PoliticsIfeanyi Ubah Distributes Palliatives In Lagos by Ctorch(op): 1:08pm On May 04, 2020
SENATOR IFEANYI UBAH DISTRIBUTES COVID-19 PALLIATIVES IN LAGOS

In furtherance of my palliative support to families across the 21 Local Government areas in Anambra, yesterday, I also commenced distribution of palliatives to our people in Lagos and other members of the General public to support families that have been staying at home for weeks following the lockdown in the state.

Undoubtedly, sustaining a lockdown requires access to food and a host of other essentials. The lockdown in Lagos State has affected a lot of our people, particularly those who depend on daily commercial activities to survive.
During the lockdown, I reached out to the Governor of Lagos; His Excellency; Babajide Sanwo-Olu who magnanimously gave me;
290 bags of rice,
750 bags of Garri and
500 cartons of Spaghetti
to which I also added other materials in my personal capacity to augment. I personally supervised the distribution of these palliatives to our people in Lagos.
Some of the Governor’s aides were also on ground to witness the distribution.

Hunger remains a huge threat to the peace, stability and security of every society, this is why me must continue to assist more citizens, especially the poor and those whose livelihood depends on daily income.

This will not only ensure that Nigerians adhere to the movement restrictions, it will also help prevent crime and social unrest while we fight to control the spread of the virus in our country.

I want to commend His Excellency; Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for the courage and pro-efficiency he has brought to bear in fighting this deadly virus. It is worthy of note to thank him for also giving other prominent Igbo personalities and Ohanaeze Ndi Igbo (Lagos) palliatives to distribute to our people in Lagos. I urge them to distribute these palliatives effectively so as to cushion the the effects of this pandemic on the rest of our people.

Conclusively, Nigeria as a nation must not bow to this unfortunate calamity. This is why we must remain committed to standing united to give full support to our government's effort in combating this global epidemic.
May God Almighty protect us as a nation and spring us to rise back stronger from this adversity.

PoliticsLesson Learnt From Rivers And Ebonyi State Governors one man style of leadership by Ctorch(op): 1:51pm On May 03, 2020
Lesson To Learn From Rivers And Ebonyi States Governors one man style of leadership ( Initial gra gra)

When the pandemic started both Governors were too lousy. You keep on hearing flog anybody who violates the order( Ebonyi).

Our borders are totally locked and no one can enter more like a tyrant instead of a democratic Governor ( Rivers state)

Many called it pro- activeness but it was outright foolishness and power drunk Governors.

It will be very risky to even allow these two dictatorial characters to rule Nigeria.

Now as at today Ebonyi has 5 COVID cases and Rivers has 8 COVID cases or so with all the lock down without planning.

These two people can't rule a country with such tendencies.

Firstly as a Governor you appeal to the people who elected you by explaining to them the actions that are bound to come not talking to them like animals.

Secondly , sit with your cabinets and engage the legislature on how to manage the situation and not running a one man show.

If these Governors had sat with their advisors and engage issues as it is all loopholes will be sorted out and right things done.

Both are bad example of a leader.

To the glory of God, as part of measures to alleviate the hardship and cushion the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic ravaging my people, I have commenced the distribution of palliatives to the good people of Anambra across the 21 Local Government Areas in our state.

I am aware that this is a deeply unsettling and difficult time for my people as the disruption of their daily sources of livelihood and economic activities have incurred a huge and devastating impact on their ability to meet their most basic needs. This necessitates the need to combine public health efforts with palliative measures so as to prevent hunger/food insecurity from creating further health and social challenges in our state.

The palliatives include:

26,000 bags of 5kg rice
11,200 bags of 5kg garri
9,400 cartons of tummy tummy noodles
6,000 bottles of cooking oil
32,000 bottles of hand sanitizers
65,000 disposable face masks
8,000 washable face masks
2,000 bags of 25kg garri
500 bags of 25kg rice
42 thermometers and
62 tricycles

While apologizing for my unavoidable absence, I wish to assure Anambrarians that I have provided capable hands and structures that will ensure equitable distribution of these palliatives across the nooks and crannies of Anambra.

I want to use this medium to thank the Executive Governor of Anambra State; His Excellency, Chief Willie Obiano for his commitment to tackling this enormous challenge with courage, resolve and determination.
I also wish to acknowledge the *Anambra Progressives* with profound gratitude, for selflessly volunteering their time and resources to our noble initiative that will provide a long lasting solution to the COVID-19 scourge and the post pandemic era; by the grace of God, our projects will be unveiled subsequently. Come what may, I will keep doing my best to touch lives positively irrespective of the precarious economic situation in the country.

Conclusively, I wish to urge the good people of Anambra to always remember to:

- Practice social distancing;
- Wash your hands regularly or use alcohol-based hand sanitizers;
- Avoid touching your face;
- Self-isolate if you have been in contact with a confirmed case
- Call the NCDC hotlines for Anambra State (08030953771, 08117567363 and 08145434416) if you notice symptoms;
- Above all, let us Keep praying for our state as well as remain disciplined in obeying the Authorities and keep trusting in God. In the end, we shall overcome!

Wike says Rivers Govt to sue FG over withdrawal of N11bn from FAAC

* 2 children of late infected Covid-19 now infected after threatened lawsuit
* Face mask now compulsory in Rivers
* Gov places caveat on Rivers compliance with FG reopening of country to business
By Egufe Yafugborhi
PORT HARCOURT – GOVERNOR Nyesom Wike on Friday disclosed that the Rivers State Government has commenced documentations to sue Federal Government (FG) for “unilateral” withdrawal of N11billion from the Federation Accounts for the Nigerian Police.

