Setting Records Straight: Benin and Yoruba Historical wars(Battle of supremacy)

The first edition of this article was titled, “Yoruba and Benin Kingdom: The Missing Gap of History”, following the statement credited to Oba Ereduwa OmoN'oba Iku Opolopolo, that the Yoruba race originated from Benin Kingdom, though rich in details and calls for re-examination by historians of high repute from all the Nigerian universities and recognized institutions not from uneducated and bias sources of chambers or shrines of some Obas or traditional rulers as presently being envisaged or contemplated. The statement from Ooni of Ife disputing the fact of Oba of Benin was also strong enough, but more mythological and also capable of influencing some academic exercises. The statement from the two kings and the follow up from Oba of Lagos and host of others had generated lots of discussion worldwide but some questions still remain unanswered. The second publication was titled: “Ile Ife: The Final Resting Place of History”. In doing further research, I will now title my little contribution: "Yoruba and Benin Kingdom: Classical Historical 'War' of Supremacy."

Let us start our excursion to history with some indisputable records regarding the supremacy of Yoruba and by extension, Ile-Ife, over Benin Kingdom. I quote thus: "In 1916, when Aguobasimi was installed as Oba of Benin in place of his father who died in Calabar while on exile, and the royal messengers of the then Ooni of Ife - Oba Ademiluyi(aka Lawarikan), went to him after a series of earnest requests, they delivered Ooni's message thus: "YOUR FATHER GREETS YOU." (See Nigerian National Archives: Oyo Prof. 1, File 133, 24th May, 1916). And listen to this: "The place called "Orun-Oba-Ado Bini" is the site from where great Oranmiyan set out to found the Yoruba Dynasty in Benin, and it is to here that the heads of the Kings of Benin were brought for burial.

Yoruba Kingdoms - Benin and Ife
In 1975 the Republic of Dahomey changed its name to the Republic of Benin, after the Bight of Benin ["Where few come out but many go in”], which in turn was named after the Benin Empire, a powerful entity that existed from 1440 to 1897 in what is today Nigeria. "Benin" is a Portuguese corruption of "Ubinu," the administrative center of the Empire, which is today called Benin City, capital of Edo State. Dahomey's rechristening in 1975 caused no end of confusion ever since, so to clarify things: Benin City (the historical Benin Empire) is approximately 250 miles east of Porto Novo, capital of the present-day Republic of Benin. The two entities have no historical connection whatsoever.

The Yoruba kingdoms of Benin and Ife sprang up between the 11th and 12th centuries. The present-day Benin monarch declared his ancestry from Oranmiyan through Ekaladerhan and direct to the Ogiso dynasty. The statement made by the Ooni of Ife debunked the Oba of Benin's declaration of the ancestry of Benin Kings, insisting that Benin was one of the kingdoms founded by Oduduwa who descended from heaven to Ile-Ife with four hundred deities.

Benin Kingdom in Edo is Yoruba territory — Ooni of Ife, Adeyeye Ogunwusi

The Ooni of Ife, Adeyeye Ogunwusi, on Tuesday said Benin Kingdom in Edo State remained part of the expansive Yoruba race, a pronouncement that may spark fresh rivalry and altercation between people of the two ancient kingdoms.

The monarch made the comment in reaction to a statement credited to the palace of the Oba of Benin challenging the claim by the Alake of Egbaland, Adedotun Gbadebo, that the Ooni of Ife remained the pre-eminent spiritual leader in Yorubaland and environs.

Oba Ogunwusi, via a statement by his Director of Media and Public Affairs, Moses Olafare, made available to PREMIUM TIMES, said he was not interested in any supremacy battle with anyone but that he would continue to put the records straight and avoid distortion of history from any quarters.

The monarch said going by historical evidence detailing the Oduduwa lineage, Benin Kingdom remained part and parcel of Oduduwa House.

“We in Oduduwa land have always seen and regarded our people in Benin kingdom as part and parcel of Oduduwa House. They are our brothers and sisters, coupled with historical facts to back up this position,” Ooni Ogunwusi said.

“The statement credited to the Alake of Egbaland, did not emanate from us but the reality is that as a highly experienced and well informed monarch, Kabiyesi Alake, who is a bonafide Oodua descendant is entitled to his opinion based on his knowledge and understanding of history,” the Ooni said.

“Let me emphasize for the umpteenth time that Kabiyesi Ooni is less concerned over any supremacy hullabaloo. He is only interest for now in how the sacred throne of Oduduwa can explore measures through which the collective interest and genuine unity among Yoruba and other tribes within the larger House of Oduduwa can be enhanced.

“This informed his resolve to build bridges of harmony among Yourba Obas. I am resolutely committed to how Yoruba ethnic group can restore its glory and pride of position among other ethnic inclinations in Nigeria and don’t want to be dragged into supremacy contest or join issues with anybody.”

The traditional ruler said he recalled that about six years ago, attempt was made by some people to upturn history during the launch of a book titled: I REMAIN SIR, YOUR OBEDIENT SERVANT, which he said stood historical facts on its head.

Oba Ogunwusi stated that If the position espoused by the Oba of Benin Palace in the media “is aimed at distancing our people in Benin from the South West and Yoruba, so be it.”

He however added, “We still identify with them as our kinsmen, regardless of the attempt to change the course of history.”

The Alake had, while hosting the Oba Ogunwusi in his palace on February 7, rated the Ooni as the number one monarch in Yorubaland and other territories considered part of the Oduduwa House.

In his rating, Oba Gbadebo said Oba Ogunwusi was number one of the five principal Obas in Yorubaland, followed by the Alaafin of Oyo, then by the Oba of Benin (in third position), the Alake of Egbaland (fourth) and the Awujale of Ijebuland (fifth).

