Yes there may have been some bureocratic delays but it had been over stretched for the woman to start lamenting. The poster that said personel cost cannot ve tampered with is not living/working in Naija. Has he wondered why it took the PS FMOH over a year to bring out an explanatory note on skeeping, has he wondered why the PS FMOH just realised that some consultants have not been doing their work thar prompted him to release a circular on 4/08/2015. Bros a lot happens in the teaching hospitals and FMCs. That is why NARD is calling for their probe.

In the hospital where l work (federal TH), as a patient is being discharged he/she is collecting his/her balance that same day or any day they wish to do so. If any procedure is cancelled you request for your money and you get it same day if you want.

A lot of rot goes on in our tertiary hospitals and PMB MUST FIX IT

HealthBirth Defects: Are You Pregnant Or Planning To? What You Need To Know! (pics) by ChelseaDr(op):
l was moved to open this thread after reading through the thread on: "Woman delivers a faceless baby in Aba". This thread is dedicated to all ladies especially those planning to get pregnant and those who are still at the early stages of their pregnancy (i.e. within 3 months) and to all those planning to step into the shoes of fatherhood.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO) Fact sheath updated in April 2015, about 276,000 newborns die within 4weeks of their birth due to birth defects. Birth defects is a major cause of chronic disability and the psychological impact on both the individual and his/her family is unquantifiable.

What are the causes of birth defecs?
Surprisingly, in about 50% of cases of birth defects the causes are unknown. Most of these defects happen within the first three months of pregnancy. This is because the different organs and systems that make up human beings form within tjis period. That is why for those that are planning to get pregnant and those whose pregnancies are still very early, the things you take in form of drugs at this stage will have a leading impact on what happens to your baby. So beware!!!.

However there are identifiable risk factors and causes in the remaining 50%. Some of the known causes/risk factors include: genetic mutations (hereditary), advancing maternal age (especially women aged 35 years and above), drugs, nutritional deficiencies (by extension, poverty), infections, exposure to harmful substances in the environment, etc.

Genetic problems:

This is peharps the commonest cause of birth defects. Some foetuse (babies in the womb) inherited some abnormal genes from their parents and by no fault of theirs become abnormally formed if they survive till birth. Some of these genetic problems (mutations) is commoner among those who tend to get pregnant after the age of 35 years. More so because after age 35, bith te quality and quantity of the eggs begin to decline and the chances of giving birth to "abnormal" babies increases. The import of this is for women to try as much as possible to complete their family size before 35 years. ....Yes l know na naija we dey ooo..!!

Drugs
This is another notable cause of birth defects. NOT all drugs are safe in pregnancy. While some are safe after 3 months others are outrightly contraindicated within the first three months. For instance drugs like sulphadoxine-pyrimethamine (e.g. fanaidar...with due respect to Swipha....as this is just to pass an information).Fansidar is an important drug given to pregnant women after three months (first trimeater) to PREVENT (NOT TO TREAT) malaria in their babies and should be repeated EVERY MONTH untill delivery. Fansidar SHOULD NEVER EVER be taken within the first three months (first trimester). This is because it cause birth defects in babies when given within 3months as the organs are being formed. This is because it makes folic acid useless and folic acid is needed for normal brain and spinal cord formation.

Other drugs include anti-epilepsy drugs, some anti-hypertensive drugs like ACE inhibitors, drugs to treat depression and anxiety disorder e.g valium-5, etc. Most importantly alcohol and cigarette smoking. Alcohol notably causes facial defects while cigarette smoking causes small babies, abortion and premature deliveries and even death of baby inside the womb.

