Who gives anyone in respiratory distress anything by mouth?
Nawaoh
He had made significant improvement while waiting for the covid-19 result, and while attending health workers were busy with other patients, he requested for water and the "ignorant" relative innocently gave him the water and by the time the attending Doctor knew what was happening, it was too late.

He wasn't given water while in respiratory distress, he had made some improvement then after initial resuscitation and treatment.

You don't know what our people can do, that is why I used the word innocent ignorance, people give not just water to unconscious patients but also food, when you're attending to another patient. We have seen a lot of that. They do it innocently not knowing the amount of harm they are actually causing.

The probable primary cause of death was aspiration (chemical pneumonitis) as he requested for water and suddenly coughed while drinking the water and subsequently slumped and died.

The secondary cause of death may then be covid-19.

HealthRe: What exactly I'm I been treated for? by ChelseaDr(m): 8:04am On May 31, 2020
Lajiniran:
Good morning, I humbly seek the input of professionals i.e Doctors and Nurses in the house.

I am in my early 30s, married and I have 3 kids. For some months now, I noticed I have been having abdominal pain, left side to be precise. There was a time I went to a Catholic hospital to complain about the tiny pinching pain that goes and comes back.

I was given some antibiotics, the pain left but still came back. I changed my hospital to another one, so on Friday I decided to complain to another doc at my new hospital and he pressed my stomach, I didn't feel any pain but when he hit my lower back gently with a fist, I had little pain. I was asked to do a urine test, and the doctor examined the result and said it was fine and okay. He said he will have to treat me for bile load nephritis or something. I asked if it's something serious or I should be worried, he said no.

He then requested I do a total abdominal scan to do a thorough examination, which will be done soon. Then placed me on flaggyl, gentamicin injection 3 per day for 3 days, vitc 1000g, doxycycline tablet. I will finish the injection today. What really scared me was that he asked, are you married, I said yes. Then he said your wife will have to be treated too.

I want to tell you that the pain has reduced even before finishing the dugs and injections, but I am really worried, WHAT I'M I BEEN TREATED FOR?
The doctor actually informed the Op about his condition but apparently there was no communication.

The doctor told the Op he was treating him for pyelonephritis but the Op interpreted it as bile load nephritis and he (the Op) did not border to ask what the hell that meant and the doctor also forgot he was taking to a layman and not a colleague of his.

Communication is the key, its importance cannot be over emphasized.

To the Op also, there is no infection you contracted from your wife neither will you give it to her, no.

Pyelonephritis is a type of bacterial infection that affects where urine is formed and the passage way of urine to the bladder. That is why the doctor asked you to do urine test (which I presume is urine culture).

So with antibiotics you will get better and your wife does not necessarily need to be treated except if there is any other reason we don't know yet.

What I do not understand however, is the rationale for including gentamycin in your treatment.

HealthRe: We Will Continue Hydroxychloroquine Clinical Trials - NAFDAC by ChelseaDr(m): 12:04am On May 30, 2020
I think Nigeria is right by continuing the study.

This is because experts have raised a lot of questions from the study upon which WHO based its decision to suspend the inclusion of hydroxychloroquine from the solidarity trial.

They have questioned the hastiness in which the study was published. Article was accepted and peer-reviewed and published within 4 weeks.. Which is too short a time to do all those.

They also questioned the methodology, as they did not disclose the hospitals and countries that participated in the study and the fact that the results they claimed came from Australia contradicted what was declared.

So I think we should continue with our own study.

HealthRe: Covid-19: Loss Of Sense Of Smell: A Possible Prognostic Marker Of Mild Disease? by ChelseaDr(op): 11:23pm On May 29, 2020
Jakumo:
This is an intriguing hypothesis Doc. I too perused all 18 pages of the discussion thread devoted to the subject of losing the senses of smell and taste, yet, could not find more that a couple of instances in which the disease was reported to have dramatically intensified, following that loss of smell and taste.

There were certainly a few vivid accounts of overpowering body pain, that appeared regularly among those 18 pages of responses, yet, from what I can discern thus far, all those who responded to that discussion thread remain in comparatively stable health, despite a few reporting lingering symptoms that include the loss of appetite associated with the loss of both taste and smell sensations.

Your suggestion that the loss of smell and taste could be indicative of infection by a comparatively benign mutation of the Corona virus, would certainly be great news to all those who are still living with those symptoms, and might be worried about a relapse. On the other side of the coin, however, one cannot help but wonder whether the preponderance of light symptoms being reported in this forum merely conceals the fact that equal or greater numbers of infected people who experienced similar initial symptoms, are now simply too weak to type a response on their phone, or that those phones have indeed taken away entirely, once the condition of deteriorating covid 19 patients renders them mute.

One thing is for sure. These mysteries will be solved by the medical establishment. How soon that breakthrough occurs, remains an open question.
A million thanks Jakumo.
You are very correct, the mystery will definitely be unraveled one day while hoping that our policy makers would start thinking outside the box.

Lorazepam:
Possible
But this would require further studies and research.