But in a swift reaction on Tuesday, the Esogban of Benin and Odionwere of the Kingdom, David Edebiri, rejected the ranking, saying the Ooni of Ife was a son of the Oba of Benin and that the Oba of Benin stool has no relationship with the Yoruba race.

The Esogban said, “We wanted to discard this report as something that was not necessary at all. We do not see how the Alake of Egbaland suddenly woke up to think that the Oba of Benin is also a Yoruba Oba.

“There is no basis for such classification; Oba of Benin has nothing to do with the Yoruba Obas. It is simply unnecessary, unless they simply want to stir up an unnecessary controversy.

“We are not in Yorubaland. To be frank, it is because many of them are not willing to come up with the truth, the word Oba is alien to Yoruba monarchy; it is not part of their title from time immemorial.

“For instance, the one they call the Oba of Lagos, these are recent adaptations. In the 50s, there was no Oba of Lagos, what we had was the Eleko of Eko. That is the title of the King there. In Ibadan, you have the Olu Ibadan. You come to Abeokuta, you have the Alake of Egba land. You come to Oyo, you have the Alaafin of Oyo. In Ilesha, you have the Owa-Obokun of IIesha. So no Yoruba monarch had as part of his titles the word Oba except the Oba of Benin.

“That word Oba is indigenous to Benin. It is only in recent times you find everybody bearing Oba. When the Western Regional conference of traditional rulers took place in Benin City in 1942, go and check the attendance, there was no other monarch in the whole of the Western Region then that bore the title of Oba, except the Oba of Benin.

“So it is an unnecessary excursion, an unnecessary attempt to turn history upside down by the Alake by classifying the Oba of Benin as third in the hierarchy of kings.

“Our own traditional history says that the Ooni of Ife was a Benin Prince who wandered from here to Ife, settled there and became the ruler there. That is the position, if they don’t know, they should send people here; we will teach them.

“We will show them landmarks. So this is unnecessary misrepresentation of history. Maybe the Alake wanted to mention a different place and not Benin.

“The monarchical rulership in this part of the world started from Benin during the era of the Ogisos. It was the son of the last Ogiso, Owodo, that wandered from here to Ife and he became a ruler there, carrying everything about the Benin monarchical system to that place. There is no basis for such classification.

“The Ooni of Ife, by historical facts, is a son of the Oba of Benin, so they are not in the same class. The Oba of Benin is the only one that answers Oba, the rest don’t. But today, we hear Oba here and there, they are all recent adaptations. I am saying categorically that the word Oba is indigenous to Benin and not to Yoruba nation.”

Yoruba and Benin Kingdom: Ile Ife The Final Resting Place of History

Conclusion.

Alternatively, can we write off Alafin of Oyo from this discussion because his descendant failed to head the thrown at Ile Ife when Oranmiyan was called? No. Some will say since he was buried at Ife to symbolize his rights to the thrown or why did all his brothers fail to challenge his right to the Ife thrown if he indeed was the last born maybe, that part of history was right that Oranmiyan was the first born not the last as mentioned by Oba of Benin. They’re so many unanswered questions of history. The answer is not if we will offend ourselves or change the place of Edo’s or Yoruba in history but who we are and where we were coming from. It is often said that it is a taboo to bury a king in exile. Ile Ife from all indications and by having the heads of all the late kings of Benin and that of Oranmiyan himself buried at Ile Ife to this writer is the source of Edos and Yoruba and this fact must not be distorted with sentiments.

Germany sends China £130billion bill for 'coronavirus damages' – sparks fury in Beijing

GERMANY has rattled China after joining the UK, France and the US in a rare attack, after Berlin called out Beijing's responsibility for the global pandemic and even issued a £130bn invoice.
By OLI SMITH
Germany has sparked outrage in China after a major newspaper put together a £130bn invoice that Beijing "owes" Berlin following the impact of the coronavirus pandemic. Germany has followed France, the UK and the US in directing its coronavirus anger at China, where the virus originated. Recent attacks come amid findings that Beijing appeared to cover up the true scale of the crisis, as the source of the outbreak remains a mystery.
On Saturday, Donald Trump warned that China should face consequences if it was “knowingly responsible” for unleashing the coronavirus pandemic.
President Trump told reporters: "It could have been stopped in China before it started and it wasn’t, and the whole world is suffering because of it.

If it was a mistake, a mistake is a mistake. But if they were knowingly responsible, then there should be consequences.

He said the Chinese were “embarrassed” and the question was whether what happened with the coronavirus was “a mistake that got out of control, or was it done deliberately?”

President Trump and his senior aides have repeatedly accused China of lacking transparency.

This week the city of Wuhan, where the outbreak started, revised its number of fatalities by with a sudden 50% jump in the figure.

The UK has joined US intelligence officials in investigating claims that the virus originated in a Wuhan virus lab and not a wet market.

A bombshell op-ed this week in Germany's largest tabloid newspaper, Bild, joined this outrage by drawing up an itemised invoice for €149bn (£130b).

The list includes a €27 billion charge for lost tourism revenue, up to €7.2 billion for the German film industry, a million euros an hour for German airline Lufthansa and €50 billion for German small businesses.

Bild calculated that this amounts to €1,784 (£1,550) per person if Germany's GDP falls by 4.2 percent, under the title "What China owes us."

China responded by claiming the invoice "stirs up xenophobia and nationalism".

TravelAir Peace Provides Food Items For Hundreds Of Less Privileged In Makoko, Ajegunl by Ctorch(op): 6:29pm On Apr 18, 2020
COVID-19 Air Peace provides food items for hundreds of less privileged in Makoko, Ajegunle, Lagos

Air Peace on Friday, April 17,2020, distributed food items to many less privileged families in different areas in Sabo Makoko in Yaba and Ajegunle areas of Lagos to help in cushioning the effect of the restriction order as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The airline’s officials gave out bags of rice, cartons of noodles and loaves of bread to hundreds of people whose sources of livelihood have been adversely affected by the COVID-19 lockdown aimed at curtailing the spread of the pandemic that has stifled the global economy.