Nutritional Deficiencies

Deficiency or excess of some micro/macro elements in food also causes birth defects. Notably among these is FOLIC ACID. It is recommended that if you are planning to get pregnant start taking folic acid one tablet daily three months before getting pregnant and continue taking it through out pregnancy. It is needed for normal structural formation within the first three months and also for blood building throughout pregnancy. Most of the common routine drugs contain folic acid and so pregnant women should NOT joke with their routine drugs. Poverty is a major impediment as many may not have access to antenatal care where they can get these drugs free. So the government of the day should make true their campaign promise of making efforts to reduce infant mortality to 3% and maternal mortality by 70% by providing free maternal and child health for Nigerian women and children.

Environmental hazards

Exposure to some pesticides may also result in virth defects. Some chemicals may also be direct causes. Remember the outbreak of miscarriages and congenital deformities that greeted the aftermath of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki atomic bomb attack.

Congenital deformities are real. They are not due to witches and wizards from the village (we cannot rule that out any way) but we have to play our own part by minding what we take during pregnancy....the time to act is NOW!

PoliticsProbe Teaching Hospitals; Resident Doctors Tell Buhari by ChelseaDr(op): 9:26am On Aug 04, 2015
Doctors stethoscope
Doctors, under the aegis of the National Association of Resident Doctors, have called on President Muhammadu Buhari to carry out a forensic audit of the 54 federal tertiary hospitals in the country.

The NARD President, Dr. Prince Dan-Jumbo, who spoke to journalists in Lagos on Monday, said the audit would help to clear or establish allegations of mismanagement of funds and inflated personnel spending that the association leveled against the management of some teaching hospitals.

He stated that the call was part of the association’s resolutions at the end of its National Executive Council meeting held at the weekend at Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital, Ile-Ife, Osun State. The meeting had the theme, ‘A vibrant residency training programme: An imperative for national development.’

Dan-Jumbo accused chief medical directors of 34 federal health institutions of disobeying a circular issued by the Federal Government that skipping should be implemented for doctors as it was being done for health workers.

According to him, the non-implementation of the circular is responsible for the pockets of strike by resident doctors in tertiary institutions.

Dan-Jumbo said, “Some management of some teaching hospitals have claimed that they do not have funds to pay resident doctors who are supposed to benefit from the policy. But our parent body — Nigerian Medical Association — has directed that these institutions which claim they don’t have the financial backing to commence payment to open their records for forensic personnel audit, they are yet to do so.

“ NARD also wrote to the Ministry of Finance in the past administration that they should audit these hospitals, we were rebuffed by the Federal Ministry of Health to go home and face our studies. But we cannot continue an era whereby people who have been given the mandate to manage these institutions now turn them to private business when Nigerians are in dire need of health care.

“As doctors and stakeholders in the sector who are willing to render service, we cannot fold our hands and watch innocent Nigerians die over the greed and selfish interest of management of these institutions. That is why we are calling on our members to engage with these institutions so as to know their true financial strength and not to ask for any bail out.”

The president warned that if the management of the affected hospitals refused to negotiate with doctors, the ongoing strike might continue until their demands were met.

HealthMOTHERS! What's Your Baby's Sleeping Position? by ChelseaDr(op): 12:04am On Jul 29, 2015
Mothers in the house, this might sound shocking to you. Have you ever pondered over what position that is best for your baby for sleep....or you think it doesn't matter? Yes it does. If l should ask you now what position you think is best for your baby for sleeping i'm sure your answer will probably be on the stomach or on the side. This happens to be the commonest practuce so far.

Studies have demonstrated that sleeping on these positions increases the risk of Sudden Infant Death Synrrome (SIDS). I'm sure you would have heard stories where a mother and her infant played at night only for the mother to wake up and notice the baby's lifeless body...this is not our portion IJN. SIDS is the death of an infant without any identifiable cause.

What then is the best sleeping position for babies? The best position is to allow your babies sleep on their back. Studies have shown that this position reduces the risk of SIDS when compared to other positions.

It is also recommended that babies share the same room with adults but not the same bed
. I do hope you will put this to use and also spread the message to all.

