I guess it is part of the sharia influence. This is worse than private schools with strict rules. They are taking the constitutional rights of all students away irrespective or their religion whereas private schools do theirs based on agreed scriptural interpretation both the school and student share in common. |

obi58: Do the math bro, using your facts, 11b divided by 400k students is 27500 per student. Where then is the 300k subsidy? Now apart from these subventions, schools still generate funds from sundry fees including but not limited to tuition so Bro don't justify the unjustifiable.
Also you were talking about subsidy for amongst other things labs..... For real.... LABS Which labs are equipped?
You mentioned salaries..... Are salaries paid from subventions?
Power: How many institutions actually pay their utility bills?
How many hostels are in decent habitable shape and sanitary condition?
Bro get your head out your ass Where did u see 400k in my post? bold it please. |

I asked you a simple question. What exactly is being subsidized? Is it the cost of books which are not provided or the overcrowded classrooms and filthy hostels or the ramshackle libraries or the decrepit laboratories?
What exactly is being subsidized?
If you have a class of 100 paying school fees of 100k each that is 10million naira per class in tuition alone! What other subsidy is being sought for? Everything that goes onto the education they provide. power, water, labs, salaries, structures etc. stop the excuses. |

Unilag has 40,000 student and that gives us another means of estimating the average cost of educating a student yearly. These are easily verifiable facts so stop saying they are mere funding campaign strategy. |
Education › Re: LAUTECH Increases School Fees To N300,000 From N120k by CodeTemplar: 11:00pm On Jul 21, 2018 |
obi58: Whoever told you govt provides 300k subsidy is lying to you sir. Subsidize what exactly? Is it the overcrowded classrooms? Or perhaps the cost of handouts? Or the expired lab equipment? Or the ancient and torn books in the library?
We should be looking at enforcing standards in our institutions to ensure academic excellence and hard work whilst dealing decisively with exam malpractices, sorting/bribes, sex for marks, sale of handouts and all those unwholesome practices currently blighting our educational system. There is need for an urgent overhaul of our educational curriculum to reflect the economic realities of the working environment and equip our students with the necessary skills and competencies required.
Also there is urgent need for testing of the so called lecturers with view to weeding out the square pegs akin to what elrufai did in Kaduna. I first heard it from Okebukola's mouth around 2006. Then just last year Unilags VC repeated same and hinted that unilag needs about N4.8m to properly educate a student but is getting only 300k plus. I can search out the link now. |

obi58: Yeah right..... You're comparing yourself to schools in first world economics where indigenes pay less fees than international students and there are still a plethora of grants and student loans to choose from in spite of their minimum wage. You won't compare yourself to what fees are charged for quality tertiary education in nearby African countries like Ghana and Kenya.
Instead of shifting the burden of funding to the overburdened parents given the economic situation government should be held accountable for improving the standard and quality of education at all levels.
What exactly can we define to be quality education?
How much of the national budget relative to what is obtainable worldwide is allocated to Education and how much of that budget is actually utilised for the intended purpose?
How effective is the oversight function of the Legislature in ensuring effective use of allocated funds to the sector?
How many of these universities can even account for the alleged insufficient subventions they receive from government? How many of these institutions can provide verifiable proof of how school fees are utilised in the administration of the the school?
How many universities do you know that despite having professors in the faculties of Bus. As and Accounting are able to provide audited statements of account on yearly basis?
What percentage of corporate tax is allocated to Education and how many corporate organizations sponsor educational facilities as part of their CSR?
Are these things not doable? Why must the students bear the brunt of the inaction and inefficiency of these stakeholders in the discharge of their duties to what ensuring qualitative education is made a reality in our educational institutions? Are you aware govt spends over N300, 000 to subsidize most students yearly? UI and UniLag are good examples. These student we love to tag as brilliant some aren't as brilliant as we paint them Some paid 200k bribe in order to avoid going to expensive private unis and to enjoy govt subsidy. At the end of the day they grad and decide they don't want to work. The systems loses because we end up subsidizing unmotivated minds. In other nations the strategy is to help people get loans or provide scholarship to entice the most brilliant minds. Haven't u heard of foreign lecturers who give scholarship to their students? You need exposure sir. Nigeria can't keep subsidizing peoples ego and certificate acquisition drive. |

