Politics › Re: Why Is Electricity Generation In Nigeria Rocket Science by CodeTemplar: 10:57am On Jul 08, 2023 |
nairalanda1: Not quite.
In 2019, it cost N53 to produce one kwh of power (Moghalu), N83 (pwc) and power cost N20-30
Natrually, there were losses as a result.
Then about 30-40% of customers do not pay for power they consume as at 2019 (PwC).
All that adds up to issues with liqudity.
PWC has a good paper on the issue...read it here.
Nigerian political leaders love setting prices low...it is a cheap way to win votes., and stay in power. ...and who measures the unmetred power if not figures cooked by crooked discos who prefer estimation of bills. |

Mjshexy: Big waste of resources, if they had built factories or industries across the geopolitical zones in Nigeria, thereby engaging many of our youths and reducing this huge unemployment state that is a waiting time bomb, Nigerians would have appreciated it better than this nonsense waste of money (Loan) they have engaged in thank you. If power plants were built around industrial estates that are secured specifically, it will be easy to sell cheap power to producers of basic commodities and not subsidizing consumption.of electricity for leisurely purposes that don't grow GDP in any way. |

Do we have one within that connects Nigeria economic hubs? I don't think so ..it's this one leading to NIGER republic that's a priority It's well so they can bring in fuel from Niger and sneak in Hausa speaking islamists. |
Politics › Re: Why Is Electricity Generation In Nigeria Rocket Science by CodeTemplar: 10:50am On Jul 08, 2023 |
nairalanda1: Because they have to make money, especially since from 2017-19, their prices were frozen and they were not allowed to increase prices, and also, because many of them owe debts to the point they have been taken over by the banks.
And they would have raised prices if not for the fact that the government is still setting their prices/they are not fully free to raise prices.
It's the same reason why other people like your local trader and bus driver raise prices. Cost of things go up.It's not nice, but there it is. The prices NERC is setting aren't harsh in anyways. They reflect cost of production to a large extent and I endorse that because the moment NERC isn't there to regulate excesses, the discos will gladly choke Nigerians with extortion. If they cannot make prepaid metres readily and cheaply available like telcos did, let them gladly go burst and endure hypertension if they have to. They enjoy estimated billing because it gives them leverage to make claims and collect money for power that was never generated, talk less of being delivered to customers. |

Politics › Re: Why Is Electricity Generation In Nigeria Rocket Science by CodeTemplar: 10:38am On Jul 08, 2023 |
nairalanda1: Well, you want the truth, or the false story?
Truth: Government has been setting prices for electricity below the production cost to help the poor. Also, a significant percentage of electricity consumers do not pay for the power they consume.
The result, the sector cannot make a profit, and thus there is no money to fix things well.
This happened when there was NEPA, and when there was PHCN and now DISCOS and GENCOS.
(This 2018/9 paper by PwC gives the real koko) If this your story is true, then why have the discos been steadily increasing the prices and only put that of second half of the year on hold due to outcry of too many increases in utilities? You are not a smart liar. |

nairalanda1: Smuggling is a phenonenom that happens in all countries with explicit subsides on petrol like Nigeria.
Libya sells fuel at N14, and they can afford it, with a populaiton of 7 million and production of 1.7 m barrels per day. But that means that smuggling happens massively...to the point they are using air strikes to stop smuggler.
Yeah corrupt politicans and NNPC are part of the problem because subsidy=free government money-=corruption In a counttry where anti corruption agent hardly catch anything outside YahooBoys, using air strike would have made sense than removing subsidy. |

grandstar: He who wears the shoe knows where it pinches. Miles Kyari isn't screaming the house down for the subsidy to go as it was insane.
Did you know that it was cheaper to buy petrol than you buy crude oil? That was how damned cheap it worse.
One does not need to know the exact volume to know how much the government saved or made now that its gone. Government can calculate what came into it after the subsidy was removed.
You are pro-subsidy, hence emotions dominate and not rationality.
Even if it did not cost a dime to provide the subsidy, it should still go.
The biggest damage it did was that it prevents private investment into refining. No bank will lend you $2b to build a 100,000bpd refinery where government fixes the price.None!
The only reason why Dangote and Bua were able to construct refineries was that they could leverage their immensely profitable and enormous cement business as collateral to secure loans.
Had the subsidies been removed since the 1990s,by now the country would be refining at least 2mbpd of crude oil. It would also have massive fertilizer and petrochemical industries. Power generation would probably hover around 50,000 Mw. Nigeria would be the defacto energy hub of Africa. halfbaked analysis as usual. Subsidy cannot kill investment. Was there any promise to Dangote before he built Africa's largest refinery for $20B? The crooked way you reversed order and linked increase in refining capacity to subsidy removal is classic of all your monikers. It was a matter of govt choosing to buy his finished product or from India depending on which is cheaper, faster and then subsidizing it to Nigerians via marketers. You suck at economic analysis even more than I initially realized. Stick to investment and corporate affairs news. |
