PoliticsBuhari Congratulates Kaycee Madu On His Appointment As Minister In Canada by Ctorch(op): 2:13pm On Aug 27, 2020
PRESIDENT BUHARI CONGRATULATES NIGERIAN BORN KAYCEE MADU, APPOINTED MINISTER OF JUSTICE IN ALBERTA, CANADA

President Muhammadu Buhari rejoices with Nigerian born Kaycee Madu, appointed Minister of Justice and Solicitor General for the Government of Alberta, in Canada.
Madu makes history as the first African born provincial Minister in Canadian history, and is also the Provincial Secretary and Keeper of the Great Seal of the Province of Alberta.

President Buhari describes the honour as “landmark and historic,” saying it once again pedestals people of Nigerian descent as go-getters, who distinguish themselves in different walks of life.
The President says as the first Black Justice Minister and Solicitor-General in Canada, Madu has written himself into history books, and urges Nigerians, both at home and abroad, to remain good Ambassadors of their country.

PoliticsFlooding: FG Warns 9 States To Prepare For Heavy Floods From September 6 by Ctorch(op): 12:20pm On Aug 27, 2020
The Federal Government has again warned that floods may wreak havoc in many states of the federation.

It said the floods would begin from Kebbi State any time from September 6 going by an alert from the Niger Basin Authority to which Nigeria is a member.

Other states that might be severely hit are Niger, Kwara, Anambra, Delta, Edo, Rivers, Bayelsa, Nasarawa and Kogi that are contiguous to River Niger.

The agency in charge of flood prediction, the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) added that, apart from the fact that Nigeria still had many days of rainfall this year, flooding might be worse, if excess waters from the dams in other countries upstream rivers Niger and Benue are released.

It therefore, asked states and relevant government agencies to clear blocked drainages and dredge river channels as a matter of urgency since Nigeria is located downstream other countries in the Niger Basin.

HIHSA stated that poor drainage systems might cause flash and urban floods in major cities like Abuja,Lagos, Ibadan, Abeokuta, Ado-Ekiti, Osogbo, ,Asaba, Port Harcourt, Yenagoa, , Benin City, Abakaliki, Awka, Nsukka Birnin–Kebbi, Sokoto, Lokoja, Kaduna, Suleja, Gombe, Yola, Makurdi and Lafia,

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) had in its 2020 Seasonal Rainfall Prediction (SRP) released recently warned of heavy flooding that would be caused by torrential rains. It said that the earliest cessation date for rainfall in the southern part of the country is December 28 and September 26 for the North.

Echoing the warning on Tuesday NiMet’s flood alert warning, NIHSA urged communities along the coastal lines to move to safe grounds because the remaining days of this month, September and October would come with heavy rains

The agency’s Director-General, Clement Onyeaso Nze, however, said in a statement that they were monitoring the flood situation along the River Benue axis

According to him , information from the regional Niger Basin Authority (NBA) headquarters in Niamey, Niger Republic, had it that last Sunday, the flood level of River Niger was 6.60 metres, an “ already Red Alert zone.”

The statement reads in part: “This current development portends some level of concern for Nigeria as there could be likelihood of river flooding in the states contiguous to River Niger.

“This flood magnitude sighted in Niamey on August 23, 2020, is expected to arrive Nigeria through Kebbi State around September 6, 2020. Operators of Kainji and Jebba Dams have long been alerted to take appropriate measures in the operation of the reservoirs.

“ Kainji Dam is now spilling water at the rate of 1,000 m3/s, i.e. 86.4 million cubic metres/day. This means that communities downstream Kainji and Jebba Dams could be flooded. The Shiroro Dam on Kaduna River is still impounding, though there is the possibility of spilling water in the weeks ahead.

“The beginning of the last week of August 2020 witnessed return of rains in most parts of the country. Expectedly, this will be accompanied by increasing saturation and wetness of the soil. Under this condition of saturated soil, it is expected that any rainfall of high intensity and long duration might translate into flooding in most parts of the country.

“It should be recalled that the year 2020 Annual Flood Outlook (2020 AFO) publication, which was presented to the public in May 2020 by the Minister of Water Resources, Engr. Suleiman Adamu, predicted that some parts of, at least, 102 LGAs in 28 states fall within the Highly Probable Flood Risk areas, while parts of 275 LGAs in the 36 states of the federation, including the FCT, fall within the Moderately Probable Flood Risk areas.

CultureList Of Obas In Yoruba Land (ranking Of Yoruba Monarchs) by Ctorch(op): 5:24pm On Aug 25, 2020
The ranking of kings or Obas in Yoruba land is a topic that has caused series of controversies as to who is the most powerful Yoruba King in Nigeria between the Ooni and the Alaafin of Oyo.
In a report, the Alake of Egbaland, Oba Adedotun Gbadebo, declared the answer to that question, that the Ooni of Ife remains the number one monarch in Yoruba land and should be given the honour as the number one paramount ruler in the Yoruba culture.

