Education / How To Utilize ASUU Strike Effectively by chikachuks1(m): 3:38am On Nov 06, 2018
With the current news in circulation, it has been said that Association of Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) are threatening to embark on indefinite strike until their desire and request is met by the Federal Government. It is important to know that strike is one of the worst experience any student should not pray to encounter.

A popular adage goes thus, “When two elephants fight, the ground suffers”. When the Federal Government and ASUU have misunderstanding, students suffers.

Be it as it may, ASUU strike is not something anyone should crave for. Do not wish to have a feel of it because it leaves scars on your academic life.

In this article, I want to encourage and motivate students on how to make the most and best out of any ASUU strike at all. Before then, let me state some adverse effect strike will have on every student.

1) Loss of time: Every ASUU strike that visits you leaves you with a serious loss of time. Remember that time wasted can never be regained.

2) Knowledge will decrease: When strike comes, knowledge will decrease because there will be no more lectures. No more assignments and tests. In turn, no more reason to study.

3) The duration of your studies will be lengthened: If the duration of your stay in school is 4 years, ASUU strike has the ability to lengthen it to 5 years. My primary 6 teacher spent more than 7 years studying a 4 years course in a university because of strike. Imagine when a student becomes a full time teacher. Many of us even doubted if he was really a student or not.

4) Anxiety: You will be so anxious on a daily basis. The question that will keep occurring and reoccurring in your mind is “When will this strike be over”? If you live far from your school, you will be afraid of traveling because your mind set will be like, “what if I travel today and they call of the strike next week”. You will just decide to stay more. And time will continue spilling over.

5) Boringness: Everything will become boring. There will be no more joy at all. You will be tired of seeing movies. You will be tired of visiting friends. You will be tired of staying at home. In fact, you will be tired of everything. Everything will be boring to you.

6) Everything will be hurried up when the strike is called up: Once school resumes, expect every activity to run with a speed of light. Most especially, in a situation where the strike lasts for long. Once it is called up, expect examination – whether you were taught or not. Few weeks will be brought out for revision and then examination follows.

7) You will lose contacts: You will lose many contact, though for a short term. You will miss a lot of friends and lecturers

cool No more enthusiasm: You will lack enthusiasm for any meaningful thing. No enthusiasm to read again. No enthusiasm to research. Every time will be given to social media and you might even get tired of it.
Knowing these, yet in every disadvantage, there more be an advantage.

You can use strike period judiciously for your own good. Here are few thing I recommend that you do.

1) Increase your productivity: You must seek to increase your productivity. Remember that from the knowledge of agriculture, bush fallowing increases the nutrient of the soil, which in turn enhances it productivity. How productive have you been in the past? How productive are you currently? Use this strike period to improve on it for your own good and betterment.

2) Increase your knowledge: You must increase your knowledge in this period. No matter how little the increase might be.

3) Increase you employability: I wrote an article with the title, “Why Nigerian graduates are unemployable”. Read the article carefully and see the reasons I stated there. Then, you can use this ASUU strike period to increase your employability. Enhance your skill within this period. Some of my course mates used the strike period to learn some Information Technology skills like website designing, programming, networking etc. Use this time to learn something that will aid you later.

4) Do not be idle: The climax of it all is this, “Do not be lazy”. Eschew laziness at all cost. Get your self involved into something meaningful and profitable

See strike period as a time to help yourself. Probably, because of your busy schedule during your normal school period, you might not be able to do some important things. This strike period is a period to do those things which you could not do during the semester. Let this strike better your life and not barter you.

Education / How AJAH EXCEL Caused A Revolution In Campus Entrepreneurship by chikachuks1(m): 10:54pm On Nov 03, 2018
Campus entrepreneurship has witness a great leap with the effort of people like Ajah Excel and others.

For few years, the campus has witnessed large number of student entrepreneurs, courtesy of some young fellows who despised all odds and caused a revolution. Prior to this time, students have the mentality that campus is only for your books and study and then nothing more. But few young chaps has broken the jinx to prove the system entirely wrong. Ajah Excel is one of them.

Campus Entrepreneurship has witnessed a high leap for few years now, seeing the fire that has been sparked. From Infoducation’s rating, Ajah Excel is the greatest entrepreneur that has ever risen in any south eastern higher institution in the past decade. This conclusion was drawn from the following consideration (parameters).

1) Nature of business
2) Campus Environment
3) Number of people who benefited from your service
4) Your influence
5) Achievements while in school
6) Your financial strength etc.

Ajah Excel, born on 25th October 1989 is a native of Ivo local Government Area of Ebonyi state but resides in Owerri Imo state. He has proven that the young ones can also be successful and even involved in the societal affair. Federal university of Technology Owerri in imo state Nigeria is one of the institutions with the highest number of students involved in campus entrepreneurship.

This is because Mr. Ajah Excel proved to all that it is possible to be a successful student business man. He graduated with a second class upper division from the department of Information Management Technology in the year 2016. He was a committed member of Christ Ambassador Student Outreach (CASOR). At the point of graduation he was the owner of a multi-million Naira business empire.