Wike, during update briefing on the state of Rivers battle with Covid-19 and sundry national issues also declared compulsory use of face mask in public places while lamenting that Rivers confirmed cases on the pandemic would not have been as much if security operatives were not aiding breach of the state’s closed borders.

He maintained that Rivers would sustain her restrictions at containing the virus and that his administration’s compliance with President Mohammadu Buhari’s decision on gradual reopening of the nation to business would be guided by peculiarities in the state.

On the N11billion withdrawal from the Federation Accounts Allocation Committee (FAAC), Wike, said, “Our lawyers will prepare our papers and we will go to court. Nobody says you cannot support the police, but you must get the consent of states before taking their money.

“I have told Chairman of the Nigeria Governors Forum that Rivers State will challenge this matter in court. It’s not about fighting FG. My state is part owner of that money, so you must make people know. Whatever is the outcome of the case, let it be on record. It’s the sacrifice you make for standing for the truth and the people”

On the state of Covid-19 in Rivers, he said, He said: “The logical conclusion is that pattern of transmission is evidentially predicated on outside importation just as the rate of infection and progression is also relatively low and arithmetical from the date of the index case.

“We expect our COVID-19 infection and prevalent rate to continue along this low trajectory, which gives us the assurance that our hard work is paying off and Rivers certainly not in any dangerous position compared to most other states.

“This is not to say everything about containment and transmission of COVID-19 is under control in Rivers. No, because of challenges occasioned primarily by negative elements who continue to undermine and sabotage our efforts to protect our people from this disease”

Harping on how breach of Rivers borders closure was sabotaging the state’s efforts at containing the pandemic, the Governor cited the multiple infections from contacts of two cases who got infected from outside the state but breached the closed borders to come to infected others.

He said, “Of the five persons that tested positive as at yesterday (Thursday), were two children of the second death case who threatened to sue Rivers Government for confirming their mother to have died of Coronavirus. Today, two of the children have tested positive and even the Pastor who was praying for the woman, the second death case, also tested positive.

“The 7th case was an offshore oil worker who passed a night in a Lagos hotel before returning to Port Harcourt 9 April. When his symptoms started, he was admitted to a private hospital 20 April, discharged, 27 April before testing positive to the virus after almost two weeks of close contact with our people.

“Had the security agency not compromised their responsibilities at the border, this man would have been prevented from coming into Port Harcourt and threatening lives of other people with this virus. 29 April, our surveillance team picked up two men who came from Benin Republic with the help of security men manning the borders despite the closure of all routes to the state.

“So long our security personnel continue to allow people with this virus into the state through the closed borders without checks at assuring that they are quarantined, our people will remain in danger to the effect of Covid-19.”

On the state’s efforts, he said, “The wearing of face mask in all public places is now compulsory throughout the state. State’s Security Council will meet in the next 24 hours to consider and approve necessary mitigating measures for commuters, including the deployment of Government buses to shuttle designated public routes free of charge.

“We have received one GeneXpert RT-PCR testing machine from TOTAL E & P to be deployed for testing in the state. Pamo Hospital has also donated another PCR machine to Rivers, improving the state’s capacity to test for coronavirus.”

He commended all active stakeholders for efforts towards containing the pandemic and disclosed that, “we have secured 188 convictions on prosecution of borders closure violators and 45 illegal markets operators arrested in parts of the state.”

He said, “While we agree with Mr. President’s decision to gradually reopen the country for business, we shall be guided by peculiarities of our state on when to relax the measures we have put in place and gradually restore business activities.

“Until then, I wish to restate that we love all residents of Rivers State. Please maintain social distancing, stay at home, wear face mask in public places and stay safe”

PoliticsAnioma V Igbo by Ctorch(op): 6:32am On May 02, 2020
Last year I took my friend and partner, Tunde Leye to my homestead. In going to that area, we did not cross the Niger River (Oshimmiri in my native dialect) the way most people cross it these days. Rather, we went the old way. We took a boat from Cable Point (Ikpele Nmili) in Asaba, and 12 minutes later, we were sharing a beer with some of my acquaintances at Onicha Marine. You see, for those who know the history, Asaba and Onitsha, prior to the building of the bridge, both communities were quite closeknit, something we’ll discuss later on today.

Tunde preparing to cross the Niger River at Cable Point, Asaba.

The third point in the dictionary definition of a mongrel is “any cross between different things, especially if inharmonious or indiscriminate.”

This is the classic definition of the Igbo people, something I wrote about six years ago. The Igbo people came from different parts of what is today’s Nigeria, and settled in the area that they now call home. This, centuries worth of migration, mixing and consolidation, was anything but harmonious or planned. However, further research has shown me that some of what I wrote then was incomplete, but I will refrain from saying “wrong”, because I am unfit to untie Elizabeth Isichei’s shoelaces, and it was from her 1976 work, A History of the Igbo People, that I drew heavily for that piece.

As an aside, I think it’s time for me to do my first social media appeal. Is anyone willing to finance me to go and sit with her in New Zealand once this pandemic is over? She lives there now, and she is such a repository of Igbo history. She was born in 1939 which means that at 81, the window for a comprehensive debrief of the stuff which didn’t make any of her three books that focused on the Igbo people is closing…

Let me go back to topic.

In the last few days there has been a lot of argument on Twitter about whether the Igbo speaking people of Delta State in Nigeria are Igbo, or something called Anioma. Some people from this area have pointed out that they have been victims of taunts by some Igbos from the East of the Niger, who have themselves said that Delta Igbos are not Igbo.

