let me give a small info India conducted first nuclear tests in 1974 and i have reasons to believe that she already had <100 nuclear devices made before she conducted the 2nd nuclear tests in 1998.

after 1998 how many she made i don't know but western sources gives figures of around 110-120 devices calculated based on india's stocks of weapons grade plutonium.

however they seem to ignore the fact that India is the 2nd country after US to have tested a nuclear device using reactor grade plutonium (indians r actually happy that it is being ignored ).

reactor grade plutonium based weapons r very hard to make since the chances of producing a fission reaction is very hard unless the effects of impurities r cancelled out by another unknown material, unconventional pit design is adopted etc etc.

India has enough stocks of reactor grade plutonium to manufacture 2000+ nuclear weapons if she desires.

plus india has commissioned a large facility for uranium production for her nuclear submarines which can be diverted to her existing stockpiles of enriched uranium destined for thermonuclear (hydrogen) bombs.

India has covert access to France megajoule facility to test her new designs based on vintage 1998 designs and also she has her own locally developed stimulation programs running on her locally build purpose designed supercomputers .

It will have an appearance of transparency but not transparent. Nigeria does more covertly than overtly. It may surprise you, does Nigeria export lethal light arms to friendly nations?

About nuclear reactors and fissile materials for Hydrogen Bombs and India being the second country outside the US to have reactor grade plutonium material for nuclear weapons, India developed that technology and capacity after taking advantage of technology given it originally by Canada. That model is US based. The US of course only accepted India as a Nuke State after a period of detente.

I'd estimate India possibly has as many as 150 nuclear warheads. I think the Indian PM should know how many exactly. And it can like the US continue to build on reactor grade material from same source without having to redesign or build a completely new program unlike the Russians which experts question have newer and more deadly nuclear weapons capability.

Fact be told these guys continue to upgrade to even more deadlier ICBM payload and delivery. The Russian RS-24 ICBM can re-enter the earth's atmosphere at hypersonic speed with purportedly 10 independent nuclear warheads unlike the US Minuteman 111 with a single warhead but also deadly with hypersonic re-entry. the US does have the Triad option. Which is why their policy around it is Mutually Assured Destruction (MAD).

what! Indian military is not secretive ,

u got to CAG ( comptroller auditor general ) and MOD website ,u will find almost all info, except for those relating to intelligence , strategic assets and classified designated matters.

under RTI (right to information ) act , a citizen can ask the military for info , however the military has the right to refuse and has to provide a viable reason for the refusal. however it can be challenged in court and the court will have the final say in the matter.

only Indian intelligence (civilian) apparatus is secretive and not answerable to anyone except the prime minster

let me put forward my unsolicited personal opinion

Nigeria was under military rule for some years, then Nigerian military was answerable to none and as such military matters was kept out of the purview of the public scrutiny by designating all military matter as classified.

habits r hard to break in any military, so this was being continued as a force of habit but my observation is that with time ie under civilian government rule the Nigerian military has opened up considerably and in future it will be more open, obliviously with the necessary safeguard limits .

note : this is my personal opinion and can be wrong too.

Records In History: Brigadier General Maxwell Mitikishe Khobe is an Infantry and Armored officer of the Nigerian Army and one of Nigeria's finest Officers. He is known for leading combat forces from the front, courage, bravery and calmness in the line of fire. He graduated from the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA), Kaduna as an infantry 2nd Lieutenant. On advice after attending various young officer Infantry courses and exemplary leadership he transferred to the Armoured Corp of the Nigerian Army where he became a Captain. He further attended basic and advanced Armored courses both in the USA and the United Kingdom. He saw roles in Nigeria's inglorious coup history in the 70's and 80's which saw the failure of the Dimka coup and rise to power of an Armored Corp Officer in General Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida. His Unit of Tanks were instrumental in the bloodless palace çoup that overthrew the Supreme Military Government of Major General Muhammadu Buhari in 1985. He was promoted Major and served four tour of duties in the ECOMOG Peace Keeping Operations in Liberia earning a medal on each tour serving under Nigeria's General Martin Luther Agwai who was commander of all ECOMOG forces in Liberia and Sierra Leone. Upon promotion to the rank of Colonel he was deployed again on foreign duties this time to Sierra Leone in 1998 after the overthrow of President Ahmed Tejan Kabbah. ECOMOG was given the mandate to restore the democratic order. Colonel Khobe based in Lungi with Nigerian Forces was given the task and when asked how long it will take said in a matter of days. After series of Strikes on SLA military HQ and Assets by the Nigerian Air Force and Navy, with him leading from the front the Nigerian led ECOMOG Ground Task Force under his command employing mostly Machine Guns and light weapons battled it's way -- defeating regular Sierra Leonean Army soldiers and drug hardened RUF rebels who made a pact with the Junta -- and entered Freetown capturing State House in about seven days. During that Operation he sustained injuries that lodged a bullet in his body. Ahmed Tejan Kabbah was restored to power. Thereafter he was promoted Brigadier General and became Chief of Defence Staff of Sierra Leone a post he held until his death two years later. The official line is he was evacuated to Lagos after falling ill with swelling to the brain but most likely he suffered complications during a process to remove the bullet lodged in his chest. He died in Lagos. The Rukuba Cantonment in Jos, Plateau State has been renamed after him.

There is only one dominant Naval Power in the Gulf of Guinea. And Nigeria will ensure it stays that way on the Seas and in the Air.

Fact is there is still insecurity there but it has been drastically reduced in the last quarter. Besides the Hard Assets coming in can hardly be justified as relevant for riverine operations or just piracy in high seas. However Jin115 those surface and sub ships are coming in.