While in FUTO, he founded an association known as Campus CEOs. This organization had in membership, all the students who were involved in campus entrepreneurship and in turn owned a business. With this group, the number of CEOs grew rapidly because everyone wanted to be a part of the campus entrepreneurship cycle.

Ajah Excel is the owner and founder of the following business concerns.

1) Excel’s place: Excel’s place is one of the most patronized business centres in FUTO. Here, he helps students with lots of jobs like typing, scanning, printing, scholarship applications and many more services.

2) World Scholarship Forum: World scholarship forum is one of the biggest scholarship portals on the internet with thousands of visitors daily. Formally known as nigerianuniversityschorlaship.com, this website has helped lots of students at all levels of learning to acquire both local and international scholarships. For more details, visit the website on www.worldscholarshipforum.com

3) Find A Scholarship: His business acumen is matchless that he has 2 websites doing almost the same thing. One of the secret of successful business men and companies is that they run two or more company doing the same thing. An example is Toyota which owns lexus, facebook which owns whatsapp and instagram, Techno which owns infinix and much more. For more information, visit www.findascholarship.com

4) Job Finder Africa: This is one of the largest job portals in Africa. Visit the site for available job opportunities with any African country. For more information, visit http://jobfinderafrica.com/

5) Discuss Nigerian Group: In addition to all his businesses, Ajah Excel boasts of owning on of the biggest forums for Nigerians. For more information, visit www.discuss.ng

Though it is very impossible to ascertain his net-worth, yet we can have an insight through the valuation of his websites.

According to worthofweb, worldscholarshipforum is worth $73,000 with a monthly revenue of $6,000, findascholarship is worth $20,000 with a monthly revenue of $2,000, jobfinderafrica is worth $1,500 with a monthly revenue of $117, discuss.ng is worth $13,500 with a monthly revenue of $1,000

Excel, who is married to his heartthrob, Mrs. Amarachi Ajah Excel (also a blogger) is a proud husband and father. In 2016, for world youth leadership as the only representative from Nigeria. Fortunately, he is one of those guys with a very humble beginning as he has proven to us all that we are without excuse.

The life, story and effort of Mr. Ajah Excel Anayo has sparked up the fire of campus entrepreneurship in the Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO) and many other institutions. As a result of his efforts, FUTO currently have an entrepreneurial population of not less than 30% of the whole students.

Excel, the top-notch motivational speaker invests much resources yearly in helping other students start up their business successfully. He has mentored and coached lots of people to success.

Campus entrepreneurship has become sweeter and highly competitive in FUTO. Any student who newly gains admission also pays rapt attention in seeking business and investment opportunities in the campus.

Thus, I will boldly conclude this article by reaffirming what I stated earlier, “AJAH EXCEL has Caused a serious Revolution in Campus Entrepreneurship”

Religion / How To Overcome The Love Of Money by chikachuks1(m): 2:59pm On Oct 21, 2018
In this article, i want to state some biblical points on how to control and overcome your love for money. I have earlier written an article titled, "The danger of the love of money"http://www.christianityupdate.com/blog/love-of-money/. Before i proceed to present my points, let me state and comment a little bit on these 2 important Bible passages.

Genesis. 47:15

“And when money failed in the land of Egypt, and in the land of Canaan, all the Egyptians came unto Joseph, and said, Give us bread: for why should we die in thy presence? For the money faileth”.

Many marriages have crashes because money has failed.

Many friendships has broken because money failed

Children no longer respect and honour their parents because money has failed in the family.

Many ministers has left the ministry because money has failed.

Many people are frustrated in life because money has failed.

When money failed…. I want to inform everyone that a time will (must) come when money will fail in our lives. As we all know, money can buy bed but not sleep. Money can food but not appetite. Money can make you have a girlfriend but money cannot buy true love

Permit me to ask this question. If your priorities and attentions are placed on money, what will be your hope when money fails?

Billionaires are dying of sicknesses that a simple prayer of faith could have healed. Yet their money could not save them

Proverbs 23:4-5

“Labour not to be rich: cease from thine own wisdom. Wilt thou set thine eyes upon that which is not? For riches certainly make themselves wings; they fly away as an eagle toward heaven”.

Money is part of the meat that perish which Jesus admonished us not to labor for. If money does not fail then it will vanish

Check your neighborhood you will find some men who were extremely well to do but currently they beg for daily bread. They make their living out of so much difficulty. Oh, how the money vanished.

May we not love things that will vanish and fail more than things of eternal value. May we not be guilty of having the love of money in our live.

Having said all these, I therefore recommend these few things

Be a God chaser not money chaser

The greatest event in your life will be to die and resurrect at the feet of Jesus. If you gather all the money in the world, a dime will not leave this planet with you at death. If you think it’s a lie ask Michael Jackson, Paul Allen and Steve jobs. If we so have the love of money, what will be of the money when we are no more. At the point of death, it will never matter if or not we had money while we were yet in this world. If hell is our final destination, all the money in this world will never pull a soul out of it. All the money in this world are nothing to bribe our ways into heaven.