Both sides of this argument are right, but one tweet I saw was an outright lie. There is no one from the East who will call a native Anioma person “Onye ofe mmanå. That particular slur is reserved for Yoruba people as the thinking behind that stereotype is that the Yoruba people cannot cook, but rather drown their soups in oil and pepper to cover the lack of culinary skills. My pot belly can tell you that that stereotype is way off, but that is another topic for another day…

The words used for the various peoples of the former Bendel are as follows — NdË Ika to describe the Igbo speaking peoples of the Midwest; NdË Idu to describe the Bini people; NdË ohu (a slur) to describe the Esan people (and the history of this is actually linked to Benin); NdË Usobo to describe those in the “proper Delta”, that is the Ijaw, Ijekiri, Isoko and Urhobo.

Now, the problem with most of Nigeria, is that we do not know where we are coming from. Generally, if you do not know where you’re coming from, it’s kinda hard to know where you’re going to.

Too many Igbo people both East and West of the Niger, do not know where they are coming from. Referring back to the piece I highlighted earlier, I pointed out that, “ The Anioma sub-group is divided into two, Enuani and Ukwuani. Enuani and Onitsha people migrated from Igala along with Ishan.” This is incomplete.

In the intervening years, I’ve had discussions with older men in Onitsha, Idumuje-Ogboko, Onicha Ugbo, Atani, Obosi, Issele Azagba and Ibusa, and built a more complete profile. Yes, some Onitsha people indeed came from the Igala area, but most claim their ancestry from around Benin (possibly from what is now called Igbanke), who fled East sometime in the 16th Century to escape the wrath of Oba Esigie. These people, under their leader, Eze Chima, founded a number of towns along the way — Ìnicha Ugbo, Ìnicha ÌlÍna, Issele Uku, Issele Azagba, and then one of their number crossed the great river, and settled at Ìnicha Mmiri, which is today known simply as Ìnicha, or as the British colonists three centuries later transcribed it, Onitsha.

Now, to cross to what became Onitsha, that band of ämå Eze Chima (children of Eze Chima) must have crossed the river at the closest point where the water is calmest. From the area that was called Ikpele Nmili by the natives, but was rechristened Cable Point by the British when they set up their communication channel there soon after decimating the population of Asaba. These ämå Eze Chima were helped too cross by the locals who had themselves settled there two generations earlier under the leadership of Nnebisi, who had himself left his hometown, Nteje in today’s Anambra State. Nteje itself has Igala origins, and I have an appointment with the Eje of Ankpa in today’s Kogi state, to discuss this relationship (note the title of their traditional ruler — Eje, and then relate it to Nteje)…

According to Dennis Osadebey in the book, Building A Nation, Nnebisi was the son of an Nteje woman, Diaba, who had gotten pregnant for an Igala man, Ojobo. Nnebisi grew up in Nteje thinking he was of the kindred, but one day, after a quarrel, he was told that his father was not from there, so he could not take part in land sharing. He thus left Nteje with his followers, and followed a route which brought him to the great river.

If you look at a map of those areas, it is quite easy to trace the route taken by Nnebisi, which must have taken him through Nsugbe, and then along the Anambra River (Ìma Mbala), and then to the point where the Anambra River joins the Niger River. That precise point where the Anambra River joins the Niger River, is coincidentally, the precise point where you can take an eight minute boat ride and land at Cable Point in Asaba.

Nnebisi and his people crossed, landed at Ikpele Nmili and decided to plant their crops there for the year, given that planting season was just starting. A year later, they were pleasantly surprised to find how good their harvest was (of course the area is rich in alluvial soils brought from upstream by the river), so they decided not to move from there. Nnebisi called the place Ani Ahaba (We have settled in this land), and four hundred years later, some white chap hearing the name that the natives called their land, wrote “Asaba” in his map, and not Ahaba.

That man was Carlo Zappa, an Italian priest who was appointed Prefect of the Upper Niger by the Catholic Church to build the faithful in the region. He spent a lot of time converting the natives in both Asaba and Onitsha, and all the way to Ojoto, East of the Niger, and Agbor, West of the Niger. A look through Catholic records during the era of the Ekumeku resistance will show that at the turn of the century, most of the Catholic priests in what is now the Diocese of Issele Uku in Delta State, came from the Onitsha area, as they were all under the same ecclesiastical province. These records are still available.

A look at the roll call of the dead from the Aba Women’s affair of 1929, shows that the wife of the Sanitary headman in the Opobo area, was from Asaba, which kind of tells you the direction in which people went in the decades leading up to the split of Southern Nigeria into East and West in 1954. Up until that point in 1954, many from the Igbo speaking areas just west of the Niger River, found it easier to cross the river to do their business. And why not?

The distance between Asaba and Owerri is just 102km. Asaba to Enugu is 125km, while Asaba to Umuahia is 142km. All of these places are closer to Asaba than Warri, which in modern Nigerian geopolitics is in the same state as Asaba. Warri is 176km from Asaba. The Asaba man, when he arrives in either of Enugu, Owerri or Umuahia, speaks the same language as the people in those places, barring the normal dialectal differences that occur in languages that are spread over large geographical areas. This same Asaba man, would arrive in Warri, and would be at a complete loss as to what the native in Warri is saying…

Referring back to Dennis Osadebe, I’ll recommend that any young Anioma person who wants to learn his history should find Osadebe’s book, Building A Nation, and read it. Osadebe understood where he was coming from, and was unequivocal about it. Thus it was that he joined first the Asaba Union, then by sheer force of will helped to coalese it into the Western Ibo Union, and then by 1939, he was the General Secretary of the Ibo Union. He joined OBN Eluwa on his trip around both Eastern and Western Igboland between 1947 and 1953, a trip which created the Igbo identity that we know today (until 1966) at least.