The budget is under inflated so that people won't make noise. That budget was signed when Nigeria was in recession. How will you explain to people that you know what you are doing?

The same budget claimed airmen's accommodation in Shasha, Sokoto, Minna, Warri, Portharcourt, etc is just 500 million. How will you explain this knowing this is the price for a duplex in Maitama, Asokoro or VGC?

What everyone is missing here is Nigeria's defence budget is opaque to guide against hazardous effects in War. The more you look the less you see. It has it's advantages and disadvantages. Someone can decipher what that means. It's like saying choose between freedom and security. I'd rather my enemy don't know my true capabilities until the shooting starts. It's between choices, States choose between making obvious their strengths for prestige and or deterrence while others choose moderate ambivalence and still others choose secrecy. States like China, Russia, Israel, India, Pakistan and Nigeria among others are highly secretive. Everyone knows China's defence budget is many times more than what is on official paper.

Even @$300m a pop which is no chump change, Nigeria and the Chinese Government should put their financial heads together to work out some Financial arrangements to come up with a minimum of 2, ($600m), this is less than 10% both Countries are going to collectively spend on ONE of the Railway lines@$8.5B.

And you are not out of order about the Submarines. Truth be told Nigeria is punching below it's weight for fear of Pax Nigeriana and starting an unhealthy arms race in Africa but alas no one is waiting for us. So Nigeria is stepping up the tempo to show whose boss. We have the mechanism to do so bringing all elements of our national power to bear when necessary. Examples abound: Boko Haram threat suddenly we mustered 2.1 billon dollars; even though misappropriated. Now the present threats from external forces willing to arm the region and the Maritime fund materializes. Mal-administration and corruption has cost us a lot but you under-estimate Nigeria to your peril and no one does that. Nigeria can afford to acquire Frigates and Submarines on basis even if on loan and it will eventually. Russia and China are willing to give those loans. All of these is covered in the Navy's medium and long term threat Assessments and it's a continuous process. Our military also plans for purpose not for grandstanding which is why you see Equipment-to-Task purchases. The Frigates and Submarines are coming. Essentially a self sustaining blue water expeditionary fleet.

I'll probably hold on, on the Submarines, invest in other areas first. At the minimum we should have 1 Frigate, 2 Corvettes and 4 missile boats.

I'd understand for prestige the big name tickets but OPV's are actually cheaper to run and they are the new work horse of the Sea. For enduring presence at Sea against contemporary threats they pack a punch and make sense and most Navies go for it. Besides in War if an open design can be reconfigured to meet existential threats. Talk of killing two birds with one stone.

In my thinking the Frigate and Submarine are for deterrence and statement in an increasingly bold and ambitious neighborhood.

He achieved those feats in academics as further studies after the basics for qualification as a pilot/fighter pilot in the Nigerian Air Force starting with the officer entry level courses which includes all the subjects such as aero-dynamics etc and training necessary to become a Pilot Officer at NDA. These are partakers of the Regular Officers course. The services also allow for Direct Short Service Courses for Nigerian University graduates where your focused discipline is adjudged relevant for which arm of the Armed Forces.

The Nigerian Air Force has a system of starting them young. I wrote my first Air Force Exams for admittance into Air Force Schools as a kid and the process goes on and on.

In Nigeria's military the further you study the better your chances of promotion to higher ranks. So you see young officers undertake further studies both in military courses and academic courses. Nigeria has military institutions starting from the prestigious NDA to armed forces command and staff college up to the National Defence college (formerly War college) to be upgraded to National Defence University. The Nigerian military places premium emphasis on military education and our military also allow highly coveted slots to foreign countries especially friendly African countries. It is believed Nigeria has Africa's best Military Educational Institutions however Nigeria allows it's Officers study exchanges with other such institutions in Africa, Europe, Russia and America.

Let me give u some intelligence on the present state of SA' military: SANDF present capabilities exists on paper. South Africa's military lacks the capacity to mount credible lethal offensive for a decisive victory in combat. This is an Army it's soldiers coming under live fire in Sudan didn't want to be anywhere near it. I can give u more but I'll leave it here. U can challenge it as usual with no intellectual or empirical proof as usual because of cause u want to be heard.

Terror attacks in Algeria are also hard to track, but the army seems to be doing a good job in all. Over 20 years fighting terror, you learn a thing or two.

The guys in Egypt on the other hand are simply messing up. With the sort of military they have, one of the largest in the world, and a significant Israeli buffer on the other side, you'd expect they'll be better.

That's unfortunately not the case.

You bet, sure thing! Not new to us. If the money is right methinks is better we create our own Air Combat Stations there and provide tactical air missions over-lay and hire our instructor pilots to help them build the critically missing capacity.

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) today took delivery of the first batch of 5 out of 10 Super Mushshak aircraft being expected from Pakistan. The first batch of the trainer aircraft, which is for the primary flying training of NAF pilots at 401 Flying Training School, Kaduna, was received on arrival by the Air Officer Commanding Air Training Command, Air Vice Marshal Chris Okoye.

It would be recalled that the NAF inducted the Super Mushshak aircraft into the NAF inventory on 5 December 2016. This followed the kind gesture of the Pakistan Government to temporarily make 4 Super Mushshak aircraft of the Pakistan Air Force available to the NAF, at no cost, to immediately commence the training of NAF pilots. Since then, the in-house training of NAF pilots had resumed in earnest. With the arrival of the first batch of the NAF's trainer aircraft, the local training of NAF student pilots will receive a boost at a much reduced cost. The new aircraft will soon be inducted into service after assembly and successful test flights.
