President Goodluck Jonathan has applauded the attention his administration is giving the Igbo, whom he said, are well represented in his government and are being appointed to positions which no previous administrations ever gave them. The President also said the Igbo had also benefited from many projects completed by his government in the South-East. He said these during this year’s World Igbo Congress Day in Huston, United States of America. The event had held on Saturday, but a copy of the President’s speech at the ceremony was only made available to journalists by the presidential spokesman, Dr. Reuben Abati, on Thursday. President Jonathan, who said his administration’s appointments were based on competence, equity and fairness, noted that he would leave it to “historians” to determine whose administration had done more for the Igbo in terms of federal appointments. The President said, “Distinguished ladies and gentlemen, in pursuit of productivity and excellence, we have appointed competent and capable men and women to positions of high authority and strategic responsibility in all fields of national endeavour. “In our dogged determination to develop our country, the Igbo are well represented and in some of these appointments, the Igbo are having them for the first time. “Some have said that this government has done more in appointments than any other in our history for the Igbo, but that is a matter for the pundits and historians. Let me state that appointments by this administration, across the country, will continue to be based on equity, fairness and competence. “Even when some utilise politics to undermine our commitment to fairness and justice, we will deploy the principle of Federal Character to progressively correct it. No part of Nigeria under my leadership will be shortchanged.” He added that in terms of projects and policies, the Igbo had benefited from his administration’s commitment. Accordingly, the President said his administration had completed many federal roads, which were left in bad state by previous administrations. He said, “Similarly in projects and policies, we have continued to do our best. Throughout the South-East, we inherited federal roads in very poor conditions. “In spite of the highly competitive demand and constraints on funding, we have taken on most of the major roads, realising the impact that their improvement will have on business and life in our country. “The Owerri-Onitsha road, which was under construction at the outset of my administration, has been virtually completed. Three other very important roads, the Enugu-Onitsha expressway, the Enugu-Port Harcourt road and the Nguzu-Edda-Nkporo-Ohafia road which cuts across Ebonyi and Abia States, are steadily progressing. Our hope is that improved budget and Sure-P funding will see quicker action in the months ahead. “The Ohaozara-Ishiagu road and Enugu-Abakaliki road are some of those that have progressed to good standard. Further attention will be focused on the Umuahia-Ikot Ekpene road, which is already being addressed remedially by the Federal Roads Maintenance Agency. http://www.punchng.com/news/ive-given-igbo-positions-theyve-never-had-jonathan/ |
Some 160 people are being medically monitored in Nigeria’s oil-producing hub Port Harcourt after a doctor died from the virus, the local government said on Friday. “As of today, none of them has shown symptoms of any kind. We are in touch with them constantly and they also call us to tell us their condition,” Rivers State health commissioner Sampson Parker told a news conference in the city. The Nigerian government announced on Thursday that the doctor was Nigeria’s sixth person to die from the haemorrhagic fever and the first outside the country’s biggest city, Lagos. Port Harcourt, the capital of Rivers state, is the centre of Nigeria’s oil industry and is home to a number of oil majors, including Anglo-Dutch giant Shell, France’s Total and US firm Chevron. The doctor, Ikyke Samuel Enuemo, fell ill after treating an official from the ECOWAS regional bloc, who travelled to the city after coming into contact with a Liberian-American man who brought the virus into Nigeria and died on July 25. The official slipped through the surveillance net in Lagos. He was brought back to Lagos but found to have recovered from the virus, health minister Onyebuchi Chukwu said. Enuemo’s wife, who gave birth only three months ago, is ill with symptoms of the disease and has been placed in quarantine. She requested to be moved out of Port Harcourt for “emotional reasons” and has been taken to an isolation unit in Lagos for further observation and treatment, Parker told reporters. “She is also a doctor. Her three-month-old baby is alive and well. The result of the test conducted on her (for Ebola) is not yet out,” he added. Six people have died of the disease in Africa’s most populous country. Specialists from the World Health Organization, the United States and Britain have joined experts from the Nigerian government in Rivers State to check the spread of the virus. Rivers state has a quarantine centre at Oduoha, about 25 kilometres (16 miles) east of the city as well as a special isolation ward for Ebola patients at the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital (UPTH). Neither has received any patient, Parker said. A mobile laboratory has arrived in the city while the hotel where the ECOWAS official was treated has been decontaminated, as have the hospital where Enuemo was treated, his house and the morgue at UPTH. |