Osadebe was at the forefront of agitation to remove the Asaba Division from the Benin Province to which it had been joined in 1931 and either rejoin it to the Onitsha Province where it had been prior, or create a province of its own. Of course that agitation fell flat in 1954 once the Southern Region was split into East and West, but being a pragmatic fellow, Osadebe teamed up with his Benin and Delta Division neighbours to campaign for the creation of the Midwest Region, a campaign which succeeded in 1963 with Osadebe becoming premier of the region. Even at that, Osadebe maintained his close relations with his kin from across the river, and thus it was that when war broke out four years later, more than any other, Osadebe’s people, from Asaba, bore the biggest blow that any town in Nigeria faced, the Asaba Massacre of 1967.

This was where things began to take a negative turn for the Midwestern Igbo identity. In 1964, a brilliant and ambitious 30-year old from Asaba joined the public service. Phillip Asiodu, an Oxford graduate who spoke Yoruba as a first languge, rose very fast and by mid-1966 as Nigeria was melting down around everyone, was already a Permanent Secretary in the federal civil service.

Unfortunately, he faced the same mistrust that every Midwest Igbo faced in Nigeria of the time: where did his loyalties lie? With Nigeria, or with the rebels? He chose Nigeria, and as tends to be the case with people who have to prove themselves, showed his loyalty to Nigeria only too well.

Asiodu was the one who adviced Gowon to renege from the Aburi Accord when he pointed out that Ojukwu had outmanouvered Gowon in that meeting in Ghana. The moment Gowon reneged on that deal, war became inevitable. The war had a personal effect on Asiodu as his brother Sidney, a well known prize winning athlete, was killed during the Asaba Massacre in 1967. But Asiodu kept his head down, and remained firmly Nigerian, and non-Igbo. That was the birth of the split in identity.

A people defeated in war have a tendency to bow their heads. Those who can, reject being members of that defeated group. So it is no surprise that those Igbos who could (borderlands) decided that they no longer wanted to be Igbo. Midwest Igbos created a new identity to the extent that the town of Igbo Akiri changed its name to Igbanke, and its most prominent son, Samuel Chiedu Osaigbovo Ogbemudia, who along with Alexander Madiebo narrowly escaped death in the July 1966 coup, dropped “Chiedu” from his name entirely, and emphasised Osaigbovo. To be honest, I cannot hold people responsible for such behaviours. The city of Gdansk in Poland was once called Danzig, and it was in Germany…

Going back to Dennis Osadebe, after the war, some prominent Igbos including Osadebe banded together to try and resurrect the Igbo Progressive Union which had been proscribed by Aguiyi-Ironsi in 1966. So they formed the Igbo National Assembly who’s stated goal was to unify Igbos under a common umbrella body. In no time, the INA was banned by the FG, but by 1976, shortly after the murder of Murtala Mohammed, they tried again, and this time, went the route of a socio-cultural organisation. Thus Ohaneze NdË Igbo was born, and one of the original signatories to the Ohaneze charter was Dennis Osadebe. Along with Ben Nwabueze, and a few others whose names I don’t recall.

Osadebe knew that the place of the Midwestern Igbo in Nigeria’s geopolitics would always be with his kin from across the river, and he always acted accordingly. Osadebe was the one who coined the term Anioma, as the entry region of the Midwestern Igbos into Ohaneze. Some of these things are simple to check out, for example, the expression “Anioma” does not appear in any document predating 1975.

The funny thing is that by 1992, even Asiodu who was perhaps most directly responsible for the identity crisis facing his people, had come around, and along with some notable people from Anioma, wrote a letter to the military head of state, Ibrahim Babangida asking him to take Anioma out of Delta state, excise Onitsha and Atani from Anambra state, and create an Anioma state which would have been a part of what is now the South-East geopolitical zone. The signatories to that letter, dated 15 June 1992 where as follows: Nnamdi Azikiwe, Owelle Onicha; Dennis Osadebe, Ojiba Ahaba; Phllip Asiodu, Izoma Ahaba; Anthony Modebe, Ogene Onicha; Ben Nwabueze (from Atani in Anambra state); Chukwuma Ijomah (from Aboh in Delta state); and Ukpabi Asika. BIC Ijomah died just over a month ago, so of all the sages who signed that letter, Ben Nwabueze and Phillip Asiodu are still with us, and for whatever reason, IBB did not act on the letter.

What is the lesson from Chief Asiodu’s apparent turnaround?

Once your name is Emeka (figurative of course), Nigeria will always happen to you.

That is what people like Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala understand.

That is what people like Austin Okocha understand.

That is what great men like Osadebe, Ijomah, Achuzia, and eventually Asiodu, understood.

The truth is that based on our history, the Anioma man never saw the Niger River as a barrier. As a matter of fact, just read Chinua Achebe’s Chike And The River, and you’ll get a sense of how people used to cris-cross the river at that salient point before the bridge was built. The remnants are still there today. Cable Point projects into the river, it is clearly an old market, and Onitsha Marine also projects into the river. That is the original location of the famous Onitsha Market. Has any one from Onitsha ever stopped to ask himself why the Basilica of Holy Trinity was built basically a few metres away from the river at Onitsha Marine? Cross the river to Asaba and St. Joseph’s Catholic Church is in an almost identical position. Both churches were built about the same time, commissioned by the same man, Carlo Zappa.