There are many Obas in Yoruba land ruling various Kingdoms, towns and even villages. For instance, the Olubadan of Ibadan is the traditional ruler of Ibadan, the Oba of Lagos is seen as a first class king but rules in Lagos, and so on. These respected monarchs are often seen as custodians of the Yoruba culture and people, and represent the gods.

This post will list the ranking of first class traditional rulers in the Yoruba Empire as listed by the Alake of Egbaland. He identified ego and pride as the sole reason behind the disunity among Yoruba traditional rulers and people in Yoruba land, and called for peace for the progress of the Yoruba speaking people.

Below is a list of the ranking of five principal monarchs in Yoruba land according to their order of superiority.

1. Ooni of Ife

The Ooni of Ife is the most powerful king in Yoruba land. The current Ooni of Ife is Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi . According to the Alake of Egbaland, the Ooni is the first of the five principal Obas in Yorubaland just like the Sultan of Sokoto is the highest ruler in the northern part of Nigeria. This is because his supremacy dates back to the origin of the Yoruba tribe. He is also one of the most influential figures in Nigeria and he recently married Queen Morenike Naomi Oluwaseyi, a prophetess.

2. Alaafin of Oyo
He is the second in line in the ranking of Yoruba monarchs in Nigeria, Lamidi Olayiwola Adeyemi III was born 15 August 1938 and he is the current Alaafin, or traditional ruler, of the Yoruba state of Oyo and righful heir to the throne of its historic empire. His dynasty dates back to the old Oyo empire which recognizes him as the emperor of the Oyo empire. He is among the list of the richest Yoruba king in Nigeria

.
3. Oba of Benin
Some say that the Oba of Benin, or Omo N’Oba, is the highest traditional ruler in Nigeria as he wields influence over the Edo people and is a popular figure in Nigeria. He heads the historic Eweka dynasty of the Great Benin Empire. It is also said that the Yorubas in Nigeria descended from the Benin people, hence the tittle Oba is being used to mean a king. The title of Oba was first created by Oba Eweka I, Benin Empire’s first ‘Oba’, who ascended power between 1180 and 1300. His son, grandson and now his great-grandson, Ewuare II were traditional rulers of Benin in modern-day Nigeria.

4. Alake of Egbaland
Fourth on the list of ranking of obas in Yorubaland is the Alake of Egbaland . He is the paramount Yoruba king of Egba, a city in Abeokuta, Ogun State, southwestern Nigeria. Egba consists of Egba Alake, Owu kingdom rule by the Olowu of Owu Kingdom, Oke-Ona and Gbagura. He was the one who cleared the air concerning how the monarchs in Yoruba land should be ranked starting from the Ooni of Ife to the Awujale of Ijebuland.

5. Awujale of Ijebuland
He is the least on the list of 5 powerful obas in Yoruba land. His kingdom, Ijebu (also known as Jebu or Geebu) was a Yoruba kingdom in pre-colonial Nigeria. It was formed around the fifteenth century. According to legend, its ruling dynasty was founded by Obanta of Ile-Ife. The current Awujale of Ijebuland is Sikiru Kayode Adetona.

There is a recent tussle as to who is superior between the Oba of Lagos and the Ooni of ife (Yoruba Emperor). This should not be so as history backs the Ooni as the most superior paramount ruler of the Yoruba speaking people.

Anambra 2021: Arthur Eze Drums support for Nnewi Candidate

Notable business magnate, Prince Arthur Eze has said that electing Nnewi person as next governor of Anambra state would help hasten the development and job creation in the state.

Eze who was at the palace of Igwe Kenneth Orizu of Nnewi to Introduce the new AIG of Zone 13, AIG Danmallam Mohammed to the Anambra south Traditional rulers council said that Nnewi has contributed greatly to the development of the state and south east in general contending that empowering a son of the soil to succeed obiano at the Agu-Awka government house come 2022 would further energize the people in their drive to make Anambra and south east industrial and economic hubs of nigeria.

He said: Nnewi has contributed greatly to the development of Anambra state annd south east by extension. Notable companies as the Innoson motors, Innoson plastics, Ibeto cement and Ibeto petrochemicals, Capital oil and gas, Coscharis, A-Z oil and gas, Emzor pharmaceuticals, cutix cables among others are owned by Nnewi sons and daughters. Through these companies they created jobs and boost socio-economic development of Anambra, south east and Nigeria in general.

In the past, names like Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, Sir Louis Ojukwu, Akweke Nwafor Orizu among many others were names that projected the image of the state to the outside world. So Nnewi people have done much and in my opinion, if any of their sons gunning for the governorship seat in 2021, is considered to succeed obiano, I belive Anambra state will move to a higher pedestrian.

He further urged the traditional rulers and their subjects to give the AIG all the necessary support he would need to succeed and fight crime

“Please, His Royal Majesties, our main reason of coming to you is not only to introduce the new AIG to you, but also to seek your cooperation and those of your subjects, so that he will succeed.

“The new zone covers Anambra, Enugu and Ebonyi states; but as the host state, it is our duty to help the new zone succeed by helping them nip crime in the bud,” he added.