At least 10 people died in Rivers state on Friday when a boat carrying 35 passengers bound for Port Harcourt capsized and sank, a rescue official and local government spokesman said. “We can confirm that 10 persons died early today when a Port Harcourt-bound passenger boat sank,” National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) co-ordinator Onimode Bandele told AFP. “Rescue efforts are ongoing and the agency is already working with other bodies and security agencies in the rescue efforts.” The chairman of Bonny local government council, Adonye Wilcox, also confirmed the accident, which he said occurred at 7:45 am (0645 GMT). “Information available… indicates that the boat hit an object on the way and sank,” he said. “Local divers have rescued 17 persons, including four members of the National Youth Service Corps, while 10 persons died as a result of the accident”. A search was being conducted for the eight people unaccounted for, Wilcox added. Boat accidents in Nigeria occur frequently and are often caused by overloading, poor vessel maintainance, speeding and poor lighting. |

Patients admitted in the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital, UPTH, have hurriedly left the hospital after they learnt that the corpse of the late Dr. Iyke Samuel Enamua who died from Ebola virus after secretly treating an ECOWAS diplomat, was deposited in the morgue of the hospital. Some concerned staff of the hospital lamented to journalists that the management of the hospital did not warn the mortuary attendants not to accept corpses from outside the hospital before ignorantly allowing the doctor’s corpse to be deposited in the morgue. A visit to UPTH Friday showed that patients have deserted the hospital because of the fear of contracting the Ebola disease. At the entrance gates of the two major hospitals in the state: UPTH and Braithwaite Memorial Hospital, BHM, the management of the hospitals have provided scanning equipment for testing the temperatures of patients before granting them access to the hospital. Governor Chibuike Amaechi in a state broadcast Thursday appealed to the people of the state not to panic as the government had put in place all necessary medical and material equipment to contain the outbreak of Ebola disease. He said the diplomat that the late doctor treated was still alive and that was an indication that all hopes were not lost. Dr. Charles Tobin West chairman of Advisory Committee called for caution and advised that fear kills faster that Ebola itself. In another development, Dr Dan Jumbo, the President of Association of Resident Doctors, UPTH, confirmed that resident doctors were not working in the hospital because the management insisted they had been sacked by the Federal Government; and secondly, the improper depositing of their late colleague in the UPTH morgue poses health hazard to them. |
Safety trials on an Ebola vaccine are being fast-tracked, meaning it could be given to healthy volunteers as early as September, researchers said Thursday. The move was announced by pharmaceuticals giant GlaxoSmithKline, which is jointly developing the vaccine, and Britain-based medical charity Wellcome Trust, which is contributing to a grant for the trials. “A candidate Ebola vaccine could be given to healthy volunteers in the UK, the Gambia and Mali as early as September, as part of a series of safety trials of potential vaccines,” a statement said. “Human trials of this candidate vaccine, being co-developed by the US National Institutes of Health (NIH) and GlaxoSmithKline, are to be accelerated with funding from an international consortium in response to the Ebola epidemic.” A total of 1,552 people have died from the Ebola outbreak which erupted earlier this year in west Africa. |