How else do you explain that the dialect of Igbo spoken in Asaba, and that spoken in Onitsha, are the same language?

In the end, the Anioma man, because Biafra lost a war 50 years ago, may deny his identity all he wants, but it will not change the fact — in the Byzantine politics of Nigeria, the day will come when Nigeria will tell you who you are.

I think that is the one thing Nigeria never fails at.

Once your name is Emeka, or Chike, or Nnamdi, or Uju, or Chukwuma, or Obi, or Ogechukwu, or Ekwi, or Azuka, or Ike, or Nonso, or Ifeanyi, or indeed Cheta, the day will come, when Nigeria will tell you who you are. Don’t be caught flat footed.

For the Igbos from the East, never forget some facts — the most effective Biafran diplomat during the war was Raphael Uwechue, Oguluzeme Ogwashi-Uku. The majority of the weapons that were supplied to Biafra came from France, and it was his efforts. Almost all of the CARITAS flights that saved starving Biafran children, had his fingerprints on them. Plus the fact that Emeka Ojukwu, Ikemba Nnewi got out of Biafra in the end and spent 12 years in exile in a French speaking country, was due to his diplomatic efforts. Raphael Chukwu Uwechue was also President-General of Ohaneze NdË Igbo for four years. NdË Anioma, that was your son.

Also, Igbos from the East, never forget that the successful commander of Biafran forces during the war was Joseph Achuzia, Ikemba Ahaba. From 4 October 1967 to 12 October 1967, he prevented Nigerian forces from successfully crossing the Niger River.

The Nigerians could only establish a bridgehead at Onitsha Marine before they were beaten back by Achuzia. This defeat was one of the things that led to the massacre of his kinsmen in Asaba on 7 October 1967. On 31 March 1968, Achuzia directed Jona Uchendu’s company of about 700 men in what became Biafra’s most spectacular success of the war, the Abagana Ambush. In that event, 700 Biafran men defeated a Nigerian force of 6000 men. Only 100 Nigerian soldiers, including Murtala Mohammed survived. It was after that action that Murtala did not take part in the war again. Achuzia who died two years ago, was also an Anioma son.

The video of a father rejecting his son over fear of contracting and spreading COVID-19 in Ekiti State has gone viral.

In the video which was recorded four days ago by one of the security men attached to Fajuyi Pavilion, where the Ekiti State Enforcement Task force uses as its base for coordination of daily operations, a certain Mr Femi Adeoye refused to cover-up for his son who travelled from Lagos to Ekiti even after his father had advised against embarking on the journey.

Mr Adeoye stated in the video that he had told his son not travel so he does not expose himself to the COVID-19 pandemic, however, the young man disregarded his father’s words and embarked on the rather treacherous journey.

Mr Adeoye said he had reported that his son was journeying from Lagos and stressed that he would not take the young man home because his house had no space where his son could isolate himself.

He urged the authorities to take charge and keep his son under close observation, lest he leaves the state in jeopardy.

The rather disappointed father having made his case, left his son with the security personnel who was making a mockery of him, urging Mr Adeoye to go home with his son, claiming that the son has been tested and certified free of COVID-19.

PRESS STATEMENT ON VIRAL “FATHER REJECTS SON” VIDEO

Wednesday, April 29, 2020

1. The attention of the Ekiti State COVID-19 Task force has been drawn to a video clip in circulation where a man refused to allow his son, who just returned from a trip outside the state, into his house until he had been isolated for 14 days as stipulated by NCDC protocol for preventing community spread of COVID-19 in Ekiti State.

2. The Task force commends Mr Femi Adeoye, for refusing to cover-up his son’s travel history and for denying him access into the house without confirming his COVID-19 status.

Mr Adeoye epitomizes the Ekiti ethos of selflessness, which places greater premium on the collective good of the society above personal and emotional considerations. This is the core of the Values Orientation policy of the Fayemi-led Administration.

3. We also consider it necessary to inform members of the public that the video was recorded four days ago, by one of the security men attached to the Fajuyi Pavilion, where the Enforcement Task force uses as its base for coordination of daily operations.

The security man who recorded the encounter is neither a health worker, nor qualified or authorized to determine the health status of the young man. So, none of his actions or misstatements reflect the capacity or preparedness of the State Task force to combat the COVID-19 virus. The officer in question has been suspended pending further investigations, for acting outside the jurisdiction of his scope of authority.

4. Following the encounter, the young man has been in custody of the state for the past four days, and has since been take to one of the designated quarantine centres, where he would be for 14 days, in line with laid down procedure that dictates that anyone who sneaks into the state, would be quarantined four fourteen (14) days, at their own cost. His samples will also be taken for testing in order to ensure he has not been infected in the course of his travels to high incidence areas of the country.

5. We implore members of the public to emulate the patriotic zeal of Mr Adeoye, and promptly report to the Ekiti State COVID-19 Taskforce, any out-of-state traveller who sneaks into their neighbourhood, or places of abode. This is to safeguard against the likely health hazard that such returnees portend for the larger society.

Rivers State government has sent 150 non-indigenes to their states of origin in the North, Ebonyi and Akwa Ibom as well as Niger Republic, as part of measures to curb the spread of Coronavirus pandemic.

The state profiled the affected persons and sent them to their states and country of origin through the Ministry of Social Welfare.

Commissioner for Social Welfare, Mrs Inime Aguma, led other officials of the ministry to profile the vagrants before they were evacuated to their states and local government areas of origin.

The commissioner said the evacuation was meant to protect Rivers indigenes from the raving virus.

