Thanks for the analysis Boss, are you still in LKJ? EMMAACHILE: How did you arrive at 20 tonnes? Using concentrate like KBC 10 and Hendrix, it will look like this
3000 broilers will consume averagely in 6/7 weeks 1kg starter each 1.5kg grower 1.5 kg finisher
Starter per 1000 broiler feed will be 0-17 days KBC 10 will be 375kg, maize 1800kg and soyabean meal will be 825kg for starter
17-37 days KBC 10 will be 450kg, maize 2925kg and soyabean meal 1125kg for grower
37- 49 days (averagely) KBC 10 will be 360kg, maize 3120kg and soyabean meal 1020kg for finisher
Total estimate should look like this 3000 broilers averagely for 6/7 weeks KBC 1,200kg Maize 7,800kg Soya meal or full fat 3,000kg Target weight: 2.6kg Fcr=12,000/7,800= 1.53
Or 4000 broilers KBC 1,600kg Maize 10,400kg Soya meal or full fat 4,000kg Target weight: 2.6kg Fcr=16,000/10,400= 1.53
If he is going to raise for more weeks for 3000 broilers, then the 10 tonne maize will likely be exhausted in 8 weeks. |

Boss I have been waiting to read your opinion on this EMMAACHILE: You will need approximately 3000kg soybeans full fat or meal or equivalent to go with it. If using concentrate, approximatel 1500kg bag or as the formula demands
Approximately if compounded should get about 15 tonnes of feed to raise about 3000-3500 broilers for 7-8 weeks maximum. |

Thanks for the input, more ideas are needed from experienced farmers oluwasemipe: 100bags of 100kg of maize will be 20,000kg of maize which will give you 20tonnes,when you compound it and add other ingredients to it the maize e.g soyabean, wheatoffal in order to convert it into feed you will have 800 bags feeds of 25kg each. The 800bags of feed will conveniently takecare of broilers from day old to 6weeks. Regards. For your consultancy you can call 08025452938 |

Sorry about the mess, next time when it comes to spraying of farm, no matter how busy I am I supervised it so as to avoid stories that touch the heart, because I have learnt lessons from a senior colleague who experience the mess baobab1: Friends I have been very busy at work and in the farm hence my inability to update the thread for some days. K
Last week and up till now we were battling with weeds as a result of controllable error we made at the beginning.
My first farm hand Mr. L did me a lot of injustice, coupled with the fact that the farm manager did not do a thorough job.
Mr. L was introduced to me because he helped our association to plant Kenaf last year. He came in to my farm to help us plant our products, castor, cowpea and kenaf. He was brought in because of his expertise in planting kenaf.
We commenced planting with cowpea. One hectare of cowpea contains 126000 stands if precision planting is engaged with one seed per hole. I communicated my expectation to Mr. L and he promised to give me result. I asked him to plant one seed per hole at specified spacing. He started planting with 3 other guys and I left them in the farm, going to my office. On my way I thought within myself how can this guys achieve result with the high plant population unlike castor that contains like 18000 plant population per hecyare. I was skeptical but we had to forge on as I couldn't see an alternative at that moment and we were bent on planting.
The following day before going to work I went to the farm again. This time the farm manager was around. I asked my guys, how many seeds do you plant per hole and hope you adhered strictly to my instruction? Mr. L and his team confirmed my fears, they had been planting 2 to 4 seeds per hole. The guy even asked my farm manager that right from generations past seeds have been planted in multiples to guarantee germination. My farm Manger confirmed his words but told him to follow intrusions as given by the owner of the farm. The guy said if they plant 1 seed per hole the entire farm will be full of cowpea.i told them not to worry that if my intrusions were followed strictly I know the expected outcome and told them that maximum seed per hole where mistakes happen should not be more than 2 seeds. Friends, when plants sprouted, the cowpea farm was not what I planned for. There were places where we had 8 seeds, some 10seeds just because they needed the seeds to finish as soon as possible. I did not study psychology but I know a little about how the mind of man works. I challenged Mr. L he pleaded but said it should be errors from his colleagues. Thus we lost plant population. The second cowpea farm was better in terms of seeds per hole but they missed it badly in terms of spacing. 20kg seeds that was supposed to be planted on 1hectare was planted on almost 2 hectares. The cost of planting was also very high. I thank God we didn't plant Kenaf because if they couldn't plant beans successfully how would they have planted Kenaf that is supposed to be 200,000 stands per hectare. It would have been a great mess. Mr. L opted to help spray my preemergence herbicide to help in weed control. He charged N3000 per hectare which I agreed to pay. I told my farm manager to stay with the guys, ensure they mix chemicals in his presence in a drum before he leaves them to work. I left the farm shortly after because they intended to spray in the afternoon after planting. Guys, you wouldn't beleive that my farm manager left the farm less than 30mins aft er me. What happened to my chemicals I do not know but we are spending money all over again because weeds kept growing almost at the same rate with the crops. At the hindsight now, there are various planting machines I could have used to achieve effective plant population and at least 85% efficiency and more than 70% reduction in labour cost. Now I realized that i should have asked the existing farmers in the village the preemergence herbicide that is effective for weed control in such community and I should have personally supervised when chemicals were mixed. I should also have asked how land preparation is done in the community. Most of the mistakes above are learning points and I don't see them happening again in my future endeavours. |