Lay up your treasure in heaven

Remember that where your treasure is, there your heart will be. Our billionaires face series of shocks when there is a little drop in the stock market because it will affect their net worth. But nothing moves a man whose treasures are fixed in heaven. Also bear it in mind that the richer you become the more your kidnapping value increases. Meaning that rich men are not secured

As your soul prosper

Our brother John prayed that we prosper as our soul prospers. This means that the prosperity of our soul is more important. As a Christian, your bank account should never prosper more than your soul

Seek God

2Chr 26:5 “And he sought God in the days of Zechariah, who had understanding in the visions of God: and as long as he sought the LORD, God made him to prosper”. As long as we seek God, God will keep prospering us

Be content with what you have

I pity billionaires because at the point of death many people whom they do not know will inherit their wealth. A story was told of one of the richest men in china who at the point of death was worth $1.9B. After his death, his widowed wife married his driver who in turn inherited all his boss wealth. So he said, “I thought I was working for my boss but I just found out that my boss was the one working for me”. In my discretion, a rich man is someone who can foot his financial needs at all-time whether he has large savings in the bank or not

Live in obedience to God’s word

Deut 28:1 And it shall come to pass, if thou shalt hearken diligently unto the voice of the LORD thy God, to observe and to do all his commandments which I command thee this day, that the LORD thy God will set thee on high above all nations of the earth: 28:2 And all these blessings shall come on thee, and overtake thee, if thou shalt hearken unto the voice of the LORD thy God.

If you have studied your bible closely, you will find out that every promise of God has an accompanying conditions or commandment. Hence the surest way of getting those blessings is by obeying God

In conclusion, God still blesses people but do not run faster than God. There has never been a man who ran faster than God and ended well. You will not be the first if you try it. Therefore allow things to fall into place as God has planned it

Thanks and God bless.

Religion / The Danger Of The Love Of Money by chikachuks1(m): 2:35pm On Oct 21, 2018
As rightly said by the Holy Scripture, “money answers all things”. Yet it is so vital and important to understand that the love of money is the root of “all evil”. Pause a little bit and check out all the evil activities going on in your environment, you will find out that they are traced to the love of money. People steal for the love of money.

Kidnapping is done because of the love of money.

Tons of people involve in prostitution for the love of money

It is the love of money that make people join cultism.

Politicians and leaders loot money, it is because of the love of money.

I could go on and on to trace lots of evil things people do for the love of money. The foundation I want to lay is to back up the Scripture that says, “The love of money is the root of all evil”. Take note of the phrase “all evil”. It’s an absolute irony to know that the same substance that answers all things is the same substance that loving it leads to all kinds of evil.

1Timothy.6:6-10

1Tim 6:6 but godliness with contentment is great gain.

6:7 for we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out.

6:9 but they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition.

6:10 for the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.

As we all know, money is a unit of exchange. Truth be said, no church, organization, person or group can do without money. Money in itself is not wrong but loving it makes it wrong. I want to focus this article on the approach many people use in getting it. Unfortunately, Christians have also become involved in the mad pursuit of money

We live in a generation where the rat race for wealth has increased beyond imagination. At a time when the church and individuals are supposed to sincerely prepare to herald the coming of Christ, unfortunately the devil has used the desire for wealth to deceive many. Compare the rate at which people pursue money today with the rate at which it was done about 15 years ago, you will find out that it has far more than doubled

I pray that the Holy Spirit will use this little piece of work to direct our life better. I pray that we will have a better and clearer view towards our pursuit for money
“Those that will be rich fall into temptations”

Our text says, “Those that will be rich fall into temptations”. Let me state that it is not wrong for us to crave to be wealthy because God has given us the power to make wealth as the Holy Scripture says.

But those that will be rich in this context refers to those who want to break the natural law and protocols of achieving wealth. We know that there are set down principles to become wealthy. Some of them include; Paying tithe, hard work, generosity, patience etc. But those that will be rich will want to bypass these principles.

By bypassing these principles many fall into the temptation of getting involved in things that do not glorify God.

You will see that in our time, many people who are employed and paid by organizations most especially government workers will charge you money in order to render a service which the government pays them to do

Business men and women tell unnecessary lies to make more profit as a result of the love of money.

Companies now reduce the quality of their products just to make more profit – love of money.

Unfortunately many people pay attention to those politicians whose extort our treasuries and forget that even the little extortion they do are still sinful before God

Church men and women, youths and adult have become guilty of this

No wonder the devils seems to have an upper hand in the battle because many of those who are supposed to wage war against him have diverted their attentions to pursuing money at all cost

In our time, one of the fastest growing industry is the betting and gambling industry. Billions of Dollars are been invested into betting and gambling yearly. This is as a result of the desire to be wealthy. If you check around you will observe the proliferation and expansion of ponzi schemes like MMM, ultimate cycler, givers forum etc.