PoliticsRe: Braking:::dieziani Is Presently In A State Of Coma...... by ChelseaDr(m): 11:10pm On Jul 28, 2015
I don't think this story is true. This is because NOBODY will shave a patient's hair simply because you want to give such patient chemotherapy, NO it is not done anywhere in the world.

Yes, one of the commonest side effects of chemotherapy is HAIR LOSS but it does not happen just by taking a shot of chemo. Dezieani's hairs wouldn't have all been lost by this trip.

A patient can enter into coma when inappropriate dose of ANY medication is given not just chemotherapy drugs alone...including common pain relief agents.

Cancer does not just kill suddenly, it does so over time and the signs would have been very obvious before the patient dies.

So based on the above l dont think the story is true. I stand to be corrected anyway

You are wrong.

However, the most important thing to remember is the capacitation, which is the sperm's ability to fertilize an egg.
...sofly softly.....you were too harsh @ the bolded.

Meanwhile Dim007 wasn't completely wrong because beyond 72 hours sperm's ability to fertilize the egg decreases rapidly. Haven said that sperm can stay up to 7 day (yes 7 days) if conditions are favourable.

Capacitation is not the sperm's ability to fertilize the egg, strictly speaking (except in lay men's terms). It is actually the changes the sperm must undergo before fertilization will take place. These changes are enhanced by substances produced in the woman's body.

Ps: Babycenter made that statement because they were responding to a question from someone who is not a health professional (lay person) so as to pass their message.
HealthRe: 10 Little Known Facts About Menstruating That Might Surprise Some Girls by ChelseaDr(m): 5:22pm On Jul 27, 2015
No 9 is very true. It is a disease condition. It happens to some people where they will experience blood in their urine during their period (menstrouria), some will also be coughing out blood (cyclical haemoptysis), nose bleed (cyclical epistaxis), some will be seeing blood while going to to*let and some may even have convulsion during their period..... This disease condition is called endometriosis. Don't wish your enemy this condition because it reduces that person's quality of life.

There are explanations to why this happens and have been confirmed by several studies.
PoliticsPolice: Investigation Into Forgery Of Senate Rules Inconclusive by ChelseaDr(op): 2:29am On Jul 27, 2015
By Tobi Soniyi, Yemi Akinsuyi and Damilola Oyedele in Abuja

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has said it has not concluded its investigations into the alleged forgery of the Senate’s Standing Order, adding that no copy of its report had been handed to President Muhammadu Buhari as reported in some sections of the media.

Speaking to THISDAY yesterday on the purported report, the Force Public Relations Officer Emmanuel Ojukwu described as false the news report that the investigation into the alleged forgery had been concluded and a report submitted to the president by the police.

A news story at the weekend claimed that the president had received a copy of the police report last week, confirming that the Standing Rules used to inaugurate the Eighth Assembly were forged.

In the story, the police were said to have recommended the prosecution of those found culpable of forging the rules, which were used in the election of the Senate President, Senator Bukola Saraki, and his deputy, Senator Ike Ekweremadu on June 9, 2015.
The report was said to have indicted the management of the National Assembly, especially the clerk, Salisu Maikasuwa, among others, and recommended the prosecution of the suspects.

However, Ojukwu told THISDAY that the investigation was still ongoing, adding that no report was submitted to the president.
“I want to state categorically that the investigation into the allegation of forgery at the Senate is still ongoing. We have not concluded it yet, so where did the media get the information that not only has it been concluded but handed over to President Mohammed Buhari.

“The investigation is still ongoing and whenever it is ready, we will make it available to the public. The media report that we have concluded the investigation into the case is false and should be disregarded,” he said.

Also commenting on the story, a Senator said he expected the police, being part of the executive arm of government, to recognise the separation of powers, which could invalidate their findings.

He added that if there were any alterations to the Senate rules, they must have been done by the civil servants in the National Assembly and not the senators who had not even been sworn-in to review the rules.