The Chairman, Air Peace, Mr. Allen Onyema, who was on hand to help in the distribution stated that the airline is aware that the current lockdown has made it very difficult for many Nigerians to eke out a living as they are compelled by government directive to stay at home, so as to curtail the spread of Coronavirus.

He said that the initiative to give out food items was inspired by the need to provide succour to the less privileged many of whom survive on daily earning from their work but can no longer work due to the stay at home policy.

“What we have done is our own way of touching the lives of the people directly. That’s why we came to Makoko, which is populated by very indigent people. When we leave here now, we are going to Ajegunle. We are providing them bags of rice and cartons of noodles. This large turnout of people is a witness to the fact that there is hunger. We cannot leave the care for the people to government alone. The private sector must be involved in this. If you have two million naira in your house, use N200,000 to help people around you. If you have one million, use N100,000 to help people. We are living in extraordinary times.

“One way or another, let us take positives from the Coronavirus situation. Now, people have discovered that wealth is nothing because you cannot take this money to your grave. So you must do anything you can to touch the lives of people around you. My happiness will not be complete if people around me do not benefit from my prosperity,” Onyema said.

Elated by Air Peace good gestures, the Bale of Okira Olayeni located in Ajegunle, Chief Taiwo Hassan Olayeni, thanked the company and said that this is the kind of support people expect from corporate organisations and expressed gratitude to the airline.

“I am very happy that the company came to our area to feed us. We have been expecting this gesture from corporate organisations for over three weeks now. I am very happy for Air Peace and I pray that God will continue to prosper the company. This is a very happy thing for me. I am so happy that they selected my community to benefit from their good gesture so I don’t know how I can thank the company. But I know that God will continue to prosper Air Peace and those that will benefit from the company’s kindness,” he said.

Politics"That Igbo Boy"- Wike To Rivers APC Chieftain Chief Chukwuemeka Eze by Ctorch(op): 9:29pm On Apr 17, 2020
The All Progressives Congress, APC, in Rivers State has reacted to Governor Nyesom Wike’s Friday’s broadcast to the State.

The party insinuated that Wike’s broadcast, threats and name-calling before the world has further exposed his governance style.

Wike had, among other things, said he would not allow anyone from Abuja give him directives in Rivers, adding that he was duly elected by the people.

Wike also attacked some chieftains of the APC namely, Chief Eze Chukwuema Eze and Chris Finebone.

The governor had also threatened to declare a total lockdown on the state should the people continue to flout his directives on the closure of markets and other business places.

He had also threatened companies in the State who failed to contribute towards the state COVID-19 fight.

Reacting to the Governor’s speech, Spokesperson for the APC in Rivers State, Chris Finebone, said the broadcast has further exposed the Governor.

Finebone said it would be a waste of adjectives to try to qualify the briefing and the governor’s performance, adding that the world saw and heard him.

The APC’s mouthpiece said this in a statement made available to DAILY POST on Friday.

He said, “In my decision not to join issues with anyone or the Rivers State Government on COVID-19 matters, I will not respond to the issues raised by Gov. Nyesom Wike in his press briefing today.

“I am convinced that to all those who either were present at the briefing or watched it on TV, or even those who listened on the radio, the governor’s demeanour and utterances before the world during the briefing have sufficiently provided an eloquent response to his briefing.

“Therefore, it will be a waste of adjectives to try to qualify the briefing and the governor’s performance. The world saw and heard him.

“I am very sure that the corporate organisations he threatened with reprisal actions if they did not donate to the state COVID-19 fund can sufficiently speak for themselves.

“However, I feel sad that the governor climbed down from the high office of governor to engage in name-calling and insult.

“The governor did not need to have taken it personal with me and Chief Eze Chukwuemeka Eze by referring to Chief Eze as that ‘Ibo boy’. In Africa, respect is given to age and I am sure that Chief Eze is years older than the governor.

“In any case, I and Chief Eze never, directly or indirectly under any circumstances, canvassed, solicited or ever will accept anything under the leprous Wike government or his party in Rivers State.”

PoliticsI’m Prepared For Exxonmobil – Wike by Ctorch(op): 5:55pm On Apr 17, 2020
Rivers state Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, Friday said he is fully prepared for legal battle against ExxonMobil.

Wike, who spoke while addressing a press conference at Government House, Port Harcourt, opined that Rivers state cannot leave corporate bodies who violated the state’s lockdown order to go free, whereas, petty traders like Akara and Groundnut sellers are charged to court for same violation.

Reassuring his people of his unflinching commitment in protecting lives and properties, Wike said he does not take orders from anybody, noting that he would do everything to stem the spread of coronavirus in the state.

Recall that about 22 offshore staff of Exxon Mobil were Thursday night arrested by Rivers State Government for illegally entering the state amidst lockdown order.

Report has it that 21 of the workers are members of the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria, PENGASSAN, while the remaining staff is the company’s Chief Security Officer, CSO.

Reacting, Wike said; “Yesterday, it was ExxonMobil that brought 22 people into Rivers State. Although, service commanders, including the Commissioner of Police, are pleading that we should allow them to return to Uyo. I know their predicament because they take orders from Abuja.

“But, this one, I will fight this one. I have told the Attorney-General to prepare; we are going to Court against them. We will fight this fight legally. ExxonMobil cannot bring in 22 people illegally into Rivers State.

“ExxonMobil does not operate in Rivers State. They only make use of the Onne Port. We are not sure of the health status of the people they brought into the state because they can enter Eleme and Onne communities.