Those that will be rich… Today we hear cases of money rituals, kidnapping, and many other vices. All these are done just to rich – the love of money

You have not killed anybody to be rich but I tell you that if your attention has become fully centered on money more than Jesus then you are guilty

If you desire to make money so that you can join the elite class in the society then you’re guilty also

Many young guys at ages less than 28 now live in luxury because of the money they made in an ungodly way. If you admire and desire to be like them, then you are guilty
“While many covet after, they have erred from the faith”

While many covet after, they have erred from the faith. It then means that loving money and loving Jesus are two parallel places where you cannot be at the same time. If any man loves the world, then the love of the father is not in him
“The love of money is the root of all evil”

The love of money is the root of all evil. Once again, it pains my heart to know that the same money which answers all things is the same money which the love is the root of all evil.

How painful is it to know that men who should have amounted to something profitable in God’s hand have become trash in the devils hand because they erred from the faith while pursuing money

We no longer talk of politicians who loot the nation’s treasuries because many pastors loot their church fund as well
“they pierce themselves through with many sorrows”

While doing this, they pierce themselves through with many sorrows. There is never anything in this world that causes sorrow more than departing from the plans and purpose of God. The love of money has made many people pierce themselves through with many sorrows. People no longer sleep peacefully because of the feeling of insecurity caused by their wealth.

Rich men can hardly walk in the street of many developed cities without security for the fear of been kidnapped.

Mat 6:33 “But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you”.

Anytime you stop chasing the substance, you begin to chase the shadow. When we no longer burn for God, we begin to burn for the world

We have seen people who have made wealth outside God. Externally they are good to go but internally, they are miserable. When the soul no longer has peace and joy, then any other thing we can achieve is trash

As Christians, we must understand that there is a timing and plan for everything. The gift of God make rich a man without adding any sorrow

God still blesses his people. But if you cut corners you will end up offending God

Before I bring this subject matter to a close, let me draw our attention to these two passages
Genesis.

Religion / What Is The Meaning Of AMEN? by chikachuks1(m): 3:22pm On Oct 20, 2018
You end all your prayers with the phrase “In Jesus name I pray Amen”. Have you tried to find out the meaning of the word “AMEN”. If no, then this article is written to help you out. If yes, then you are in the right website as your inquiries will be fully taken care of.

The word “AMEN” is no strange word to any Christian. It is also commonly used in other religions like Islam and Judaism. In Christianity, it is used as a word of confirmation and affirmation to all our prayers.

The word AMEN means “it is so” or “so it be.” It is derived from the Hebrew āmēn, which means “certainty,” “truth,” and “verily.” In prayer, it is used to express absolute faith in a faithful God. It is a way of affirming that we believe that God has the ability and will grant our petitions.

AMEN is the Bible’s supreme expression of assent. By saying amen, we mean much more than simple agreement. It is a remarkable word because it allows us to succinctly articulate “Praise the Lord” and “I agree”. For example, Jeremiah agrees with the words of Hananiah, a fellow prophet, by saying: “Amen! May the Lord do so; may the Lord fulfill the words that you have prophesied” (Jer. 28:6). It is used in many places in the Scripture to mean “So be it”.

This powerful word comes from the Hebrew root אמן (a-m-n) that is also related to the word אֱמוּנָה (emunah) which means “faith”.

Interestingly, it is classified as an adjective which describes states and moods. This word is not another “Yes” or “No”. When a person says Amen, they commit themselves to a state of conscious agreement, judgement and faith. In the Bible, having faith is not just a question of being spiritually awake, but of being firmly committed to one’s religious identity.

As we append our signatory to important and relevant documents, so also is AMEN a signatory we append to our prayer as a sign of total agreement.

There are three major formats in which AMEN is used;
1) To conclude our private or group prayer
2) In response to a prayer prayed by a spiritual leader.
3) In confirmation of agreement to a statement made by someone

Sadly, AMEN is one of the word commonly misused in Christianity. For example, many preachers are fond of saying it intermittently in their sermons. Others use it carelessly in statements like testimonies. An example is a case of someone sharing a testimony. He starts his testimony with a statement like, “I was traveling to California and along the way… AMEN”. At this point the person just introduce the word. We must endeavour to refraim from using the word careless.

In the King James Version, AMEN appeared about 78 times.

The word AMEN appear in all the books of the New Testament except Acts, James and 3John. It was mostly used by Apostle Paul as He made use of it in concluding all his epistles.

In conclusion, we express our faith to God through prayers. This prayers contains our petitions to the Most High God. We seal our prayers with this-all-powerful word of faith and acclamation.

NYSC / Dear Ex Corps Member, Nigeria Has Nothing For You by chikachuks1(m): 6:55pm On Oct 18, 2018
After NYSC what next? This is a multi million dollar question which many corp members fail to answer even on the day of the passing out parade. Many years were spent in secondary and tertiary institutions and the one year for the National Youth Service Corp. It is expected that if your life had no direction during your school days, then within the one year of your National Service, give it a direction. But unfortunately, I have met with many corp members at the verge of passing out with this simple question: After NYSC, what next? Unfortunately the answer that was widely given is “I don’t know”. If at the point of passing out you do not know what next, then when do you intend to know it?

