Balogun never reached out. Leon himself confirmed Keshi called him up to ask him if he would be willing to play for SE. Vicmo was definitely spoken to as well before he decided to rep the GWG. Reaching out doesn't mean you will be perpetually going after a player if he says no. It's about letting them know that if they change their minds the door is always open. Tobias that initially said yes changed his mind heaven didn't collapse. Lookman that categorically said no he's now in the fold. TheGoodJoe:
Have a policy of them reaching out to us. Nathan Tella is a recent example. He made it known that he has a desire to play for us. We did not need to convince him. He is passionate for the team. We saw same with others like Balogun.
Have an open policy for them to reach out to us when they want to play for us.

The same way we ''begged'' Victor Moses that year and thankfully we have an AFCON title to show for it. TheGoodJoe:
We did not beg. We called them to CONVINCE them
Pure begging.
Pinnick: Please now, play.
Olise: No.
Pinnick: Consider us now. Ah ah. We are a great side.
Olise: No.
Pinnick: What can I do for you to help you change your mind.
Olise: If you qualify for the world cup, I will go.
Thunder fire your world cup mouth. |

Bros how else do you want them to show this passion by getting nailed on a cross? Balogun has suffered countless injuries playing for SE yet he's ever committed. Aina was crying hot tears after our loss to Tunisia. Aribo always committed as well. Ebuehi despite not being in the original squad for 2021 afcon didn't pull diva stunts when he was called up as a replacement. Even the local ones how can you measure their commitment and passion? Players we have to beg and pamper to show up for a match. Ordinary bench that Dennis was sitting for Moses Simon he was giving rohr attitude. Aina and Tyrone that were ignored a lot of times in favor of shehu still showed commitment to the team. TheGoodJoe:
What is the use recruiting these players with scientific orientation if they have little to no passion for the team.
Will the scientific training give them the passion to play for us?
I did not say we do not need them. I said change the policy and keep to those who show desire to play for us. It is fruitless trying to convince them because you will just get the camp filled with players with no passion for the team.
By the way, Iheanacho was one of the best players in the EPL last year. I do not think football is too scientific for him. |

I appreciate your concerns about the risk of the national team being populated with mercenaries like the Kevin Prince Boateng's of this world but the brutal reality is that if we want to stay competitive we would need the foreign based contingent to seriously beef our ranks. The foreign born players get early and quality coaching unfortunately our bright young stars don't get. Football like someone said has gone fully scientific. Even when you discover talents local talents you still have to rely on foreign clubs to polish them something most foreign born players have already under gone. It's good we continue to groom and encourage our young talents but not shun the talented foreign guys too. These two approaches can be adopted simultaneously. The important goal in all of this is getting the best players to rep Naija. No single approach should be followed so single mindedly that the quality of the team suffers i.e. giving chances to a local prospect who is yet to live up to expectation while ignoring a genuinely talented foreign born player who might need just a little convincing. TheGoodJoe:
I repeat. The door should stay open to them. However, I disagree we do not have a good system. We have a system but the current NFF have chosen to abandon it.
We should prioritize our National youth development structure. Even with a poor structure,we still raised Amoo and Samson Tijani.
Let us roll our sleeves and get to work. Have a thorough comprehensive scouting structure and a working template.
We can raise good players for the team. Coupled with thorou scouting of our local system.
Any foreign born or based player can reach out but convincing is a no no for me. |

Our top strikers are 1. Osimhen 2. Onuachu 3. Ighalo 4. Sadiq In that order. Awoniyi has slipped a bit while Moffi is out of it. Joebie: I have seen Sadiq in the national team. And my verdict is he is our #2 man! Osimhen is still the man. All the things Victor is being criticised for lately is just as a result of his recent games. Victor is still far from his full potential yet. And you know what that means. |