“We cannot leave corporate bodies who are not obeying the laws while akara and groundnut sellers are being charged to Court in Lagos. This ExxonMobil matter will expose those in Abuja. I am ready for them. Rivers State is not a pariah state and we will not be.”

Noo, sister to the deceased, in a social media post, made the announcement.

She said, “We said goodbye to my brother, Gian, on Monday.

"He had COVID-19 combined with underlying health conditions.

"Gian was the smartest and most talented out of all of us: a champion sprinter at school, a poet, an artist, budding engineer, a self-taught guitarist and pianist. But mental health issues limited his life from age 16 onwards.

I took this photo of him a few months ago before he was hospitalised.

“A kind and beautiful soul, always wanting the best for his family, always praying for our future success while being eternally optimistic about his own. And, of course, always loving his music. He leaves a wonderful son, Louis."

Menegian was 50 at the time of his death.

PoliticsAnambra State Govt Mourns Chief Victor Ikwuemesi, Sosoliso Airlines Founder by Ctorch(op): 6:00pm On Apr 15, 2020
Anambra Mourns Chief Victor Ikwuemesi, Sosoliso Airlines Founder
1. The government and people of Anambra State have received the news of the painful exit yesterday in London of Chief Victor Ikwuemesi, a foremost chartered accountant and entrepreneur who came into national limelight in 2000 when he set up the Sosoliso Airlines Ltd to run scheduled domestic passenger services. Chief Ikwuemesi, an indigene of Nkwelle Ogidi, Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State, has become the latest prominent victim of the coronavirus, also known as COVID-19. This highly infectious disease is real. Our people must continue to take precautionary steps to save our place from the contagion.
2. Chief Ikwuemesi was not just a great son of Anambra State but also a worthy Nigerian in the truest son of the expression. His sole purpose for establishing the carrier was to change the sociopolitical landscape of a key component of the Nigerian federation which was unfortunately being schemed out of national affairs.
3. The two airports in the Southeast by 1999 when democratic rule was restored were no longer in use. People travelling from the Southeast to any other part of the country had to go by road, with all the incalculable costs and risks. Rather than thrown up his hands in the air in despair and lament about marginalization, as many of his people are wont to do, Chief Ikwuemesi decided to take the bull by the horn by establishing an airline to reopen the Enugu and Owerri airports. It is instructive enough that Enugu became the headquarters. It is to his credit and foresight that the two airports have remained open ever since.
4. Sosoliso Airlines was flying into Lagos, Abuja and Port Harcourt, apart from Enugu and Owerri. Owing to its acute professionalism, it commanded tremendous customer loyalty. However, on December 10, 2005, its 1145 flight which took off from Abuja with mostly students of Loyola Jesuit College who were going home on holidays crashed at Port Harcourt International Airport. Only one person survived.
5. In its authoritative publication captioned “How blunders and neglect stoked an African tragedy”, The Wall Street Journal, after reviewing reports based on investigations by the Boeing Corporation, the Accident Investigation Bureau of Nigeria and its American counterpart, showed on October 1, 2007, that the crash owed to wind shear, that is, a sudden and dramatic change in the speed and direction of the wind. In other words, it was due to natural forces.
6. Yet, the deaths would have been averted if the drain at the airport had been close; the machine ran into the open drain with force after the pilot had successfully landed the aircraft. Consequently, its dual purpose kerosene (DPK) caught fire. To exacerbate matters, the fire service could not respond robustly, as its officers were to complain of a lack of critical items like hydrant. The result was the avoidable deaths of the passengers and crew.
7. The airline did not recover from the crash. It is regrettable that the authorities at the time did not address themselves to the core issues raised by the Sosoliso accident. They rather engaged in shadowboxing.
8. Chief Ikwuemesi’s place in the history of our people is assured. He devoted the last 20 years to his own spiritual growth and to the development of his Ogidi community which honoured him with the chieftaincy titles of Ezelue and Ebube Ogidi, making him a High Chief and a member of the Royal Cabinet.
9. There are five major things for which Chief Ikwuemesi will be remembered for long: humility even in spite of huge entrepreneurial success; a high savings rate which accelerates business growth; integrity, loyalty and trust in business; commitment to the common good; and the practice of the Aku Lue Uno, or Think Home, philosophy, which this administration has been espousing with evangelical fevour.
10. The people and government of Anambra State commiserate with the Ikwuemesi family and the Royal Cabinet of Ogidi over the death of this noble, selfless and quiet Nigerian. They are in our prayers and thoughts. May God receive Chief Ikwueme’s soul.

CrimeCOVID-19 Lockdown: Ondo Pastor Jumps Fence To Evade Arrest During Easter Service by Ctorch(op): 10:59am On Apr 14, 2020
A mild drama took place in a church in Akure, the Ondo state capital on Easter Sunday as a pastor jumped a fence to escape arrest for flouting government’s ban on religious gathering as part of measures to curb the spread of Covid-19.

Meanwhile, no fewer than five churches in the state were forcefully shut and worshippers dispersed by the state government Special task force set up to enforce compliance.

The shut churches include Christ Apostolic church, Oke-Lisa, TAJEM Irese, Assemblies of God church, Olufoam and Gospel church ministry, Irese road.

Members of the churches that were forcefully shut took to their heels leaving their belongings on arrival of the Task force officials in their churches.

Many claimed they were not aware of the stay at home order of the government but their pastors kept mute when interrogated by the task force officials.

Church service were disrupted by the task force team as worshippers fled into the bush for fear of being arrested.

One of the pastor reportedly locked the members inside the church from outside and conducted Easter service.

It took the task force members tough time to force the door of the church open only to meet the worshippers inside.