It a bitter and sad truth that the country has no plans for her youths. Truth be told, the double allowance you receive before your passing out parade is the governments’ way of saying “we have settled you, we owe you nothing again”. After NYSC, all roads leads to the labour market. Many people call it favour market, but what so ever you choose to call it, it is still a market. The rat race for survival automatically begins at this point and you must get something doing else…

Although it may not be easy, yet it will be easier for those who has already planned themselves. Unfortunately as we see in the country that there are not jobs, we must get something doing. If the the job does not look for you, go look for the job. Below is a picture on an article in the Ebocopa magazine for the 2017/2018 Batch A corps members on page 19. The article is titled get something doing. On the picture, crafts in which one can involve his or herself we shown. But unfortunately, looking at the picture closely is a clear proof that the government has no plans for you.

On the picture, you see a young man working as a bus conductor. Another one as a bike man (Okada). Another as a pure water hawker and so on. The question is, “how do we expect graduates to get involved in bus conductor, okada and hawking?” As much as we talk about humbling yourself and starting small, this one is really out of it. A closer look at the society will make you understand that the higher percentage of touts in town are those involved in bus conductor.
After many years of refinement in the higher institution, the government wants you to become unrefined again.

Once again, truth be told, Nigeria Government has no plans for her youths. As much as we complain that there are no jobs in the country, yet Nigeria has enough money to create employments for the youths or even sponsor empowerment schemes that will in turn create jobs. Beloved ex corps members, may I sadly inform you that Nigeria has no plan for your welfare. The country owes you a lot but might not pay you a dime. Actually, it is supposed to be that after serving the country for one year, the country should serve you for life. But I don’t seem to understand how the opposite became the case. You serve your country and your country in turn does nothing for you.

Therefore, at this point, wise up and help yourself. Start something little but be mindful of what you get yourself involved in. Little drops of water makes a mighty ocean. Be industrious. A frustrated man is a man who gives up on himself. If the government and environment has given up on you, make sure you do not give up on yourself. Get something doing. An idle man is the devils workshop so therefore get busy. Though it might not be rosy but tough times to not last. Rather, tough people do. See it as though nobody owes you anything. Work and work very hard.

During the Passing Out Parade, more than 2,000 corps members Passed out from Ebonyi state. Then multiply the number by 37 and see what it is. Then as the government of her plans for this people. You will find out that there are absolutely no plans. The government has failed in her responsibility, but that is not a reason for you to fail. Work and walk your way to the top and God will help you. If you have a skill please put it to use. If you are knowledgeable in one way or the other, please do not slack. Put your hands somewhere.

Education / Is Education Really The Key? by chikachuks1(m): 6:42pm On Oct 18, 2018
Severally, we have heard people say that education is the key. From the early primary school, we were thought that education is the key. We were made to understand that education is the highest gift parents can give to their children.

But I want to ask this question from my sincere heart, “is education the key?” Looking at our education system, can we boldly say that education is the key? Year by year, thousands of people are graduated from various higher institutions in the country and yet there are no jobs. Should we still agree that education is the key?
Jack Ma (founder and CEO of Alibaba and also the richest man in china) told his son, “If you want to be rich, don’t go to school”. I want to use this point to state some clear points we should expect in order to ascertain if or not education is the key.

The desire of all parents is that their children have a better financial life in the future. The dream of every young man is to by financially successful. The dream of every young lady is to get married to a rich man and also have her own money. Hence we go to school to receive quality education which will help us unlock the door of great fortunes. When a key can no longer open a padlock, then it is clearly evident that it is the wrong key.

Can we claim that education is the key when the richest black man is not formally educated? Can we say that education is the key when we have millions of graduates on the street looking for jobs years after graduation?

Sometimes I get fully amazed with the number of students been admitted into higher institutions yearly. On the average, no less than 500,000 students are admitted into the higher institution.

Yearly, not less than 500,000 students graduate from higher institutions across the country. Study has shown that less than 40% of the number of people who graduate yearly are gainfully employed 5 years after graduation. With this, let me ask once again, is education the key?

Before now, I published an article titled, “Why Nigerian graduates are unemployable”. It is obvious that even after spending an average of 21 years in the education system, chances are that there might still be no jobs.

If education is the key, then permit me to ask a question, “education is the key to what”? We must understand this subject fully so that we will know what we are into. What padlock does education open?

education is the key

Many people said that success is determined by how much you have. If that is to be true, then how much have your education earned you? When education does not open the door of financial fortune, then I dare to say that education has become a wrong key.

As I progress in this article, I will present 4 main points upon which this content will be centered upon.
1) Education is a key, not the only key
2) If education is a business then it is not so profitable.
3) Learn a skill or business
4) Do not cast all your eggs in one basket

Education / What To Look Out For During SIWES by chikachuks1(m): 11:35am On Oct 09, 2018
SIWES which stands for Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme also referred to as Industrial Training (IT) by Universities and Polytechnics but known as Teaching Practice by Colleges of Education is a platform created to enhance students’ knowledge.
In general term, SIWES is referred to as Internship. The slogan for SIWES is “bridging the gap between theory and practical”. Hence, this scheme must be taken very serious in order to enhance students knowledge.