She added that the exercise was not targeted at any ethnic group but aimed at removing vagrants with potential to spread Coronavirus on the streets and in their communities.

Mrs. Aguma said adequate arrangements were being made to ensure that the vagrants were transported to their locations in dignity.

Governor Nyesom Wike, in a state-wide broadcast on Monday, said: “We have also directed the Commissioner of Social Welfare to round up and deport all vagrants, including the almajiri, to their states of origin to protect our people from the threat they present to the transmission of this pandemic.”

Also, the governor, on Tuesday, arrested five persons for violating the lockdown order.

Wike announced the arrest while monitoring compliance with the order in parts of Port Harcourt and Obio/Akpor local government areas.

The offenders, who were not on essential duties, were reportedly handed over to security agencies.

In his recent broadcast, Wike ordered a 24-hour lockdown on Elekahia, Rumukalagbor-Elekahia link road; Rumuomasi, including Stadium Road, and Rumuobiokani.

The governor drove through Elekahia and Rumuomasi where there was full compliance with the lockdown, with security personnel manning strategic points on the roads.

At Rumuobiokani, Wike arrested two women on leisure drive and handed them over to security personnel, while at Rumuomasi roundabout, he seized a motorcyclist.

PoliticsMuseveni, Garang Dined With Biafrans by Ctorch(op):
Yoweri Kaguta Museveni and John Garang de Mabior forged a strong bond in Dar-es-Salaam just as a group of Biafran intellectuals relocated to the Tanzanian capital at the end of the civil war.

Garang was in Nigeria before war broke out and was taken out of Biafra by Captain Andrew Nwankwo in 1967. Both landed in Dar-es-Salaam and were well received by President Julius Nyerere.

Museveni was at the University of Dar-es-Salaam [UDSM] to study Political Science and one of his favourite lecturers was Professor Okwudiba Nnoli, from Oraifite. He also attended the History class of Dr. Walter Rodney.

Museveni and Garang got to meet in 1970 just as the Ugandan was rounding off studies. The Sudanese came in with a degree in Economics from Grinnell College, Iowa, United States.

Another Biafran at UDSM was Dr. Theodore Okeahialam, from Otulu, Ahiara-Mbaise. He was the Paediatrician who managed malnourished Biafran children in Gabon.

I got to know Okeahialam, now professor emeritus, from an old school pal, Emeka Onyenacho. And the man confirmed the Museveni-Garang link that was developed in Tanzania.

He said:”President Museveni of Uganda was a student of Political Science at that university then, tutored by our own Prof. Nnoli [now late] and the famous Guyanese Afro-Thinker, Walter Rodney, my friend, also late.”

Prof. Okeahialam’s younger brother, Heron, played a key role during the Civil War. A British-American trained engineer, he was the brain behind Radio Biafra. The small but powerful station continued to operate from ‘unknown’ locations.

Okeahialam, the engineer, once hung the aerial on top of a palm tree in his Otulu village while Nigerian soldiers searched all over occupied Enugu for the location. When Biafra fell in 1970, Col. Olusegun Obasanjo was excitedly surprised to find the Radio station operating from Obodoukwu, Urualla.

Okeahialam, the medical doctor, was at the State House, Lagos in 1966 as Gen. Johnson Aguiyi-Ironsi’s physician. That was where he met Capt. Nwankwo.

Nwankwo was the Air Force Aide de Camp to Ironsi, the Head of State. There were other ADCs. Lt. Sanni Bello represented the Army, Sub. Lt. Den Okujagu was for the Navy and from the police came Timothy Pam.

When Ironsi was killed in Ibadan, Nwankwo was lucky. A deal with Bello saved the Air Force officer. Bello confused the assassins, causing them to fire at an empty bush while Nwankwo ran to safety on the other side.

Garang was a student of Government Secondary School, Afikpo. He came from troubled Sudan and was already battle tested. At ten, the boy was orphaned. Some elders of his Dinka ethnic nationality pushed him out to acquire education.

There were other African students at Afikpo under disciplinarian principal, George Chukwuneke Akabogu, from Nnewi. Hilton Sinyangwe came from Tanzania. Iyassu Gutama was Ethiopian. From Namibia [South West Africa] there was Samuel Chichindua.

Those were the years of Tete Mbuk and Precious Omuku. Paul Omeruo, Bernard Akpunonu and Lorderick Emejuru had joined from Nigeria Military School, Zaria. One of the junior students was Sasa Nwoke, the boy who would later become famous as gunner of the armoured vehicle, Corporal Nwafor.

Capt. Nwankwo had lived in Tanzania as a member of the Presidential Fleet of Mwalimu Nyerere. He had also done similar job for Emperor Haile Selassie of Ethiopia.

Nwankwo was a member of course six, Haile Selassie Military Academy, Harar [July 21, 1962-October 12, 1965]. His mates included: John Atom Kpera, Sunday Orinya Ifere, Umaru Alhaji Mohammed, Robert Omakwu Obeya, Peter John Okoli [N/591] and Lambert Ogbonna Ihenacho.

Others were Peter Adomokai, Layiwola Yusuf, Philip Onyekweli, Ezekiel Umaru, Innocent Ihemekwele and Augustine Azubugo.

It was therefore easier to ask Nwankwo to take Garang to Tanzania in 1967. It did not come as a surprise that the country was the first to recognize Biafra. By 1968, Onubogu was a Major and in charge of Uli Airport.

Nyerere had turned Tanzania to a safe haven for revolutionaries from all over the globe. Eduardo Mondlane was there, from Mozambique. Ernesto Che Guevera, Malcolm X and Stokely Camichael came from the Americas.

