Carryovers are when a student fails a course and is expected to study it again and rewrite the course. It is important to note that carryovers are not always the fault of the Students. In the higher institution, not less than 60% of all students have had one or more carryovers. Even some first class graduates at one time or the other have had one carryover or the other but it never killed their hopes and expectations. The two best graduating students in my department and in my set were both first class students and both of them had carryovers in our first year and yet they still buckled up and came back to their feet and succeeded in the end. Failure is not the end of the road but rather, we fail when we quit and refuse to try harder. Knowing that we could at one time or the other have carryovers, the question is “how do we cope with carryovers?” I had three carryovers in the university. Therefore, the recommendations and suggestions I will outline are practical recommendations which I applied and for sure, they worked for me. Humility Humility is indeed a great gain. When some students have carryovers, you will never see them attend lectures. They feel that since they have passed the level, they cannot stoop as low as attending the lecture with lower level students. But if actually you have passed the level, then why fail the course? If you think you cannot attend lecture with the lower level, then make sure you don’t fail any course that will warrant your attending lectures with lower level. In the three carryovers I had, I was regular with the lectures except in situations beyond my control. To my greatest amazement, in one of the courses I failed, as I went to rewrite the examination, I discovered that many of my level mates also had carryovers in the course yet none of them ever attended the lecture. Even when we wrote the test, many of them missed it because they were not informed and I could not inform them too because I never knew they also had carryovers in the same course. I attended lectures but saw none of them. If all of us who had carryover in the course had identified with each other, we could have created a network and in turn work as a team in doing assignments, in reading together, in attending lectures and as much as possible, identified with the lecturer. By so doing, we would have been more prepared for the examination than we were. When the exam timetable for the semester was released, we found out that that course clashed with another of our final year course. Many of the students rewriting the course saw it and yet did nothing about it. It was myself and one other student who worked together with the course representative to make sure that the timetable was amended so that one course could be shifted for the other. So, humble yourself and identify with the necessary people. Add More Efforts We worked hard and yet we failed. This shows that our preparation was insufficient. If we had prepared enough, we would not have failed the course. Therefore, failing a course means that we should work harder. We might have heard a lot of success stories of different men and women in different spheres of influence. But most times, we hear of their success without hearing of their failures. But be sure that these men and women at one time or the other failed. In fact, they failed so many times. Now imagine how it would have been if at the time of failure they quit. We would not have known them or heard about them as we have today. Work hard, but when your hard work does not lift you to the level you want to be, then work harder. Always live each day with the consciousness that practice makes perfect. It becomes part of you when you keep doing it over and over. Add more efforts to the one you have added already. Develop a well guided and easy to-follow-reading timetable and make sure you pay serious attention to that course. If you did not attend lectures the previous year, please attend them now so that your back will not be put to the ground the second time. Be Disciplined We all love pleasure, we all love comfort, but on the road to success, there should be room for opportunity cost or alternative foregone. It will not cost us much if we deny ourselves certain pleasure for a short period of time in a bid to achieve something. Even if it cost us anything lets be willing to make the sacrifice. Be disciplined enough to mark out time for your various activities each day. Where there is a well-structured action plan, discipline will help us achieve all of our goals. To discipline yourself does not mean you will spend 24 hours daily in studying your books, but rather, it means letting go of all unnecessary things. There are a lot of things that take our time but the question is “do we actually need to spend time with some of these things?” Any activity that might not add value to your life is not worth it, therefore do not pay attention to them. Anything that is not building you up is breaking you down. In a bid to discipline yourself, it does not mean you will quit your lifestyle and hobby forever, but rather you only quit certain things for a period of time. Now that you have on or more carryovers, sit up. Be Determined Determination leads to discipline which in turn enables us to achieve our goals. When we are determined to achieve anything, there is hardly any other thing that can take us from our path. In all my period of research and studies, I discovered that there is nothing that can stop any man or woman except self. A determined man is an unstoppable man. A determined student is that student that is determined and the only thing that can stop him is when the success is achieved. President Donald Trump said, “The more people tell you it’s not possible, that it can’t be done, the more you should be absolutely determined to prove them wrong. Treat the word impossible as nothing more than motivation”. As for the ocean, it can be crossed. As for the red sea, it can be divided, as for the mountain, it can be surmounted. It will only take determination to do it. Determination is a very important and indispensable virtue that must be possessed by every and any success minded fellow. The only thing is that it might take us some little time, but as for achievement, our goals and objectives must be achieved. https://infoducation.com.ng/coping-with-carryovers-in-higher-institution/ |