Earlier on, I published an article titled, “why Nigerian graduates are unemployable” https://infoducation.com.ng/why-nigerian-graduates-are-unemployable/. The point I presented as number eleven (11) is “poor internship scheme”. If after the SIWES experience and you cannot boast of an increased practical knowledge, then I guess the scheme was not properly used.

In this article, I want to present few things every student should expect during SIWES, no matter how short the duration might be. Different schools and departments have different timing for this exercise. Some universities do it twice. Some once. Polytechnics do it once and it last for a period of one year. So on and so forth.
https://infoducation.com/what-to-look-out-for-during-siwes/

But before I articulate what you should expect during SIWES, let me state some mistakes students make. This could be the reason why students are not able to bridge the gap between theory and practical

1) More focus on money than knowledge: The very first thing I want to criticize in this article is that students pay more attention on making money than gaining knowledge. Money must be made, yet the money is not the first and primary intention of SIWES. Your attention should be on the knowledge most importantly. Today, everyone wants to get a SIWES placement in an oil company or high paying organization. But make sure you use this period to gain knowledge. The knowledge you gain during your SIWES will last longer than the money you will ever make during this period – no matter the amount.

2) SIWES in an unrelated field: The second mistake people make is doing SIWES in an unrelated field. For example, I had a friend who studied computer science in her undergraduate years but during her SIWES, she worked as a sales girls in a food stuff selling shop. Where then is the knowledge she stands to gain. In looking for a place for your Industrial Training, ensure that you look for a place related to your field. With this, you can boast yourself of increased knowledge after the scheme.

3) The time is too short: Sadly, many students see this period as too short and therefore cannot do anything meaningful with the time. For example, in the university I attended, at the end of your second years, you go for an Industrial Training which lasts between 2-4 months. As such, some people think that this period is too short and as such nothing meaningful can be achieved therein. This mindset and mentality must change for you to learn during your SIWES. Think about this, most times you go for holidays that lasts shorter than one month. Yet you never see this one month as too short to travel. Therefore, 2-4 months for SIWES is not short at all.

4) Seating at home: Unfortunately, many students use this period to rest from the stress they passed through during the previous semester. This period must fully put into use.

Let me go ahead to state few things you should lookout for, expect and do during your SIWES.

Knowledge: Since the goal of SIWES is to bridge the gap between theory and practical, then the primary focus of every student should be to gain more practical knowledge. In the classroom, everything is limited to the whiteboard/blackboard and your notebook. But in the field of Industrial Training, you are made to see real and practical things that will aid the theoretical ideas you have already. So, pay rapt attention to learning everything and anything you can learn within this few weeks and months.

Build relationship: If we meet today, I cannot guarantee if you could be the one to save my life tomorrow. In like manner, you cannot guarantee if I am the one that will save your life tomorrow. Therefore, use this short period to build strong and lasting relationship that could take you farther than you widest imagination.

Build connections: I should have written this point under the one above since connection and relationships are almost the same. But I rather chose to separate them. During your SIWES, pay attention to building strong connections that might earn your serious recommendation in the future. For example, after my NYSC scheme, I was called for an interview in the same place I did my Industrial Training, yet I never applied for such job. The vacancy came out and my director who I work under asked me to bring my relevant documents, which she submitted herself.

This is the power of a strong connection I built during my SIWES period. If after your SIWES and your boss cannot write a strong recommendation for you, then you failed. So in your IT period, you can help yourself build a future for yourself. How do you build connection during your SIWES? Well building connection can only be done when your boss and other colleagues love what you do and your approach to work.

Work experience: Another important thing to lookout for is an ample work experience. This work experience can help boost your Curriculum Vitae and in turn improve your employability. Remember that you must defend your IT when your department deems fit. So do not waste anytime at all. Use this medium as a platform to get good job experience. As I earlier stated, I got a recommendation for a job after my NYSC. During the interview, I found that the job description was exactly the same with what I did during SIWES years back. Hence, I was more preferred than every other candidate. You never can tell anything about tomorrow so make sure you do your very best at all times and in all places.

Organizational processes and activities: If you are fully involved in the SIWES scheme, you will learn about organization, their processes and activities. With this, you will be able to know if you can fit in in future or not.

CONCLUSION
As I bring this article to a close, let me wish you the best in your SIWES. But ensure you abide by these few recommendations I have made above. Also make sure that at the end, it will be said that you were able to bridge the gap between theory and practical. If you are able to do so, then the goal of SIWES was achieved. Unfortunately, if you are not able to do so, it then means that such goals was not achieved.

Education / After School: And What If You Do Not Get Admission? by chikachuks1(m): 12:17pm On Sep 22, 2018
What are your core activities after school? With the current education system of our nation, you will find out that many secondary school leavers do not immediately get admission into the higher institution to further their studies. The big question now is, between the time you graduate from secondary school to the time you finally get admission, what do you do?

Recently, I got involved in a chat with a guy who wanted to use our platform to secure a scholarship to study abroad. As we proceeded in the conversation, he told me he graduated from secondary school 9 years ago. At this point, I got interested in knowing what he used these 9 whooping years to do. Unfortunately, there was nothing much he achieved within these nine years. Permit me to say that these 9 years were fully wasted years.

