While the demonstration of craze continues, here a waring from a Nigerian politician about food scarcity. “Instead of talking about cabinet, subsidy, and the economy, the government should consider food security because with the rate we are going, in the next three months, we are definitely going to have problems in Nigeria, especially in the North-West.
“The bandits have refused to allow farmers to cultivate their crops. This is a very dangerous situation, not only because the bandits are killing people but also because the food scarcity is going to be too serious in the next few months, especially in the North West and North East. So, we want the government to wake up and do something about it.
“Also, with the way education is going, in the next 50 years, we are going to be very backward in education because most of the primary schools in the North have been closed because of banditry. There are no primary schools, no secondary schools and this is a serious disaster. So, we cannot sit down and watch; something must be done right before it gets worse.
“The government should fight security, especially food insecurity, in the country because it’s a serious matter. Whatever the government is going to do, let the issue of food security be top priority.” Source = LIB |

Oyelakin225: #5,000 is too small to cushion the effect of fuel subsidy. #5,000 for six months amount to meagre #30,000. What the Bleep can #30,000 do? that's why I favour tackling issues from root. If the govt focuses on attending public issues diligently as they ought to, will bandits go scot free and be kidnapping producers of what money is meant to buy? All what Tinubu is after is how to redirect money that's fast loosing value instead of ramping up the value of the money with production thus killing two birds with one stone. Production will create jobs, earn us forex because when competitions drives down prices by supply exceeding demand, export becomes feasible and forex is earned. It will also destroy lack. The govt instead leaves taxpayers and productive people at the hands of kidnappers, bandits and thugs. No cheap power. No good storage. They just want to tax the people then impress the people with their own wealth. |

grandstar: The best palliative for the poor is to lift the protectionist walls against the import of rice, poultry and second hand clothing..
Place a 20% importduty on them. This will not only bring down the price of food, but stem muggling of them into the country, anf raise 100s if billions of Naira for the government from mport duty.
Yes, it would hit poultry owners and rice farmers hard but creative destruction will eventually do its work. And again, the gain will be far greater than the loss you don't know what you talking. Lifting protectionist walls to import won't make bandits leave farmers alone to keep their prices competitive internationally. It won't make power stable. It won't stop agbero from inflating final good prices when they extort transporters of goods and humans. Your halfbaked economic suggestions don't take into account the failings of the leaders to put thing in place. You so much believe I'm chess-like moves of soft policies making. A bandit who can tax and levy a rice farmer will equally tax and levy a corn or cocoa farmer successfully. Having comparative advantage in certain good production doesn't mean if you allow agbero and task forces extort transportets of those goods, it will get to Intl market at competitive rates. What you have in your head are cataclysmic fantasies and not realistic solution. |

Nigeria is way too unready and corrupt to manage subsidy,i do travel cross borders by road and i have seen smuggling. this country will not prosecute these powerful kingpins they control the police. grandstar: It is a bare faced lie that transport costs have tripled. In some cases in Lagos, it remained the same. Where there were increases, it ranged from 33% to 100% if it was mass public transport like mini-buses to huge buses like the Lag buses.
This man has the Peter Obi trait of inaccurate data.
Yes, the subsidy removal has been painful, but truth the truth be said, it was necessary.
It was no longer affordable in the first place. This year, government was expected to use 73.5% of government revenue to service debt. Money for fuel subsidy would be borrowed, swelling the debt and the servicing cost further. For Buhari, a known leftist, welfarist and populist to sign the Petroleum Industry Act into law which formally endorsed the subsidy removal speaks volumes. He was also a well known subsidy denialist.
The savings already gained are substantial. It was estimated the amount saved from the fuel subsidy in a month was 400bn. With the Naira now floated, the savings would be more. This money saved now will be split 50/50 between the federal and state governments (we all know that the governors control the local governments allocations).
However, the greatest benefit from the subsidy removal would be that it will lead to a refinery construction boom. Investors were pushed away from constructing refineries because of the subsidies. No bank would lend you $2b to build a 100,000bpd refinery when the end product is subsidized making it unprofitable and unpredictable.
Dangote and Bua were able to borrow funds because they had collateral from their extremely profitable cement businesses to use as collateral.
A refinery boom would create lots of job. It is estimated that Dangote alone would create about 50,000 jobs. The beauty of these jobs will be that they would be high paying jobs with full benefits. They would need at least 8,000 engineers. What of the multiplier effects? This also would be huge.
His is a 650,000bpd refinery. With a plan by 2030 for the nation to have 2mbpd refining capacity by Tinubu, this would create 2-300,000 jobs. you used Lagos as you benchmark. In Abuja and around, of a truth it has tripled. No exaggerations. |

helinues: Firstly, several subsidies have been removed meaning all those wasted money can be injected into the economy which government will get returns in form of taxation
Secondly, the diesel, petrol and food you are talking about are things we shouldn't had been been importing but instead exporting.
If Nigeria have a functional refineries, we won't be wasting money transporting the unrefined fuel to abroad to be refined.
Which part of food do we import that we can produce? Why should still be importing fish, Turkey, Chicken from abroad when we have the man power to start the production in Nigeria. subsidy is not and was never a waste. Waste is when you use 120 car convoy or the wife of the assistant commissioner in one mushroom state uses convoy of four cars and security to go fix her nails and get her hair done. |