The chairman of Anambra South Traditional Rulers Council, Igwe Nnabuife of Isseke Ancient Kingdom responded on behalf of the traditional rulers.

Igwe Nnabuife assured the visitors of the support of Anambra South traditional rulers.

He urged the new AIG to hold the new zone professionally, so that police in the zone would not lose sight of their professional duties.

He also commended Prince Arthur Eze for his giant stride in attracting the zone to Anambra.

Earlier, AID Danmallam Mohammed, commended Anambra people and the traditional rulers in particular, for warm reception accorded him on assumption of office as pioneer AIG of Zone 13.

He assured that personnel of the new zone would not derail from the purpose of establishing it.

PoliticsOshiomhole Works For Me, He Is Not My Godfather – Ize-iyamu by Ctorch(op): 9:14am On Aug 24, 2020
The governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Edo, Osagie Ize-Iyamu has commented on his relationship with the former national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the forthcoming election in Edo state.

In an interview on Arise Television on Sunday August 23, Ize-Iyamu stated that Oshiomhole is not his godfather but someone that works for him.

The governorship candidate who noted that he is not new in politics, also recalled how he stepped down for Oshiomhole during the governorship election in Edo state in 2007.

He said; “In 2007, my people were urging me to become governor but I stepped down for him because his area has never had a governor, he comes from Edo north.

“Where I come from, Edo southwest has had a governor. I just thought that well, for equity to prevail, it will be nice to make history. Of course, he has done so well as chairman of APC and I just said well, you know it’s good.

“So for somebody like me to now describe him as a godfather or say Oshiomhole is my god father… on what basis?. We have had history of robust engagement, we have disagreed and come back together, so what you see is mutual respect.

“Yes, you can say he brought Obaseki but Obaseki was new, you can’t compare him to me. I was national vice chairman of ACN; I was one of those who crafted the constitution of the APC. He did not live here even though he was born here, he came from Lagos, so he needed a godfather, he needed someone to nurture him and bring him up.

“But for me, you are talking of an adult, there are so many people I have nurtured. All over the state, they see me as a leader.

“But I have tremendous respect for my elders. I respect those who have excelled in various professions, even my juniors and the reality is that I was born to respect people and I will not disrespect anybody because I am governor. So when you say godfather, just take it out.

“Oshiomhole is working for me , he is campaigning with me because he is also passionate about his party winning Edo and you can’t take that away from him.”

I saw an article where the writer said IJaws were around 2 million and Ibibios around 1.3 million.

But I used to believe Ibibios are more populous than Ijaws

IJAW.
Like Tiv, Ijaw is also one of the most popular languages in Nigeria spoken by over 2 million people as their native language. It is majorly spoken in the oil-rich region(Delta region area). A minority from Ondo, Ekiti, and Bayelsa speak Ijaw also.

IBIBIO.
This is also one of the most popular languages in Nigeria, mostly spoken by the Southern part of Nigeria. About 1.3 million Nigerian speaks Ibibio, especially in Akwa-Ibom state. Ibibio, Efik, and Anaang are closely related languages.

Car TalkInnoson: I Received Order For $4.7m Cars From SierraLeon As NASS Rejects My Cars by Ctorch(op): 7:27am On Aug 16, 2020
I received order for $4.7m cars from S/Leone after NASS lawmakers rejected my vehicles– Innoson

…’Motorcycle price was crashed from N150, 000 to N60, 000, trying to do same with cars’
…Explains why auto assembly plants in Nigeria collapsed

Chief Innocent Chukwuma is the Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of Innoson Vehicles Manufacturing, IVM, a foremost automobile maker in Nigeria.

In this exclusive interview after a facility tour of his Nnewi automobile factory, Chukwuma reveals the secrets behind his success in the automobile industry, why he has never failed in any business ventures, his major challenges, his new factory in Imo State and planned partnership with a foreign company. Excerpts:

Some Nigerians still think that Innoson is just an assembling plant and not a car production company. What is your status?

You are here now and you have seen things yourself. Let me use this opportunity to say this once again; Innoson does not assemble vehicles, we manufacture. We build 100 percent vehicle body here and over 60 percent of the products used in manufacturing the vehicle are gotten from Nigeria.

We make all the carcass of all our vehicles here. We only import some engines and electrical components but produce all the plastic parts here. We have produced many new vehicles according to the demands of our customers and what they need those vehicles for. Even if they need what we do not have, we make the mould and produce their request and to specifications. That is why we are a vehicle manufacturing company, not assembling company.

Despite the challenging terrain of the automobile industry in Nigeria, you have succeeded in

Yes, I started this business from the scratch. So, it may not be out of place to say that I have made a name for myself. However, I still believe that I haven’t reached where I want to be. It might interest you to know that I never fail in any business I have ventured into.

This is because when you go into any business, you have to put your own ideas in it and when you do, the difference will be clear and you can make more money than others. You can also drop the business when you think there isn’t much interest in it again. So, to succeed in any business, don’t follow the crowd, always bring your own initiatives. With that, you will be able to make profits.