For crying out loud, nine years is enough for you to enhance your usefulness. Why seat at home after secondary school and doing nothing when there are loads of things to do. Let me remind you that time wasted cannot be regained. You can regain many things after wasting them, but as for time, you cannot regain it at all. I am also guilty of this subject I am writing on and that is why I do not want you to make the mistake I and many others made.

You are bound to make certain mistakes as a human being. Most especially, when you lack advisers. For that reason, we at infoducation has taken it upon ourselves to provide meaningful counseling to as many people as we can. For more details, like our Facebook page and join our group. You can also contact us via whatsapp on (+234) 7064635053 or call us on (+234) 8160047711 for consultancy services (though it is not a free service). We will not stop until the aim of imparting and impacting values and virtues into young Nigerians is achieved.

So after secondary school and you do not get admission immediately, what do you do? Before I go ahead to outline what you should do, let me state clearly what you should not do.

1) Do not always sit at home seeing movies: The first thing you should not do after your secondary school is that you should not convert that time to seeing movies. Many young secondary school leavers convert this time to seeing movies and as a result, there is hardly any recent movie they have not seen. More surprisingly is the fact that most of them have seen almost every season film you can ever talk of. This is the first principle of time mismanagement. If you have been indulging in this act of constant movie watching, it is time to halt. The point here is not to discourage anyone from watching movies but rather apply you time wisely.

2) It is not time for resting and relaxation: Another thing worthy of note is that this is not time for resting and relaxation. You wake up early in the morning, do your morning chores, eat, bath, go out, come back and nothing reasonable is achieved. No, this is not time for such lifestyles. If you must succeed, then be informed that resting and relaxation comes at the end of the work. It will be foolishness to begin your resting along the way. Resting and relaxation will be enjoyed at the end or when success is achieve.

3) Do not glory yet: It is not yet time to start glorying. You are not the first person to graduate from secondary school. Many of the dropouts today have their O level. Therefore, there is nothing special about you finishing your secondary school. In one of my previous articles titled “advice to fresh graduates”, I clearly stated that they should not glory yet. If as a university graduate, you ought not to glory yet, then think of it as a secondary school leaver. Your main focus should be on what next and not just glorying and celebrating.

4) Do not always visit friends: As much as we encourage relationships and building friendship, yet this time should not be fully devoted to visiting friends. Experts have said that relationships and friendships will be better among people who have already succeeded. When you have made it big and your friends have also made it, that is when friendship will become as sweet as honey. When you and your friends will have their exotic cars. Think about it.

5) Do not always be online: At this time, for many people, it is all about Facebook, Whatsapp, instagram and so on and so forth. But unfortunately, this is not the time for that. Yes we must continue with our social lives but not to the extreme. Truly, in this 21st century, to stay updated, you cannot do without these social platforms. But the point here is that you should apply moderation. Be moderate in your use of the internet and do not abuse it.

6) It is not a time to read every novel: Reading is good. Yet we must differentiate between reading to learn and reading as a result of joblessness. At this stage, many people begin to read various novels as a result of their joblessness. This will not profit you in any way. If you must read ensure you read books that will enhance your knowledge. Read profitably.

7) Do not become a commercial bus conductor: Have you discovered that most bus conductors end up as touts? You might think that you are doing it in order to help yourself become industrious, yet little by little, you are been lost to the unmerciful hands of toutism. Therefore, of all things that pleases and catches your fancy, do not choose the profession of a commercial bus conductor as an option.

At this point, we have stated some things you should not be fully involved into because you are through with your secondary education. Therefore, let me proceed to outline few things you can do or should do within this period to enhance your usefulness.

After secondary school, what next? Keep reading. I am not trying to contradict the point I stated clearly when I asked you not to put all your efforts into reading novels. But I must encourage to you keep reading relevant books that helps you. For example, since you will proceed to the higher institution, endeavor to keep reading constantly and continuously. As much as learning never ends, then reading should also never end. You need to keep on reading in order to prepare for JAMB. You need to keep on reading in order to constantly refresh your brain.
Get a job

The next advice I have for every secondary school leaver is to get a job. Idleness will not do you any good. Get a job that will always take you out of your home. Work hard and who knows if you will be able to save up enough money to process your admission into higher institution. But, I will not advice that you pick up any kind of job that comes across your way. For example as a young chap doing security job and sometimes, he will be on night duty. There will be a great sense of insecurity. This will become like the case when a security man needs security. In like manner, know what you want before looking for a job. Know the kind of job you want before you venture into job hunting, but ensure that you do not become lazy.
Become an extra lesson tutor

To enhance your usefulness while waiting, become an extra lesson tutor. This will help keep your academically sound and fresh. There are lots of tutorial centers you can seek jobs. Many centers prepare students for their next examinations so therefore you can enroll into any. This will provide you an opportunity to earn while teaching.
Acquire a skill

Endeavor to acquire a profitable skill, seeing that the future is fully unpredictable and not certain of what it carries. There are lots of profitable skill out there for you to learn. Also considering the fact that nobody can guarantee that you will be offered admission. Bearing this in mind, then ensure that you learn a skill not considering the time available you.

