PointB:
I actually believe a SE President will not be good for MASSOB, as the President (C-in-C), pushed by other groups/interests will turn his guns at MASSOB to quell their agitation as Yar Adua did against Boko haram.
No need to turn guns on anyone. An Igbo simply being president would defeat their cause. This depends on how the particular igbo president was the people's choice or imposed. Even so, what happens after his term is up? If powers go back to the North or West, marginalization, corruption, and inequality will come back into place. Therefore, there is no point of nigerias existence.

Does the below not sound embicilic and that of a confused bunch with no direction?

President Goodluck Jonathan is ably qualified to run in 2015.He has the constitutional right to vie for a second term of office. However, he has said that he would not run and up till this moment he has not changed the statement. It is based on that statement, that Ndigbo are warming up for one of their sons to take over from him in 2015.But if he changes his mind to run, we have already started to support him. I don’t think we will abandon him half way. We will finish what we have started. I am speaking my mind so the decision to run or not to run is left to him to make and whatever he decides, Ndigbo would sit down and look at it and restrategize. But all I know is that the power that has started going round must be allowed to complete the circle.
Do ya want 2015 Igbo presidency or not? huh

I guess they will force both Igbos and non-Igbos to vote for whoever Ohanaeze says to?  undecided

Is it going to be by physical force which is the language of Nigeria? If so, what force do you even have now? You cant even force a 10year old Igbo child in the village to pay you any mind not to talk of Nigeria, lol  grin

Enugu lawmakers flay Abia’s sack of non-indigenes

On October 12, 2011 · In News

BY Tony Edike

ENUGU- Enugu State House of Assembly, Tuesday, condemned the forceful transfer of non-indigenes in Abia State civil service back to their home states, saying the burden of the N18,000 minimum wage, which had become a national issue, was not a justifiable reason for laying off the workers.

The legislators urged Abia State Government to retain the services of Enugu indigenes in its workforce in order to encourage mutual and sustainable corporate co-existence and peace in the South-East zone.

In a motion brought by the Leader of the House, Sunday Ude-Okoye, which was unanimously endorsed by the members, the lawmakers called on both Abia and Enugu State governments to set up a committee to discuss the modalities of absorbing their respective workforce in terms of civil servants who are not indigenes of each state.

Urging Abia State Government to reinstate the displaced workers, since virtually all the states in the South-East and beyond are represented in Enugu State civil service, the lawmakers, however, alerted the South East Governors’ Forum on the likely dangers and inconveniences that might result from the retaliatory actions of other states in the zone.

Moving the motion which he brought under a matter of urgent public importance, the House leader noted that Enugu State indigenes affected by the action “do not in any way merit the manner Abia State government had thrown them out of their workforce, hiding under the canopy of four unacceptable, irrational, reiterating and unconstitutional reasons.”

He pointed out that Enugu State indigenes resident in Abia State before her creation had lived there very peacefully, contributed immensely in various areas towards her development and assisted in moving the state forward in terms of commerce, social and political growth.

Ude-Okoye added that their children had education and became gainfully employed by the state government.

He stated further that since the affected workers had spent their prime service period working for Abia State government and most of them were about to retire, “these great patriots deserve to be paid retirement benefits when they retire from Abia State government service.

“Disengaging these group of workforce is forcing Enugu State government to inherit payment of service rendered to another state.”

Calling on Abia State government to rescind its decision on the non-indigenes, the lawmaker described the action as a violation of section 42 (sub-section 1, 2 and 3) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999, which stipulates that “a citizen of Nigeria shall not be discriminated against.”

Speaking on the development, Speaker of the House, Eugene Odoh, called for caution, assuring that the matter would be taken before the South East Governors’ Forum in order to seek amicable way of resolving it.