Laurent-Desire Kabila of Congo lived there. So did Apollo Milton Obote of Uganda and Kenyan opposition leader, Oginga Odinga. Kabila’s son, Joseph, spent childhood and part of his teenage years in Dar-es-Salaam.

Congolese thought Joseph Kabila was more Tanzanian because he spoke better English and Kiswahili than French. The father owned property in Dar-es-Salam, something that did not go down well with Gueverra.

When Museveni got to UDSM, the campus was littered with intellectuals. Apart from Nnoli and Okeahialam, there was the Nigerian, Claude Ake. The list included Ghana’s Ayi Kwei Armah, Ngugi wa Thiong’o of Kenya, Mahmood Mamdani from Uganda and the Zimbabwean, Nathan Shamuyarira.

Dr. Walter Rodney was a popular face. He first arrived in 1966, left in 1967 came back two years later and stayed till 1974. His famous book: ‘How Europe Under developed Africa’, was written right inside UDSM.

This was the environment that gingered the duo of Museveni and Garang to more battles from the bush. They were lettered and revolutionary at the same time. Garang later bagged a doctorate after post graduate studies in Agric. Economics from the Iowa State University.

I saw President Museveni in 1991. He had become President of Uganda in 1986. The former guerilla fighter came to Abuja for the African Union Summit [then known as OAU] fully loaded.

I think his wife was also there with him and I was given two of his books. One, ‘The Path of Liberation’, was a selection of his speeches in 1986. The other, ’Consolidating the Revolution’, spanned through speeches delivered in 1989.

At the International Conference Centre, Museveni asked West Africa to thank Nigeria for stabilizing the sub region with ECOMOG, a bold step no country in East Africa could take.

Museveni felt very much at home with Chief Moshood Abiola. There were reports that the Nigeria billionaire played a huge role in the emergence of the Ugandan leader as president.

Garang went back to Sudan. He later became First Vice president. On July 30, 2005, Garang died in an air crash. The chopper was part of Museveni’s fleet.

PoliticsN5bn COVID-19 Personal Protective Equipment Fraud Uncovered In NDDC - Sahara R. by Ctorch(op): 7:54pm On Apr 24, 2020
EXCLUSIVE: N5bn COVID-19 Personal Protective Equipment Fraud Uncovered In Niger Delta Development Commission - Sahara Reporters

In a letter dated April 6, 2019 with a Ref number NDDC/MD/HPU/20/4/EHSS/05 seen by SaharaReporters, it was revealed how the commission approved N5,474,647,125.00 for procurement of Personal Protective Equipment for health workers and provision of community-based sensitisation campaign against the spread of COVID-19 to a company named Signora Concept Services Limited.

The Niger Delta Development Commission is currently reeking of a multi-billion naira fraud involving the board and top management members of the agency over the purchase of Personal Protective Equipment and sanitizers to tackle Coronavirus in the nine states making up the region.

The letter reads, “This is to notify you that based on your tender for emergency procurement of specialized medical Personal Protective Equipment for health workers and provision of community based sensitization campaign against the spread of COVID-19 and other communicable diseases in the nine state of the Niger Delta region, the contract has been awarded to you at the total cost of N5,474,647,125.00 only inclusive of 7.5 VAT as corrected and modified in accordance with the instruction to tenderers by the Niger Delta Development Commission.”

The letter was signed by Alex Ndudi Enebeli, Head of Procurement Unit for the Acting Managing Director of the NDDC.

Even though the company was given 15 days to deliver all items stated in the letter, findings by SaharaReporters showed that Signora Concept Services Limited was yet to deliver any equipment to a single state in the Niger Delta region 18 days after the contracted was awarded and payment made.

“Apart from N70m donation made by the NDDC about a month ago, we are yet to receive any single health equipment from the commission.

“Though we were promised ventilators, we got a letter later from them that it won’t be possible again.

“I’m surprised hearing now from you that over N5bn was budgeted for PPEs to be distributed to Niger Delta states,” a task force member of one of the Niger Delta states told SaharaReporters on Friday.

Checks by SaharaReporters also revealed that the NDDC had in January 2020 released the sum of N4,096,798,332.50 for the supply of Lassa Fever equipment that were never delivered.

Infuriated by the level of fraud going on in the agency, a Niger Delta socio-political organisation, the Ijaw Intellectual Advocates, has asked President Muhammadu Buhari to sack the Minister of Niger Delta, Godswill Akpabio.

National Coordinator of the group, Salaco Yerinmene, said the fresh contract approved by the NDDC interim management committee was done to defraud the people of the region under the guise of purchasing COVID-19 PPEs and sanitizers that will never be delivered to any community under the nine states making up the oil-rich region.

He said, “We have clearly realised that the IMC Akpabio constituted and placed under his supervision was to jeopardise the commission and continually pillage the treasury of the Niger Delta people which must be resisted by any means necessary.

“While we leave the reading public to guess as to the motive behind this contract, we will like to ask some questions begging for answers.

“Why should Akpabio and IMC give priority to projects that are not bothering the Niger Delta people?

“How many communities in the Niger Delta region were sensitised through this medium over the spread of Coronavirus since the outbreak of the disease?

“If the affirmative to question 2, then where did the money go into?

“Why not use the money to construct major roads across the coastal communities or use the fund to provide potable water to the various communities?

“Mr Akpabio should know that as young intellectuals, we are aware of the game he is playing in looting the commonwealth of the people and he should also be aware that his days are numbered.