That has been my driving force, always looking for new ideas that are different from what everybody knows. For example, when you are into a particular business and it is no longer as lucrative and profitable as it used to because many people have ventured into it, you can leave the business for those people who lack ideas and go into a new business. This is because, as they are coming into the business, the profit margin will continue to diminish. So you leave it for them and find another fresh business idea to develop.

By the time they understand or realise how profitable the new idea is, you have already made your money and leave it for them. However, if the business is still convenient for you and gives you what you want, you can continue.

But if you feel that what you are getting there is not enough, leave it for those people who came to spoil it and develop a new one. That is the system I operate. I started trading in motorcycle parts with my brother. I started by buying from companies like Leventis that were importing the parts then. From there, I started importing myself. Later, I developed a complete motorcycle and not just the parts. I was the first person to develop complete motorcycle in Nigeria.

Because of my experience in the spare parts business, I found out that to bring motorcycle parts and couple them here in Nigeria was cheaper than bringing them as a complete motorcycle. So I decided to give it a try and it worked. I brought my own in parts and hired local mechanics to assemble and couple them. With this, my own cost was 40 percent cheaper. So, while others were selling at N150, 000, I was selling at N80, 000. Then, the cost of second hand motorcycle was N90, 000. People who used to buy second hand motorcycle decided to be buying my own since it was brand new and cheaper.

That’s how I benched my competitors who were selling at N150, 000. So, they had no choice than to adopt my strategy in importing their motorcycles. When they started copying my method, I veered into local production of plastic components of motorcycle parts so that I could be bringing only the iron components from abroad.

This also helped in bringing the price of my motorcycle down to N60, 000 which has been my aim from the onset. My competitors also discovered that it was better for them to buy plastic components from my company than bringing it from abroad. So, they started buying plastic components from me. With that, I left the motorcycle business for them.

Venturing into vehicle manufacturing

After some time, I decided to do what I did in motorcycle in vehicle. So, that’s what I’m doing today. I ventured into vehicle manufacturing immediately I became weak on motorcycle. I changed my focus to vehicle. I studied about vehicle production for about seven years before I could start. When I was building this factory, all my good friends and everybody I knew were asking me why did I venture into the business?

They said all the people who ventured into it in Nigeria failed. I told them to check all the businesses I have done, that none has failed. Before I entered into vehicle manufacturing, I have seen why others failed. And I told them that I would remove that which made others to fail and I did. That’s why I started by manufacturing and not by assembling. The people who failed started by assembling vehicles in Nigeria. And in that case, if anything happened to the parent company, the assembling plant here would lose because foreigners are not interested in building anything here.

They are coming to Africa to make profit and not lose, they want to make as much profits as possible and go. They are not interested to build us.

So, to avoid the pitfalls of others, I went and studied where we had problems and I paid for professionals, expatriates who came here and trained my people. I brought them to Nigeria, about 60 of them, in the first year we started this factory. Some of them finished under one year and left by the second year, I had about 42 and in the third year, I had about 15. Today, I have only eight.

Most vehicle manufacturers are switching from petrol to electric engine. Are you thinking in that direction?

I never built engine for the first time. I only build body and buy engine. What we do here is building complete motor body. Therefore, if electric is better, what I will do is to partner with electric company to supply me electric engine. And in that case, I won’t lose anything. If electric vehicles become the new normal, we’ll switch over to electric

Where do you export to? Do you supply your vehicles to other African countries?

Yes. As of now, I have order of about $4.7million worth of vehicles from Sierra Leone. That’s what I’m producing now for Sierra Leone government. Normally, I do get order and supply from within and outside the country.

What kind of support have you received from the Buhari government?

The Federal Government is doing everything possible to support the manufacturing sector with good policies, but the problem lies in the implementation. They have done enough in terms of policies to support local content but, like I said, implementation is the problem. So, I won’t say that government is not helping. They are doing their best. If you look at the policies, they are favourable.

How’s government, especially the legislature and the executive, patronizing your company based on the ‘buy Nigeria, grow Naira’ mantra?

Didn’t you see what happened at the National Assembly recently? They decided to buy Toyota cars made in Japan, that they are too big to drive made in Nigeria cars. Didn’t you hear it in the news?

…I heard it. I also heard that it was the member representing you that objected to buying your vehicle…

I don’t know about that. Whatever the person representing me said doesn’t matter to me. All I know is that was the decision of the National Assembly. Anything all of them agreed is what they will do. You can’t tag it to somebody representing me because he’s just one person and he can’t decide for the entire lawmakers. So, if the NASS decides anything, he can’t stop them.

What would you say has been your major challenge in this business?

Well, in manufacturing, there are a lot of challenges. But when you know that such challenges would come, you make provisions for them because, if you don’t have space to accommodate any challenge, one or two problems will force you to close shop. Any manufacturer will tell you about energy or electricity situation in the country.

When we were starting the factory, we knew we had such problem. So, we planned it in such a way that power situation will not affect us. There was a time we didn’t use electricity from the national grid for four years. I ran generator for that four years.