I even wish a random sample of the population in maybe Lagos could be picked and tested , to have an idea of the incidence of covid in the population.
This was done in Afghanistan where about 500 random apparently healthy people in the capital city of Kabul were selected and tested for Coronavirus and about 150 of them actually tested positive, that's 30% prevalence rate !!

And as of the time that study was carried out, which was earlier this month, the official statistics were that Afghanistan had carried out 12000 tests nationwide and about 2700 had tested positive.

Just goes to show how far and wide the disease had spread, and that their official numbers were a poor reflection of the actual situation on ground.

That's probably the same thing happening in Nigeria. Just my opinion though.
Very correct

Kobojunkie:
@OP, how many of those who reported having these symptoms also reported having any of the pre-existing conditions that are said to put people at higher risk for severe illness?
Majority so far presented with these symptoms only.

If you have gone through nairaland health section, you will also notice that most of those people complained of loss of sense of smell and taste only.

However, I have not carried out any studies to validated this claim, it is just based on my personal observations.

I wish we come together and unravel this mystery. There is an obvious gap in knowledge and we need to fill it.
HealthCovid-19: Loss Of Sense Of Smell: A Possible Prognostic Marker Of Mild Disease? by ChelseaDr(op): 10:42pm On May 28, 2020
It is no longer news that loss of sense of smell and taste are recognized symptoms of Covid-19.

It is no longer news also that even the world health organization (WHO) has wondered why Africans are not recording the kind of mortalities from Covid-19 as being recorded in the Western and other developed countries.

Even those that predicted a lot of body bags in the streets of Africa have been disappointed to say the least.

There has been a rise of people complaining of loss of sense of smell and taste and there has been a plethora of such complaints here on nairaland.

From my interactions with patients (over the phone), the complaints keep coming and of all these complaints, we have noticed a spontaneous recovery from virtually all of them.

Could it be that those individuals were actually infected with the Covid-19 virus and recovered without hospitalization or treatment, since our testing capacity in Nigeria is still low.

I have also not really heard (from the media and my interactions with colleagues) that those who were admitted into the hospital or those that died of Covid-19 complained of loss of sense of smell or taste.

If the above assertion is correct, it means then that people presenting with loss of sense of smell and taste are likely going to have a milder form of the disease without being admitted to the hospital, while those who tested positive to covid-19 with normal sense off smell and taste stands the chance of likely hospital admission and treatment.

The government and Federal Ministry of health should focus on these symptoms especially for those who tested positive and advise them to self-isolate at home and reserve the hospital beds for others who may really need them. This will also reduce cost for the government and allay anxiety on the part of the patients.

Could it be that following infection, the virus harbours within the nasal epithelium, transmit signals to the olfactory lobe and secondarily helps the body to develop a widespread immunity against the virus?

Could this be why the case fatality is low in Africa? Time shall tell.

I am just thinking aloud!!!

It appears loss of sense of smell and taste is a very good prognostic marker for survival and a marker of mild disease.

That guy was great....

At a point Frank asked for the correct pronunciation of his name he said "Arō-ömâ" meaning "a good year"

It was indeed a good year for him.

He used ALL his life lines starting from the 5 million question which was the location of Gelaras volcano. He sought the audience's assistance who said Colombia, he requested to use 50-50 life line and Lebanon and Colombia were the remaining options... He went straight for Colombia...

The 10 milla question was the reason for awarding Professor Mathaal Wangari a Nobel Price... He used the last life line to call his cousin Luthana who went straight for PEACE... He followed his answer without thinking about it and lo and behold, that was the climax!!

His confidence was out of this planet.

HealthRe: After 11 Days, Coronavirus Patients Stop Being Infectious — STUDY by ChelseaDr(m): 12:17am On May 26, 2020
That is a great breakthrough in research and will guide development of protocols for patient discharge from treatment centers. However, one should note the following:

1. The study was carried out on those that already had symptoms which is consistent with the two weeks prescribed for isolation after which one is declared free if no symptoms present. This is because symptoms usually develop around day 5 of contracting the infection.

2. The study was carried out among only 73 participants which is very small and not representative of the general population.

3. The study was carried out in Singapore and needed to be replicated in other countries and races.

4. The study to me did not really add a new knowledge to what we already know about the "two weeks magic", it just buttressed that fact.

5. We can also extrapolate this to asymptomatic individuals because after two weeks, though they may still test positive, the positivity may not be due to a live virus but may be as a result of a broken down particle of the virus.

6. I give kudos to the researchers while all hands must be on deck to develop a vaccine against Covid-19.

HealthRe: I Lost A Neighbor To Tyhoid by ChelseaDr(m): 10:18am On May 25, 2020
Unfortunately that is the reality on ground. Most of thevhospitals are used as isolation centers and those that are open don't have PPEs, who do we blame?

Every sick person presenting to any hospital must be treated as Covid-19 patient until it is ruled out, but unfortunately our government is not testing enough

The Giant of Africa has not tested up to 50,000 cases since the past 3 months, South Africa and Ghana should become the new African Giants, because if you know how many tests they have done and how serious they are about it, then you will realize that Nigeria is a sleeping giant.