Acting on a petition by Senator Sulaiman Hunkuyi of the All Progressives Congress (APC), the police had on July 6 quizzed Maikasuwa over the alleged forgery of the standing rules of the upper legislative chamber.
The petition alleged that some parts of the 2015 rules were different from the one ratified by the Sixth Senate in 2010 and was used by the Seventh Senate in 2011.

The police, on the strength of the petition, had subsequently quizzed the leadership of the Seventh Senate, including former Senate President David Mark; his deputy (now Saraki’s deputy), Ekweremadu; former Senate Leader, Victor Ndoma-Egba; and the former Chairman, Senate Committee on Rules and Business, Senator Ita Enang.

Maikasuwa, who is the custodian of the standing rules, was also invited for questioning by the police.

PoliticsOsun, One Of The Best States In Nigeria-aregbesola by ChelseaDr(op): 2:11am On Jul 27, 2015
Osun State Governor, Mr. Rauf Aregbesola, has said the state is one of the best places to be in Nigeria despite the gloomy picture of poverty being painted by to those outside.

Aregbesola, who said this in a statement made available to our correspondent in Osogbo on Sunday by his media aide, Mr. Semiu Okanlawon, added that the National Bureau of Statistics, in its report, ranked Osun State the highest in development index in 2012.

The governor was quoted to have said this at the 42nd Annual General Meeting of the Association of Advertising Agencies of Nigeria, which was held in Osogbo.

He added that the same agency ranked the state next to Niger State in terms of poverty reduction.

Speaking on the situation of things in the state, the governor said he was sure the participants at the AAAN meeting saw that the picture being allegedly painted by the opposition party in the state was wrong.

He said, “As horrifying as the pictures our opposition have been painting to you, I am sure that with your physical presence, you would have noticed that all what they are saying do not reflect in the faces of the accommodating people you see around.

“You would have also noticed that Osun is one of the best places to be in Nigeria. According to the National Bureau of Statistics, an agent of the Federal Government, Osun is the state with the highest development index in Nigeria in 2012.

“The Bureau equally said we are next to Niger State in poverty reduction index and we would have been above Niger State because the large chunk of Niger’s rating was influenced because of their boundary with Abuja and others.”

The governor said those criticising him for embarking on the construction of an airport at Ido-Osun were ill-informed, saying the project which was started by his predecessor was capable of transforming the economy of the state.

He said, “It will not take time to develop the airport to aircraft maintenance hub in Africa. We only have just three aircraft maintenance hangers in the whole of Africa. We need not go to Europe or America to get the aircraft in Africa maintained.

“All we need to attract that business is to develop the facility that we have in Ido-Osun. We have signed an agreement with two hanger operation firms, knowing that aircraft maintenance business is a money spinning investment.”

HealthWorld Hepatitis Day-Prevent Hepatitis:Act Now! by ChelseaDr(op):
The World Health Organization has July 28 every year as World Hepatitis day. It is yet another day to bring our attention to this deadly infection. The Theme for this year (2015) is: Prevent Hepatitis: Act Now. . If I may ask, do you know your Hepatitis B status? This is time to ACT...Go for screening TODAY!

WHO, on this day highlights the urgent need for countries to enhance action to prevent viral hepatitis infection and to ensure that people who have been infected are diagnosed and offered treatment. This year, the Organization is focusing particularly on hepatitis B and C, which together cause approximately 80% of all liver cancer deaths and kill close to 1.4 million people every year.

Know the risks

WHO is alerting people to the risks of contracting hepatitis from unsafe blood, unsafe injections, and sharing drug-injection equipment. Some 11 million people who inject drugs have hepatitis B or C infection. Children born to mothers with hepatitis B or C and sex partners of people with hepatitis are also at risk of becoming infected.

The Organization emphasizes the need for all health services to reduce risks by using only sterile equipment for injections and other medical procedures, to test all donated blood and blood components for hepatitis B and C (as well as HIV and syphilis) and to promote the use of the hepatitis B vaccine. Safer sex practices, including minimizing the number of partners and using barrier protective measures (condoms), also protect against transmission.