Carryover is when a student fails a course and is expected to study it again and rewrite the course.Carryover is never the end of the road. In fact, it are not even close to the end of the road. In the process of our studies, we might have one or more carryover to rewrite. But it is very important to know that carryover does not mean the end of the road. Just as passing an examination does not mean that the student is intelligent. Carryover is caused by series of things of which the few involved are; Missing scripts You write an examination and all of a sudden, it turns out that you do not have a result because your script could not be traced. This reason for failure is not the students fault because it might be that the student studied, prepared and wrote well but unfortunately, he never made it. People might formulate a lot of reasons why the script could not be traced but the truth remains that as far as computer based examination and test are not fully implemented and deployed, this problem will continue to occur and reoccur. Even with computer based system, it is still possible that after and examination, the system or server could crash (although it’s very rare). Therefore, if you are trapped in this kind of situation buckle up and prepare for the course the subsequent year. Problem with the Lecturer Having a problem with your lecturer is never advisable because when the lecturer looks for ways to punish you and finds none, he or she might decide to fail you for no just reason. Therefore, strive as much as possible to avoid every and any form of misunderstanding with your lecturer. Education is not just for academic enlightenment but also for moral and behavioral development, so as much as it lies within you, be well behaved. Examination malpractice This is a serious worm or virus which has eaten up Nigerian educational system. When caught in the act, there is a very high possibility that the punishment for the offense might lead to failing that particular course in which you were caught. Abstain from examination malpractice, shun impersonation, read your books, study hard and then there will be nothing to be afraid of. Lack of proper preparation When you are not prepared for a course or an examination, there is no two ways about it, “you will fail” (just that examination malpractice has polluted the system). As it has been said before now that “he who fails to plan, plans to fail” it also implies that he who fails to prepare, prepares to fail. You are so busy with a lot of things or have become just too lazy that you no longer have time for your books and studies, how then do you intend to pass. Whenever you discover that you no longer study your books the way you are supposed to, wake up or else you start counting your carryover even before the examination starts. Missing Practical This could also make one fail a course. In the university I attended, practical was 20% while examination, test, assignment, attendance etc. made up the remaining 80% but if you get all the 80% and miss practical, it is sure fail. Therefore, as you strive to secure the 80 marks, also remember your practical courses. Although, this only have to do with those courses that have practical aspects. Your Firm Stand for Righteousness Many times, few of us take the risk of failing to make sure that we do not compromise our religious and righteous believes. In my undergraduate years, I had three carryovers, one was as a result of the fact that I had to drop the course and rewrote it later, while the other two were because I was not good in those courses and I vowed to myself not to get involved in any form of examination malpractice no matter how hard the course seems. The two courses I failed, I was sure of failing them even while I was still in the examination hall. I would have been so surprised if I passed the course. For me, I decided that failure will be more preferable to examination malpractice and to the last minute, I kept to it. I rewrote the two courses the next year and passed them with better grades. Missing an Examination Another reason why students fail in a course could be as a result of missing an examination, although it is very rare. Students miss examination for several reasons. Some dropped the course. Sickness is another reason why a student could miss an examination. So one of these or many more results in student missing an examination. Therefore with this, it is termed a carryover to be rewritten the next year though the course was never written at all. Not buying a Textbook There are some institutions where buying of textbooks are made compulsory and therefore, when you buy the textbook it has an added mark to it. On the other hand, some greedy lecturers on their own accord make their textbooks compulsory. So failure to buy the textbook will make some students loose some marks which might be just the exact mark that is needed to make them pass the course. Still, some lecturers will intentionally fail students who do not buy their textbooks not minding the reason for which they were not able to buy the book. So, it is important to know that as much as carryover is not a good thing, yet having a carryover or more does not make you a dullard. So if you are battling with one carryover or the other, read my next post on coping with Carryover https://infoducation.com.ng/coping-with-carryovers-in-higher-institution/ https://infoducation.com.ng/causes-of-carryover-in-higher-institutions/