The SE should not have any more state. We can't keep comparing southeast to the north. The north has la arge land mass. The SE lacks land which is why so many Igbo people live in other parts of the country. The SE cannot contain them alone and now they want to divide the little they have into smaller pieceshuh
@ bolded,

You've totally got it wrong. SE is a geo-political zone, so what does the "lack of land" have to do with it?. If for instance they were to add Akwa Ibom and Benue states to the SE wouldn't that alone defeat ur whole "lack of land" argument? They asked for extra states they never said those states had to be solely from within the zone. Anioma is not in the SE, yet and still, they want to join the SE. Again your point is thin.

About your argument of Igbos  living in other parts of the country because of the "lack of land", are you saying that it is because of the "lack of land" that Yorubas live in other parts of  the country, Hausas, Fulanis also?

About the SE not containing the states they have now, Imo, Enugu, and Anambra are being contained very well at this time. This is something we all know. Ebonyi could do way better but it is managed fairly ok too. The only state in the SE thats in shambles is Abia, at that is because of a visionless governor. WIth all that said, your claim makes no sense.

Southeast governors insist on new state

By Chris Oji

Southeast governors yesterday gave a condition for backing the planned constitution amendment: an additional state in their region.

They threatened to withdraw support for the exercise, if they are not given another state.

The Southeast has the least number of states – five – among the six geo-political zones.

To perfect their plan, the governors met in Enugu yesterday.

They resolved to present their report for discussion at the Nigerian Governors Forum (NGF) meeting in Abuja tomorrow.

The governors said it was high time all geo-political zones in the country had equal number of states in the interest of equity, fairness and justice.

Chairman of the Southeast Governors Forum Peter Obi of Anambra State told reporters that they met to articulate a common position and present their demands at the NGF meeting. Constitution amendment was the main agenda at the Enugu meeting.

Obi said if the Southeast’s request for additional state fails to receive priority attention, its five governors would back out of discussions on constitution amendment.

He said: “Basically today (yesterday), we discussed one issue, the issue of constitution amendment, especially as it concerns the creation of an additional state for the zone, to have the same number of states in all the zones of the country.

We are not asking for a particular number of states. We are only calling for equality of states for all the zones and that is what we want.

Imo State Governor Rochas Okorocha said: “If the Northwest zone could have seven states, the Southeast zone could as well have seven. In essence, the Southeast governors are calling for additional states.

The Seventh National Assembly has kick started the process for constitution amendment.

The Senate and the House of Representatives has each constituted Constitution Review Committees.

The committees will collate the position of Nigerians on the amendments in addition to leading the process of amendment.

While Deputy Senate President Ekweremadu chairs the Senate Committee on constitution review, Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives Emeka Ihedioha chairs the Reps’ committee.

Both of them are incidentally from the Southeast.

From PETRUS OBI, Enugu

Monday, October 10, 2011

South East Governors Forum rose from its meeting in Enugu yesterday demanding for the creation of two new states in the zone.
Anambra State Governor and Chairman of the forum, Mr. Peter Obi who fielded questions from newsmen after the meeting said the issue of additional state was the only issue discussed by the governors.

Said he: “Basically today, we discussed only one item, the issue of constitutional amendment, especially as it concerns creation of additional state for the South-east, to have same number of states with other zones. That is basically what we discussed.”

Obi, who was answering questions from reporters shortly after the meeting at Government House, Enugu, stated that the meeting was a single item meeting. He explained that what the forum was demanding for was the equalisation of the number of states in the country.  He continued that the purpose of the meeting was to discuss a constitutional issue that had to do with creation of new states so that the South-east zone could have equal states with other zones in the country.

Obi, who refused to answer further questions, stated that the zone did not care where the states would be created from but all that the people needed was equality in the number of states. He noted that the issue would be canvassed during next week’s governors’ meeting. The meeting was attended by Governors Martin Elechi of Ebonyi; Rochas Okorocha, Imo and Sullivan Chime of Enugu while Theodore Orji of Abia was absent. The meeting, which started at about some minutes to 3pm ended about 3.45pm.

They are constituting some minimum but big prob we are having with the proposed Anioma state. Imagine, if Anioma was to join the SE, this whole "we are not Igbo" would embarrass the SE It would be a tug of war in a way cause by a few knucleheads. This is why you dont here the SE governments fighting for an Anioma state. They dont want a possible disunity amongst the SE.