In other nations there is are scholarship schemes to help the brilliant minds get educated and the is are loans to help willing aspirants get educated unlike Nigeria where people enjoy subsidized education to the tune of millions and still don't want to work after graduation. In Nigeria some govt schools expend as high as N500,000 per student per year in some science departments and these guys are absolute free to go into yahoo and prostitution after graduation. hustla: This is POVERTY MENTALITY Nigerians love and think you have to suffer head before you get anything in life
I went to this same CU and there has been only 1 first class graduate from the Department of Mass Communication till date (I'm not sure that has changed)
How can u easily have a first class in public universities when
-Cultists will chase you up and down -No conducive environment, hostels look like where they rear Pigs -Classes are meh, 200 students in a hall that's supposed to accommodate 90 students -Lecturers are interested in sleeping with students or selling textbooks. Some don't even Come to class - You can not walk up to your HOD /VC to have a discussion - Lecturers see themselves as God - Lecturers use the same outdated material year in year out
If you have ever left Naija, you'll see how real education is supposed to look like and you'll see how far Covenant University has Come.
During My IT while I was in 200 Level, I was assigned to Hnd Polytechnic students to help in correcting their English before it goes on air (news articles).. Those students made me thank my stars for the school I went to.
Quote me if I have lied anywhere in my Reply The bold is the reason why I think some student should have better chance in public units. If a lecturer uses old materials to lecture you then that makes the workload predictable and easier to study in advance. In CU if a software for let's say architectural drawing become the industry standard today they speedily adopt it and that makes the course works more unpredictable to students. The don't forget the extra minimum of 16 units of TMC and EDS you must take. EDS practicals alone and TMC physical aspect should bring that value to 35 units or two semester equivalent in most public schools dept. It also applies to examination questions. Add to this the fact that practicals are unavoidable and the fact cheating is harder in examinations. You cannot suppress excellence with crowd mentality forever. |

I am only of the opinion that, you can never compare yourself with someone who goes through the rigours of school in a public University and still excels, albeit with a 2:1. Dare me and take up a session over here, I'm sure you'd end up dropping out. Listen to the voice of logic ! What folks like u don't understand is that there are many people who left the public system to Covenant and didn't improve much. No many of them changed their class of result or grade and I am sure the few who improved did because of repetition of some course work. |
Education › Re: Covenant University Graduates 238 First Class Honours Students by CodeTemplar: 6:09pm On Jul 21, 2018 |
Allstrasse: Sadly, backwardness of the contemporary Nigerian graduate is captured in many of the posts here.
A most disappointing debacle. That some people actually have the temerity to suggest that these excellent students would do lesser in the seedy, demotivated and puerile environments that our public universities have become is really sad. With the benefit of having been on graduate recruitment panels I make bold to state here and unequivocally so that the graduates of Covenant University are indeed what they are; Eagles and can only soar higher.
I have had the singular privilege of employing an Industrial Chemistry graduate of this institution who spent just one year with our client before leaving for further studies in Sweden and I can testify till today that the man is still nostalgic about the experience......and she only had a 2.2.
I may also add that some years back, we had a brief from one the major banks in this country to recruit entry level graduates. Apart from the official correspondence from the HR department I still have a private email sent to me by the MD of that bank requesting that we should employ ALL the applicants from Covenant and Babcock Universities irrespective of their disciplines and grade of pass.
Truth be said, some of the private universities have brought about a paradigm shift. As it stands now, evidences abound that the standard bearers in tertiary education are going to be the private universities. It shouldn't come as a surprise though as private capital and resources has already redefined the standards in secondary education.
By the way, is there any Nairalander here who has his children in a public primary or post primary school by choice? Very true words. Most people attack Covenant Uni grads out of insecurity and not because of they are superior to CU grads. I like that part of a cu pass holder being given a preference to people with better result from public schools. |