Higher institutions will only give you a paper-like certificate. No one knows if your practical knowledge will be enhanced. Therefore do not joke with the concept of acquiring a skill. Some skill to learn include, photography, mechanic, welding, painting, carpentry, tailoring, liquid soap making, bead making, baking, decoration etc. Therefore do not waste meaningful time doing meaningless things.
Get a computer skill

The role of a computer skill in this generation cannot be overemphasized. Therefore, in all your getting, get a computer skill. Learn packages like, Microsoft word, excel, power point, Corel draw and other important skills. Do not forget to also pay attention to learning one or more programing language. Also try website design and lots more.
Start up a business

CONCLUSION

In conclusion, make sure that after your secondary school, you do not just waste your time waiting for admission. Does it mean that if admission does not come, you will not achieve anything? Therefore, pay undivided attention to enhancing your usefulness.

Education / Things To Consider Before Choosing An Institution by chikachuks1(m): 11:49am On Sep 22, 2018
As the popular saying goes, “Learning never ends”, I want to dedicate this article to every prospective student in any higher institution. There are lots of things to consider in choosing an institution to attend. You will surely not wake up early in the morning and decide to attend any institution. Thorough research and study must be carried out and as such your decisions will be enhanced. Here are few of those things you should consider before choosing a higher institution.

1) Your desired course: The first thing you ought to do in choosing an institution is to consider if or not the institution offers your desired course. There are some institutions that do not offer your desired course and as such, there is no need of wasting your time in seeking admission into that institution.

2) Accreditation: The next thing to consider in choosing a higher institution is whether the institution is accredited by the appropriate bodies. The body in charge of universities is National Universities Commission (NUC). The body in charge of Polytechnics and monotechnics is known as National Board For Technical Education (NBTE) and the body in charge of Colleges of education is known as National commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE). It is important to verify if the institution is accredited or not in order to avoid unpleasant distractions during your studies. Most times, any institution that is not accredited is referred to as illegal. Anything illegal will be shut down at the point of discovery.

3) Location: The location of the institution which you want to attend is another important thing to consider before choosing an institution. Many parents will love their children to study in institutions not-too-far from home for reasons best known to them. Others will not want their children to study in places where they do not have any family relation. Therefore, the location of your choice institution also matters.

4) Type of Institution: The next thing is to know the type of institution you want to attend. Do you want to attend a university, college of education, polytechnic or monotechnic? This must also be fully and duly considered in choosing an institution to attend. Hopefully, we will work on an article that provides a total breakdown of the features of each of these type of institution and why each of them is unique in their own way. But for now, if you are after the certificate, a university will be more advised. If you are more interested in practical knowledge, then a polytechnic will go well. Then if been a teacher is your topmost priority, then college of education will be the best option for you.

5) Standard/facilities: Never forget to also take into cognizance the standard and available facilities in the institution you want to attend. Many institution lack infrastructure and as such, the study environment will not be so conducive. Some have dilapidated and abandoned structures into which they want to admit students. Therefore, ensure you make full inquiries about the structures available. Then, what are the standards of the school. Many school have fully lost their standards. There are some institutions where you must pay to pass a course. There are some where examination malpractice have become a norm and fully allowed. So ensure also you take full account of the standard of the institution.

6) Ownership: In choosing an institution you want to attend, do not forget to check on the ownership. Is it a Federal, State or Private institution? This must be fully considered. Most especially in considering the financial strength of your sponsors. Private institutions are the most expensive institutions and as such, if your sponsors are not financially buoyant, then it will not be the best option. State owned institutions are the next most expensive while Federal owned institutions are the cheapest. So you must consider well, the ownership of the institution before concluding on the institution.

7) Monetary involvement: How rich or poor are your sponsors? There are many institutions that demands lots of money and as such, your sponsors might not be able to afford it. There are some institutions where you must buy every single textbook recommended or else you might not pass. There are also institutions where buying of textbooks are not compulsory (like the institution I attended). So check for the institution that will give you high value at a cheaper rate.

cool Recommendation: Most times, the surest way to making choices is by recommendations from trusted people. That is why in decision making, the role of advisers should not be overlooked at all. Going through the university website might not be enough because they will definitely not tell you their flaws. So recommendation from senior friends is strongly advised. In most cases, the recommendations of those who are not directly involved in the school (not employed in the school) will be more authentic.

9) Ranking: In choosing an institution, consider the National and Global ranking of the institutions. These rankings are done with reliable indices that are trusted. Therefore, the ranking also matters.

10) Social menace like cultism: Social menace also affects the security of the school. It will not make any sense attending an institution which has no sense of security. From one cult activity to another. From one killing to another. Consider all these carefully before finalizing on your choice.

CONCLUSION
Let me conclude this article in the same way I started it. There are lots of things to consider in choosing a higher institution. You will surely not wake up early in the morning and decide to attend any institution. Thorough research and study must be carried out and as such your decisions will be enhanced. Follow these steps carefully and I bet you will not make any mistake and regret at the end of the matter.
