You’re right and it just shows Igbos generally don’t do self-reflection. It has been the pattern with Igbos for a very long time. It started in Jos in the 1940s where Igbos were massacred en masse - then later Kano around the same period. And it reached a crescendo on the eve of the Biafra war.

The sad part is that: Igbos never do self-reflection and examine the role they played in their victimisation and take accountability for their actions. However, they’re always quick to make it about other people being ‘jealous’ of them and keep repeating the same mistake everywhere. Are Kenyans, South Africans, Ghanaians, etc., also jealous of Igbos (who barely own any tangible assets in those countries) as well?

The issue of Lagos and Igbos isn’t even a new thing. It started with Zik but Awolowo was able to stop that politically. Then Ojukwu continued it during Biafra war and Yorubas were able to stop it militarily. This is the 3rd wave of Igbo obsession with Lagos and it has reached a crescendo with LP’s victory during the last presidential election.

Lagos isn’t a place to fight for by any non-Yoruba. It’s a natural fortification due to where it’s located and anyone trying to fight for it is at the worst disadvantage ever - since it’s a natural boiler/cauldron you can’t break (think Ukraine/Russia war and think what happened to Ukrainian forces in Mariupol - that’s basically Lagos).

Yorubas can’t give up Lagos to anyone - 4th largest economy in Africa and 2nd largest coastline in Nigeria after Ondo. And historically, a lot of places that are part of Lagos state today have been the source of the wealth of Yoruba civilisation for 200-300years now. Why would any non-Yoruba think they can claim it? Yorubas are finished if they ever lose Lagos.

The Portuguese, led by Rui de Sequeira (who was a Moorish Portuguese and one of the descendants of the Moors that ruled Iberian Peninsula) were the first to arrive on the shores of what’s known today as Lagos in 1472. When they got to the shores - they met Ijebu people selling clothes and other miscellaneous things.

After liaising with Ijebu king - they were given a post on the coast and they named it, “Lago De Curamo”. Lago De Curamo was subsequently shortened and corrupted to “Lagos” when British explorers and slave traders came later.

Also, “Lagos” was only applicable to the Lagos Island until Lagos state was created in 1967. And Lagos state has since expanded since then to include a big chunk of Ogun state.

I don’t think the average Yoruba person believes in ‘one Nigeria’. South South also isn’t an ethnic group - it’s a conglomerate of ethnic groups and I’d wager that the relationship between Yorubas and these groups vary from group to group.

Anyway, I was asking about Nembe Ijaw because that particular Ijaw group has a long trading relationship with eastern/coastal Yorubas (dating back to 400-500 years ago). Trading with Nembe Ijaw is the reason why these Yoruba traders settled in Warri (a barren land at the time) thus creating a new distinct ethnicity called, Itsekiri.

Yes they’re Yoruba people 100%. However, they’re not aboriginal since they were originally from the hinterland before they were enslaved and sold into slavery. The aborigines of the Lagos land mass are Aworis, Ijebus, Egbas and Oyo. The Egun for example are from Quidah but they were re-settled in Badagry by Oyo after they were expelled by Dahomey since Badagry was one of Oyo’s slave ports.

That said, Saros and Amaros are 100% Lagosians and they were very instrumental in the Yoruba renaissance in Lagos. So, I’m not disputing the fact that they’e Lagosians. But they’re not aboriginal Lagosians (Check the pic I attached to the message).

I somewhat agree with you, however, this isn’t the time to get emotional. All Yorubas have to defend Lagos and once that’s achieved - people can air out their grievances.

Also, I believe most Yoruba globally are in favour of a Yoruba country - although most are quiet about it because there isn’t a clear path on how to achieve it, for now. Once the path becomes clearer - you will see it. Yoruba unionists and liberals are loud/active but they’re in the minority.

Anyone who has a good understanding of how countries work won’t be against Yorubas moving on from Nigeria. Nigeria has the Igbo-problem: a problem similar to a toxic relationship whereby holding onto it, rather than breaking it up - will eventually lead to self-destruction.
