is even larger than the rail rehab grin. Some of us may say half bread is better than none but that is not good enough in this day and age. wink huh. We must get a grip and see things in the right perspective not instinctively rejoice like demented freed prisoners and condemn those who refuse to accept mediocrity in whatever guise as the norm/standard.

Mr,wake up, this is the year of our lord 2013 AD,this is not 1966. Things have changed since then, you would be suprised by just how much they have.
@Bro, I don't have the strength to argue let alone rehash my thoughts for your benefit since you seem to not understand my stance/opinion on this matter if any. I suggest you re-read your own earlier opinion that the Igbo should look at the bigger picture/hidden agenda behind the Op/mischievous propaganda.. Perhaps,Onlytruth spelt it out better for you to understand what I wrote. There is no need for haughtiness but serious reflection and preparation for the "fire" "Next Time". Perhaps it has not dawned on you that Nigerians of every hue Hate each other for reasons they cannot explain to you and I. Nigerians trot out all manner of spurious reasons/prejudice to justify their inherent dislike/hate for their neighbours. Sincerely, I do not understand why some Nigerians masochistically wish for One Nigeria whereas they inherently dislike/hate their so called compatriots passionately. Why the pretences and ill will which actually undermines whatever "nationhood" desires some of us foolishly proclaim as if nations are built on mere wish and loud proclamation alone undecided huh. We are not serious as a people in the project of constructing/building a "Nation"out of a mere shell/country called Nigeria as it is now. Are you not tired of the usual complaints/negativities inherent in the country? It is burdensome and exhausting. Nobody has given me any convincing reasons for us to be together yet I cannot count on any form of protection or sincerity of friendship/love from our fellow Nigerians either. We seem to be energised/animated whenever the opportunity to discredit or "PHD" fellow citizens appears. It is almost an automatic/instinctive reflex. I tire oo. Most of them could not settle in the hinterland because they are not sure of their origins hence they remained where ever they were dumped/settled along the West African coastline to South Africa wink.

dont even know how to respond to the op question because it is weird. losing identity to the arabs because am bearing ibrahim? seriously. how does bearing ibrahim change my appearance to arab. no one has ever asked me if i was arab but are you a muslim question. op displays same ignorance as the americans who belief arab means muslim.

am hausa, and the only way to prove it is to speak hausa, simple, no need for long explanation. have you ever meet a real arab man speak yoruba? so y should people doubt whether u are yoruba or not when u can speak d yoruba lang. so when u speak yoruba, they still believe u are arab because of ypur first name? wonders shall never end.

u should ask y are the yoruba losing dia cultures to islam instead. do u have a problem with arabic or arabs? which one.
@^^ Your logic may be correct but the OP is right in the sense that Islam and Christianity are inherently depriving some of our people the opportunity to appreciate their original home grown culture predating the "cultural conquest" by "foreign" faiths/names Hausa, Yoruba, Igbo or not. The Hausa obviously have lost much of their culture unlike the Fulani and Kanuri. The dominant culture/values holds sway over the conquered subjects everywhere hence English/European names and Islamic inspired names predominate in our domain. In order to understand the full import of the OP's viewpoint - visit Sudan and notice how they(Islamist) tried to impose such names on their none muslim citizens hence the added grouse against the Khartoum regime by numerous secessionist groups. The South Sudan have gone already July 09/12, Dafur and the Nubians are not exactly happy in Egypt and Sudan either wink grin.. Nigerians despite our gra gra and noisy characteristics are inherently Docile and compliant to anything foreign.