Nigeria on Thursday said that a doctor had died from Ebola in the southeastern oil city of Port Harcourt in the first case of the deadly virus in the state. Health minister Onyebuchi Chukwu said the medic died on August 22 after treating a patient who had contact with the Liberian-American man who brought the virus to Nigeria, and who died in a Lagos hospital on July 25. “Following the report of this death by the doctor’s widow the next day, the case had been thoroughly investigated and laboratory analysis showed that this doctor died from EVD (Ebola Virus Disease),” he told reporters in the capital Abuja. The latest case brings to six the number of people who have died from the haemorrhagic fever in Nigeria. Fifteen people have now been confirmed to have the disease. On Wednesday, Chukwu had said that the virus was contained because there were no cases outside Lagos, but warned against complacency in fighting the disease. News that a doctor died 435 kilometres (270 miles) away will raise fears about the spread of the virus, just as Nigerians began to think that they had stopped Ebola in its tracks. Port Harcourt, the capital of Rivers state, is the centre of Nigeria’s oil industry and home to a number of oil giants, including Anglo-Dutch giant Shell and US firm Chevron. Chukwu said a patient who had contact with the Liberian-American victim managed to slip through the net and go to Port Harcourt in the last week of July, where he saw the doctor after showing Ebola-like symptoms. “After four days, following a manhunt for him, he returned to Lagos by which time he was found to be without symptoms,” Chukwu told reporters. “This case would have been of no further interest since he had completed the 21 days of surveillance without any other issue but for the fact that the doctor who treated him died last Friday.” Following the doctor’s death, the minister said that several contacts had now been “traced, registered and placed under surveillance”. He did not specify how many. His widow has shown symptoms of the virus and has been placed in isolation pending results of laboratory tests, he added. |
Governor Ibikunle Amosun of Ogun state, southwest, Nigeria has revealed that peace talk is ongoing to resolve the internal crisis rocking the party, All Progressives Congress, (APC). Amosun also declared that the former governor of the state and a chieftain of the party, Chief Olusegun Osoba remain the leader of the party and his leader, warning detractors to stop meddling into their affairs. The governor stated this on Tuesday 26 August in a live broadcast on the state owned radio and television station, OGBC and OGTV while reeling out his programmes in the last three years and three months in office. The programme, tagged: “My Stewardship” was anchored by seasoned journalists led by the General Manager of Ogun State Television, OGTV, Alhaji Ayinde Soaga. According to the governor, “I have said it times without number that the issue between me and my leader, our leader, Chief Olusegun Osoba is an internal issue and I don’t want to discuss it again. When an issue is under resolution, one must be wary of what to say, especially on TV as some mischievous people out there will not be happy with the development. “Some people who are not in our party that we know are our leaders, we accord them the regard, not to talk of Chief Olusegun Osoba, who is a chieftain of our party. He remains our leader and we will forever be loyal to him,” Amosun stated. On the debt profile of the state, the governor revealed that those saying the state owed up to 300 billion naira are mischievous and they are yet to wake up from their slumber. The governor challenged them to come out with fact and figures to counter his claim that the state is not owing up to what they are claim, adding that, the spate of work has caught them unaware. “They are wondering how these works have been done, they don’t believe what they are seeing, because when they were here for eight years they could not achieve what we have achieved in just three years. They have not seen anything yet, this is Ogun state, we can’t just be doing substandard work here as they did during their time, it must be a standard one and nothing except that. “I want to state here tonight, thank God, this is a live programme, everybody is seeing and hearing me, the debt profile of Ogun state as I am speaking will be between 35 and maximum of 40 billion naira. No bank can give you such amount as being peddled around by these people. I am an accountant and I know what I am talking about. At the end of the year, maybe our debt profile may nosedive to something about 11billioin naira. “Let any of the banks come out and debunk all what I have said. We are using only two banks in the state and anybody can go in there to verify what I have just said. There is no truth in all what they are saying that we are owing 300billion naira,” the governor revealed. On the allegation that the governor is planning to impose his candidates on the party ahead of 2015 elections, Amosun assured that all aspirants will be given equal treatment, adding that, they will have a level playing ground in picking would-be candidates for the party. Amosun explained so much on the planned programmes of the administration, urging the good people of the state to be calm and patient as the end will surely justify the means. He expressed dissatisfaction on the way the students of Olabisi Onabanjo University, OOU, Ago Iwoye reacted to the issue of tuition reduction, which led to the closure of the institution. Governor Amosun said