The man who leads the largest Roman Catholic Church in America is advocating that the church allow married men to become priests, and plans to spend his retirement ministering among the poorest of the poor. Monsignor John McSweeney, 75, who is originally from New York, is concluding 43 years of ministry in Charlotte, North Carolina, The Twhere he has most recently served as priest at St. Matthew in The Reverend father who leads the largest Roman Catholic Church in America is advocating that the church allow married men to become priests, and plans to spend his retirement ministering among the poorest of the poor. Monsignor John McSweeney, 75, who is originally from New York, is concluding 43 years of ministry in Charlotte, North Carolina, where he has most recently served as priest at St. Matthew in Ballantyne, an affluent suburb of the state’s most populous city. St. Matthew Catholic Church is the largest Roman Catholic church (parish) in the United States which boasts of over 10,000 families, according to The Charlotte Observer Sunday. Much like Pope Francis, McSweeney said he desires a church that is more oriented toward hospitality and less about judgment. Charlotte, which reportedly has a burgeoning population of Roman Catholics, faces a shortage of priests in their diocese. And to address this, McSweeney said he favors the Church allowing priests to be married, mentioning that he has been around many Protestant pastors who are married and “doing great work.” “And many men I was in the (Catholic) seminary with would be great priests today except for one thing,” McSweeney said. That one thing is their desire to be married. For the first 1,000 years of Catholicism, celibacy for priests was optional. In March, Pope Francis expressed openness to the idea. “In our history, we would have men in training in different seminaries so we’d get a broader aspect of the church,” he said. “And I think that’s what should be done now. Not just one place.” In the fall of 2009, Pope Benedict invited disenchanted Anglicans to come into the Roman Catholic Church, and allowed for married Anglican priests who converted to remain in the clergy. McSweeney is “very concerned,” about a resurgence of younger priests who are very conservative who dislike the Vatican II reforms in the Catholic Church. Also called the Second Vatican Council, this council occurred in the 1960s where the Roman Church adopted notable changes in the way ministry is conducted. Vatican II invited lay people to minister more actively in the liturgy, and masses were increasingly celebrated in native languages of people, not just Latin. Yet lay ministers who are women, are not being allowed, for instance, to help serve Communion. Altar boys are permitted, but not altar girls. These young conservative priests, McSweeney explained, “are trying to reform the reform … I don’t endorse what they’re doing to God’s people.” “I’ve had the privilege of being in many different roles in ministry … But I think I need now to experience [poverty],” McSweeney said, who intends to spend the years of his retirement in a place like Haiti or Jamaica, ministering among some of the most destitute people on earth. “I’m going to try to walk in the sandals of the Lord,” McSweeney said. “I have a little motto: ‘You never say no to Jesus.’ And he keeps talking to me.” http://www.christianityupdate.com/blog/largest-roman-catholic-church/ |

True true, Nigeria is a shithole country |
The pastor stood up to teach in our midweek service. The first thing he asked the church to do was to go ask someone “How was your day?”. Everyone went around asking, shaking and patting each others back. Some even hugged themselves! I smiled as I saw it all. Guess what, no one came to the pastor to ask that simple question ‘How was your day?’. Yet! he was tired and it had been a really hard day for him. Pastors and Medical doctors may have something in common – people believe they are fine as long as they are breathing!. YOU are quick to ask your pastor “Are you praying for me?” But have you ever told him “I am praying for you”?. You know how to accuse the pastor of not visiting you but have you ever stopped by to check on him and his family? You tell the pastor that you are going on vacation but have you ever wondered when was the last time he had a break? He smiles at you telling you “It is well with you” when at times, it is a prophecy for himself. A pastor can officiate a wedding just after consoling a bereaved family (Can you imagine that emotional switch – yet he must be stable). Your pastor is human too! Trust me, there are days he did not feel like coming to church but he still did! Some of the lovely suit covers the pains. I have seen pastors quit because of depression (true!). Everyone knows how to fault a Pastor but not many know he has pains of his own Everyone know how to judge a Pastors action but not everyone want him to discipline them even if its part of his job!. Sometimes pastors put a smile on their faces and with strong courage, preach powerful sermons, pray for the needy then the entire congregation disperse leaving the pastor alone or probably with