Group Wants Igbanke Included In the Proposed Anioma State

06/10/2011 15:42:00 THEWILL

SAN FRANCISCO, October 06, (THEWILL) – The Igbanke National Progressive Alliance, the apex socio-cultural organization of Igbanke town in Oriomwhon Local Government Area of Edo State has urged the National Assembly to include Igbanke in the proposed Anioma State.

“The Igbanke National Progressive Alliance has, after due consultations with the generality of Igbanke indigenes at home and in Diaspora as well as other stakeholders, upheld the age-long choice and agitation for Igbanke to be included in the proposed Anioma State that will be carved out of Delta State. This can be actualized if the people are simply included in closer Ika Local Government umbrella where we rightly belong. The present situation in which our people have been unduly separated from the rest of their Ika kith and kin was borne out of the wish to satisfy the desire and selfish interest of those who sought to increase the kingdom they survey. The dumping of our town, Igbanke in Edo State is an age-long oversight that has brought nothing but neglect, untold attendant socio-political and economic hardship and the feeling that we are outcasts or outsiders, having been treated as such. Now is the time to correct this anomaly that we have been subjected to over the past two decades,” the group stated in a email statement Wednesday.

“We welcome with rapturous joy the determined resolution and efforts of the current National Assembly of Nigeria to create more states in the country……. and believe that the National Assembly and others who believe in the creation of more states in the country as a way of bringing development closer to the people, are on the right track as the course of action will correct the imbalance in which some ethnic groups have existed only in names, being dominated by others in the nation. The exercise should also offer the existing geo-political zones of the country equality and fairness with the accompanying developmental values for the nation,” it added.

The group in the statement signed by Eric Uwagbai, Executive Member; Godday Oyibo, Executive Member; Gloria Eluebo Adagbon, Convener, Igbanke National Progressive Alliance and General Secretary, Umu Anioma Worldwide, gave the following reasons why Igbanke should be aligned with the proposed Anioma State:

“(i) Igbanke is an autonomous community with villages, each with sovereign traditional ruler called Eze’ that are not answerable to any monarch in authority whether in Edo or elsewhere.

(ii) Igbanke people are of Ika stock thickly concentrated in the North West of Delta State, linguistically sharing border in the west with the Edo speakers, Ishan speakers in the North, in the East with the Aniocha language speakers and in the south with the Ukwuani speakers. Historically, Igbanke is believed to have been founded by Agbor, Mbiri and Ishan migrant farmers
(iii) Igbanke is closer to Agbor, Mbiri, Owa and Abavo than it is to Benin City.

(iv) Igbanke has a long history of ancestral relationship with Agbor than Benin City which we have continued to maintain till date.

(v) In recent times, our people have had to rely on facilities put in place in neighbouring Agbor community by the Delta State Government such as hospitals, banks, petrol stations, state ministries and government parastatals so that the Delta State Government is now the surrogate cater-taker for Igbanke and Ekpon communities. The situation has always been that if our people have a choice to make in running to Benin or Agbor, they will surely prefer to, and gladly too, Agbor for linguistic reasons.

(vi) Igbanke has never been a tenant or vassal community of Benin or any other community in history not even in this century.

Our view is still that states should be created along the lines of ethnic nationalities with each group kept together as intact as possible. It is unfortunate that a major group is still claiming to own a minority group in these present times but collectively, the message from our people is that ENOUGH IS ENOUGH. We cannot all be slaves to another distant ethnic group in an independent nation like Nigeria where unlimited equality is guaranteed as enshrined in the constitution. We warn that anything short of our placement in the proposed Anioma State where we rightly belong will be resisted by the good people of Igbanke no matter the threat of invocation of curses on anyone or activities of sell-out minority of Igbanke chiefs with infinite chieftaincy titles from foreign lands. A boundary adjustment that would move us to Ika in Delta State, where we rightly belong, is the only other alternative we are prepared to accept.