Demand safe injections

Approximately, two million people a year contract hepatitis from unsafe injections. These infections can be averted through the use of sterile syringes that are specifically designed to prevent reuse.

Eliminating unnecessary injections is also an effective strategy to protect against hepatitis transmission. There are 16 billion injections administered every year. Around 5% of these injections are for immunization, a further 5% for procedures like blood transfusions and injectable contraceptives, and the remaining 90% to administer medicines. For many diseases, injections are not the first recommended course of treatment and oral medications could be used.

Be vaccinated

WHO recommends vaccinating all children against hepatitis B infection, from which approximately 780 000 people die each year. A safe and effective vaccine can protect from hepatitis B infection for life. Ideally, the vaccine should be given as soon as possible after birth, preferably within 24 hours. The birth dose should be followed by 2 or 3 doses to complete the vaccine series.

WHO also recommends vaccinating adults who are at increased risk of acquiring hepatitis B. These include people who frequently require blood or blood products (for example dialysis patients), health-care workers, people who inject drugs, household and sexual contacts of people with chronic hepatitis B, and people with multiple sexual partners.

Since 1982, over 1 billion doses of hepatitis B vaccine have been used worldwide and millions of future deaths from liver cancer and cirrhosis have been prevented. In a number of countries where around 1 in 10 children used to become chronically infected with the hepatitis B virus, vaccination has reduced the rate of chronic infection to less than 1 in 100 among immunized children. To date, there is no available vaccine against hepatitis C.

Get tested, seek treatment

Medicines are now available that can cure most people with hepatitis C and control hepatitis B infection. People who receive these medicines are much less likely to die from liver cancer and cirrhosis and much less likely to transmit the virus to others. WHO therefore urges people who think they might have been exposed to hepatitis to get tested so they can find out whether they need treatment to improve their own health and reduce the risk of transmission.

Earlier this year, WHO issued new guidelines for treatment of hepatitis B infection. These recommend using simple non-invasive tests to assess the stage of liver disease to help identify who needs treatment. WHO also calls for prioritizing treatment for those with cirrhosis - the most advanced stage of liver disease and for the use of two safe and highly effective medicines, tenofovir or entecavir. Continued monitoring using simple tests is important to assess whether treatment is working, and if it can be stopped.

In 2014, WHO issued guidance for testing and treatment of hepatitis C infection. WHO recommends providing testing for people considered at high risk of infection and ensuring treatment for those who have the virus with several effective medicines, including new regimens that use only oral medicines. WHO will update recommendations on drug treatments periodically as new antiviral medicines become available and as new evidence emerges.

Sheggy13:
That's the point being made by the aggrieved senators and the police. It was the job of the 7th senate to amend the standing order 2011 to be used to inaugurate the 8th senate, after proper extensive discussion and 2/3rd of the senators agreeing to such amendments. But since there was no such amendments, it then means the new one called 2015 were forged by certain group of persons mostly notably the clerk, David Mark and Ekweremadu for their selfish aims. They never saw the need to amend it then cos it favoured them the PDP being the majority in the house and they felt they'd still retain the majority position during this year's elections which took them by surprise. How a few persons amend the Senate standing order for a house of 108 members without their knowledge. That's impunity of the highest order. The fools supporting these moves in this thread are doing it cos their brother emerged deputy SP by such arrangements, and they would be able to chairman many committees even as opposition.
Thank you for this enlightenment. l still have some questions. Does it mean that it is mandatory to amend the senate standing rules to produce that for the succeeding year? Since there was no such 2/3 amendment of the 7th senate standing rule, does it mean there is now no senate standing rule 2015? Meaning that what was allegedly forged was Senate standing rule 2011 since there is no 2015 standing rule? Because one can only forge what had been in existence not something that has never existed. Pardon my ignorance please, l'm just a lay man trying to understand the scenerio.