his wife yet he is undergoing through hell. He lacks someone he can share his woes but all run away. Do you surely enquire how his week was and what is troubling him, his family and ministry. Don’t desire to provide for the ministry and omit the minister. When you shop, remember your pastor. When you pray remember him. When you go for holiday, remember him and when visiting, do not forget to call at his house and God will take the grace upon his servant pastor and give it unto you. You can put a smile on your pastor!! Appreciate your Him. Buy gifts for him and his family too. Send words and messages of love and encouragement to him. SERIOUSLY, when last did you call your Pastor just to wish him well and ask how he is? Distance is not a barrier!!!!!. Don’t be tempted to fight him or fight what he’s doing you could be fighting against God Himself. Support him and pray for him and warn those who Opposes your pastor. Remember, he has the onerous job of watching over your spiritual well being. The happier and more stable he is, the better he will discharge his duties! Help your them to succeed! I have simply told you what some Pastors may never say!. Trust me! You can start by sharing this with others! GOD BLESS OUR PASTORS IN JESUS NAME |
It was my wedding night, I was so tired, I needed a bath and rest. We had danced so much my back was aching. Husband was beginning to have funny ideas. He was beaming like a new born baby. Well I won’t blame him, any man in his position would not joke with this night. Because, I was a warrior during our courtship ” No… No hugging, No pecking, No holding”. Sexual purity till my marriage was top on my list. This is something I can't stop doing . The Knock came, I was thinking, half past 11pm, is that room service? I thought, then with eyes popping, I heard my mother in law’s iron like voice, ” Tise, Micheal open up” Micheal jumped up and rushed to the door, opened up for his mum. Mum in law walked in, sat down majestically and asked us to sit. “Tise, I don’t know if anyone told you, there is a curse on my husband’s family line. The men in their family don’t prosper, the wives are the ones who work, and provide for the family. This is because, according to history, one of their forefathers killed the only son of a great herbalist. The herbalist then placed a curse on every son in that lineage that their hands will never produce forth good, also they must always lose a son amongst their children”. I watched in amazement as my mum in law kept talking history. She then concluded by saying ” In Essense, I just came to let you know that your marriage is not a land of Fun, but war”. Why? Why didn’t she tell me this before now.? Well, not to waste her time I also gave her my history. “Mum, I am sorry, I also did not tell you this. I come from a family that fights for those we love. My Father actually died while trying to save his people. My family line does not operate under curses, because we are operating under a covenant of blessings. Therefore, anyone who is fortunate to marry us, becomes automatically fortunate. So mum, For my sake, Your son can not operate under that curse again” Mum in law, was shocked to say the least, as I could tell what she was thinking. It then made sense, my Sis in laws always had this gloomy look, and two of them actually lost their sons. “Mum, you need to go and rest, my husband and I need to produce Two sons this night. Because In my family line, we conceive immediately our husbands meet us”. My mum in law, stood up with caution and silently walked out. That moment all the tiredness vanished, as I took Michael’s hand and looked him straight in the eye. “Listen, I don’t care what you or your Ancestors have done, but for my sake, you will prosper with this hand. Listen, Paul and some criminals were on a ship and there was a shipwreck. The soldiers wanted to kill all criminals, to avoid them escaping, but the Army officer stopped them for the sake of saving Paul. Micheal, For Paul’s sake, the lives of other criminals were preserved. So sweetheart, because you are married to me, because we are in the same ship, yes this relationship called marriage, For my sake, you can’t be punished for your ancestors sin.” That became my prayer plea to God from that day forward, I kept praying to God to save my husband, my Sons For my sake. To the Glory of God, I have Four Sons, None of them died, Now, they have sons and daughters of their own. For my Sake, my husband’s destiny changed for the best. Dear reader, it is time to pray to God to save your family and those around you because you are in their lives. However, before God can honour that request, Make sure you are a Friend of God. Paul was not an ordinary person or a sinner, He was a friend of God. Pray: Lord, For my sake save my loved ones, and those around me. Make me an asset in the lives of those around me in Jesus name. Make my presence In people’s live preserve ME and them in Jesus name. http://www.christianityupdate.com/blog/for-my-sake-2/ |