“It is in Akpabio’s best interest to resign and summit himself to the EFCC, else we shall have no other option than to fight to the latter.

“We are again reiterating our stand that Akpabio must and should be suspended and be investigated by the EFCC and the forensic audit should commence immediately, otherwise the crude oil from all Ijaw territories shall never be used to fund the present corruption going on at the NDDC.”

It is not the first time fraud of this magnitude would be uncovered in the NDDC, it is in fact among a long list of similar cases.

In January this year, the interim management committee of the commission announced the discovery of fraudulent contracts worth N1rn.

According to the committee, at least 1,921 ‘emergency contracts’ were sanction by the former management of the agency despite its annual budget being only around N400bn.

A prominent activist in the region, who asked not to be named, told SaharaReporters on Friday that the NDDC had always been used as conduit by powerful persons in government to siphon huge public funds and deprive the people of developmental projects that could have changed their lives for the better.

He said, “The NDDC has been more of a curse for the people of Niger Delta than a blessing. All the big politicians do is to use the agency to milk people of the region by stealing funds meant for development of the region and thereby deny them of the basic infrastructure and amenities that could have raised the quality of their lives. It is a cesspool of corruption.”

So far, the Niger Delta region has 42 reported cases of Coronavirus spread across Delta (six), Akwa Ibom (11), Edo (17), Ondo (three), Rivers (three), and Abia (two).

ATTEMPT TO SMUGGLE 24 WOMEN FROM AKWA IBOM INTO ABIA STATE THROUGH THE BORDER FOILED
Men of the Abia State Vigilante Service have arrested twenty four market women parked in a container truck, at the Ekwereazu Ngwa boundary between Abia and Akwa Ibom states. Ekwereazu is a border community in Obingwa LGA.
The women who came from Akwa Ibom state and were on their way to Aba, were arrested with the truck driver and two of his conductors for violating the border closure and lockdown order by the State Government.
The Commissioner for Home land security, Prince Dan Okoli who was at the scene noted that the situation where people are smuggled into the State poses a great threat to the efforts by the State government to contain the spread of Covid 19.
The driver of the truck, Moses Asuquo from Akwa Ibom State claimed he was going to Aba to purchase stock fish but decided to assist the stranded women.
Recall that recently, Governor Okezie Ikpeazu charged the Local Government Transition Committee Chairmen in all the border communities in the State to tighten up their borders or face sanctions.
The women were sent back to Akwa Ibom from that spot while the driver and his conductors were arrested and handed over to the State Police Command for further action. The vehicle was also impounded.

PoliticsYour Days Are Numbered - Ebonyi Indigenes To Umahi by Ctorch(op): 12:00pm On Apr 23, 2020
The Association of Ebonyi State Indigenes in Diaspora AESID has condemned the eviction of two Journalists from the Government House, Abakaliki by Gov. Dave Umahi, reminding him that he will not be a governor forever as his days in office are numbered.

The governor had during a state-wide broadcast on Wednesday reportedly declared that the Correspondent of the Vanguard Newspapers, Mr Peter Okutu and that of the Sun Newspapers, Chijioke Agwu, should stop covering all government activities in the state.

In an apparent incitement of the people against the journalists, Gov. Umahi who was quoted to have banned the journalists from the Government House, for life, had said he could no longer guarantee their security and would not be able to control the people should they rise against the two reporters.

However, reacting to the development in a statement issued Thursday in Abuja, Chairman of AESID, Ambassador Pascal Oluchukwu, discribed Umahi’s decision as dictatorial.

Oluchukwu said his group has been vindicated by the latest abnormality exhibited by the governor, adding that the state government had forgotten that Journalists have a constitutional right to hold government accountable to the people.

The group said; “Governor Umahi is ruling the state like a Banana Republic where there is no rule of law, hence his desperate move to cover up several atrocities going on in Ebonyi State”.

The Ebonyi indigenous group challenged the governor to tell the world the causes of the recent wave of mysterious deaths in the state, saying the reports by the two journalists should rather be a clue to the government on how best to stop such deaths.

The group however apologised “to the two Journalists, their organisations and the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) for the embarrassing act of our governor”, adding that the State needs to be rescued from the hands of its current handlers, hence the need for more investigative reporting on the activities of the state governor.

“We appeal to Journalists not to be dettered because without critical journalism in a democracy, some actors might likely act like dictators.

“As we speak, there are lot of alleged looting, unreported killings and all manner of misgovernance going on in Ebonyi State. We suspect that the Governor Umahi-led administration was no longer comfortable with these two good Journalists of Vanguard and the Sun Newspapers, hence the public embarrassment he has caused the state.

“The banning of these two Journalists is as a result of a plot to cover up some atrocities already committed. There are people this government has taken their lands forcefully for Airport project, but till now these poor farmers have nowhere to call home again.

“Pensioners have never received anything like pension since this government came in. The governor banned Okada business without providing them another means of livelihood.

“We, the indigenes of Ebonyi in diaspora are saying no to banning of Journalists in Ebonyi Government House and we call on all the Media Houses to beam their searchlight more on the misgovernance going on in our dear state. We also call on all true Civil Society groups to be up and doing for the sake of our people,” the statement said.

PoliticsA Man Belongs To The Fatherland When Things Are Good - Chinua Achebe by Ctorch(op): 2:44pm On Apr 21, 2020
It's true that a child belongs to its father. But when a father beats his child, it seeks sympathy in its mother's hut.
A man belongs to his fatherland when things are good and life's sweet. But when there's sorrow & bitterness he finds refuge in his motherland.