The pastor of the church after sensing that he was in trouble tried to jump the church fence to evade arrest but members of the task force who were stationed around the church arrested him before he fled.

The Senior Special assistant to the Governor on Special duties and strategies, Dr Doyin Odebowale who led task force to enforce the closure order frowned at the noncompliance attitude by the clergymen.

Recall that the state government and the leadership of the Christian Association of Nigeria had directed that Christians should observe the celebration at the confines of their homes.

Odebowale has however vowed that the defaulters will be prosecuted.

According to him “The action of the defaulting churches is against the advice of the leadership of the Christian association of Nigeria that Christians should celebrate the Easter Sunday at home as a way of preventing community spread of the Covid 19 with two cases already recorded in the state”.

He said that ” We will prosecute all the pastors that contravened the stay at home order of government because of COVID-19 pandemic.

The crossdresser said that he did nothing wrong to the Blow My Mind crooner to warrant him being blocked from seeing his Instagram posts. James stated that he likes Davido and the mother of his son, Chioma, but he didn't feel good when the singer blocked him.

Noting that Davido rarely blocks people, Folarin said that James may have said something that the singer did not like. The controversial crossdresser explained that he didn't do anything wrong.

He promised to post evidence of his claims on his Instagram page. According to him, he has searched for the singer's username but never found it.

"I have never insulted OBO. OBO is the vibe," James Brown noted

When Davido's friend, Folarin, stated that someone said that Davido may have blocked him because he is in a same-gender relationship, James countered it.

According to him, Davido also said that if he were in a same-gender relationship, he would be walking freely in Nigeria.

CrimeCult Clash, Robberies In Ifo Ogun: Police Arrest Suspects by Ctorch(op): 5:38pm On Apr 12, 2020
The Police in Ogun State have made some arrests in the wake of a crisis that broke out in Ifo local government area of Ogun state as a result of supremacy battle between two rival cult groups.

What seemed a mere clash on Friday, April 10, degenerated into robberies and other criminal activities thus prompting steeper measures to be taken by the Police Force to get the situation under control.

The state’s police command in a bid to nip the crisis at its bud deployed a large number of policemen including SARS, anti cultist unit, anti-kidnapping units as well as conventional policemen were drawn from all adjoining police stations in the area under the command of the Area Commander, ACP Monday Agbonika to restore normalcy and bring the hoodlums to book.

In compliance with the directives of the commissioner of police, the teams moved into the area and embarked on aggressive and intelligence-based patrol of the entire area of Ifo, Owode Ijako, Joju, Ijoko, and Agbado area.

Their efforts yielded positive results as five of the hoodlums were apprehended in the Ijako area of Sango Ota.

Those apprehended include Lucky (m 22), Badmus Sodiq (m’ 27), Showumi Femi (m’ 21), Adeagbo Adewumi (m’ 22) and Agboola Femi (m’ 21).

The patrol team also moved to Winners church area along Idiroko road where another suspect Adekunle Okeoye (m’ 23) was arrested with a brand new locally made short gun loaded with five live cartridges and assorted charms.

Also, the operatives extended their operations to Araromi community in Agbado where three other suspects namely Sulaiman Ogunbiyi, aka Absorver federal, Saminu Adamu and Nasiru Umar were arrested with facemask and assorted charms.

Earlier, ten of the hoodlums had been picked up at various locations in Ifo, Kajola and Ososun areas of Ifo local government by SARS operatives.

Meanwhile, the commissioner of police CP Kenneth Ebrimson has ordered that all the arrested suspects be transferred to special anti-robbery squads SARS for discreet investigation. He equally ordered the continuation of the operation until the last of the hoodlums is arrested.

The CP, therefore, appealed to members of the public not to be unnecessarily apprehensive as the command will continue to do everything within its power to ensure that the good people of Ogun state enjoy adequate security during and after this trying period in the country.

He also enjoined them to reach out to the command through the control room number 08081770416 whenever they are in distress.

HealthCoronavirus: Anambra Index Case Whereabouts Unknown, As State Closes Motor Parks by Ctorch(op): 12:50pm On Apr 11, 2020
The Anambra State Government has ordered the closure of private and public motor parks in the state.

This followed the announcement of the state’s COVID-19 index case on Friday by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control.

Our correspondent learnt that the whereabouts of the index case was unknown as of the time of filing this report.

It was gathered that the index case, who came into the state from Lagos, was in Adazi Nnukwu in the Anaocha Local Government of the state.

“After the result was made known, the patient disappeared”, a source told our correspondent.

But the state government said it had started tracing those who had contact with the index case.

The Commissioner for Transport in the State, Christian Madubuko, said residents who disobey the motor parks closure order would “incur the wrath of the government”.

The statement read in part, “The Ministry of Transport wishes to inform all owners and managers of public and private parks in Anambra State that all parks are hereby closed.

“This is to ensure the containment and spread of coronavirus (COVID-19) in the state.

“Please, all concerned must adhere to this directive with immediate effect. Anyone who goes contrary to this directive will incur the wrath of the government.”

PoliticsCovid:zamfara, kebbi, Katsina Top List Of Poor, Vulnerable Individuals In Nigeria by Ctorch(op): 8:56pm On Apr 10, 2020
The National Social Safety Nets Coordinating Office (NASSCO) has on Friday released the list of the National Social Register of Poor & Vulnerable Households by states, as Zamfara, Kebbi, Katsina recorded the most individuals captured.

The Agency which is saddled with the responsibility of building a database of poor & vulnerable households & coordinates Social Protection programs in Nigeria said the “Register is available to be mined for COVID19 response measures targeting the poor & vulnerable.”

