I don't think that's the motivating factor. The path to employment, settling, and citizenship is clearer and more widely known for a place like Canada. There's also the reality that one minute some nations are welcoming, and the next there's all kinds of problems. Law also favors locals in messed up ways. Despite these problems, people still explore that option, and are happy with their choice (e.g. Ivory Coast). But you can't fault people who are giving everything they have, and want confidence that it will work out, especially if they have kids.

But I do think things are changing due to globalization and better flow of information.

Many of those homes lasted due to building standards, regulation, maintenance, and lots and lots of money.

1. It's cheap.

3. American oyinbos are stúpid. They think these homes are a massive achievement. They never think about the fact that they pay all that money for wood and plastic.
4. You can build these things for like $30,000 and sell for $300,000 (or much more).
5. Safe, affordable neighborhoods with good schools are often full of these homes. Families struggling in cities feel pressured to buy them.

Wherever you go, make sure you really study the language.