The issue was that the electricity company was over-charging me. They were giving me more bills than what I was supposed to pay because it was based on estimated billing. They failed to realise that we have engineers here who can calculate what we use. We asked them to install prepaid meter for us but they refused. So when they wanted to act smart, we wrote them officially to disconnect us.

We bought four different sizes of generating sets for the factory according to what we were doing then. We were running the generators eight hours each everyday for four years until the electricity company agreed to install a prepaid meter for us because they found out that they were losing. So they brought prepaid meter for us and we paid. So, electricity has been our major challenge but we made provisions from the outset to accommodate it.

Another major challenge is scarce foreign exchange. It has become increasingly difficult to access foreign exchange to import some of the components we use. How can you be telling the President that you need foreign exchange? I know from his speeches, he wants manufacturers to get but some of us don’t get. We find it difficult to access foreign exchange, we don’t get at all. How can you be doing black market to do manufacturing? It is difficult. That’s why we are focusing more on export now to get foreign exchange to enable us to continue to run the factory.

What about the South-East governors, do they patronise you as one of their own?

Well, I will say that they are doing their best and even the Federal Government is doing its best in patronizing us. However, if all the South-East governors are like that of Imo, then, we don’t have problems. The present governor is number one in implementing the local content. He deserves an award for that. Go to Imo, all the vehicles they are using are made in Nigeria. So Imo has got somebody in the governor who knows what’s good to do and we appreciate him for that.

Have you considered partnering or merging with known foreign vehicle manufacturers?

Well, most of them want me to partner or merge with them. Yes, we are looking into it. I’m going to open a new factory in Imo in partnership with foreign companies. I believe the partnership will help us to develop motor manufacturing on a bigger scale in Nigeria
.

Is Imo government supporting you in that project?

Yes, Imo State government has indicated interest and they are supporting us. So, with my foreign partners, we will work together and develop it there.

Talking about siting of factory, what informed your choice of siting your factories in the South-East instead of the commercial city of Lagos?

Commercial city of Lagos is too busy. I want where there will be space for manufacturing. I’m also looking at the proximity with my other companies because, the way our companies were set up, factory A can produce something for factory B and vice versa. Another reason is for easy communications and management. I’m not interested in any particular region, be it South-East, South-West or North. It doesn’t matter to me. After all, I’m from Anambra but I have only one factory in Anambra, I have one in Enugu and will soon have one in Imo and Edo. Gradually, we’ll reach there.

Nigeria’s first indigenous vehicle manufacturing company, Innoson Motors’ G40 SUV.
Do you have any interest to contest for political posts such as President, governor?

Let me make it clear here that I am not a politician and I’m not interested in politics. I am a manufacturer. I will be an industrialist until I become weak. When I grow old I go home and retire. I don’t have time for politics. There are people who are politicians, let them continue with their politics. And as for the 2023 presidential election, I’m not interested in who is coming out. When the time comes, I’ll make a choice among those contesting. And I don’t know who I will vote for; it depends on who comes out

Umahi to IGP: I don’t know who smuggled us to Awka, remove us from Zone 13

Governor David Umahi of Ebonyi State has asked Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu to remove Ebonyi from the newly created zone 13 located at Ukpor in Anambra State.
He added that the State was comfortable remaining in zone 9.

“I don’t know who smuggled us to Awka; I have no idea, we cannot be in Awka,” Umahi said.
He spoke while inaugurating the Ebonyi State Community Policing Advisory Committees at Ecumenical centre Abakaliki.

“I have a little disagreement with the AIG, Zone 13 in Awka; we cannot belong to Awka. You must know your level to succeed in life. I moved our people from Calabar into Umuahia, I don’t know who smuggled us back to Awka; I have no idea, we cannot be in Awka.

“One, the roads; two, insecurity, our people going there; three, is so much money around that place, we don’t have. Let us be in Umuahia with our little money. We are in Umuahia, we cannot go to Nnewi,” he said.

Governor Umahi further decried the increasing insecurity in the State and urged security agencies to brace up.

“Police is more active in the day than in the night. CP, I want to see SARS in the night the much I see them during the day. I want to see the Safer Highway in the night and see them in the day; not that they have not done very well, but we have to remain the best.”

PoliticsCheck The State With The Lowest Unemployment rate In Nigeria According To NBS by Ctorch(op): 9:22pm On Aug 14, 2020
The state with the lowest unemployment rate in Nigeria is Anambra State with 13.1% out of the total working population of 2.25 million people. The state was 37 out of 37 states in the ranking of unemployment by state.

Nigeria’s unemployment rate has now gotten to 27 per cent in the second quarter of 2020, a move from 23.1 per cent reported in the third quarter of 2018.

The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) disclosed this in its ‘Labor Force Statistics: Unemployment and Underemployment Report’ released on Friday.

“For the period under review, Q2 2020, the unemployment rate among young people (15-34 years) was 34.9 per cent, up from 29.7 per cent, while the rate of underemployment for the same age group rose to 28.2 per cent from 25.7 per cent in Q3 2018,” the NBS report said. “These rates were the highest when compared to other age groupings.”