In response to the rumours making the mills in Edo State, let us put on record that while still part of Edo State, the people of Igbanke will not accept anything short of her own Local Government Area with its Headquarters at Igbanke. We have population, we have the resources and we have the economic centre to run our Local Government Area effectively. We will resist any attempt by anyone giving us a Greek gift of an Igbanke Local government area with headquarters at Oronigbe. Igbanke is part and parcel of Nigeria; we are Nigerians and we are no longer prepared to tolerate any nonsense from anyone, whether from the state government, any traditional ruler, or the ‘sell-out’ elites and selfish Igbanke politicians.
We call on the National Assembly to expedite action on the commencement of the constitutional amendment process that will support the creation of more states and boundary adjustments in the country, which will in turn assure us of speedy exit from Edo State. Anything short of this will continue to make certain, our unnatural confinement in the hands of our oppressors. The earlier we are constitutionally relocated to the Anioma area, the better for our people.

Our people have been an integral part of the Anioma nation and are actively participating, in official capacities, in Anioma organizations and Associations; this will send the signal of seriousness on our part to pessimists and all the doubting Thomas about our intentions to fight for our right. We have the full backing of Anioma people.”

Elechi condemns Abia govt over sack of non-natives

From GODDY OSUJI, Abakaliki

Friday October 07, 2011

Disengagement of non-natives from Abia State Civil Service, by the Abia State Government has been described as a move capable of creating disunity amongst Ndigbo . This was the view of Governor Martin Elechi, who said his government was yet to be communicated officially on such proposition, adding that he would at this stage consider it as mere rumour, except proven otherwise in due course.

The governor, who spoke through the Commissioner for Information and State Orientation, Mr. Chike Onwe stated that the issue was still based on rumours, but, however, explained that if implemented, would not only threaten the corporate existence of Ndigbo but also, the wellbeing of Nigerians.

“Disengaging people from service on account of place of origin is backward thinking. But as I said, it is still on the plains of rumour and we don’t react to rumours but to substance. “For now, it is not true, until it is true, the issue will be addressed. I think Ndigbo is a united people and we shall not allow anything to disintegrate this unity but I think it will be unfortunate if such a thing happens it has not happened, it is still on the plains of rumours and until it is made real we will not take any official stand or action”

He stressed the state government would not be part and parcel of any process that would cause disaffection among citizens because of issue bordering on indigenization. He added that non-indigenes in the state were gainfully occupying sensitive position in the state, even among the state executive council members.

“Since we talking about true federalism and we cannot achieve such by being sectional or calling some indigenes and some others non-natives. So for us to achieve true federalism, we must get people to feel at home wherever they are. We are looking at a situation where an individual from Kaduna comes to Ebonyi State and stand for any election and the man from Ebonyi goes to Lagos stands election get elected and serve his term. That’s where we are aspiring to.

“The position of Abia State Government is yet to be made available to the Ebonyi State Government but as I said, it is still on the plains of rumour but if that turns out to be true, the matter will be looked at collectively by the state executive council.

Good. The shyt has finally hit the fan. Now this naive action by T. Orji has gone outside of the SE. If Orji was smart, he would have understood that Abia is in bad condition so more people are leaving than coming in, especially since the surrounding states and also non-surrounding state are in much much better condition than Abia. With this being said, if(when) the other governors follow suit, he and Abia will be hit worst of all. In fact, as far as the Igbo-speaking states are concerned, I can suspect that alot of the non-indigene civil servants would leave Abia, being that their states are in better condition, but those spot in their states are bring held by Abians. When those states retaliate and send Abians packing, those civil servants sent out by the Abia goverment would gladly go back to their homesome, progressive, and clean states as opposed to Abia.

If Abians were smart, they'd use this action as a way over impeaching T. Orji. Now that it has grabbed the eyes of a non-SE region, the more ammo for them. I hope they are smart.

Making it tribal will put more pressure on Orji to have a rethink, especially since the SE governors are known to hold meetings regularly with each other. Since the election though, im not sure if they have had another yet.