Those races i mentioned above are different people with different cultures, geographical locations, mentality and melanocyte proportion. Still they belive in one USA.
@^^ Your USA history lesson sounds very plausible but you forgot to add that Nationdo not just happen based on Wishful thinking. Nation states spring/happen- they are defined, articulated, informed, constructed and infact most times fought for it to come into existence hence you are able to see USA and the rest of Western Europe as Nation states without self reflection over your ill informed assumptions about USA. Knowledge is good but half baked knowledge is atrocious/dangerous perhaps in your desirable optimism you overlooked the importance of national ideology and War in the creation of a true Nation since we have deliberately refused to acknowledge our differences etc in our Nigerian domain. We glibly and foolishly wish our history away while the USA you admire have actively used her concocted history to inspire and generate an almost "psychopathic" frenzy and loyalty in her citizens. Such nationalistic zeal/belief in Nation is man-made by intelligent ideologues/minds of every hue in a given society. That is the job of serious Intellectuals who construct/articulate the "Nation" building mission in any serious place the world over. Please look around you and study harder and reflect further on your historical knowledge and lessons. We learn everyday and we can never be too old to learn. Every history or story in our domain cannot be wished away because Nigerian do not want to confront their inherent "demons"- Tribalism,Wickedness, Laziness/lack of serious intellectual rigour, Gullibility and general Poverty of spirit which translates into lack of Empathy for the "Other" yet we wish for "ONE" Nigeria as "Nation" instead of a mere country. We find it very difficult to acknowledge our inherent prejudice/hate for each other especially if the other is of a different "Tribe" or town/place. We have to be serious and Purposeful as a people in order to create a Nation out of the numerous(over 300) ethnic nationalities. Do we really have Men and Women with Vision and Big Ideas in our domain never mind those we foolishly ascribe the word "intellectual" to in the Nigerian domain? USA is a Nation firstly Articulated, Envisioned, Constructed and Ideology Forcefully implemented by Serious dispassionate ideologues of Anglo-Saxon race over the "Weaker" races around them. That is the USA world you and perhaps me too undecided admire. That's how Nations come into being and not by denial of national "history"/stories that may have some redemptive/therapeutic impact on our "sick" and delusional country.

Now I am beginning to see clearly that jonathan's increase in Oil price goes far beyond the subsidy and government improving the lives of Nigerians crap he was spreading.

Now I can see exactly what Jonathan is up to. He probably wants Nigeria to collapse leaving the North and West standing solely, while probably the South east is merged with the South-South. The continuous attacks by Boko haram in the North on Christians is just to bring division amongst even the very same people of the North and those of the West.

I think he probably have promised the South-South and South-Eastern governors that the chunk of the 'secret' money removed from oil subsidy will be to develop the region. Dieazi and Okonjo both are from the South-south and South-Eastern region respectively and the were the arrow heads of that policy. Sanusi only was used to speak on the Economy benefits to Nigerians.

I SMELL A CIVIL WAR!!!
@^^^ Your imagination is very colourful and very fertile indeed. There is oil also in the South West(Ondo and Lagos states). I guess there is oil in the Lake Chad Basin and Perhaps Sokoto axis too. There will be no War if gullible Nigerians from the South West/the rest of the South decide to go their separate ways. Who will be doing the fighting? What justification will the "potential" war fighters have to engage in such futile and self destructive enterprise. Presently Nigeria cannot contain/defeat small but effective insurgents in the North/South of the country let alone being able to contain a potential restive Southern collective. War is not easy or a dancing jamboree bro. Easy with your rich imagination grin wink. Nevertheless you may get your wish. I hope not for your sake cheesy. Presently, the most "patriotic" Nigerians are our "looters" of our common wealth/patrimony hence the shrill voices we hear from them occasionally. They have an investment/intrinsic reflex to protect "sickly" Nigeria as it is, because the bulk of their wealth/loot is from the inherent chaos perversive everywhere in the country, There is power and "Wealth" in Chaos for a small band of crooks ruling collective Nigeria as it is.