According to the NBS, the number of persons in the economically active age (15 – 64 years), jumped from 115,492,969 in Q3 2018 to 116,871,186 in Q2 2020.

“The number of persons in the labour force (i.e. people within ages 15 -64, who are able and willing to work) was estimated to be 80,291,894,” it said.

This was 11.3 per cent less than the number of persons in Q3 2018.

“Of this number, those within the age bracket of 25-34 were highest, with 23,328,460 or 29.1 per cent of the labour force,” it added.

A further peep into the latest NBS unemployment data indicated that the number of employed people in Q2 2020 slumped by 15.8 per cent to 58,527,276 when placed side by side with that of Q3 2018.

“Of this number, 35,585,274 were full-time employed (i.e. worked 40+ hours per week), while 22,942,003 were underemployed (i.e. working between 20-29 hours per week),” the report revealed.

At 48.7 per cent, Imo State has the highest unemployment rate in the country and is trailed by Akwa-Ibom State (45.2 per cent) and Rivers State (43.7 per cent).

Anambra State, however, has the lowest unemployment rate in the nation – 17 per cent.

“For underemployment, the state which recorded the highest rate was Zamfara with 43.7 per cent, while Anambra State recorded the lowest underemployment rate, with 17 per cent in Q2 2020,” the agency said.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the NBS said: “2,736,076 did not do any work in the last seven days preceding the survey due to the lockdown but had secure jobs to return to after the lockdown.”

PoliticsPeter Obis' Action When 60 Traditional Rulers Travelled Without Approval by Ctorch(op): 3:20pm On Aug 14, 2020
Throwback: Peter Obis' action when 60 traditional rulers travelled without state government approval

In 2013, on 20th April, about 60 traditional rulers from Anambra state attended a wedding ceremony in Lagos on the invitation of Ifeanyi Ubah (Capital Oil).
The wedding was that of Ubah's younger sister, Vivian Uju at Assumpta Catholic Church Falomo, Ikoyi, Lagos.
After the weeding, Ifeanyi Ubah hosted the Igwes and took them to facility tours of his investments in Lagos. He equally gifted them with $3,000 each.
This happened when Ifeanyi Ubah was looking for an endorsement before governorship election. Election was near, scheming was on and Obi was the Governor in a different camp with Ubah.
When these traditional rulers came back from Lagos, Peter Obi organized a seminar for them in their Secretariat in government house, blamed them for traveling without approval, he didn't suspend them.
He was quoted as saying if himself as governor cannot travel outside the country without informing Mr. President.

Two months later, in June,2013, Peter Obi donated Innoson SUV's to all traditional rulers in Anambra State, including those who received 3000 dollars from Ifeanyi Ubah.
He may have been influenced by Ifeanyi Ubah's generosity to ndi igwe and had to manage the crisis. His media aids and advisers navigated him away from the trouble.
Today, Election scheming is on and we should be guided in advising Government as community leaders and opinion moulders.

The actions or inactions of the incumbent may affect us in many ways, therefore if given opportunity, make peace with the suspended traditional rulers with the Governor instead of criticism.
Very important, support your Igwe, pay tributes to them. Some of the igwe who went to Arthur Eze may not have been there because of politics.

Travel5 Forbidden Places You Are Not Allowed To Visit by Ctorch(op): 1:56pm On Aug 09, 2020
there are some places that are forbidden to visitors except you’re a researcher or a daredevil willing to part with your health or life in some cases.

Listed below are 5 forbidden places that you should take off your travel bucket list:

1 North Sentinel Island

North Sentinel Island is one of the Andaman Islands, in the Bay of Bengal. The heavily forested island is surrounded by coral reefs and lacks natural harbours.

But finding a harbour should be the least of your worries as you may not make it to the shore because the island is home to the Sentinelese, an indigenous people in voluntary isolation who have rejected, often violently, any contact with the outside world. They are among the last tribal people to remain virtually untouched by modern civilisation.

In January 2006, two fishermen fishing illegally in prohibited waters were killed by the Sentinelese when their boat drifted too close to the island. In November 2018, John Allen Chau, a 26-year-old US missionary was killed during an illegal trip to the restricted island, planning to preach Christianity to the Sentinelese.

The area is patrolled by the Indian Navy.

2 Snake Island

The official name of this infamous island off the coast of Brazil is Ilha da Queimada Grande.

The island is thought to have a population of about 430,000 snakes. However, recent estimates are much lower. According to some estimates, there is one snake in each square meter of the island. The island is the only home of the critically endangered, venomous Bothrops insularis (golden lancehead pit viper), one of the deadliest snakes in the world.

Queimada Grande is closed to the public to protect both people and the snake population; access is only available to the Brazilian Navy and selected researchers vetted by the Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation, the Brazilian federal conservation unit.

3 Svalbard Global Seed Vault

The Svalbard Global Seed Vault is a secure seed bank on the Norwegian island of Spitsbergen.

The seed bank’s mission is to provide a safety net in the event of accidental loss of diversity in traditional genebanks due to mismanagement, accident, equipment failures, funding cuts, natural disasters, regional or global catastrophe.