Zamfara State with 1,341,151 captured individuals took the lead compared to total individuals captured in other states. Likewise, Kebbi following behind with 932,460 individuals. Katsina was the third in line with 807,200 people captured

However, clarifying the reason why some states like Ogun State and Ekiti State were missing on the list, NASSCO noted the states were yet to be captured and their respective governments are giving the process full support.

The states yet to be captured like Ogun and Ebonyi are those still in the process of building their register. The govts of both states are giving the process full support,”

According to NASSCO, the National Social Register is “a gateway for registered poor and vulnerable households to access social interventions or welfare packages by the government, philanthropy, NGOs and/or businesses.

“The Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development is using the list to reach the extreme poor with cash transfers.

“The cash transfer is currently paying 1 million poor and vulnerable households.”

The Agency also hinted that the Federal Government will be expanding the number of registered households from 2.6 million to 4 million by June 2020.

COVID-19: Emeka Offor Foundation Donates PEP to Police, Army Medical Corps

Olawale Ajimotokan in Abuja

The Sir Emeka Offor Foundation has donated two 40 feet containers of Personal Protective Equipment (PEP) to the Nigeria Police Force Medical Service and the Nigerian Army Medical Corps.

A statement issued to newsmen in Abuja recently by the Coordinator of the Foundation, Tonny Obi said the consignments were handed over to the beneficiaries on Tuesday in Oraifite, Anambra State.

He revealed that the Federal Medical Centre Yola, Adamawa State also benefitted from a consignment of another container loaded with medical equipment and supplies.

“The consignment contains some of the PEP needed in the fight against COVID-19 and the beneficiaries desire same more than ever before.

The situation presented by the ravaging COVID-19 scourge portends that all hands must be on deck to assist the Government of Nigeria in fighting the scourge. This donation therefore is our modest contribution to the national humanitarian effort.

“The Nigerian Army and the Nigeria Police Force as First Responders deserve the equipment and supplies at this period of national emergency. Those who protect us need protection themselves,” he said.

He also commended the beneficiaries for their strategic intervention in the fight against COVID-19 and urged them to ensure that the equipment and supplies are put to proper use.

The coordinator, who said the Sir Emeka Offor Foundation will continue to make necessary interventions in the health, education and empowerment sectors, thanked partners of the foundation for their invaluable support.

The statement said so far, 11 containers of medical equipment had been delivered to the Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital Awka, National Orthopedic Hospital Enugu, Federal Medical Centre Yenagoa and the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital Maiduguri.

Other benefitting institutions are Gombe State Specialist Hospital; Federal Medical Centre Katsina, Kebbi State Medical Centre Kalgo and Leko Abdurrahman Hospital, Duara (General Hospital) in Katsina State.

Fight Against COVID-19: The Federal Government must leave the Political Route
By Simeon Nwakaudu
The Non-Existent All Progressives Congress ( APC) in Rivers State believes that it can its way into reckoning is to aimlessly criticise Governor Nyesom Ezenwo Wike. They also imagine that they can eke out acceptance if they sabotage the development of Rivers State by derailing the fight against the spread of coronavirus.
Having failed repeatedly in their struggle to undermine Governor Wike, the remnants of Rivers APC have seen the fight to check the spread of coronavirus as their only way to maintain visibility.

Therefore, any action taken by the Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike to protect Rivers people from coronavirus is seen as an excuse for Rivers APC members to criticise the administration and attempt to sabotage the entire State.
From the very beginning, Governor Wike led the way in instituting precautionary measures to check the spread of coronavirus. The proactive measures adopted by Governor Wike have been helpful.
Governor Wike was the first Governor to close the borders. When this action was taken, APC leaders condemned the Governor. They even paid mercenaries to write nasty articles calling the Governor names. When other states emulated the Rivers State Governor, they dropped this condemnation and fished for another.

Several steps have been taken by some unscrupulous persons to sabotage the precautionary measures in place to protect Rivers people. Governor Wike is working round the clock because nobody expects any form of assistance from any quarters.
For days, Carveton Helicopters worked with some groups to make Rivers State vulnerable. In a state broadcast, Governor Wike drew their attention to this ugly trend, but they ignored it. Perhaps because the Minister of Aviation was beating the drums for them. They acted as if they are above the law.

On April 5, 2020, Governor Wike in a State Broadcast declared: "Every day, we are inundated with letters from the Federal Government to allow oil companies to fly in expatriates to drill Oil. Then we ask, what is the status of those coming from Lagos? Nobody has told us their status as regards coronavirus.
"If they come to come Rivers without us knowing their status, what will be implication assuming they have the virus."

Despite the warnings, On 7th April, 2020 Carveton Helicopters conveyed passengers into Port Harcourt and arrogantly refused to subject them to prescribed tests . That action further jeopardised the state's scheme to protect the people from coronavirus.
The pilots and the said passengers were promptly arrested. They were arraigned before courts of competent jurisdiction and they are to face trial.

They weren't arrested for flying a helicopter. They were arrested for refusing to cooperate with state health authorities by complying with regulations on the testing of anyone coming into the state for essential duties. Same way other states have arrested different persons who violate regulations at this time.
Part of the regulations signed by the Rivers State Governor, which the pilots and Carveton Helicopters contravened read: "These Regulations apply where the Governor declares, that the incidence
or transmission of Coronavirus or any other infectious disease constitutes
a serious and imminent threat to public health, and that the incidence or
transmission of Coronavirus or any infectious disease is at such a point
that the measures outlined in these Regulations may reasonably be
considered as an effective means of preventing the further, significant
transmission of Coronavirus or any infectious disease."