the students needs to understand the situation of the government, saying, much has been expended on educational sector than roads in contrary to claims by the people. He revealed that the past administration of Otunba Gbenga Daniel owed almost 1.9 billion naira before it left office, adding that, “In the handing over note, they claimed we are owing N49.7bn, which is approximately N50 billion naira. And as you know, this is my profession, we contracted it out to firms and we were able to see that, they were owing N86 billion naira. “Aside that many issues came up which are now in court. They include their handing over note, among them is the issue of Gateway Holdings. On OOU issue, we have done what is supposed to be done and the students should just take that for now. When the last protest happened, I was not around, I was away in Abuja and I had to rush back home to address the matter. “Security operatives informed that I should not move closer to the boys, but I said no, I drove to them and told them that I will not address them on the road and ordered them to move with me to the stadium. We discussed the matter and I set up an ad hoc committee to look into their demand that the implementation of the reduction must commence from now and now is 2014/2015 as stated because they are in the first semester. After the committee sittings, they led the students to see reasons why their demands could not be possible, out of 11 schools, how could one school be hell bent on what cannot be possible, but instead for them to listen and reason with us, they are planning to cause unrest and to avoid breakdown of laws and order, we ordered that the school be shut. I can’t promise what can never be possible, we cannot reduce the tuition. Just because I want to please an institution, I cannot collapse the institution,” Amosun explained. The governor, however, solicited the support of the good people of the state, promising that better days are ahead for them in the state. |
The Minister of Information, Labaran Maku, on Monday urged politicians to work towards free and fair elections in 2015 by accepting defeat when necessary. Maku made this submission in Abuja at a forum for senior officers of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC). He observed that the level of the electoral process was deteriorating and urged politicians to work towards free and fair elections. The minister said the country was passing through a developmental process that required every security organisations to join the efforts of the government to combat electoral fraud. “Some politicians think that we are preparing for war in 2015; they should stop scaring the masses. “Election is a game where you either loose or win, and no man is indispensable, only Nigeria is indispensable and politicians should imbibe that attitude that the populace either elect you or reject you. “Election is the pillar of any democracy; elections provide the medium for people to select their leaders and the masses should be allowed to exercise their franchise.” He further said Mr President was committed to free and fair elections and that the government was also depending on security agencies to enforce this. “The masses need to be assured that their lives are safe as they come out to exercise their franchise.” The Commandant General of NSCDC, Dr Ade Abolurin, said there was need for peace in the country. Abolurin said that there was need for a credible election come 2015, hence the need for the training. “The NSCDC is making sure that 2015 elections will be very free and fair, we will ensure transparency. This will involve the use of trained dogs and intelligent equipment to enforce,” Abolurin said. He told stakeholders at all levels to carry the message of peace and conflict prevention to ensure development. Pa-Lamin Beyai, the Resident Representative to the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), pledged to support the country towards achieving credible polls. Beyai said UNDP supports electoral growth and sustainable development in Nigeria. “In the last few decades, a number of African countries including Nigeria have witnessed a challenging phenomenon where elections have become so violent. “They have become a security concern rather than a celebration of democracy, there are loss of lives, destruction of properties and all what not. “We, therefore, need to build and consolidate the electoral process,” he said. He added that the training would enable the officers to enhance their past achievements and experiences in ensuring credible elections in Nigeria. “The workshop will empower senior officers to fulfill the efforts of peace officers at their respective commands through enforcing peace and other alternative mechanisms particularly towards free and fair elections. “UNDP will continue to work with all peace initiators in Nigeria including the NSCDC to prevent civil violence both at the national and local levels.” |