The seed vault functions like a safe deposit box in a bank. The bank owns the building and the depositor owns the contents of his or her box. The 11,000-square-foot facility is protected by highly advanced security systems and access is strictly limited to a handful of employees.

4 Poveglia Island

Poveglia is a small island located between Venice and Lido in the Venetian Lagoon, northern Italy.

For more than 100 years beginning in 1776, the island was used as a quarantine station for those suffering the plague and other diseases, and later as a mental hospital. The mental hospital closed in 1968, and the island has been vacant since.

Poveglia has long been considered one of the most haunted places on earth. Rumour has it that the ghosts of plague victims, war victims, and the ghost of a murderous asylum doctor roam the decaying grounds.

5 Area 51

Area 51 is the common name of a highly classified United States Air Force (USAF) facility located in Nevada, United States.

Details of the facility’s operations are not publicly known, but the USAF says that it is an open training range, and it most likely supports the development and testing of experimental aircraft and weapons systems.

The intense secrecy surrounding the base has made it the frequent subject of conspiracy theories.

Access to Area 51 is completely prohibited, however, the area surrounding the facility is a popular tourist destination for alien enthusiasts.

PoliticsGovernor Wike Condemns Involvement Of Judicial Officers In Politics. by Ctorch(op): 7:51pm On Aug 03, 2020
GOVERNOR WIKE CONDEMNS INVOLVEMENT OF JUDICIAL OFFICERS IN POLITICS.
Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike has decried the involvement of some judicial officers in partisan politics.
According to him, this has manifested through comments, special affiliations, body language and palpable commitments.
Governor Wike was speaking at the handing over of 41 Sport Utility Vehicles to Judges in the State Judiciary as well as seven Judges of the State origin serving in the Federal Judicial Service.
"Adjudication and politics are incompatible extremes hence, no judge can be both and legitimately claim to be an independent and impartial adjudicator.
"Heads of the country's judicial system should positively address the identifiable weaknesses and processes that have continued to create room for judicial corruption.
"The transformation agenda in the state judiciary under my administration is based on the fact that we believe that judges and magistrates who toil on a daily basis to dispense justice and advance societal peace need to be taken care of.
"Therefore, the rule of law, independence of the judiciary and effective delivery of justice are on the top priority of my administration.
"Even though my administration inherited a judiciary that was completely neglected and judicial officers were treated with disdain, we made a commitment to change the unfortunate narrative", he said.
The governor noted that only a dishonest character would deny the pragmatic and purposeful attention his administration brought to all facets of the state judicial system in the last five years.
He announced the completion of 20 purpose-built luxury and fully furnished Judges Quarters built in fulfilment of his administration's policy of providing decent life- long accommodation for all Judges in the State.
Governor Wike also said that government would relocate judges who are currently living at highly commercialised environments to befitting secured and serene locations.
He stated that there should be no room for corruption and indulgence among judges taking into cognizance the level of incentives provided for them.
The governor urged the judges to reciprocate government's gesture by maintaining the highest sense of responsibility, integrity and productivity in discharging their duties.
In her remarks, the State Chief Judge, Justice Adanma Iyaye - Lamikanra noted that Governor Wike has made the state judiciary the envy of other judiciaries in the country in terms of infrastructure and technology.
Justice Lamikanra expressed the gratitude of the State Judiciary to the governor for the gesture that would enhance the welfare of judges.
Also speaking, the State Attorney and Commissioner for Justice, Prof. Zaccheus Adangor said the presentation of the official vehicles to the judges was a demonstration of the implementation of one of the core values of the NEW Rivers Vision.

HealthSanwo-olu, NCDC Give Different Figures On Lagos’ COVID-19 Situation by Ctorch(op): 8:52am On Aug 03, 2020
Lagos Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, and the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control have given different statistics for the number of COVID-19 cases, recoveries and deaths in the state.

The NCDC statistics is also different in many respects from that supplied by the Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi.

According to the NCDC statistics dated July 31, 2020 and titled, ‘COVID-19 SITUATION REPORT 154, Friday, 31ST July 2020,” Lagos had 15,121 total confirmed cases, 2,148 discharged cases and 192 deaths.

The report also listed 78 new cases and three newly discharged patients as of July 31, 2020.

Again, NCDC states in the July 31 document that Lagos had 12,781 total active COVID cases.

The NCDC statistics is different from the one stated by Governor Sanwo-Olu for the same time frame, however.

At a Press briefing by Governor Sanwo-Olu on Saturday, as reported by the News Agency of Nigeria, he was quoted to have said, “As of July 31, Lagos State has had a total of 15,150 confirmed cases of COVID-19, with 10,835 persons who had recovered and [had been] discharged.

“We have sadly lost 194 persons to the virus.

“This leaves us with 1,813 active cases in community and 96 under management across various isolation centres in the state.”

The governor spoke at the Lagos House, Marina, on Saturday, August 1, 2020, while addressing Lagosians on the gradual easing of COVID-19 lockdown, NAN reported.