Well said. He needs to also be more efficient in front of goal. The little bit I've watched of him since his return to injury it seems he's always trying to force the issue. It's understandable considering he's supposed to be his club's top marksman, which comes with the added pressure to perform but knowing how to position yourself and when to make good use of your attributes to your advantage is something he still needs to work on. Like Goodjoe posited maybe going to the wings occasionally could help him gel further with his strike partners. drDoom3: The irony is that he was better at all those when he was in Lille. Ligue 1 is a very physical league, so having muscle and pace alone does not suffice. He had to learn finishing, positioning, and link up to succeed at Lille. Victor rarely missed one-on-ones at Lille, he was very efficient in his shooting especially at the beginning of the season.
Apparently, Serie A is not as physical, coincidentally, Victor was also adding muscle. It seems he started overrelying on physical dominance to oust opponents and his development in other areas regressed to an extent. For games against smaller clubs where you don't need to be prime Ronaldo technically to succeed, he was performing as expected. However, against bigger teams where strength is not enough and things like positioning and tactical awareness come into play, he seems to struggle. I would argue he should probably have stayed one more season at Lille to hone his tactical abilities before making the big money move. |

Now this is your problem and the reason why people drag you here on this thread. You assume other countries will remain stagnant and not improve while you continue to grow which very laughable. Your 'vibrant economy' relies heavly on aid and loans to build basic infrastructure. Your debt to GDP ratio is close to 70%. your trade deficit is a joke. Your population uses less power than Ghana that has at the very least 20 million people less than your country. The Nigerian 'zoo' controls your IT sector, owns your banks, sponsors your football league and build your roads. You clowns have yet to conquer slums and you're dreaming of surpassing serious countries that have no such problems? You rafiki are a textbook case of delusions of grandeur. rvp2018: Algeria is hopeless - a country without any private sector. Kenya will zoom past it. Their economy has tanked from 180B dollars to 140B dollars 0 now 160B. Kenya has a vibrant private and domestic economy. Nigeria is a zoo. The South Africans are busy waiting for us to overtake them in 10yrs. They cannot move forward. They are stuck. |

I suspect FIFA will increase the squad numbers so it may be 2 out of the 4 names you mentioned. Onyekuru looks most in danger. All this is conjecture sef let's just pray to qualify first yinkeys: Will these guys be at the World Cup Umar Sadiq, Taiwo Awoniyi, Emmanuel Dennis, Henry Onyekwuru
If the squad max is 23 & I’m a betting man, only Dennis makes the list amongst these guys. He can play anywhere upfront Especially with the inclusion of Lookman & possibly Eze. Only 2 strikers that’d surely be listed are Onuachu & Osimhen |

If we're talking finishing Onuachu is definitely better than all our strikers even Osimhen. It's his languid style and lack of pace that's his undoing, but I have no doubt if he's fed with chances he will score most. Nigeria is not known for age falsification.. delete that comment..
Onuachu's problem is the fact that his not fast and doesn't press... Anyone who watch him against West Ham will understand his issues..
It's not just about them doubting his age.. its also about the transfer fee that his club is asking for... |

Playing good football in the long run especially when you have the tools is the way to go especially in league competition but when you're playing tournament or one of matches omo practicality overrides sexiness all day. If we're leading Ghana 1-0 in Cape Coast with one minute to go na to carry ball go corner flag and waste time not to be playing open game because I want to show 'refrshing brand of attacking football'. TheGoodJoe: That is what I am critical of. As soon as you start thinking of equating playing ugly to winning, you set the team for a decline. Our aim is to keep improving as a team. Improving in how well we play and create chances. Not thinking of how to play ugly to win. There is no guarantee playing ugly will make us win.
The most dominant sides in football today play a refreshing brand of football. If our aim is to win, our best bet is to keep improving in our play. Not to win ugly hoping to win.
I disagree with the legend on this. |

I think you are misunderstanding Jay-Jay's comment. He's not saying they shouldn't play beautiful football but have than eyes on the main goal which is qualification. If playing ugly means we qualify so be it. Senegal didn't play sexy football they won AFCON. Egypt served us varying levels of boko haram football they got to the final and were a hair's breadth from winning the whole damn thing. Good but sensible football I think is what Okocha is advocating for. TheGoodJoe:
Okocha should tell us if that was the mindset we used to play Brazil at Atlanta 96. Brazil boasted of some of the best talents in the game. The best player in the world and one of the greatest of all time was there. Ronaldo de Lima. Rivaldo who later became the best player in the world was there too. At that time Roberto Carlos was the second best player in the world. Juninho, Bebeto and some other stars were there.
Yet, we played with bravery and heart. It ended in joy for us.