The Executive Order signed by Governor Wike is titled: "EXECUTIVE ORDER RVSG - 01 2020 PURSUANT TO SECTIONS 2, 4 AND 8 OF QUARANTINE ACT, CAP. Q2 LAWS OF THE FEDERATION OF
NIGERIA 2004 AND REGULATION 11 OF THE QUARANTINE (CORONA
VIRUS (COVID-19) AND OTHER INFECTIOUS DISEASES) REGULATIONS,
2020."
The Executive Order stated: "In exercise of the powers conferred on me by Sections 4 and 8 of the Quarantine Act, Cap. Q2 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004 and regulation 11 of Quarantine (Corona virus (COVID 19) and Infectious Diseases) Regulations, 2020 and all other powers enabling me in that behalf, I Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, CON,
GSSRS, Governor, Rivers State, hereby issue the following Orders:
It added: "Flight operations at the Port Harcourt International Airport Omagwa,
Airforce Base, Port Harcourt and Bonny Helipad are hereby suspended and
no person landing at these airports shall be allowed to transit into the State."
Governor Wike was the very first to sign this order. Other states including the Presidency copied from Rivers State.
The Minister of Aviation is not conversant with the seriousness of the issues involved. We are talking about public safety. Nothing could be more important than that. The lives of over 6million Rivers people are at stake with his CARELESS issuance of permits premised on the arrogance of telling Carveton Helicopters not to subject themselves to the health protocols on ground for the protection of Rivers people.
In Rivers State, everyone understands that the law must to be respected. The Governor knows the law and respects the rule of law. He will never obstruct the process, but insists that Federal Agencies respect their boundaries. After issuing landing permit, will the workers work inside the plane or helicopter? That is where the respect for the COVID-19 regulations in the state comes to play. You must subject the pilots and passengers to test. Thereafter, they proceed to carry out their essential duties. This particular area is way off the Minister of Aviation's jurisdiction.
Does the Minister of Aviation run Isolation/
Treatment Centres in Rivers State? Is there any record that the Minister of Aviation have ever taken measures to protect Rivers people from coronavirus?
Aside the deliberate plot to make Rivers State vulnerable to coronavirus, what positive contribution has the Federal Government made to protect the state?
Governor Wike said: " "It is quite unfortunate that the containment of coronavirus has been politicized by the Federal Government. While Lagos State received a grant of N10billion as a commercial hub, Rivers State as the nation’s oil and gas hub that produces a greater percentage of the nation’s wealth has not received any support from the Federal Government.
"One wonders why Federal Government should single out a state out of 36 States to give support. Does it mean that support will come when a State has a record of over 50 infected persons before it gets support. No state should be seen as more important than any other state. This is a Federal Republic. No state is superior to others."
Rivers State is not the first State to arrest violators of coronavirus regulations. Only a few days ago Lagos State arrested and convicted Nollywood Star, Funke Akindele and her husband. The Minister of Culture and Tourism did not defend her. Lagos also arrested different classes of offenders. No Federal Agency or professional organization defended the offenders.

In Abuja, the FCT COVID-19 Enforcement Team arrested 17 Turkish Professionals for violating the coronavirus regulations on Wednesday. The Minister of Foreign Affairs did not defend them.
Kaduna State Government has arrested Christian and Muslim Clerics for violating the coronavirus regulations, nobody from the Federal Government rose to the defence of the offenders.

This brings me to the threat issued by an association of pilots. Samuel Ugorji and Samuel Buhari were not arrested with 10 others because they are pilots. They committed an offence. The Rule of law will be upheld. Nobody is above the law because of his/her profession. Most importantly, the lives of Rivers people remain paramount.
Governor Wike captures this point:
"The highly insensitive and provocative actions of Calverton Helicopters took place in the midst of credible intelligence reports about plans by our enemies to traffic carriers of the dreaded Coronavirus into the State.
"Their morbid intention is to create panic by pushing up the infection rate and rubbish the robust measures we have since put in place to cut off the spread of the virus and keep our State and our citizens safe and secure from the ravaging pandemic."
An Adviser to Governor Wike, Mr Erastus Awortu captured the folly of the Minister of Aviation thus: "It does not matter to the FG if Rivers lives are wiped out by the virus so long as they can take oil to service other lands."
Once it comes to Rivers State, the Federal Government sees money. It cannot see safety of lives. It cannot see security. It cannot see projects and it cannot see the welfare of Rivers people .
The misconduct of the Minister of Aviation is unfortunate. We saw this character trait in the Former General Officer Commanding 6 Division and the Former Rivers State SARS Commander. Sirika'a outburst to me is a confirmation of the ulterior motive behind the recklessness of Carveton..
The Federal Government and her officials should retrace their steps and work with the Rivers State Government to fight the spread of coronavirus. The fight against coronavirus is not an election. There are no institutions to manipulate results. That is why the Federal Government must abandon this ugly political strategy.
I know that the Federal Government will invest huge sums in misinformation and propaganda on this issue as they have always done, but the fundamental issue remains, why the eagerness to jeopardise the safety of Rivers people by compromising the health defence network of the state?
When there were cases of insecurity in Rivers State, the APC Federal Government offered no support to the Rivers State Government. Governor Wike had to personally lead the way to pull Rivers State out of the woods.
Hadi Sirika can blatantly talk trash because he is playing politics. Otherwise, in Kaduna, the State Government has declared that any person passing through the state will be quarantined for 14days. This is irrespective of the profession of the person. Coronavirus is no respecter of professions.