In its Sunday, August 2 update on national COVID-19 cases uploaded at 10:24am on its website, NCDC gave Lagos’ statistics as 15,186 lab confirmed COVID-19 cases, 12,846 as number of cases on admission, 2,148 discharged and 192 deaths.

The NCDC statistics gives Lagos a total of 15,186 out of the national 43,537 total confirmed COVID-19 cases.

In terms of the total number of 20,087 discharged COVID-19 cases nationally, Lagos has discharged 2,148, according to NCDC.

This is nowhere near Sanwo-Olu’s stated 10,835 “recovered and discharged” patients in the state, as NAN had stated.

IslamSulaiman Njoku’s Muslim Family In Imo Celebrates Eid In An Unusual Style by Ctorch(op): 9:58am On Jul 31, 2020
How an Ibo family plans to celebrate an unusual Eid

Like other Muslims across the globe, Alhaji Sulaiman Njoku’s family of four is set for the activities marking this year’s Eid al-Adha, or Festival of Sacrifice, on which Muslims are expected to slaughter sacrificial animals.

Being the Chief Imam of Imo, the head of the family has the responsibility of providing spiritual guidance to other Muslims across the state for which he has to adequately prepare.

But this is an unusual day – instead of the open ground at Nekede or that at Amausa, the Eid prayers are taking place inside mosques, because of the coronavirus pandemic.

“We’re going to pray in the mosques, according to the guidelines on COVID-19, especially on social distancing and wearing of face masks”, he disclosed.

Past celebrations
This is not how Eid used to be celebrated, however.
“Eid was celebrated with pomp and pageantry, just as you celebrate Christmas”, says Imam Njoku, adding, “It was marked with all types of festivities, eating, drinking, sharing and visiting friends.

“But today all that is gone. We have to be careful how we celebrate so as not to go against the protocols on COVID-19. This year, there will be no festivities.”

Being an imam

With three children – two girls and a boy – Imam Njoku’s family is very small, compared to that of his father, Alhaji Yusuf Njoku.

The elder Njoku, who died in February 1995, had three wives and 14 children.

He lived in Kano, where he married his first wife, a Fulani lady.

Imam Sulaiman Njoku’s mother, who hails from Umuevu Umuokrika in Mbaise, Imo state, was his father’s second wife.

The Imo State Muslim Council nominated Imam Njoku Chief Imam following the death of Alhaji Dauda Onyeagocha late last year.

Apart from leading prayers, especially the Friday and Eid prayers, he is also a member of the Muslim Council of Imo State.

Home celebration

After the Eid prayer, Imam Njoku’s family will retire home where, together with his siblings, they will celebrate and entertain those friends that will come around.

“Even President Muhammadu Buhari barred [people from] visiting Aso Rock during [the last Eid].

“So we should have a low-key celebration to reflect the mood of the times.

He added that, “As a family, we will celebrate Insha Allah, according to what Allah has provided. The aim is to celebrate and thank Allah for keeping us alive.”

Press Statement
BRACED Union Counters Amaechi's Claim That Ikwerres Are Igbos
The BRACED Union, an umbrella group of Bayelsa, Rivers, Akwa-Ibom, Cross River, Edo and Delta States of the Niger Delta Region of Nigeria has countered the claim recently made by the Minister of Transport, Rt. Hon. Rotimi Amaechi that the people of Ikwerre in Rivers State are Igbos by origin.
The group in a statement endorsed by its National President, High Chief Monday Wehere is in sharp disagreement with such assumption by Amaechi, admonishing him not to bring the people of South-South into the unfavourable Nigerian political climate for personal interest.
The statement said that Amaechi in the first instance has no locus standing to speak on behalf of the Ikwerre people or the South-South region. The group believes that Amaechi has not attained that status of a rallying figure no matter the level he has climbed to in politics.
According to the statement, "History has it that in the early nineties, the white man was looking for labourers and so they approached the Ikwerres and their surrounding neighbours of Kalabari, Okrika and Eleme who flatly refused them for labour. The white man therefore, penetrated the Igbo hinterlands and recruited very willing labourers. And that was the beginning of the Igbo man's adventure in Ikwerre land. However, the administrative arrangements of the white man wrongly posited the Ikwerre and other peoples of Southern Nigeria into the Eastern region, largely dominated by the Igbos.
"So to now claim that the Ikwerres are Igbos because of communal proximity and mix-up is an aberration. As an Ikwerre man, that statement was least expected from Rotimi Amaechi who should know better where the Ikwerre man stands in terms of origin and root. But in case he doesn't know or pretends not to know, he should consult history gurus from Ikwerre rather than throwing up political tantrums to score a cheap one", the statement read in parts.
In addition, the group insisted that as the mouthpiece of the South-South people in terms of advocacy for cultural renaissance, progressive reorientation, building of capacity for inter-BRACED States economic growth and development, it would continue to speak for and protect the interest of the people of the BRACED States.
"We cannot be hoodwinked by political gimmicks. We know who we are, and we are resolute in achieving our own identity independently", the statement further averred.