Around Iseyin ,getting land is a bit difficult, because, spend about 3 months inspecting various land as I have reasons for choosing the type of land, I wanted land that have no trees, which is more expensive, then distance from the town and distance from tarred road, all is what is put into consideration when I bought mine at the rate of #70k/acre, each, some are sold for 50k, some even 40k, but very far from the town, and some there are no nearby farming community, all this is what I consider before purchasing Plow: Where do you intend to get the acres and at what rate? Looking for cheap land to buy for farming. Thanks |
Agriculture › Re: The Diary Of A First Time Farmer by confluence: 7:48am On Nov 02, 2018 |
Regarding premergence, chemicals, what I learnt from a senior farmer, beforehand who suffer similar problem, he farm about 100 acres of maize regularly, he said in a particular year his boys stole his chemicals to use in their own farm, and he assume all was well only to discover that they spray only ordinary water because he was not there , when I heard this in my own case I took responsibility to be adding the chemicals into the spray tanks all through out, and the results was amazing, I would show you some pictures later , with this I have made up my mind to do the mixing of chemicals even if am doing 50 acres, because of the tedious nature of farming, am procuring some pumps from China as as to motorized the spray pump, you can check on Google about how to motorized your spray pump, so that the work will be faster baobab1: The war against weed is ongoing and we are winning gradually by God's grace. Meanwhile we fell into this problem because my labour did not apply preemergence herbicide appropriately. Really, I suspect the guy stole my chemicals.
I will share my experience with labour later in the day, but at the moment let me proceed to the farm and see how far we have gone weeding.

Kudos to you, it is not an easy task, farming is capital intensive, I embark on a similar journey too as a new farmer, all what you wrote there is true, just like someone advice you to minimize human interaction in the farming setup,I paid for 15 acres of land around iseyin, looking at cash at hand, I was able to plough, 7 acres currently with late season maize and cassava,my long term goal is to plant cashew on the land as I intend to acquire 20 acres each year for the next 5 years, got the land late too around July this year so I did not want the remaining farming season to be a waste of time, so I planted the maize and cassava, God really favor me with rain because I planted very late around 13th of august baobab1: YOU ARE DEAD WITHOUT MONEY:
Farming is really capital intensive, you wouldn't know until you go into practical farming.
Before we started I met with some friends who showed interest. We planned to come together and start with 10 to 20 hectares of crops and gradually increase. We planned to start this much to minimize cost and maximize profit. For instance, we could have hired a farm manager on a 10hectares and 1 or 2 permanent staff profitabely.
Unfortunately, when it was time for these friends to drop money, they started giving various excuses. Some even stopped picking my calls. These were people whose enthusiasm was very high before we started. I managed to get a little support from 2 people and built on that.
My plan was to have partners that we would swim or sink together but what I was able to get were people who would rather invest and take profit. Since I am the vision carrier I kept moving on.
My good friends, before you start your farming activities please sought out your finances. If you have money to do a plot of corn please go ahead rather than building your dreams on the promises of financial support from friends and families.
You need money to practise farming. When you make a little mistake somewhere you will require tons of money to salvage your crop or you loose everything. At that point if money is not available you will watch as your hope fizzle away. For instance I spent a lot of money on preemergence herbicides but in spite of that we had to do manual weeding which was not planned for, I never knew until now that manual labour could erode your pocket so deep.
We are battling with weeds now. We have salvaged about 1.5 hectares of cowpea that have started flowering. The available 2 guys working at the face could not cope with the pace at which weed is growing so yesterday I gave a directive to get more hands that can do daily job and get paid.
We are moving forward and winning the war against weed. But if we couldn't get a little more money at this point I tell you weed would have sent us out of farm
Labour can make your job unprofitable. Tomorrow you will see how my trusted labour messed up and the outcome began to show when plants germinated |

Investment › Re: Treasury Bills In Nigeria by confluence: 8:25pm On Oct 10, 2018 |
The information youprovided is valid, regarding some investment house, like investment one, which current rate on VGIF. Is currently 15.67%, I do it and I take, my interest at the end of the tenure, I have been running it for 3 straight years now, Acidosis: Sometimes it's good to remind ourselves that TBills isn't the only investment option out there, and the common deposit money banks (e.g. GTB, Stanbic, etc) aren't the only licensed and regulated investment-/banks in the country. There are several investment banks and over 500 microfinance banks offering similar services in Nigeria and some of them even give loans at better interest rates with no bottleneck.
As a matter of fact, TBills isn't even the core business of a deposit money bank like GTB or Stanbic Bank. It is the core duty of Investment centres such as ARM, Mansard, VFD, etc. Many big investors don't do deposit money banks as many of them don't have the time to fill forms in the conventional banks. They go to where they're well respected and given due and quality attention - and that's what many investment centres stand for. Do I need to mention that some of these investment centres pay their staff more than what staffs of conventional banks earn?
If we must criticize, at least let's do it with an open mind. The common belief here is that Stanbic offers the best TBill services; some even hold on to this belief to the extent they don't believe other deposit money banks offer similar or better services.
I was criticized on this thread sometime ago for mentioning my experience with Sterling bank. Today, the same Sterling bank came up with the i-Invest app while the likes of Stanbic and Firstbank are still in existence.