On March 30, 2020, Rivers State Government announced waivers to different categories of persons in view of the directive of the State Government closing the borders.
They include: Medical and Pharmaceutical Personnel ,Food and Beverages , Essential Oil and Gas Staff, Petroleum Products and Media Workers and Newspaper Distributors. All these categories of staff must identify themselves with valid identity cards. These persons are to be subject themselves to health checks by health professionals at the surveillance posts at the entry points and their contact addresses obtained for tracing in the case of any eventuality.
Medical and Pharmaceutical Personnel ,Food and Beverages , Essential Oil and Gas Staff, Petroleum Products and Media Workers and Newspaper Distributors subject themselves to the health protocols outlined in the state governor's Executive Order at the entry points of the state.
But his Imperial Majesty, Hadi Sirika, the Almighty 'Elected' Minister of Aviation, wants to jeopardise the health of Rivers people because he issued a permit on the EXCLUSIVE LIST.
If there is any person who is ignorant, it is Chairman of EXCLUSIVE LIST. I want to reiterate. The pilots of Carveton Helicopters were arrested because they refused to respect the health regulations outlined in the Executive Order signed by Governor Wike. They Executed the tenets of Sirika'a permit by landing in Rivers State, but refused to obey the extant regulations in place to protect Rivers people.
I will still refer to Governor Wike's State Broadcast of March 30, 2020.
He said: "Let me reiterate that this government will continue to do what is right no matter who is involved. As you are all aware, no conventional war has grounded global life and economy like coronavirus has done.
"Everybody is affected. Therefore, all hands must be on deck to defeat coronavirus. I want to sincerely express my heartfelt gratitude to our health professionals on the frontline of this fight. Let me also thank all the security agencies, individuals and organisations who are collaborating with us to make Rivers State safe. "
No well meaning Nigerian should take Sirika seriously. The matter at stake is beyond the touting of LISTS. We are talking of the safety of Rivers people. Not who is on what list. Sirika serves a Government that lacks the moral ground to discuss Rivers State. By his irrational outburst, Sirika has emphasised the deadly conspiracy against Rivers people.
As usual, Rivers people are prepared to defend themselves. If they rose to defend their mandate during the 2019 elections against soldiers and the FSARS, then Sirika and those who sent him to display irresponsible ignorance should understand that Rivers people will defend themselves at this crucial moment. It is a matter of life and death.
Only yesterday, the APC Federal Government took the necessary precautionary measure of placing the visiting Chinese Doctors on quarantine for 14days. These Chinese Doctors were invited by the Federal Government, but they took action to protect the Abuja based community. But they want Rivers State Government to be careless.

HealthCoronavirus Victims Were Burned Alive In Wuhan – Report by Ctorch(op): 10:29am On Apr 08, 2020
A disturbing report from China has alleged that Coronavirus victims in Wuhan, the epicentre of the virus were burned alive in Funeral homes.

According to a report from Radio Free Asia, locals in the city say they heard screams of people being burned alive from funeral home furnaces in the city.

Several local Chinese who were treated for Coronavirus at the Hospitals also said they witnessed Coronavirus patients being put in body bags while still alive.

The reports are yet to be confirmed as the Chinese Communist Party has neither confirmed nor denied the allegations. However, during the early days of the viral outbreak, Chinese officials had advised cremation as the best way to dispose of corpses who died from Coronavirus.

According to local Chinese, it also became unofficial state policy to give priority to younger patients over older ones in other to create bed spaces in overcrowded Hospitals in Wuhan.

Reports further allege that the older Chinese were often shipped off to incinerators while conscious and alive because they were less likely to survive the viral infection.

According to a source in the Wuhan funeral industry simply identified as Ma, several infected persons were forced into body bags while they were still animated.

Some people are saying that … there are video clips of screams coming from funeral homes, from inside the furnaces … which tells us that some people were taken to the funeral homes while they were still alive.”

One old lady was saying that they put one guy into … a body bag when he wasn’t even dead yet, and took him off to the crematorium because there was no way of saving him,” he said.

This will not be the first report regarding Coronavirus victims in Wuhan, China but all of them remain unconfirmed.

People across the globe have called on China to pay other countries for damages because the virus originated from China and spread across the globe.

While China’s official death toll stands just above 4,000, reports say the real death toll stands at over 50,000 dead.

The US and other Western countries have also accused China of concealing real data and figures about the effect of the Coronavirus on its population.

A video circulated back in February where an old woman alleged that a patient next to her had been stuffed into a body bag while he was alive.

He’s not dead, his feet and hands are still moving. “[They] wrapped him in a plastic body bag and zipped it up.”

She said further in the video that the man was still moving when medical workers bound his head, hands and feet which were still animated.

She accused the hospitals of not providing actual treatment for patients except respirators.

According to her the older patients at the hospital where she was admitted were treated like dead dogs.

When reports of mass cremations began to surface in February, Chinese authorities refused to allow people pick up the remains of their loved ones until late March.

When the doors of the funeral homes finally opened, 5,000 sets of ashes were being delivered to people daily.

It is estimated that around 46,000 people have supposedly received the ashes of their loved ones although many were mislabeled and given to the wrong next of kin.

A resident found a man’s belt clasp in the urn that supposedly contained the ashes of her mother. Another resident found ceramic dental fixtures in the urn labeled with her father’s name even though he never had such fittings done while he was alive.

It was further alleged that the funeral parlours carried out so much cremations that some of their incinerators broke down due to the sheer amount of corpses.

We are not occupying Nigeria but Rescuing her towns from Boko Haram-Chad President

We Cleared Boko Haram From Nigerian Towns: Their Soldiers Refuses to Take Over . - Chadian President. - New York Times

“We want the Nigerians (troops) to come and occupy, so we can advance,” President Déby complained in an interview at his palace last week. “We’re wasting time, for the benefit of Boko Haram,” he added. “We can’t go any further in Nigeria. We’re not an army of occupation.”
According to New York Time, “a small-country president cleaning up a far bigger and richer one’s mess”.
Déby showed no hint of triumphalism. Instead, he was frustrated, impatient: His men were stuck, still awaiting any sign of Nigerian forces who could come to take over.
He does not want to be holding Nigerian territory, he said. He wants to be on the move to give Boko Haram more Blows. -