The Yobe State Police Command on Wednesday in Damaturu confirmed Tuesday’s bomb attacks in Potiskum. News Agency of Nigeria reports that bombs planted in two mosques had exploded at about 7.30 pm on Tuesday when Muslims in the area were preparing for the evening prayers. The command’s Police Public Relations Officer, Mr Nansak Chewang, told the News Agency of Nigeria the police were however working on the details to know exactly those involved. “We are still working on the details to get the authentic figures of casualties in the bomb attacks in Potiskum,’’ he said. The police did not give if there were casualties in the blasts. A yet-to-be-identified number of residents might have died in the explosions, which were said to have gone off in a “busy area” of Potiskum on Tuesday. Earlier on Monday, suspected Boko Haram members had sacked a military base in the Birni Yadi area before killing no fewer than eight people. The terrorists reportedly blew off a bridge linking Damaturu, the state capital, through Birni Yadi with Borno and Adamawa states. |
It is with joy and gladness that we want to welcome you to this year’s convention, our 62nd Annual Convention with the theme: The Holy Spirit. This theme makes the convention more than any other one the convention of the Holy Spirit Himself. Who is the Holy Spirit? There are number of ways to answer this question. However simply put, the Holy Spirit is a Divine Helper. We have always realized how much we are able to achieve if and when assisted. One can then appreciate what level of success awaits anyone who is helped by the Holy Spirit in person. This year’s convention is therefore, specifically for those who are thirsty for divine help, those who are tired of the state they ‘ve been in, those who know things can be a lot better if only help can come in their direction. The Holy Spirit is a Divine Helper who teaches and bring all things into our remembrance (John 14:26). The reason the Christian life of many believers might have been very uninteresting and dry is because divine illumination which the Holy Spirit produces through His word is largely absent. If only we would open ourselves fully to the Holy Spirit at this convention, help will come our way and we shall go back home rejuvenated and bubbling in joy of the Holy Spirit. Dryness will become a thing of the past. The Holy Spirit is also the Spirit of wisdom, understanding, counsel, might, knowledge and of the fear of the Lord (Isaiah 11:2). These are great and awesome work of grace the Holy Spirit produces in the lives of His people. As we come thirsty and not for a jamboree, it is expected that before the convention is over, many of us will say “I have indeed come to keep an appointment with destiny”. For instance what wisdom and understanding impacted, students who have been having it rough in their academics despite all they put in, it will be their turn to smile. They shall receive help and exam failure will begin to change to stories of exam success. The Holy Spirit as a Divine Helper rekindles hope (Romans 15:13). It is therefore, time for the hopeless to abound again in hope. Because hope makes not ashamed (Romans 5:5), we are trusting God that through this convention, shame will be terminated where found in our lives. The barren shall shall be helped and they shall become fruitful, the sick and the afflicted shall obtain help and shall be healed, help will flow in the direction of the bound and they shall be set free, the forgotten shall be remembered at last, every good thing that might have died in our lives shall come alive again, there shall be uncommon signs and wonders. They shall all be divinely helped. The Holy Spirit empowers as seen in the ministry of our Lord Jesus Christ (Acts 10:38). If by the empowering of the Holy Spirit the Lord Jesus was helped to succeed concerning His mission to the world, we are persuaded that as we come in contact with the Divine Helper through this year’s convention, we can begin to look forward to reaching our goals, crawling ministries will be helped to come alive again, there shall be multiplication of churches (Acts 9:31), power for signs and wonders will be impacted on the thirsty and we will leave with a brand new beginning ready to face the future with rekindled hope. It is for this purpose we would really want to encourage seriousness at this year’s convention. Make up your mind not to miss the visitation of the Holy Spirit and present yourself in every meeting with prayers and expectation. Keep the Camp holy and clean so as not to grieve the Holy Spirit and observe all rules. You will return home with help and counsel that will make you’re a new person You are once more welcome. Pastor E.A Adeboye General Overseer Date: Monday, 4th – Sunday, 10th August 2014 Venue: The Arena, Redemption Camp, KM 46 Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, Mowe Ogun State Nigeria. Ministering: Pastor E.A. Adeboye & other anointed men of God. |