The highlighted ^ is one of several reasons that "Peaceful" protests in the South West zone consistently Fail and is usually perceived as Rowdy, Violent, Incoherent and quickly degenerate into self destructive activities e.g. the negative preponderance of "Area Boys" activities during the Oil subsidy/Occupy NIgeria protests. I agree "positively cautious" is good way to approach the situation for sure. By the way, I would prefer stronger intra west african trade as our primary means of foreign investment over east or west, but I guess that really isnt practical yet.
@^^ Bro, you are correct but I must remind you that the ECOWAS treaty/protocol demands free movement of trade/movement across borders. Unfortunately, Nigeria somehow contrived to violate it on a daily basis. I hope you remembered that even Jerry Rawlings of Ghana actually complained about our general/constant violation of the spirit of the treaty. Please take a road trip from Lagos/ across West Africa for you to see what I'm trying to point out to you. Nigeria does not seem to understand fully her role/strength nor the importance of economic domination/"warfare". A lot of our neighbours, would rather import from faraway lands including Europe for goods/services they can easily get from Nigeria. They are genuinely weary/afraid of our very greedy corrupt and inept Immigration, Customs&Excise, Police, Soldiers and all manner of other agencies/Wahala on our roads. Believe me I have witnessed and interviewed some citizens of our neighbouring countries and their opinion(s) of Naija is not flattering let alone wholesome/positive at all. In my "common sense" and rudimentary knowledge of economics etc, I would think that it makes good economic/political sense for Nigeria to actively court and promote intra Naija and INTRA West African trade than we are presently doing by neutralising our "saboteurs" of business/country on our roads/ borders and en route to "Mile Two"/ Lagos. Sincerely, I do not see any harm if our neighbours use or engage in their business transactions in Naira just like many countries of the world especially the Caribbean Islands to South America on a daily basis use the US Dollar. That is just one of the many ways you encourage/gain influence over your smaller/weaker neighbours. So far, only R.P. Benin somehow has "fallen" cheesy for our quasi-economic influence via smuggling and trading in petrol products & et al. Our story as a country is not pretty in the sphere of external trade beyond OIL. We could do better and not just as a dumping ground for South African companies/goods & services. Nigerians undergo so much hassles/hurdles to export locally produced goods/products because our people/officials mischievously place unnecessary obstacles on our enterprising entrepreneurs/business persons. I have witnessed these "wicked" saboteurs of progress/the economy in action like most Nigerians must have observed/witnessed daily wink. grin. Presently, we are nowhere near engaging let alone dominating our neighbours. It's only in our ever fertile imagination/fantasies that we think of our country as "Giant" of this & that grin grin. We can do better than we are presently doing even within Naija/across our land borders. There are so much business opportunities/market within and across our borders too for Naija to conquer/dominate if only we have the "will" to do the right thing administratively/Officials will Free us and others grin wink. It is very practical indeed. Presently if I remember correctly Nigeria has some investment in the cement industry of R.P.Benin.

Thank you. You have hit the nail squarely on the head. Has our culture changed? Has the culture and values which exposed us to exploitation from the west changed? If it hasnt, why do we expect that our engagement with the Chinese will be different than it was with the West. They are here for business, not charity.

1. Leaders who will sell out Nigerians for a bribe at every influential position. Check.
2. Deep seated tribalism that prevents us from coming together and electing competent people. Check.
3. Low level of civic duty where we dont really care when injustice is done to others, as long as we escape. Check.

This is why Rossike's optimism bothers me.
@^^ I understand your reticence/reservations but Rossike's reasoning on the topic is not wrong and he is not saying that we bend over backwards for "abuse" either.
Any relationship between the "weak" and the "strong" will always be fraught with inherent "dangers". Can we generally say that our long "romance" with the "West" have yielded "desired" or "favourable" results whatever we mean by that? I guess that our desires/wants are for "materials" or tangible investments that will impact on the majority of our people far more than what we see around us now undecided. Nobody on this forum believes that the Chinese are altruistic let alone because they are in love with us either wink grin.
As for your nos:1-3 reasons, whose fault is it that we cannot get our "act" together? I do not hold our so called "leaders" wholly responsible for our inherent lack of cohesiveness or general lack of discipline but everyone of us have some responsibility to do the right thing. Is that not what civic responsibility is all about? Bro, we cannot blame others for our inherent laziness or stupidity. It's not pretty nor sexy whichever way we look at it. Rossike is right to be optimistic and positively cautious I guess.
