Today's major potential global threat is Islamic Terrorism. Militaries tailor training to meet their very present threats which is what I mean by existential. So my question is what threats does South Africa face now or in the medium term that informs it footing expensive brigade sized drills?

Henry great u dug that out. The NAF website under Air Marshal Abubakar is pretty with info and updates. With every new service chief in the three armed services is varying degrees of media access. What Nigeria's military enjoys head and shoulders above contemporary African militaries is Capacity. Capacity has a bearing on Capabilities. This is evident for all to see.

Press reporting The Nigerian Air Force is resuming training for it's UAV pilots stalled in 2013. CAS chief Abubakar is definitely a God-sent. Previously trained crews have been very effective in Drone ISR and attack operations to decimate BHT. 5 NAF pilots will be trained for the next 3 months in UAV operations. Nigeria already operates missile armed CH-3A drones for Combat and non-combat roles (a first in Africa). The NAF has also manufactured a new drone and resuscitated another. Curious which? We know the Yabhon Smart eye is coming giving Nigeria dominant UAV ISR & lethal capability.

However as u may know the President of Nigeria is privileged with secure phone and vid communication in real time in Aso Rock, Eagle One or anywhere in the world. The Nigerian military also operates a proven and active NEC in war in Africa today that affords the president real time vid in the Situation Room of NAF airstrikes on HVTs, Troop Movements in theater, and or sensitive SBS kill or capture special operations. These are rare capabilities exercised by very few powerful countries.

The 6 DIVISION is being formally activated this is becoming to look like the trappings of a full fledged AMPHIBIOUS DIVISION well done.

Not exactly, Brigade sized marine combat capabilities still rests with 82 division Enugu. The newly activated 6 division Port Harcourt incorporates some amphibious elements more in the special forces role. 6 division is currently operationalising special combat teams each tasked with it's own specific assignments: anti-oil bunkering, anti-kidnapping, armed robbery and violent cult gangs etc. A grip is been put on the delta.

Nigeria is the giant of Africa. Period. The sooner other africans accept this fact however painful it is the sooner africa chats a better future for itself working with Nigeria. This is what Britain did acknowledging America´s leadership after the Suez fall. South Africa is expected to do the same or continue to wane into insignificance in Africa´s geo-political equation. You can deny all you want for national pride and ego but the indices point to that fact whether now or in the future. South Africa rather will find its relevance in a working relationship with Nigeria not outside of it. It is still an important country. On the map Egypt and Algeria may be in Africa but geo-politically speaking its interests does not lie here; they are not arming for Nigeria neither is Nigeria arming for them. They have their bitter histories of internal conflict and conflict with european powers and Israel to make them continuosly be in a state of war for which they generously spend. Nigeria is not at war with any state. If there was an existential external threat it would arm appropriately for that. Nigeria´s military planners today contend with 14 internal threats chief of which is Boko Haram and same time plan for potential conflicts across Africa. It buys what it needs and not what it wants. Nigeria´s military is africa´s most secretive and for good reason. Nigeria´s navy chief will tell you his boys operate some of the most sophisticated assets but won´t give anything away until the shooting starts. Nigeria´s air chief will tell you the F-7s are very good aircraft and makes you wonder but guess what they are up-arming. The Nigerian Air force today can deploy on multiple theaters of war. Senegal on the door-step of Gambia has an airforce but only Nigeria could deploy air combat capability over Gambian airspace many kliometres from its homeland. Air power is not just airframes but actually an organisation that can bring it to bear in combat effectively. Pls dont mention Chad, it has no pilots and no airforce rather a dictators mercenary protection unit which can be sabotaged on the ground by special forces. You want us to believe a lie that the chadians captured land against boko haram? Last we checked It was the Nigerian army that still cleared Dikwa not Chad who was given a beaten and took heavy losses fighting rebels like rebels with little to no armour. Mali? Nigeria alone will be producing 40% of Africa´s GDP in some 20 years. Lagos State alone is about 35 african economies combined. Kudos to the Nigerians here who stood up for the homeland against hate.