It has become quite common for Christians to take the line that our business is to talk about Jesus and not about sex and sexual morality. Our obsession with sex is creating a barrier to gospel presentation. I have to say I am pretty sympathetic to this argument. I never imagined when I began preaching the word of God that our sexual lives would play a big part in the presentation, nor that we would be engulfed in a crisis over the integrity of churches on this issue. Well, should we stop talking about it and get on with talking about Jesus? The trouble is, that if we take that line, it will not be the real gospel of Jesus we will be preaching. It’s interesting isn’t it that the most extended and coherent presentation of the gospel in the New Testament, the Epistle to the Romans, starts with sex, linking sexual sin with the suppression of the knowledge of God and hence idolatry. To say that we need to stop talking about sex and start talking about Jesus makes two big errors. First, it undervalues the power of sexual transgression to damage us as human beings and to damage our relationship with God. Our sexual instincts are so powerful and so central to our lives that they are integral to our personal identity. When we misuse our body by abandoning God’s instructions, it helps corrupt our self-understanding. It is actually cruel. Furthermore, when we turn away from the living God, we replace him by the worship of idols. Again, this worship is often expressed and accompanied by sexual licence. Indeed we are living at a time when sexual permissiveness is the norm and there is no fear of God. Second, it means that we cannot adequately summons people to repentance. Without the call to repentance there is no gospel. The great sin from which we need to repent is pride – lives directed by ourselves. But this great sin exhibits itself in idolatry, and idolatry often expresses itself in sexual sin as well as the horrors of greed and injustice and lack of love. That is why I say that there is a danger that we will be preaching a false Jesus. If the Jesus we preach does not transform human lives and does not free us from bondage to immoral sex and greed, he is not the true Jesus. It would be so comfortable never to mention and label sexual sin in our presentation of the gospel. And it would be so wrong. http://www.christianityupdate.com/blog/how-important-is-sex/

When Billy Graham died at age 99 in his North Carolina home on February 21, he left behind a legacy of service to his Lord through preaching the Gospel. But according to his will, recently made public, that’s not all there is to his legacy. Graham left some parting words and assets to his family — and some financial backing for his ministry, the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association (BGEA). The 16-page document begins with a charge to his family members who remain. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y8FWsuP-IlQ “I ask my children and grandchildren to maintain and defend at all hazards and at any cost of personal sacrifice the blessed doctrine of complete atonement through the blood of the Lord Jesus Christ once offered, and through that alone,” he wrote. “I urge all of you to walk with the Lord in a life of separation from the world and to keep eternal values in view.” As a comfort to his family, he wrote: “When you read this I will be safely with Jesus in Paradise. I will be awaiting the reunion of our family in Heaven.” Throughout the next section of the will, Graham chronicled the major points of his life – non-material blessings, such as his simple childhood on a Charlotte, N.C., dairy farm, marriage to Ruth Bell Graham, and love for their five children. “From the beginning of our marriage, we determined that we would be tithers,” wrote Graham of his and Ruth’s financial commitment to God’s kingdom. “We determined not to be preoccupied with material things, which leads to covetousness and which the Scriptures call idolatry.” In keeping with his commitment on earth, Graham willed 10 percent of his residuary estate – that which is left after debts, funeral expenses, death taxes, and all other claims are satisfied – to BGEA “to be used for the purposes of the Billy Graham Library Endowment.” After the posthumous BGEA contribution, all remaining assets will be distributed equally among his five children: Virginia (“Gigi”) Graham, Anne Graham Lotz, Ruth (“Bunny”) Graham, Franklin Graham and Nelson (“Ned”) Graham. Another beneficiary included in Graham’s will is his literary trust, which will hold the copyrights to his works. But Graham left more than just parting words and material assets to his family and his ministry. He left behind one last charge – one last “invitation” – to anyone who has access to this public will. “I urge all who shall read this document to read and study the Scriptures daily and to trust only in the Lord Jesus Christ for salvation,” he wrote. http://www.christianityupdate.com/blog/billy-graham-last-will-and-testament-revealed/ |
Televangelist Jesse Duplantis is seeking for donations in order to raise a sum of $54M which is intended to for the acquisition of a brand new Falcon 7X private jet. He made this request just few months after Kenneth Copeland acquired a new multimillion dollar Gulfstream V jet. In the video he released, he said he was believing God for it. In his words, he said, “You know I’ve owned three different jets in my life and used them and just burning them up for the Lord. Now some people believe that preachers shouldn’t have jets. I really believe that preachers ought to go on every available voice, every available outlet, to get this gospel preached to the world,” he adds. Jesse Duplantis says he wants this new jet so that he can go to places non-stop, which he cannot do with the plane he currently owns. He adds that God has asked him to believe Him for a Falcon 7X, and not to pay for it. “Jesse, I didn’t ask you to pay for it. I asked you to believe for it,” he claims God told him. “I really believe that if Jesus was physically on the earth today he wouldn’t be riding a donkey. Think about that for a minute. He’d be in an airplane preaching the gospel all over the world,” he adds. http://www.christianityupdate.com/blog/televangelist-jesse-duplantis-seeks-donations-54m-private-jet/ |
